Product Description

The EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS II USM is a lightweight and maneuverable standard zoom lens with Image Stabilizer (IS).

From the Manufacturer

EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM

For incredible versatility, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM has been redesigned to deliver superb L-series optical performance that pairs smoothly with the high-resolution, full-frame sensors of SLR cameras. Featuring a zoom range of 24–105mm and a constant f/4 aperture, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM is ideal for landscapes, portraits, sports and more, offering effective all-day performance for advanced photography and videography. It helps reduce ghosting and flare, and has improved peripheral brightness as well as a 10-blade circular aperture that helps deliver sharp, evenly illuminated images with gorgeous background blur. It even has an improved IS system for better handheld performance, especially in challenging light. From wide-angle to mid-telephoto and everywhere in-between, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM is a durable, compact performer you can count on for excellent performance and gorgeous results in more places, more often.

All-new optical design with improvements in peripheral brightness.

The EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM’s new optical composition includes 17 elements in 12 groups, including 4 glass-molded (GMo) aspherical lenses on 5 surfaces for excellent overall resolving power. These improvements help increase peripheral brightness for better edge-to-edge results with reduced distortions, delivering still photos and video of great clarity and resolution.

High-performance standard zoom lens with constant f/4L aperture and a broad angle of view covering wide-angle to mid-telephoto.

Offering coverage from 24mm wide-angle to 105mm mid-telephoto, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM is a true walk-around lens that can be used for any number of shooting scenarios. From landscapes and portraits to snapshots and videos of breaking news, and anything else that catches the photographer’s or filmmaker’s eye, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM range is highly adaptable. You can spend less time changing lenses and more time taking pictures or recording video.

Air Sphere Coating (ASC) helps to significantly reduce flare and ghosting.

The EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM features Air Sphere Coatings (ASC) on its lens elements to help combat flare, ghosting and reflections, and deliver clean images with reduced aberrations from reflected light. Designed to significantly reduce distortions, this technology puts an ultra-low refractive layer on the lens element. This layer works with the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM’s overall optical formula to help deliver a clean image to the camera’s sensor, which can decrease the need for post-production.

Image Stabilizer performance at up to 4 stops* of shake correction helps capture sharp images.

For consistently sharper results, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM features an improved Image Stabilizer system that provides significantly enhanced shake reduction for up to 4 stops* of shutter speeds. This means more reliable handheld performance and clearer detail in low-light situations or at lower ISOs. Because of its enhanced stabilization, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM can also minimize the need for a tripod.

* Based on CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) standards. Testing performed using the EOS-1D X digital SLR camera at a focal length of 105mm. The number of stops may vary based on the camera model used.

Circular aperture (10 blades) helps deliver beautiful, soft backgrounds.

Thanks to its 10-blade, circular aperture, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM is capable of gorgeous, evocative out-of-focus areas and soft backgrounds throughout its zoom range. By delivering an incredible level of control over background blur, it helps you define the mood of your image, creating impactful photos and videos.

Fluorine coating on front and rear lens surfaces helps reduce smears and fingerprints.

To help maintain a clean lens, even after multiple lens changes in sub-optimal conditions, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM has a specially designed non-stick fluorine coating on its front and rear surfaces. This fluorine coating helps prevent dust, water, oil and other surface residue like fingerprints from sticking to the lens, resulting in quick and easy wiping, without the use of solvents.

Highly resistant to dust and water intrusion, enabling shooting even in harsh conditions.

Befitting an L-series lens, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM is built to endure photography and moviemaking in even the harshest conditions. It features a dust- and water-resistant construction on the switch panel, the zoom and focus rings, and on the lens mount, helping to prevent dust and moisture from interfering with operation.

Inner focusing, ring USM, high-speed CPU and optimized AF algorithms for fast and accurate autofocusing.

The EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM is engineered to provide fast, accurate operation for efficient performance across the board. It features a high-performance control CPU that drives Canon’s quick inner focusing with ring USM for quick starts and stops. Plus, it’s programmed with optimized AF algorithms that help achieve fast, accurate focus and maintain it consistently.

Full-time manual focus allows manual focus adjustment while in AF Mode.

The EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM offers complete manual control, even when AF is engaged, with a simple twist of the lens’s focus ring. Additionally, full-time manual focus means it’s easy to achieve and maintain focus manually, which can be especially handy when shooting video or composing still images on an SLR’s screen.

    Won’t focus consistently

I bought this three years ago and thought the images were soft but never really tested until today. With a 5D Mk IV on a tripod I zoomed the lens out and made sure the range was such that there was a narrow depth-of-field so I could check front-focus or back-focus issues (which is what I expectex). Using a Spyder LensCal target I could clearly see that it just wasn’t focusing very well most of the time. In Live View, which uses an entirely different focusing technology, it yielded a sharp image almost equal to the Canon EF100 L Macro I was comparing it too. That’s a famously sharp lens, so for a zoom lens to come close is impressive. Obviously the glass is OK–but something about the through-the-lens focusing mechanism is defective. Be sure to check your lens before 3 years go by! Maybe it can be repaired under warranty. Mine’s going off to the Canon repair facility and I cringe to think what it’ll cost.

    Perfect Lens

I had he previous version of is lens for about 7 years, baptized it accidentally in a river, sadly, and this is the awesome replacement. My waling-around lens, as was the other. This is a bit sharper and focuses quicker. Canon IS lenses set the standard.

Great lens, very sharp and produces great photos

Great lens, very sharp and produces great photos. I use it with my Canon EOS 6D Mark II. Low light performance is okay, only goes down to F/4. But other than that is a great daytime travel lens. I’ve taken it to Rome, Amalfi Coast, Puerto Vallarta, Dominican Republic, very durable lens.

    Great Outdoor Lens

You lose some clarity in your photo as a trade off for the versitility of the zoom. Overall happy with lens. Great outdoor lens so you only have to carry one.

    Meh.

It’s a good portrait lens, but it’s not good for weddings & events. The focus is off and the camera shake is pretty bad. Wish I had realized this before my return window closed. I thought I was the problem, but it’s not me or my 5D Mark IV.

Love this Lense. Not good for low light situations but can be worked around with a higher I SO. It is a bit heavy but worth it. It is a lot more expensive to get a 2.8 zoom.

Like many, I had hoped that Canon would make …

Like many, I had hoped that Canon would make a replacement version for the original 24-105 for some time. Having owned and used that lens for years on lower resolution cameras, I found it to be a good general purpose event lens and really appreciated the focal range. It was not as sharp as my 24-70 2.8 II, but I really liked have the extra reach at the long end and the IS.The new lens (this item) arrived last week and I’ve been out photographing with it on my 5D MkIV and wanted to test the IS capability and overall sharpness as I will use it, mostly handheld. I was anticipating it to be a bit sharper, edge illumination to be better, and the IS to be more effective, and I’m very happy to report that on all counts I am very pleased with this new lens. I find it a worthwhile improvement on all counts, and a bonus that the lens zooms in and out smoothly for better video compared to V1. Overall it is what I was hoping for and I am very pleased and glad it finally arrived. (I understand that the earthquakes in Japan many months ago set back production of some products, causing the delay.) For the money I think it’s a great value and a overall a great lens.

    Nice lens on my 6D

It’s a nice upgrade from what I had, it would have been nice if it was shipped in a box and not a plastic shipping envelope. The canon box is all destroyed but the lens seems to be fine. Pretty poor on the shipper packaging a piece of optics like this at this price point

    Happy with Version 2

This lens is criticized on photography boards because people feel the current version 1 is a better value at current lower prices and because they don’t feel it is as sharp as 24-70 2.8 Ii (to be expected). When version 1 of this lens got bundled as a kit with 6D it went from being considered a high quality lens to being maligned as a “kit” lens. It is difficult for the 24-105 to get respect!I used version 1 of the 24-105 for over 10 years and upgraded to version 2 because it is my main travel lens along with my 70-200 f4. So far I am very pleased with the clear sharp images, build quality, handling, and IS. It is bigger but not noticeably heavier than version 1 and balances well on the 6D with or without grip.Am happy with upgrade.Difficult part was finding it in stock on Amazon.

phototronics – place to go for renewed camera equipment

Lens from phototronics got here quickly, and the lens did everything it was supposed to do. Just wasn’t the lens I needed… so decided to return it (great return policy) ordered another lens from them, the one I really should have ordered before and they were great on the return and the new one arrived right away and works great. Highly recommended.

Three things different than I expected – mostly good.

I read the technical reviews and knew what to expect in terms of sharpness and features. I’ll just report on three things that were slightly different than I expected.1. The lock button only locks the zoom in the retracted position. It does not lock the zoom in any arbitrary position. One of my biggest frustrations with version I of the 24-105mm, besides the lens hood, was that the zoom would creep when pointing down at a subject. Canon tightened my old lens up for me, but it still wasn’t quite as tight as I’d like. I was hoping for a feature like the zoom lock on the Canon 100-400mm f/4-5.6, but with a switch instead of a ring. On the plus side, the zoom on version II is nice and stiff, yet still easy to rotate, so hopefully it won’t creep with use. It feels nice – firm and smooth.2. While I know the lens is slightly heavier, it sure doesn’t feel like it. Feels similar to the old model.3. Nice surprise: The lens hood. The lens hood on version I of the 24-105mm was a mess to attach and remove, like several of Canon’s other older lenses. The new lens hood glides on effortlessly and snaps cleanly into place. It is a huge improvement. There is a little button on the hood you press to release the lens hood for unscrewing, similar to the lens hood on the 100-400mm f/4-5.6 II. The new lens hood has a cheaper interior – it’s a matte finish plastic instead of the darker light-absorbing felt of the version I lens hood. The darker felt on version I not only had better light absorption, but also attracted dust which was actually a good feature – it kept dust off the lens. I slightly prefer the old inner lens hood treatment, but I’ll bet in practice nobody will be able to tell the difference between the two.Other comments:I’ve played with the image stabilization, and it seems steadier than the old model.

    A little soft at 105mm.

Not as sharp as my Canon EF 24-70L 2.8. Bought to use with M6 instead of full frame and EF 70-200L 2.8 to save on weight. Not as sharp as that either. Will probably sell the 24-105. Images with M6 and 24-105 are acceptable if you don’t zoom in to the max.

    Jack of All Trades

I just switched from APSC to full frame and I only had a 50 f1.8. I needed one lens that could do it all, photos and videos so I got this. This lens is decent but nothing amazing. Constant f4 and IS is good for video work. And the range covers from wide to tele. However, the corners are a little soft. If you take photos only or you use a stabilizer for video, buy the 24-70 f2.8 instead.

I had not read the description accurately for this lens and ended up feeling wrong because I was not given the hood and new lens cap. I will tell you this, the lens arrived in great condition. Worked great. This is kind of a thank you review for being very receptive and nice about their transaction.

    Great starter lense

Would definitely recommend this for a great starting videographer. Only thing to note is that the F-stop number is pretty high. If you plan on doing any low-light photography or video (like a concert or at night) I would recommend looking for a 1.2 or 1.4 rather than this 4.0.I typically use this lense with a Canon 1DX Mark II or Canon C300 for interview style videos, so it’s always super well lit.

This is a great lens! Perhaps it is an overkill on my Canon 7D but the quality of build, stability of IS and precision of zoom is outstanding! I am yet to compare the sharpness of this lens compared to my Canon 50mm 1.4 but the first results are promising. I also particularly like the zoom lock feature and the fact that aperture stays fixed (e.g. 4f) no matter how I zoom, compared to the kit lens.Depending on the use, the downside can be its size and weight. It matches well with the clunkiness of my 7D.

    Absolutely Fantastic

I had been shopping around for a great, quality all-round lens for a while until found this one and I could not be happier. Sure to beginner photographers, this is really pricey but believe me when I say that you will not want to go back to basic lenses ever again. This is my “Carry-around and go-to” lens for everything that doesn’t call for a specific lens

dissapointed, but maybe was the unit i received

lens quality is superb…that is undeniable. but my unit was really noisy during video, that makes it unusable for what i wanted..i found the 18 -135mm usm being really quite…..and that lens is only $300. as i said maybe my unit has a problem.

Perfect all around lens if the 24-105 range works for you

This is my first L lens and I’m using it on a cropped sensor (APC-S) with my 70d. I know this is marketed as a full frame lens but I personally know many people that use this lens with APC-S sensors and I believe that even with the crop factor this lens is still attractive, especially for me because I typically shoot nature and landscape (check out gil1908.smugmug.com). Would be great to get 18mm on the wide side but I can live with 24, and I wonder if there’s a reason why Canon selected the 24 as a starting point for some lenses. Also, I am planning to upgrade to full frame sometime soon so getting ready for the upgrade with this lens. The lens itself is pretty big and heavy. It’s the biggest one I had so far but still at a level you can carry around all day so no big deal here. I am coming from a Sigma 18-250 that is fairly compact. In many cases, I’ve seen people don’t take Sigma seriously, and this is just wrong perception. Sigma makes excellent lenses that produce very good photo quality. However at some point you get to a point where you can start seeing where the lens falls short, and this is when you need to move on. So I feel that with this lens now I have moved on.I only took a few photos so far but as far as I can tell comparing to many other lenses I had over the years this lens delivers on auto focus speed, quietness, and of course picture quality. You get a f/4 all the way and a good IS.It also does a pretty good job in the “macro” area although it’s not even close to my Cannon 100mm macro lens. If you’re serious about macro shooting, get a dedicated, fixed (prime), macro lens. But I’m derailing here…I will surely miss the 250mm I got from my Sigma lens but the 24-105L does seem like an extremely good all around lens and should also add good portrait capability that I don’t think I had with the Sigma. It does seem like a very good solution for a one-lens-that-does-it-all. Not a huge zoom range which is the thing that bothers me the most but it covers for it with higher picture quality, build quality and performance.Currently, this lens sells for around $1000 which is not easy to swallow for non-professional photographers like me. I can’t just write if off my taxes… But I see it as a long term investment that will take me to the next level and prepare me for the full frame phase of my photography life so I believe that overall this is going to be a very good investment.the lens comes with a hood and both caps and a case. I like the hood and that’s a $30 save right there. I do think however that for outdoors photography a polarizing filter is a must. I take all my photos using a polarizing filter. It provides better results and also protects the lens — win win for me.I did not get any extended warranty, and I hope I haven’t made a mistake. I figured that none of my lenses I have been using for more than 5-6 years now have never cracked, crashed, broke or scratched so even though this one is more expensive, I hope I can take a good care of it.

    Still Canon’s Best Versatile Zoom!

Still Canon’s best versatile zoom! Despite the less-than-glowing official reviews, this new 24-105 is a worthy purchase. I’ve owned the Mark I version three times, the 24-70 f/2.8 II, and the 24-70 f/4. My major disappointment with the f/2.8 II was lack of IS. Halloween and Christmas pics were next to impossible to get without toting a tripod around. The f/4 was very nice since it had IS, but I still missed that 105mm!I just recently purchased the Tamron 24-70 G2, which is a fantastic lens (f/2.8 and Vibration Compensation), but guess what…I missed that 105mm! So, decided to buy this lens, and after a little bit of AFMA, the lens is superb! Quick focusing, sharp images (much improved in corners), and lets in more light than the previous version. No, it doesn’t have 2.8, but the IS is better than the first version, so that helps tremendously with slow moving subjects. You can shoot everything from wide landscapes to head and should portraits with nice bokeh. Yes, you lose some quality when compared to the 24-70s, but that is pure physics. This is the best compromise between image quality and focal range in my experience.I uploaded some pics I took today. These were not processed in post, just shot in Landscape picture style, and converted to jpeg in Canon’s DPP.

Amazing with canon m50 + viltrox speedbooster

I use this lens with my canon m50, with viltrox speedbooster and it is amazing. I use this for stills and not much video. There is no Vignetteing, because it is meant for full frame and not cross sensor. Which was my only scare when I bought the lens. Over all this lens is amazing with the canon m50 + viltrox speedbooster

Some improvement over the first version

I love it just as much as my version 1…and a little more. My old 24-105 was my “do it all” lens and stayed on my camera 80% of the time. This new version appears to be a little sharper and the IS is nearly silent. The IS on my old lens was pretty loud, certainly not usable when shooting video (but I never did much anyway). It’s nice to know I can do some without worrying about that sound being picked up by the mic.I do notice the increase in weight, but that’s to be expected with this type of lens and focal length. There’s not really anything to complain about here!

Chromatic aberration. You het better results from a Holga.

This is the lens that will make me leave Canon after 30 years. The worst CA I’ve ever seen in my life. I picked it up (new) while my 85 was in the shop being cleaned. It almost cost me a client as it missed 70% of shots on a portrait shoot of a mildly active 7 year old. It’s junk. Total junk. I will be returning it and taking a good long look at other systems. I am so tired of over priced Canon junk I could scream. Slow focus, missed focus, etc. enough is enough. I sent it in and Canon says nothing wrong…it’s just an f4. You gotta be kidding me!!!

    High Quality Lens

This was a gift to my daughter (along with a great camera) for graduating very high in her High School. One of the hobbies she picked up was photography was a “dream camera” that she got to use as Chief Editor of her school’s yearbook. She dreaded having to give it back. She developed some real skills and more importantly to me just something she loved to do with photography and she can enjoy it for a lifetime. She uses it on a regular basis so it was an excellent purchase and gift.I’ve got some basic photography skills but she has gone way beyond my knowledge and skills on her own. Almost makes me want to stop taking pictures because I new if she took them they would end up so much better!
