Features:

4K UHD 30p Recording

4K Compatible 20x Optical Zoom

Advanced Full HD

4K UHD 30p Recording

The combination of a large-format, high-sensitivity CMOS Sensor and Canon’s DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor with Over Sampling HD Processing enables 4K UHD recording with outstanding image quality.

The DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor instantly analyzes a scene, taking into account dozens of image parameters to provide fully optimized results, capturing every detail while reducing image noise, even in low light.

An advanced automatic white-balance system analyzes different areas of an image and makes adjustments where they are necessary to capture beautiful, natural scenes with true-to-life color.

Genuine Canon 4K-compatible 20x Optical Zoom Lens and Wide 29.3mm Angle of View1

The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder features a Genuine Canon 4K-compatible 20x Optical Zoom lens. It offers a 35mm equivalent of 29.3–601mm, with a minimum object distance of just 23.6 inches (600mm)1 and 0.4 inches (10mm) at wide end. Incorporating advanced elements and coatings, it helps reduce flare, ghosting and other distracting effects to deliver sharp, clear images with minimal distortion.

Advanced Full HD

The VIXIA HF G50 represents Canon’s Full HD System, delivering truly excellent image quality and reproduction for most any application. Its Over Sampling HD Processing utilizes the image data delivered by the powerful 4K UHD CMOS Sensor to enable Full HD recording that is nothing short of stunning.

Features:

Intelligent 5-axis Image Stabilization

DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor

8-bladed Circular Aperture

Intelligent 5-axis Image Stabilization

Canon’s SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer helps correct camera shake quickly, so even handheld video taken at long focal lengths can be sharp and steady. The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder’s DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor enables its versatile Dynamic Image Stabilization mode. Providing continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broad range of motion, with extra compensation applied at wide-angle focal lengths, the Dynamic Image Stabilization system stabilizes rotational camera shake. Controlling rotational camera shake helps ensure smooth, virtually distortion-free video, even when you’re walking while shooting.

DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor

The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder incorporates Canon’s DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor, which is integral to providing high image quality, advanced performance and convenient operability. This advanced core technology component provides the image-processing power and speed that enables features such as 4K UHD video acquisition, image stabilization and slow and fast motion recording. It also captures high amounts of light for brighter, virtually noise-free images even in dark scenes.

8-bladed Circular Aperture

The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder features an 8-bladed Circular Aperture, which helps reduce the “starburst” effect found in camcorders with non-circular apertures. The result is that points of light in out-of-focus areas, usually the background of your shot, are circularly blurred, creating beautiful images with an authentic and artistic feel. The professional touch of a manual focus ring allows accurate and precise control. For extra flexibility, the manual focus ring can be easily set to control zoom instead.

Features:

3.0-inch LCD Capacitive Touchscreen

Tiltable Electronic Viewfinder

Five Assignable Buttons, Joystick, Lens Ring and Custom Dial for Creative Control

Slow and Fast Motion, including Interval Recording for Both 4K and Full HD

3.0-inch LCD Capacitive Touchscreen

The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder features a bright, 3.0-inch capacitive LCD touchscreen that’s clearly visible with rich, natural color reproduction wherever you go. Its streamlined user interface makes choosing focal points, tracking moving subjects, and shooting and watching your videos easy and fun. Clear explanations pop up when selecting shooting modes and recording formats, so videographers can feel the confidence to create impressive videos.

Tiltable Electronic Viewfinder

The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder features a 0.24-inch, approximately 1.56 million-dot color electronic viewfinder with approximately 100% field of view coverage for detailed, accurate composition judgment. The viewfinder can be tilted up to 45° from its normal resting position to enable a great amount of shooting freedom. Settings can be adjusted with the handy joystick, so you won’t have to stop looking through the viewfinder. Because it is positioned where the thumb naturally rests, you can shoot and adjust easily–even with one hand.

Five Assignable Buttons, Joystick, Lens Ring and Custom Dial for Creative Control

The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder’s many control features help make professional customization and functionality easy. Equipped with five assignable buttons for quick-access and custom shooting, the camcorder can be tailored to your specific needs. The joystick enables control of camera settings on the viewscreen without having to use touch panel controls. The manual focus/zoom lens ring allows you to make precise focus and zoom adjustments. A Custom Key and Dial feature allows you to assign functions to an easily accessible key and adjust the settings with a control dial.

Slow and Fast Motion, including Interval Recording for Both 4K and Full HD

Slow and Fast Motion Modes allow the VIXIA HF G50 camcorder to record a different frame rate than the playback frame rate for a fast or slow-motion effect during playback. Since the camcorder is recording real frames and modifying the playback rate, there is virtually no quality loss and maximum image quality is maintained. Additionally, interval recording allows you to record frames at specified intervals, providing time-lapse recording of up to 1200x and slow-motion down to 0.4x of the original speed.

Features:

MP4 Recording

HD Recording

Dual SD Card Slots

MP4 “FHD (1920×1080)” 60p (35 Mbps) Recording

With the VIXIA HF G50 camcorder, you can record in MP4 format in 60p at up to 35 Mbps. 1080/60p recording captures twice the amount of information as 60i, and with images captured at a rate of up to 60 frames per second, diagonal noise is virtually eliminated so even fast-moving subjects show up crisply with motion and patterns clearly recorded. This greater sense of detail and faithful rendering of moving edges, plus enhanced color and fine tonal gradation, gives your video everything Full HD has to offer.

HD (1280×720) Recording (8 Mbps)

The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder supports 1280×720 HD resolution recording at 8 Mbps. Reaching approximately 7.62 megapixels, it’s ideal for film projects, weddings and more shoots that require high quality video production.

Dual SD Card Slots

The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder allows you to record video directly to widely available SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards with capacities ranging from over 32GB to 2TB. They are available in ultra-fast reading and writing speeds and make it easy to share video.

[Disclaimers]

1 With 4K UHD, the focal length is approximately 30.6–612mm with Dynamic IS On and approximately 29.3–601mm with Standard IS / IS Off.

SD Card write-error out of box

Upon unboxing this and powering it up for a test recording, I received an error stating that the SD card was write-protected. I attempted another SD Card with the same issue. It definitely was not an issue with either SD card. This only happened when recording to slot A. When I set the camera to record to slot B, the camera recorded to the SD inserted into slot B. The crispness and image quality appeared great through the screen, but the camera arrived with a defective A-slot.

    Stabilization is absent

Where is advertised stabilization? It doesn’t exist. My GoPro 8 is much better! As per optical zoom, its strong, but you have to use a tripod or mechanical gumball.Night video are ok. Weight is big, too heavy for 9 y.o. kids operators.Going to return within 30 days period..

    Badly needs a software update

They really need to update the software. You can start a time lapse on an iphone for instance in less than 3 seconds – on this you’ve got to go into the menu and set up the configuration to do it – there is no one button set up time lapse – you’d really have to ask if they know what people are doing on their cameras. There is everything you’d expect – great picture quality etc – but if you want to take great quality video using intuitive software go with a smart phone.

    Disappointed

I am very disappointed with this camera. I have been waiting years for a consumer level camera that does 4K@60fps. After spending a week shooting and editing, I find that the image quality is just not there. As another reviewer pointed out, it is very soft and lacks the sharpness of other 4K cameras. Compared footage from my Sony AX100 which I owned for 3 years, the difference is night and day. Sony is sharp as a tack. The low light performance is terrible. Image is fuzzy and grainy. Sorry, I tried really hard to like it.i have included raw screen captures from playback. It helps to illustrate my issues.

    BUYER BEWARE!

The camera shipped to me was clearly reboxed and previously used. This is NOT a new camera that I paid for…even the original box was beat up not to mention the camera and cords inside was very poorly wrapped. There are even marks on the actual camera and NO BATTERY. THIS IS BEYOND WRONG at this price point.

    Great Camera

I bought his camera to prevent me using my college’s canon $2k and $4k cameras. I filmed in documentary in NY and the end results was great. The quality of the video as good as those professional cameras. I had to buy my own microphone as this camera doesn’t have a XLR connection. If you need top sound, might be best to buy the Vixia G70. I still use it to film outside, landscapes, sports, and the camera does amazing.

    fantastic video recorder

My first high quality camcorder. Beautiful stable movies. indoor low light capability is amazing. Bokeh is perfect in blurred backgrounds at f2.8. Clean hdmi output is perfect with no status stuff from camera. stabilization is very good. Much larger and heavier that the consumer level cameras but still hand-holdable although i purchased a fluid ball head for my good macro tripod. most welcome is a very decent wide angle capability. i could care less about high power zoom. but being able to record entire family in a room is awesome with no special lens attachments. This thing can really do closeups too. fun to experiment with. Wish it had a stop action intervalometer but the slow and fast motion is very good. so far no complaints even though its pretty expensive.

    Very Nice Camcorder

I have purchased several DSLR cameras for travel, but have always been disappointed with them. If you’re at a large museum, a historical sight, mountain top, etc., a camera doesn’t cut it, you need a camcorder. After a few practice shots at a local park, I think this is what I needed. I was very impressed with the resolution of the video. Setting it up to work like you want doesn’t take long. Learning how to use gain instead of iso might take another couple of days, but this camera makes the effort worth my time. The cost is about half of what a 5D Mark IV was three years ago, so the price is good too.

Very Nice Camcorder for the Price

Excellent well built device!! Great 4k Video and plenty of manual features to play with if you set to Manual Mode. Overall I am very impressed by the G50. I tested the low light performance and it was much better than I expected. Since I film in my living room under studio lights with shadows I want to get the best low light performance I can reasonably afford so I decided to go for the G60 instead with the slightly larger sensor. If I was filming mostly in the day I would keep the G50. It’s really a nice, affordable camcorder. I highly recommend it!

Awesome camcorder but the stabilization needs work

I sold my 2013 Sony Camcorder to buy this one and I’m VERY glad I did. The image quality is amazing. It’s lightweight, easy to operate, the stabilization is very good, and on and on. I also bought the DM-100 mic and an extra battery and now I’m all set for the next vacation.UPDATED: 5/30/2019I took the camcorder on a recent 4 night cruise to Cuba. I noticed two problems.1. (Minor)You have to *really* push the record button to make sure you’re actually recording.I found a few occasions where I had the screen closed and hit the button thinking I was recording and then I’d check it a few minutes later and it didn’t actually record because I hadn’t pushed the button hard enough.2. (Major)In a practical setting such as walking around the ship while recording and aiming the camera at various scenes while walking around, I discovered later that it doesn’t really have built in stabilization. If you want rock solid footage, you’ll need to treat it like a regular DSLR camera that’s recording video; hold it firmly with both hands and keep the movements to minimum with slow and steady motion. The ironic thing was I recorded footage on the GoPro 7 with the hypersmooth on in the same manner while walking around the ship and the difference was staggering. Canon should figure out how to incorporate that type of stabilization into the camcorder; maybe license something from GoPro.

Good optical zoom, gets the job done

I needed a secondary camera for my church’s live streaming. Last year – I purchased the Vixia HF G21. That has since been discontinued, so this was the most comparable to that, just 4K instead of 1080P.I have both cameras side by side in the back of the sanctuary. One is a wide shot for worship and this one, the G50, is a tight shot for the teaching/sermon time. This has enabled us to improve our live streams by making it feel more like they are in the room with us to have a close up.The only downfall, and I think this is more with any camera in the setup I have, I had to set it to manual focus because if there was any lighting change, it would throw a fit on the auto focus, but its a good 50+ feet away from where I have it zoomed into, so there is a lot of room for change, but I set the manual focus and have no issues with it.

    Excellent camera

This is a nice camera. Good audio and picture quality. One of the things I like best about it is the high quality video it creates at full zoom…which is something I’ve found that other brands such as Sony lacks. Touch screen is easy to use. Strongly recommend

    Camera Is Not as Shown

So….I have bought two of the Canon HF G60, and returned one and strongly considered returning the second one. The issue is that this camera, despite the picture, does not have infrared/night vision. It is super odd because every picture shows that when you flip out the LCD screen there is an infrared/night vision … let me tell you friends… it is not there. This is very disappointing because – believe it or not – it is one of the reasons I decided to buy the Canon HF G60.After I got past the mission infrared/night vision issue – I am mostly happy with the camera. The larger sensor provides a level of higher picture quality (color and sharpness) over the 1/2.3 in previous models. The IQ is pretty noticeable though, enough so that I decided to keep one of the cameras.Notes — PQ/IQ is solid – it isn’t to the level of the MFT cameras (like the GH5), but it is a noticeable step up from other Canon handhelds- Again the infrared/night vision is missing… this annoys me since I have waited over a month to post this review (after notifying the seller that the description is wrong) and it still shows the infrared/night vision toggle.- Dual memory slots that are top-loading. They seem to be a bit small…. it is a very tight fit to get my Sony Tough cards into the slots.- To record in 4k at 150mbs you will need a true 299mbs write-card. I tried using a Sony Tough 150mbs write-card and I ended up getting speed errors. Sooooo…. you are going to want to have extra cash set aside to buy the 299mbs write cards. Be warned… they are expensive- I won’t go into too much detail, but the controls are a bit cumbersome. I have never been a huge fan of Canon’s menu screens. I wish they would give you a directional pad.- At top quality, the video files are very large, but you probably knew that!- Microphone… I need to do some more experimenting, but the native mic picked up a ton of wind noise. I thought I had the filter on… but maybe I did something incorrectly. If you are going to use an external mc it will need to be passive (someone please leave me a comment if this is incorrect!). The Canon HF G60 does not have an XLR mic input. Overall, the native mic worked ok… pretty typical.- ergonomics…. not bad for a handheld. It is also relatively light… no issues- LCD screen – nice and bright!- Stabilization… others have complained, but I think it does a surprisingly good job for stability. It is not like having it on a DJI gimbal, but it does seem to be pretty dynamic.- adjustments to be made… I did not like the pre-set color that is in the default settings. It was unsaturated and not very pleasing. I went with the vivid setting (which was surprisingly hard to find) which shot up the saturation and made the footage look, and honestly, more realistic.- Pro or consumer level camera? This one is kind of a tweener. The general consumer may not be able to set the camera up in order to take advantage of its advantages (I mean if you record at 35mbs instead of 150mbs you have lost a lot of the advantage). Pros, on the other hand, may not enjoy the menu set-up and the overall lack of customization.I am sure there is a lot more to go over, but I think I hit most of the stuff that I noticed rather quickly.Final verdict… I am going to give the camera 3 stars. I am knocking off one full star for the missing infrared/night vision and another because of the 1)menu set-up 2) memory card slots tightness 3) generally being good at a lot of things but necessarily great in any. I would recommend it to anyone who does not need the night vision feature.

    Had to Return the Camera

I don’t want to completely dis this camera as it does some things very well. My main issues were two. The first could be addressed with a simple replacement. The delete function did not work properly. When you chose just one file to delete the camera deleted every file on the SD card! Terrifying. And no software solution for that. But I didn’t ask for a replacement because the stabilization is not adequate at all. When you walk with the camera in 4K it jogs left and right greatly. With 1080 it does that slightly less but still way too much. And at full telephoto it does not hold still. Another issue is start-up time. Most cameras turn on quickly when you open the display. Not this one. You have to open, slide a switch and wait maybe five seconds. You can easily miss the moment. And why? So easy to design an instant turn on. All other aspects of the camera are excellent although it is a bit unwieldly. The low light performance is stunning with the 1″ sensor. So, in the end, close but no cigar. (my old Sony 760V is far more stabile but it shows artifacts at full zoom that I want to improve on.)

Not as bad as some say.

I picked this up as an upgrade to my HF G30, as I wanted to dip my toes in the 4K pool. I considered the Sony AX700, as I’ve had Sony camcorders in the past, but I valued 4K60 more than S-Log. Also, I was more familiar with the Canon menu system. Also, the Canon mic I had already purchased for the G30 works on the GX10.Anyway, I haven’t yet shot a lot of footage, but so far, so good. I played with the camera in a low-light situation. It was noisy, but I was pushing it to +38 dB. The daytime footage I shot looks nice. The battery lasted my entire day, although I wasn’t continuously filming.I had to upgrade the processor and graphics card in my editing PC (HP Z420) before I could work with the video files. (4K 60 @ 150 Mbps). The Wi-Fi remote has more features than the one on my G30. I like the improvements Canon has made. I’ve shot a little in Wide DR, I think for my purposes I won’t miss C-log, but I wish Canon had thrown that in. (As well as 10-bit 4:2:2. It’ll do 8-bit 4:2:2 externally.)I’m enjoying the built-in ND filters.I’ll probably post an update to this review later on when I have more time with the unit. So far, so good.

Good solid camera can record for more than 24 hours at 1080p with redundant copy recording

I owned one of these and bought a second to shoot a Guinness world record 24 hour chin-up attempt from two angles. With two 256MB memory cards this camera can not only record 17mbps 1080p continuously for more than 24 hours, but it can also make a simultaneous redundant copy on the second memory card. This was crucial in filming a 24 hour Guinness attempt where any recording glitch could have been catastrophic. Both cameras performed flawlessly and am very happy with them.

Great Camera but disappointed that there is no remote!

The picture quality of this camera is TERIFFIC! Canon is consistently great with that feature. However, this camera doesn’t have a remote which was disappointing! We still are using it because it is a stationary camera for our church worship services. If it was for other uses, we’d have to return it.

    Well…I didn’t get what I thought I was getting

Definitely not what I thought I was getting. I thought I was getting a boxed product with the original information. A little usage is fine, but this thing has huge scratches and fingerprints on the lens and the little SD card slot looks disgusting outside and inside. The photo with the inside of the card reader is showing what I mean. There’s….”something” in here that looks nasty. The camcorder didn’t even come with the original battery charger, instead I got some third party battery charger and battery wrapped in plastic and it’s supposed to come with two batteries as it says on the page. And before someone says, “You really expected a new camera?” Yes, as the pictures show is what I expected. Nowhere did is say it was used and wouldn’t come in the original packaging. I will definitely be contacting amazon on this one. This is the 5th item I’ve gotten in the past month that has not been what was advertised. It was supposed to come with a remote as well and no it did not. After turning it on, The fan is not even working! Man I’m peeved at this thing! Whoever the seller is is getting reported immediately.

Great for filming youth, high school and college sports

I have two and love them both. Great to use for college sports and the SD card makes it easy to transfer or upload. If I could get an improvement it would be to slow the zoom function down, zooms in and out a little faster than I would like

    Awesome camera

I’ve been in photography for over forty years and I recently started working with video. Photography cameras can make some good videos but to me this is another level especially for live events like musical venues. My only complaint is not having invested in this camera earlier.

The camera that I was looking for

The most important things for me was that it worked well, has 4K recording and most important for me was to be able to record giving continuous power while plugged in. The other camera was disappointing because it could only record using the battery and for me that’s a problem. Now I’m unlimited with the recording options and this camera has great features too! It packs a punch, I tell my friends it’s not a toy.

Great camcorder except no night vision????!!!!

The only reason I bought this as it was listed as having night mode. I figured that meant it could record IR. Nope, no IR capabilities. Very disappointing. I ended up buying different cameras for my IR needs. Frustrating cause I only wanted one camera.

    Great camera for the money

Brilliant camera. Amazing for green screens. Auto focus is awesome. Doesn’t easily transfer to the pc. The 4k will easily wreck an old video card. My advice, if you want to use this camera to go prosumer, definilty update your PC.

    Great for live-streaming

Purchased this camera as an upgrade to our church livestream. When COVID hit, all we had was an old Cannon HD camcorder that was about 10 years old. I was pleasantly surprised by how much better this does with the limited light we have. Instant major upgrade in picture quality. Very happy we bought this camera.

    Good while it lasted.

Bought this back in July 2020. By Feb. 2022 it was starting to give us problems. The screen would go distorted and dark. I would point the camera to a bright source – such as a window to the outside or to lights and the screen would show a “blue screen” effect. Sent the camera to get it repaired – it was out of warranty. Initially, they told us $283. Ouch! OK, shame on us for not getting a CarePAK – we should have done that! A few days later they refunded our $283 and told us ~$1550 to get it repaired (basically purchase it again). I’m sorry, but this is not a good strategy on Canon’s part. Charge us $400 or $500 dollars and replace it. Otherwise, people need to be aware that if you buy this model it cannot be relyed on to last more then 2 years without breaking down and not being repairable. Makes me very hesitant to buy Canon products again.

This thing appears to be a stripped down version of the HF G40. If I had known that it did not have wifi I would not have purchased it. I need wireless remote control which this does not have so, I will return it. It is what it is! Too bad!

    Poor video quality, poor build

I will preface this by saying I am a Canon guy. I have a lot of money invested in Canon bodies and lenses, so it was natural for me to go Canon when I wanted to upgrade to a high end 4K camcorder. That being said, I found this camera to be incredibly disappointing. The build quality is poor, but more importantly the sensor is sub-par. Video quality was dull and lifeless, and performed considerably worse than a Sony camcorder that is 2 years old and cost 1/3 the price. And use the camera in anything but the best of light and the results are even worse. Grainy and poor focus. Everything about this camera is a disappointment, save for the professional features, but what good are those when the video quality is so poor. I should also add that I had to return the first camera because the A card slot didn’t work, and with the replacement I received the AWB feature doesn’t work, so even without my enormous disappointment in the video quality I still am returning it because of the build quality and poor QA.

    4K Doesn’t Work

This camera is loaded with features and is generally pretty easy to use. However, I can not get it to record in 4K. The video is always choppy, stutters, stops and starts, while the audio track continues seamlessly. I am using the recommended SD cards (SanDisk Extreme Pro 128 GB – 170 MB/s). No matter what frame rate, mode, auto/manual, stabilization on/off, etc. the 4K will not produce a good video. 1920×1280 and below work fine, and the picture captured is beautiful, but I didn’t buy this camera to be able to only do that resolution, I wanted it for the 4K capability. Going to send this one back and see if it is just the unit I got, or if it happens with another unit. I will update the post after exchanging the camera.

    Wonderful Camera

The name says it all! This is a real gem to work with. I use it on full auto to produce online content. It is compatible with after market remote controls and external microphones which make one-man productions easy! It is a bit larger than the competitors but the 4K resolution and the mp4 codec makes up for any minor inconvenience.

    Worth the Money

We first tried a cheaper camera about 15% of the price. While it kind of worked, it would break up the videos into 30 minute sizes which made more work to compile and distribute. This Camera doesn’t do that. The image looks great, needing almost no processing. A little trim at the ends potentially depending on how started and stopped. We use a tripod and a patch cord for the audio in to reduce noise of our chapel and get primarily the speakers during the service.

Different menu access than Canon Vixia HF-G30

Picture quality surpasses HF-G30 at 8MBps. Biggest difference is using the menu button and joystick to initialize the SD card. NO wi-fi to transfer/share video, but, I understand that method is very slow. Probably why Canon omitted that feature on the G-50……… Overall very happy with unit. Adorama two day delivery was excellent.

    Glad I went for G60

I am still learning all the settings and have not gone manual yet, but the video quality is outstanding and the camera is generally easy to use. I did a project with external mic and boom, and sound quality was great. I like the dual slots – use one for video and one for photos. Very happy with it – worth it to go up from G50 for the larger sensor if you can afford it.

    What happened to quality control?

I read these other reviews here and they left me with a bit of apprehension. I decided to try the camera and see for myself. I wanted a 4K 60p camera for airshows, specifically for civilian aerobatics. I have a Sony PJ790v which has a great stability system but is a 1080 60p camera. This Canon is rather heavy and bulky and the stability system in my mind is nowhere near as good as the Sonys’. I still decided to give it a try. I should have paid attention to my apprehension. Like one of the other reviewers here, my cameras’ AWB does not work! In addition, the touchscreen randomly freezes and becomes totally unresponsive! Turning the camera off was the only way to get the screen responsive again, and one time even that did not work! (Had to switch to “media”, and then back to “camera”). The ergonomics are a bit clumsy as well. I can’t make any judgement on the sharpness or color qualities, but the quality control on a $2500 camera is abysmal. I too, tried to like this camera, but it’s going back. Had to give it one star more than it deserves. News Flash! — June 13th 2018 — Canon just sent out a “workaround” for the AWB problem. I may have to repurchase this camera to see if the problem has indeed been resolved. I’m still worried a bit over the touch screen freezing, though.
