    Day 1: I’m Extremely Impressed

I received this projector today, and set it up this morning. I’ve been using it for a few hours so I don’t have much time with this. Later I will update the review if something changes. This is the updated version of the Optoma HD142x. It’s got basically the same specs except the lamp for the HD143x supposedly lasts longer. That’s the only information I could find that was different. So first off, I have only had experience with cheap projectors with weird, just different enough names to not infringe on trademarks. So if you are coming from a sub 200 dollar projector to this, your jaw will hit the floor when you see the differences. The picture quality is fantastic. I have just a little under 100 inches of screen, at about 9.5 feet throw distance. If you have a small room, this isn’t a short throw projector, so you may not get the screen size you’d like.Tried some HD movies llke Blade Runner 2049 and Ghost in the Shell, and I was really impressed. You aren’t going to get the blacks that you get on a plasma or OLED screen, but the colors were really vivid. Even with ambient light and lights turned on, the screen was still bright enough to watch without issue. The blacks turn into browns, but it is definitely watchable. I didn’t notice any rainbow effect, either, which I guess is sometimes an issues with DLP projectors.I then hooked up my PS4 and tried out Horizon Zero Dawn, easily the best looking game on the system. The HD143x has a game mode in the menu settings that brightens the screen and does some things to fake an increase in FPS. This is noticeable. I could see the slight slowdown that usually occurs with lower FPS immediately, but I don’t think it would be enough to hamper my playtime or my enjoyment. But if you are a pc gamer playing on a 120Hz screen and move to this, maybe not, I don’t know if I’ll be doing it.This projector doesn’t have a lens shift, but it does have an electric keystroke, which is so much nicer than those analog keystroke levers you get on cheap projectors. It also has a 3 screw mount setup. Most of the universal mounts I found were for 4 screw setups, but I was able to make it work no problem. It’s also extremely quiet. I’d say it’s only slightly louder than my ceiling fan. It’s a great projector. It’s the best projector I’ve ever owned, but I only owned cheap ones prior to this, so I don’t know how it compares to others in this price range. I think my dad may actually buy one for himself. He saw mine and wanted one.P.S. the projector doesn’t have blue tooth, so if you want to sync it up to your blue tooth system, you’ll want to get a transmitter. It has 1 usb port, but it is for power only, meaning you can’t plug in a usb drive and play movies or music.

    Disappointing in many ways

I’ve been using DLP projectors for home theater for 15 years, and this Optoma HZ39HDR is the first one that really felt like it has early-adopter issues. This is also the first projector I’ve had where I could easily detect rainbow artifacts. It is most noticeable with scrolling content such as the media carousels in a Netflix app.The rainbows aren’t what bothers me most, though. High-contrast details get smeared just a little bit. This is quite apparent in white subtitles and some app UI elements which look substantially less crisp than on other 1080p displays and even other 1080p projectors. I suspect they used a poor quality lens, because I’ve never seen an issue like this on any other projector. There’s also chromatic abberation which is hard to eliminate because the lens doesn’t focus evenly across the entire screen. Check out the photos I uploaded. It is supposed to be row and column of sharp white pixels, with an orange curve coming to meet the horizontal white line. Instead, you see all kinds of smear and colors that shouldn’t be there. This is mainly noticeable as a problem only when close to the screen. If I had purchased this as a replacement for my main home theater, I would have returned it without hesitation. My much older, much smaller, and actually cheaper BenQ W1070 with a bulb provides a substantially better picture. But this is a secondary projector for me that I put in my bedroom, so I let these flaws slide because I really wanted a laser projector so I’d never need to replace its bulb. A bulb gets dimmer over time and eventually becomes unusable, either gradually or very suddenly when it pops and goes out. That should never happen during the useful life of this model.I was hoping the laser light source would allow the projector to turn on and off much quicker than bulb-based projectors, but sadly the startup time is 30-40 seconds which is basically the same as any projector I’ve used. Turn-off time is quick, only about two seconds before the fan shuts off.Another motivation for my choosing this model was its 120hz 1080p input support and low latency. Fortunately, this did not disappoint. It worked just fine out of box without a firmware upgrade (which I couldn’t find anyway), and makes PC input feel substantially more responsive than a 60hz display.

    Amazingly sharp and bright

I have been eyeing up this projector for some time. I had a BenQ about 4 years old which was a great machine, but I had to replace the lamp a couple of time. I always felt that I could not get the brightness I was looking for so I decided to make a purchase for this machine. Some of the reviews I read were not that great, so I took a chance. The quality of the viewing has increase dramatically. I thought I was good at 30K contrast ratio, but now I am at 1Million contrast ration. In fact, it was so bright that I will never watch a regular TV again as I cannot tell the difference. It’s so good that I had to write a review. When I first got the package, I immediately hooked it up where my other projector was connected. I have an excellent sound system in my movie room, but I wanted to keep my budget low, but not too low. I had to make several adjustments as there was a pink spot on faces. It took several hours to really calibrate and learn the different settings. The settings that seem to be perfect are Display Mode Cinema, Gamma set to Film, Brilliant Color set to 5, Sharpness to 11, Color Temp to Cool, Brightness Mode to Constant Luminance to 85%, Wall Color Off as I have a built my screen with a nice painted very light grey. I used the same setting for gaming which are perfect. Watching football is like actually being at the game. Nothing beats great sound and an amazing picture. The picture above do not do it justice. For a low budget solution, then I highly recommend. One thing I was concerned with was the heat dissipation that others were saying, but does not seem to be an issue. I use roughly 5 to 8 hours a day.

    Great Budget projector

Update: 5/18/2020I increased this review to 4 stars. I was able to resolve the power on issue by using a power strip between outlet and the projector. I am not sure why this works but I am inclined to think the issue could be the power outlet itself. I have not taken the projector down to test on another outlet. This picture quality in 2d/3D modes is awesome considering the price. I was not prepared to pay a premium of a top of the line projector. This is a great entry level projector.I am on projector number two and both projectors have shown the same issue. The remote control stopped powering on the projector after a few days. I contacted optoma and amazon to while I had the first unit but they were unable to troubleshoot the issue. Optoma offered to send me a new remote control but I opted to return the projector for a replacement. The replacement worked fine out of the box for a week and then the power on issue started. I really don’t understand it. Every button on the remote works except the power on button. Unplugging the unit from power will make the power on from the remote work temporarily but it only last 1-2 power cycles. It’s very frustrating since the projector is ceiling mounted and I am the only one in our home who can power it on without a ladder or step stool. The picture quality and the 3d is great for the price. The light from the picture does bleed over the screen about 5 in along each side. This is due to the chip used in this unit and is not avoidable. I would give this projector 4 stars if the power on issues from the remote could be resolved.

Works well for home theater use

I have owned an Optoma in the past, but the unit I had was not ceiling mountable so I was looking for something I could mount permanently in my pool/lanai area. My requirements were pretty simple: 1) ceiling mountable and ability to flip the image so you can be on either side of a transparent screen (check) 2) throw distance of about 12 feet but adjustable +/- (check) 3) builtin speakers, but the ability to connect to external speakers (check, 3.5 mm output to bluetooth transmitter works well) 4) good picture (check and check) and 5) less than $1K (check). My main concern before purchasing was really the picture quality. I see many reviews complaining about oversplash or picture quality, I am not seeing those issues.I adjusted the picture a bit based on distance to make sure that it fits on my projector screen and the keystone is acceptable, and other than that I am very happy with the picture. It’s definitely as good as a decent LCD TV, although it may not be comparable to a very high end projector or high end TV, it’s more than adequate for watching TV and movies. I have my Roku hooked up to it and regularly watch it for several hours at a time and I’ve never once though the picture was less than good.I also see people complaining about the noise and heat. The projector does get hot, that’s normal in my experience, same goes for the fan noise. For my use case, ceiling mounted about 6 feet above my head, these are complete non-issues. I don’t notice either the heat or the noise, I just know they are there based on my experience mounting it and adjusting the picture while on a ladder, once the device was mounted I haven’t given it a second thought. Since the projector is only 1 month old, I’m only giving it 4 stars until I see how long the projector lasts before upgrading to 5 (or downgrading as the case might be). All things considered I am very happy with my purchase and it works nearly perfectly for my use case (permanent mount for home theater use)

    Great for 3D Blu-Ray movies

I bought this projector to relive and share the experience of seeing the movie Alita: Battle Angel in 3D with family and friends. Seeing Alita in an IMAX 3D theater was the best movie experience I’ve ever had, so I wanted to find an affordable way to bring the most spectacular and rewatchable movie I’ve ever seen home. The Alita: Battle Angel 3D Blu-Ray wasn’t released until two months after I bought the projector, so I tried Pacific Rim with the Optoma HD143X projector, a 100″ screen, and 3D Pergear DLP glasses, and my family loved it! For my family, it was the first time they saw Pacific Rim, and I don’t think that they would have loved it nearly as much if it wasn’t for the brilliant 3D video delivered by this projector. I used a Playstation 3 with an HDMI cable to play the 3D Blu-Ray for Pacific Rim, and I learned the hard way that in order for the PS3 to recognize the projector as a 3D device, the projector has to be turned on first and switched to 3D DLP mode before the PS3 is turned on. After finally getting Alita: Battle Angel 3D on Blu-ray, I was enormously impressed at how close the Optoma 3D home theater experience came to my original mind blowing experience in IMAX 3D. Seeing Alita’s incredible action and heart on a great 3D home projector was a dream come true, and I plan to show Alita to everyone I can in an outdoor theater setup. I’ve also connected a laptop to the projector with the HDMI cable, and brightly lit videos look great even in daylight. On the other hand, dark videos and movies look much better in a dark room than in daylight. I was originally concerned about active shutter 3D DLP glasses making the image darker, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the glasses didn’t noticeably change the image quality. I was also found the Pergear 3D DLP glasses to be reasonably priced . I originally wanted to buy a 3D TV, but affordable sets are hard to find since the major manufacturers discontinued them a few years ago. This projector convinced me that it is much more impressive to use 3D DLP projection on a 100″ screen than a 3D TV anyway. The portability of using a 3D projector outdoors is also a big advantage over a 3D TV.

    Pros and cons

I use this projector for my only source of TV and have been using it everyday.Pros- picture quality is good and you can see the picture without having to shut off the lights.Cons- it’s not wireless or Bluetooth capable! I have owned another projector in the past that was cheap and that had both of those. If I would have known I couldn’t hook anything wireless to it , I would have not purchased it.If you are using a firestick then you can hook the speakers to that. Sound is not good and you will absolutely need a set of speakers.I wish the keystone settings would allow you to have it off centered such as a corner so you don’t have to have it right in the middle.Overall it’s a great product but know your setup and make sure that works with you. I am with other people on it does check all the boxes but also forgot to check the basic ones. I still give it a good rating because at the end of the day it’s giving me a good picture quality

    Laser Compromise

This review is for the Optoma HZ39HDR.On paper this projector checked all my boxes. It is a gaming projector with low input-lag, it has 4000 lumens of brightness for ambient-light viewing, and it runs on a laser source for full-on years of projectory goodness. All from industry-standard Optoma for $1199 (My price). The sad reality is that compromises had to be made. It seems that way. I’ve sent back two of these now, and have jumped ship. Both projectors featured focus uniformity issues. This means the entire image can’t be in focus at once.On my first projector I found that If I focused the bottom middle of the image, the top right corner would come out of focus, and vice versa. I tested in multiple environments. To top it off, the right side of the projector bled green around the white pixels, giving it a hue. Given a balance between the focus areas, and during most content, this was fine. But it bothered me, so I replaced it.The second projector had much better uniform focus (top left corner this time, but not as bad). However, the entire image had a twist upward and a curving slant. Once again, tested in multiple environments. This made it near impossible to center on a screen. The lower right edge bled yellow and faded on any white-centric scene. Unacceptable. It went back as well.At this price-point a little research will show you that lens manufacturing issues are varied and common. They may not bother you. Both projectors could display down-scaled 4k input on their 1080P native with absolute beauty. Both generally looked fine. Motion was smooth in games and color was acceptable. Brightness was certainly suitable for some ambient light.Perhaps these issues wouldn’t be deal-breakers for you. I give it 3 stars. This is still one of the cheapest ways to get the long-lasting might of a Laser projector, and is perhaps the only gaming laser projector available (aside from its short-throw cousin).Simply be advised of its potential flaws before buying.

Definitely worth the money and loving it so far

I read many of the reviews on Amazon about the oversplash and at the same time looked at some of the professional reviews from ProjectorCentral and such. Decided to give it a shot nevertheless and I am glad I did. The oversplash phenomenon while present does not detract the overall experience for an average consumer. It is so mild and sometimes non existent depending on the content and brightness levels. I was able to enjoy a very bright and razor sharp 140inch display without the oversplash while connecting my Xbox One and Android TV.The menu system is very detailed and gives you a lot of control. One cool thing is, I get to choose the color of the wall on which the image will be projected and that automatically optimizes the output color setting accordingly. The 10 second menu timeout issue did not have an impact for me since the menu disappears only if you leave it idle for 10 full seconds. I would have loved more zoom length but for the money I paid, I can live with that.I haven’t tried the 3D yet but gaming was very immersive. Even without using the Game mode, I didn’t experience any noticeable lag on Need for Speed and Forza. Haven’t tried any FPS games but I am sure the experience will be positive. I will update the review with more findings soon.Negative: The one thing that I am not happy about is the height adjustment screws at the bottom. Only two of the three are moving, the other one is just molded plastic and does not move. If you have an uneven surface for placing the projector, this is a real challenge. Optoma needs to explain why they did this and also make it clear in their manuals (the manual still says “three height adjustment screws”).

Not bad for the price, but I cannot recommend

We have been using projectors instead of televisions in our house for about 15 years and this is our third one. Our Panasonic and Epson projectors lasted years, but we had to change bulbs several times. The promised extremely long bulb life and good price convinced me to try Optoma. The brightness is excellent and the picture is very good, with one potentially serious problem: There is a flickering band approximately 100 – 150 lines tall that appears intermittently all the way across the screen at various locations. It only lasts for less than a second, but sometimes occurs several times in quick succession. I contacted Optoma support through their website and after a delay of over 3 weeks, I got an email reply that a technician would be contacting me within 24 hours. When I did not receive the promised follow-up, I called their hotline. The technician was very friendly and seemed knowledgeable. He suggested that the problem was probably the HDMI cable, and that I could test it by bringing up the menu when the flickering occurred to see if the flickering obscured the menu. Since the phenomenon lasts less than a second, I have not been able to do that. I did, however, have another cable. The flickering persists, but because of the delay, the 30 DAY warranty has now expired. The picture is very good and the flickering is unobtrusive, my wife didn’t even notice it until I pointed it out to her, so we will keep this projector as is. The Optoma warranty would now require us to send it off for repair and we would be without any video for weeks! If the problem becomes worse, we will just buy a different brand.

How could they put this beautiful unit together and not have Bluetooth!!! My sound bar will not pick up the adapters I tried so I have to run a 20 foot HDMI CABLE across my living room. Love the quality of the picture but seriously thinking about returning it because of that.

    Very bright!

I have been taking this projector through it’s available options for the last month. I installed my projection screen on my north wall and I was pleasantly surprised that even with a window exposed on the south wall, I was still able to get a very usable image. We normally watch this with the recessed ceiling lights and the wall sconces set on their most dimmed setting. There is no need for complete darkness in the theater. With all the lights off, this projector still lights up the room by itself. I love the amount of zoom available. It makes it a lot easier to get the perfect picture size. There are several image settings to choose from. The Presentation and Bright settings are great when the room is more well lit. I have used several of the other settings for different shows and movies we are viewing. I love that I was able to set the User setting to my desired image. We have a 135 inch screen from Elite Screens and they are a perfect combination. The only thing I have not tried is 3D, which I currently don’t have a 3D source. I’m anxious to see how that will look.

BUYERS BEWARE – Good for a bit, but doesn’t last long

The image quality and overall machine quality is great out of the box. Unfortunately, right around when your warranty runs out you will start having white pixels appear all over the screen, which ruins your viewing experience on anything that has dark screens in it, so basically every movie and game ever. Optoma will tell you they’ll extend your warranty, while they source parts, but then they can’t get you the actual part. Amazon won’t help because it’s past manufacturer warranty. We had a Benq before this, and I would order a Benq at double the cost of this POS.

    Great Product for the price

This is an excellent projector for the price. True ANSI 3600 lumens is awesome, it can be used in medium light conditions without a problem, has great resolution, and impressively vivid and clear images. The operation is very silent, but the internal speaker sucks, which I don’t care as I use my Bluetooth speakers through AppleTV. The only thing I find a little disappointing is that it comes with a single HDMI connection port, two would’ve been great. I was tempted to buy one of the cheaper options (Yaber, Vankio, and the like), but I hated the fact that they are not transparent regarding real ANSI lumens. I tried to contact them about it but they never responded. Good luck if you want to pay half the price for a doubtful product, I think you’ll get what you paid for.Update 1/12/2024: The projector still working great, with zero issues so far after more than a couple of years of use. I connect it to my AppleTV to watch movies and series on a 200″ screen on the bare wall (I don’t even need a projector screen).

    Stunningly Amazing Projector!

I honestly could not be happier! I did countless hours of research on this product and it truly paid off and blew away my expectations! I bought an ABOX projector about a year ago for $130 and after a year it burned out. This Optima HD 143X is mind blowing. The picture is honestly better, brighter, and clearer than my 1080p flat screen TV. The 3D is also phenomenal if you are into that. The best thing about this model is that the bulbs, rated for 10,000 hours!, are only about $60 to replace, which is incredible compared to the average being a few hundred! Do not hesitate and buy this now, you will not regret it. The picture is even so bright you can have it going with the lights on which is unheard of for a projector in this price range. There is a reason why it is #1 on every projector site for budget projectors. Depending on your space I believe it goes up to 330 in! I have it at about 100in now due to limited space. I also did buy the square trade 4 year plan because with something this price the extra $30 seemed worth it. Have had for a few weeks but will never go back to a regular TV. This truly turns every movie, show, and video game into a theatrical experience. I also highly recommend the HomeGear 110in electric screen, also on Amazon. So cool with the press of a button it raises and lowers and the quality is great. Hope this helps someone!

Hundreds of dead pixels at 3700 hrs of usage

It was great when it was new, but now at 3 years it’s picked up 100s of dead pixels. It’s only got 3700 hrs on it. It’s gotten to the point where it’s noticeable during day-to-day usage even 10′. The size is great and the brightness is good even during the day (without blackout curtains). But it’s clear I should have gone for a different brand/TV.I’ve sent an email to Optoma support but I’m not hopeful. The Dell projector I had before this still going strong at 4300 hrs with no dead pixels.

Perhaps should have gotten the older model?

The picture is great a world of difference from the 10yr old Infocus we are replacing. We were taken back though by this purchase the moment we opened the Amazon shipping box. This because the Optoma box inside had a large red tag on it. There was also a second tag with warning on it to remove this tag. Both were related to the box failing a weight check. We did not find anything missing so we proceeded to install it.It was a ceiling mount so we needed to change the settings but this was an issue. It may be due to being used to used to the Infocus but it was annoying and disconcerting. The annoying part is the on screen selection menu turns itself off very quickly so trying to read it (especially while its still upside down) was difficult. It should have a longer delay or not turn off until we exit from it. We were able to use the manual to figure out where the setting we needed was in the submenus. The second issue and was we mentioned disconcerting is that the items in that submenu were not appearing. We sent an email to Optoma to ask for help, which they suggest before returning an item, but after 4 days still no response. The good news is we figured out why it wasn’t working. We had not hooked up an hdmi input to it. Guess the logic is you shouldn’t be able to adjust some of the display parameters if its not displaying a picture. This is stupid in our opinion and annoying. On the infocus we had a solid color with their brand on it to allow us to get through things like flipping the image upside down and making other adjustments prior to using a live feed. The other problem with this is now you have the menu showing over a distracting movie/tv/etc image, which for initial setup to us was a pain.Last like others mention it does have a large overshoot around the image. We should have gotten the 142x it seems but we chose this for the supposed longer bulb life. We won’t send it back though because it was so much work getting it the right distance, angle, and mounted to the ceiling. Oh one other thing. Since the image is so sharp and powerful now the slight wave in our projector screen reflects back as distortion or if a movie is panning like a rolling image in that section of our screen. We’ll need to stretch it out, and or put a rigid frame behind it, to give us a perfectly flat surface across the entire screen image.

    Projector good………Customer service bad.

Bought this projector about Jan 6th. Had it all set up then the remote won’t work unless your within 4 feet of the unit! Tried new batteries, universal remote, nothing worked. Emailed Optoma, they said ship it to us “At Your Expense”! Cost me $50 to ship a brand new projector to them! Totally ticked me off. I waited till now to write this review because I just NOW got the projector back! Was afraid they would have held it for ransom if I wrote this review too early. It’s just crazy to pay $50 out of my pocket for their own faulty projector that somehow passed quality control.ANYWAY, the projector itself is very good. The darker the room, the better the picture. You can have a lamp on and the picture is ok. Pretty simple to set up. I pre-measured the distance I need for a 150″ screen and mounted the projector on the ceiling. Perfect distance. If it wasn’t for paying to ship a bad projector, not to mention they had it for almost 2 months, they would have had a happy camper. Can you say “BenQ”?

Replaced my ceiling mounted Optima HD30

Amazing difference in picture. One of the fans on the HD30 stopped working so I opted to replace v repair and thankful I did. It only took 10 minutes to swap them out. My ceiling mount system worked fine one I was able to find screws that worked. The new unit uses bigger screws than the previous one and did not come with them. I fortunately had a set of screws that fit. They should have included them. The new unit is totally quiet with no fan noise. It boots up and shuts down in mere seconds and provides a great Hi Def picture

Don’t waste your money. BUY AN EPSON PROJECTOR INSTEAD.

I BOUGHT THIS PROJECTOR BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BEST *bang for my *buck! Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed. The projector is pretty loud and there is only ONE HMDI opening. This confused me because the remote has “HMDI 1” and “HDMI 2” and the pamphlet that comes with it also says there’s two HDMI inputs. The projector also smells like something is burning?? Weird. I haven’t mounted it to my ceiling yet, but I see that people have had an issue with this because the projection needs to be head on, meaning if you’re sitting on the couch you will probably be blocking the projector. The audio is SOOOOOO trash! Oh my god, the audio sucks so bad. I am grateful I bought a sound bar.Pros: the bulb is very bright. Here is a picture of it without my blackout curtains hung yet.Point is: this projector is worth maybe $200-$300 AT MOST. This is way overpriced for all the cons that come with it.It’s only day 3 of having this projector. Hopefully it works out well, because people have issues getting a refund from Amazon and id rather just stick it out.IF YOU TAKE ANYTHING FROM THIS REVIEW:!!!!!!!!Go buy an EPSON. It’s a little cheaper and my experience with that brand has always been phenomenal!!!!!!!!!!

    Great, but limited.

Good for movies up to Blu-Ray quality, or only a single gaming device.I really, really dislike that there’s only one HDMI port on this thing. It seems like a cut corner, and makes using multiple devices difficult. You’ll need a high quality receiver with a fast processor if you were planning on doing gaming with this thing. It’s a pretty fast projector, but it won’t win any awards with refresh speed. However, when combined with an entry-level receiver, you will notice a severe lag between input on your controller and action on the screen. That would be mitigated if there were just two HDMI ports.

I am loving it! Great HDR picture for little $

The lack of being able to go to a movie theater this year was grating on me so I spent a lot of time researching this projector. The 4K projectors are still a little pricey and most of them are not 4K anyway using pixel shifting to double or quadruple pixel count. I decided a 1080p projector which could take a 4K source and supporting HDR would give me the best bang for the buck. This projector does not disappoint. Super bright laser and I can watch it in my bright lounge with no shades. At night this projector gives as good a picture with true colors as my 4K Samsung only 110” diagonal. I can live with not being 4K for a while until prices drop and at 14ft from the screen 1080p looks just as good as 4K. It does take a little while to sync when changing resolution, maybe 5 to 8 seconds but this seems to be common on projectors and I am running it at 4K over a 30ft regular hdmi cable so that will make syncing a little trickier anyhow.

SIMPLY AMAZING! I cant believe the difference

Guys, I have been doing research on a projector for my office for a long time. At first, couldn’t really afford it but really didn’t know where to turn. I looked at the BENQ line and also Optoma’s lamp projectors. A week ago I came across laser technology for projectors.I said, ok surely there is no way I could afford this. Dumb luck I went to Optoma’s site, and sure enough, there it was. I immediately started to research technology from different sources. Hands down, even in Europe this device is the rage. It was extremely easy to set up (I was intimidated but I was wrong)!I immediately went to Amazon just to see what they are going for. To my surprise, it was priced extremely well-given technology it packs. I got it, took me 20 min to setup. Now the pic you see is on my bare wall! I am waiting for the screen to arrive from Amazon. Even without it, it brilliant! You can even connect it to your PC via HDMI or use NVIDIA Shield as I do.A+ GREAT BUY!!!

    Delivers Well

I found HD143X after a lot of searching online for under $500 HD projectors and post seeing what this delivers I cannot complain about the 3 hr wasted in searching. This device delivers the goods at least the critical ones amazing color/picture/brightness. Only caveat, they over market the feature. e.g. Wifi connectivity… well that comes with additional $200+ devices or through multiple devices in the market like chromecast etc (I am assuming that would work have not tried it). You would need to purchase a HDMI cable as it does not come with the projector. Other marketing flaw, they indicate this is a portable device, though light it is not one of the most portable projectors (not comparing to pico’s) and its bulky. Build quality is also not that great (but then that is the reason it is cheaper than 90% of the HD projectors out there). Overall i would say its a good buy for small business or for a family movie/game night. Last but not least Amazon keeps fluctuating the prices (~$40) through the day so wait for it and please dont buy at the high.

    It’s awesome. You’ll be happy!

I’m sure this would work great inside a home theater room but we purchased for our outdoor movie nights. The pictures is great, it has to be dark outside or you have to have a dark room. For the price of this projector it’s a great option. To make set up easy, we use HDMI cable from an Apple TV to the projector. Then use the audio out to a small stereo amp for speaker power. You’ll most certainly want to hook this up with speakers. The speaker inside the projector is similar to a cell phone…. apple sometimes does not play well with other devices and we have not had an issue with any movies we have watched. Which includes Disney, marvel, Pixar, etc… I’m guessing if it works with an Apple TV and plays the higher budget films, this projector should work with any external player just fine. I’m my experience, apple products tend to be more problematic when it comes to security on their content. Final note, I’m happy I purchased this projector.

    Incredible picture on the HZ39HDR

I like this projector so much, that I can hardly watch my 4K TV. The picture is super clear and detailed. The 300,000 to 1 contrast ratio really brings the images to life. HDR is the only way to go. The projector must be fed with a high quality 4K, HDR signal to get the best results. The unit is not native 4K, but the picture is so good, I doubt it could be much better. Use it with a good screen or you are wasting your money. There are plenty under $150. Use a good two channel sound system and you are there. It really needs a dark room. It doesn’t have to be completely blacked out, but fairly dark. The darker the room, the better the picture. The instructions are horrible and the remote is difficult to use, but once you get set up, it’s basically just on and off.

Excellent 3D projector but need better remote range

I am really impressed with the clarity and brightness of this projector. I installed this projector in my basement, I wanted to keep my lights on while using the projector just like we use our TV and this projector works really well in that aspect. I also love the 3D picture quality of this projector, It feels as if you are watching a 3D movie in the movie theater.I am a little disappointed with the Remote control you literally need to stand underneath the projector to operate the remote when this is installed on a ceiling. We sit about 12 feet away from the projector, if I need to Make any adjustment then I have to go close to projector to operate the remote, my earlier projector was barely $100 price but we could easily operate the remote from our couch placed 12 feet away from the projector. I generally sync my Harmon Kardon sounds system with my projector remote but now I ended up using two remotes.

    Best so far !!!!

Firstly, I am not a gamer, so I could not speak to that feature, however, I use it mainly for movies. The unit is very easy to setup to your liking and purpose. After tweeking a few settings, the picture is incredible, bright and sharp. The colors seem to rival the colors on my HD tv. I can make this comparison because fios in my area scroll ads in Hidef when the box is not powered on and that is my baseline for the crisp sharp focus. The unit is a bit heavy but if you do not have to move it around, then no problem. Last but no lease, the zoom feature allowed me to fit the picture perfectly on a 100′ screen without loss of picture quality. Stand-by for more later !!!

Great projector for 2 months, then many dead pixels. Poor warranty support.

This was my first projector, so I was looking for something that was lower cost but still offered a quality image for movies and video games in our newly finished basement. After research this seemed like my best option in the sub $500 price tier. Was really pleased with the image and it fit our needs really well, until about 5 weeks into usage I noticed a few white dots on the screen, with several new dots appearing seemingly every few days. After a little online research I found out this is a common problem with Optoma projectors (dead pixels related to the DLP technology). I contacted Optoma online for support but it took weeks to get a response other than an automated reply (I filled out multiple warranty service request forms). When I did get a response the workers I interacted with were great and really helpful, but the warranty itself is not great (Optoma wanted to do a repair, when I think a replacement makes sense that early in its life cycle while under warranty, and they required that I pay out of pocket to package, insure, and ship the product to them, while also waiting the approximately 7-10 business days after receipt for the projector to be returned to me). I then turned to Amazon to see if they could provide product support and they readily issued a refund and provided clear instructions for a hassle-free return. Really glad I bought through Amazon on this one. After this experience I decided to go with a different projector style and manufacturer (Epson, 3LCD) and to go up a tier in quality (into the sub $1000 grouping). The difference in image quality and features (really appreciating the vertical lens shift and flexible throw distances on this new one compared to the 143x!) has made the extra cost well worth it for our needs.

Warning, this has a very specific mounting requirement

I bought this because of the reviews. I set it up and it is definitely a nice bright picture. Everything was great until I realized that the picture that shows the mounting options – it is literal. The bottom of your screen is exactly horizontal with the top of the table that you set your projector on. The manual states very clearly:Do not operate the projector in any orientation other that table top or ceiling mount. The projector should be horizontal and not tilted either forwards/backwards or left/right. Any other orientation will invalidate the warranty and may shorten the lifetime of the projector lamp or the projector itself. For none standard installation advise please contact Optoma. For us, to get to 120″, the project must be 13′ from the screen, which is fine except that there is a couch in front. We can not ceiling mount and so this means that NO ONE can sit on the couch in front of the projector. I am used to projectors throwing center so you can raise the projector to any arbitrary height. Not this one. The only other option is for us to put the project in front of the couch, which means a much smaller projection. This is a serious design flaw in my opinion. I have tempted to send it back.

    Majestic. Bold. America.

**EDIT: Well, the lamp popped on us last night, definitely nowhere near 12,000hr of use, it hardly lasted 7months. We invested in this one because we REALLY didn’t want to be shelling out money for a replacement bulb twice a year. If we can FIND a bulb. Damn.**Our wall is purple. This beast projects white light onto our purple wall WITHOUT A SCREEN and the light is, indeed, white. This is a powerful projector that has served us beautifully for over a few months now. We put our Roku HDMI stick into one of the 2 HDMI ports in the back (with the USB power attachment conveniently fitting right into the USB port in the back of the projector) and our gaming consoles into the other (sharing an HDMI), and I’m not ashamed to admit that I shed tears at the majesty. There’s a whole array of color / brightness / contrast / tint / etc. options to zero in on your optimal image. There’s also a really great Eco Mode that dims the screen a little, which we use for nighttime viewing before going to sleep. When the Eco Mode is off, Bright Mode is engaged and an internal fan turns on. It’s really not loud at all and doesn’t do anything to cover or muffle the internal speaker (which IS quite audible, even at a volume setting of 1. how high it goes, I don’t know, because I’ve never set it above 3 and that was with a room full of people). We have it set up about 10-12 feet away from our wall, for reference. The image is wonderfully giant compared to TVs I’ve had in the past, and I don’t think I could be any happier for all of the considering the price point.

    perfect for gaming

refresh is so fast that you don’t even realize it’s a projector. picture quality is good but i don’t have a screen for it, and it’s i have it aimed at a somewhat uneven dorm room wall, so i can’t speak much to it, but it’s definitely as advertised for sharpness at its max size. i also got it used but whoever had it before me left all the original plastic protection coverings on and repackaged it perfectly it so it was basically new for me. great product for $500. way better than a tv that would be the same price, plus it’s easy to pack to fly here and home from my college, where a tv would not be possible. my family has always been a tv family but i think i’m converting to projectorism permanently lol. It’s darks are also surprisingly dark for a projector. As for brightness it’s good during daytime inside as long as you have blinds half closed, and it’s incredible at night. i’ve had to turn the brightness down for night use. i haven’t used it outside at night but i assume it’s just as good as it is indoors.

    Super bright budget projector

This projector is a great value and offers a lot of “bang for your buck”. Super bright, I used this outdoors at noon in full sunlight and the video was watchable; mind you it wasn’t the best picture but you could see the full scenes of the movie and understand what was happening. I purchased this after being frustrated with the LG PH550. The LG is a nice little projector if portability is your top priority, but it’s only 550 lumens, so it can only get so bright—it was unwatchable until sunset started which just didn’t work for what I planned on using it for.Overall there are only a few things I wish this Optoma had: 1) Bluetooth audio connection 2) Built-in screen-sharing/miracasting. Those two features would have made this a solid 5, but I I still would recommend this projector for people who want a bright projector but don’t care as much about portability—on that note, this does have a speaker built-in to it and it works OK so it is “portable” in that sense, but it is not battery powered

its great but has a few kinks

i got this projector after getting a cheap Chinese 200 dollar one and the difference is almost night and day in terms of brightness and clarity. this is easily the best projector i’ve seen but i’m still fairly new into the projector area it has a really nice clear picture that compares to a 1080 tv easily it has very minimal rainbow effects and for the price what i’ve seen is really good.with that said tho there are a couple things that bother me that need fixed in my opinion. one being that the back of the projector the back right leg is adjustable incase you need to point the projector downwards but its only the back right leg. so it makes it kinda lopsided so you have to stack something under the other leg which seems like a design flaw…. the other being that while the rainbow effect is pretty minimal its still present, and from what i’ve read no body got a lens cap with it which i guess isn’t REQUIRED but how else are you supposed to protect the lens?overall i’d recommend this projector for the price unless you want to spend a good 150$ more on a lcd one of similar quality.

One problem I have is that I use this primarily from behind the couch, at about eye level. At this particular height (probably the least common), the image is projected too high for the space I want it in. The instructions say the project has to be fairly level when in operation (I think the allowable angle change from level is +/-15°). So basically it has to be at coffee table height or hanging from the ceiling.Bluetooth audio capability would have been nice.A larger range of screen sizes via the zoom function would have been helpful.More input options would have been nice too…it only has 1 HDMI port and nothing else. There is a USB power OUT port, but not sure what I would use that for…I tried to use it with a USB-powered speaker, and a loud piercing noise was observed.Overall, though, I love it. The screen is fairly bright even during the day. I am currently projecting on a non-prepped, light gray wall until a permanent solution is decided upon, and I am still amazed at the quality of the image. I may do nothing further as far as the ‘screen’ is concerned. My main reason for selecting this model was its 3D capability. It’s outstanding, at least to my eyes. Again, I am projecting onto a light gray wall–I was wondering if the 3D would work at all but it does, fabulously. It has 2 3D modes (i forget what the second one is) but I use DLP Link mode and DLP Link glasses that I bought here at Amazon:-DLP Link 3D Glasses, ELEPHAS 144Hz Rechargeable Active Shutter Eyewear for Most DLP-Link 3D Projectors- Acer, ViewSonic, BenQ Vivitek, Optoma, Panasonic, Dell, Viewsonic (4 Pack)In case you were wondering, 3D DLP Link glasses sync with the images on the screen by a nearly invisible (to naked eyes) rapid white flash embedded in the 3D video. These should not be confused with 3D DLP glasses (similar name but without the ‘LINK’) which require an IR emitter pointed at the viewers to sync the glasses for proper 3D viewing.

Bright image, quiet fan, great projector

Bought this projector to replace an acer brand projector with a failing fan motor. We have the projector in the family room and use it daily to watch TV programs and movies. On average it gets used about 15-20 hours a week. The projector is much quieter than any other DLP projector Ive owned over the years. In fact, even with a “library level” of sound, I can not hear it running at all when the projector is in eco/regular mode. When in bright mode, for 3D movies or gaming, a very modest fan can be heard but it certainly on par with any other comparable DLP projector. The thickness of the projector itself and also its depth front to back, is a bit bigger than others ive owned but only by about an inch or so.The remote is backlit when buttons are pressed which is a nice touch. The image is bright enough that I can comfortably watch tv with 4 60watt ceiling fan bulbs being on and the image isnt washed out, but of course this and any other projectors are designed to be used in low light environments, in which this projector has a superb image quality. Multiple digital adjustments of keystone, image position and digital zoom to make fine adjustments to image size and even can adjust the levelling of image if your projector mount is not level or maybe your screen masking is not perfectly straight. A two part adjusting lens lets you dial in the perfect image size for your setup too. This projector is for a throw distance of about 15ft max for a 100″ screen image. My throw is about 11ft from the lens to the screen and I have it projecting an image size of 110″ wide X 66″ tall.I havent used the 3D capability of the projector yet but anticipate the quality to be on par but perhaps even better as there are multiple 3D settings/options for the best experience using that mode just make sure you have 3D DLP shutter lens glasses.Overall, I am very pleased with this projector and would recommend it to others eapecially if looking to have a high lumen output that is for everyday use as a primary display in the home.I did purchase the amazon offered insurance/warranty based on service level and price alone versus cost of projector and its typical lifespan.

    Great image quality, limited connectivity.

This projector really surprised me. Its really bright, has decent colors and contrast. Sharp image, fast response times. For the price you wont find a better projector. In a room with some light its still visible and easy to see whats going on but anything dark will get glared out. The adjustment options and tools are nice. Has focus AND optical zoom adjustment. The only complaints I have about this unit is its limited connectivity, it lacks multiple display connections (1 HDMI), no bluetooth for audio hookup.I wish the mounting holes were more spread apart, but not a big deal.

Fantastic brightness and picture quality for this price range

I was looking at $1k-$2k projectors for about a year and picked this one up for under $500 during the holidays. I was stunned at the brightness and picture quality. The tight limits for projection distance and zoom made me work a bit harder to get it in the correct position although it was well worth the effort. As you might already know, utilizing keystone adjustments will degrade picture quality so I spent considerable time making sure that the projector height and centerline were exact. I am very pleased with the performance so far and I’m amazed at the picture quality.

Picture looks great…for me. Happy with purchase.

I bought this knowing it is only a native 1080p projector and does not support 4K. It does, but it downgrades it. 4K projectors are still very expensive and not a whole lot of content yet so didn’t pull the plug. Most of the reviews on picture quality, features etc. are accurate so i am not going into it. I own a 1080p 46 inch 3d Samsung TV from 2010 that I am using for comparison. So with that in background I am sharing my practical experience to help you decide if you should purchase this or any other HD projector:1. First this is not a short throw projector. Those are still $1k+ at the time of the review but this does add a disadvantage. Meaning projector has to be 6-7 feet minimum, aka you need a free basement or a really large room that is not frequently used. For this to work, you either have to mount it under ceiling…but again will run into problems running power and HDMI cables. Or on a coffee or side table (my setup) but then you have HDMI and Power cables running along the floor to a power outlet on the wall / receiver. In most homes you have to live it it and can partially cover it up using area rugs.2. The built in speakers are no fun, so have to connect to a surround sound system. HDMI cable issue as mentioned in #1. you could buy all wireless surround sound speakers and keep the receiver below the projector but you will still have power cable issue….unless you live in a modern home that has power outlets on the floor near by. I have one, but that is still too far away. Wall power point is closer.3. You need a screen. The size and height of room limits the screen size. I could fit a 100inch screen but it takes up a full wall (I live in east coast city with small rooms, but I do have 10 foot ceiling). Projecting on wall may work if you have a full bare wall (no switches, hvac controllers etc. and willing to paint it white. There is some color correction available if your wall is colored but it will definitely change the picture color.4. I may be happy with the resolution it because I am still using a 10 year old TV as reference, but it was top of the line (3k+ when it first arrived.) Those with UHD or 4K TVs…your mileage may vary as you have got used to seeing more details and a sharper image. When things are blown up, you tend to notice more defects.5. If you don’t have projector and screen fixed securely to wall you almost always have to re-focus and adjust screen (to correct keystone) every day. Again you get better and faster at it but still is a chore. Even slight movement of screen or projector throws off the focus. Now the positives…these mitigate some of the practical issues mentioned above:1. This thing is small and very light. you can unplug everything and put it away in 15 seconds. The cables you roll back to wall and/or receiver and you have the room back to normal.2. If you buy a collapsible screen (even if it is manual) with stand. you can roll it down in 30 seconds. But you cant put away…it is too long, but at least it is along a wall at the bottom. Installing everything back takes a few minutes, you get better and faster with practice. One word of Caution though: Once you get used to seeing movies on the 100+ inch screen it is tough to go back to a 46 inch screen no matter how good it is. So think twice before you leap!

Plan on always being irritated before watching a 3D movie!

The projector is bright and decent picture for a DLP.3D WARNING, this projector has an irritating green screen (submitted image) that pops up before a corrupted 3D image. You need to pause your 3D movie. TURN OFF the projector then TURN on the projector and it clears it. Optima has no clue what is going on (never saw it happen before). They expect me to send in the projector for repair after I just bought new from amazon! You’d think they would replace it? NOPE! And their customer service only directs you to filling out a standard form for repair instead of perhaps helping out with this particular situation. They could care less! The projector also loses its zoom position and focus position after a few weeks, so don’t mount it anywhere you can’t easily reach.I do recommend seeking other options. This projector, despite its image has been a big disappointment for me.UPDATE—The remote is extreamly annoying. Takes five or six times to turn projector on and off because some genius put the receiving sensor on the bottom of the projector and not in front! I’ve delt with it, but it’s irritating enough now to add this since I lost my patience and want to throw the remote into the wall every time. It has nothing to do with the plastic film over the sensor!! I had that removed since day 1!Update! Remote still is annoying garbage!!! 1/28/218/01/21 There are a number of scattered blacked out pixels I noticed on my projection screen. That’s insane for a projector just over 1yr and a few months. Only fix I researched was replacing a chip that could cost up to $150.00.SEE NEW IMAGE IN BLUE-Those tiny pixels are slowly turning black!! After 1 year!!! Look elsewhere!10/5/2021 I gave up on this failure of a machine and bought a Viewsonic PX701HD. Life just got so much better! Super quiet fan. Remote works like a normal remote. No 3D issues! Don’t be fooled by the contrast ratio difference vs Viewsonics. Viewsonic is less but I sure as heck can’t see any difference in the image quality. And 100lumens less isn’t a major difference either. Optima is out of my life for good now.

    Great value. Impressive features.

Very nice projector! Once I paired it with a FireTV Stick, I began looking forward to my evenings of theater-like movie experiences and great times watching sports. The first week, however had me doubting the purchase.Unlike most reviews I’ve read, The picture wasn’t ideal right out of the Box. It turns out the color space setting on auto, what’s causing the color range in the darkest areas to be quite muted. There seemed to be no way to get any details in the dark areas of the picture. Once I found the color range setting and set it to 0-255, the details matched my TV. I went a whole week trying to watch Stranger Things with my son, and having to look at my phone to see parts we missed. Now its perfect. There are a TON of ways to get the picture looking great, so if your first impression is not good, make sure you look into all the ways to calibrate it.For my room and cheap screen, GAME mode and ECO mode create dead on accurate colors and good contrast. The mild bleed from the lamp that frames the image when its pitch dark in the room is a tab bit annoying and shows the limitations of the blacks, but I learned to overlook it as the picture is pretty stunning otherwise. Bright outdoor scenes really show off the detail this projector is capable of. Really fantastic for sports if that’s your thing.Pros: Beautiful color reproduction and quite bright. Great, detailed picture.Cons: slightly limited blacks and a bit of light that frames the image.Overall an insane value! Best purchase since my Oculus Quest.

Gaming mode will not work if you need keystone adjustment or digital zoom.

I bought this based on all the marketing and reviews for this projector saying that it has very low input lag for gaming. That may be true, however there is a big caveat with this. Once I switched to the “Gaming Mode” to get that low input latency, projector removed all of my digital adjustments such as keystone and digital zoom. This means that for me to use this projector in its full, low latency mode, I have to position it EXACTLY to the height of the screen so that there is no keystone adjustment is needed, as well as as exact distance from the screen, to not need additional digital zoom. Unfortunately both of these do not work in my small room. Projector is too close to the screen even with the lens zoom all the way in, so I have to use digital zoom to shrink the image even further to fit it on the screen that I have. Also I cannot position this projector low enough to not require a keystone adjustment. Both of these make the Game mode useless to me.I understand that this is particular circumstances and not everyone will have these issues but it may help someone who is in similar situation to make a better decision.Overall projector is actually pretty decent. Picture is bright and clear. Watching on a grey screen boosts the contrast and with the blinds down it is actually a very nice picture during the day. Also I’ve been gaming on this projector and even without the gaming mode on, I honestly have no issues with whatever input lag it has in it’s normal settings, so it is still very usable for me.

Overall I’m happy with the Optoma HD143X, but it does have it’s flaws!

I bought the HD143X based on all the positive feedback from its predecessor, the HD142X. From everything I could tell the HD143X was “better” and simply an upgraded version of the HD142X.I have an Epson projector as well, which I use outdoors and in an office environment. It was about $550 and it’s my only frame of reference. That said, it was designed more for presentations than movies/tv, so I decided to look into other options more suitable for that type of viewing.I have the HD143X ceiling mounted, coupled with a Silver Ticket Productions 110″ white non acoustic screen, and also coupled with an Onkyo receiver and 5.1 Energy Take Classic Speakers. One thing I will point out is your indoor projector setup is only as good as your weakest link, so plan on a good screen and good sound otherwise you’re probably not going to be happy. Planning to use the projector’s internal speaker or projecting onto a makeshift screen is like driving a Ferrari on a dirt road…you have all that horsepower and refinement but you just won’t be able to put it to good use.Overall I’m happy with the HD143X, but it does have it’s flaws.Good:- It projects a very clear image. It’s not as clear as my 59″ 1080p TV, but I didn’t want to spring for a 4K projector just yet. I’m more finnicky than most but not a complete videophile, so if I’m happy with it I’d guess that covers about 90% of people out there who would agree. The other 10% won’t be happy with anything other than a 4K setup.- The noise from the fan is manageable.- Sitting beneath the projector the heat it puts out is not noticeable.- The brightness is adequate with all the lights on.Bad- There is a light “outline” around the entire outer edge, a few inches wide depending on the projection size. This is taken care of by my fixed screen, which absorbs it and makes it not noticeable so for me this is NOT an issue. However, if you’re NOT going to use a fixed screen to absorb light around the edges consider this a DEALBREAKER. Trust me you will be very annoyed by this, and it’s apparently something that’s innate to the DLP chip they chose. From a little research this appears to be a difference between the HD142X, which is just coming to light now and likely the reason for the lower rating you’re seeing on the HD143X.- There are 3 legs on the projector, two are adjustable and one is just part of the plastic…it’s fixed. Don’t ask me why this is the case, but if you wanted to simply rest this on a table that makes it pretty annoying.- The projector feels a bit “cheap” overall compared to my Epson projector. The Epson just seems to have a lot more ease of adjustability (screen display, zoom, right-left image movement/adjustment options, and the legs). For my uses, I’m always using the Epson on a table and it’s always set up then taken down. My Optoma is fixed mounted to the ceiling. Considering that, they both serve their purpose and the Optoma is fine because I set it up once and that was it. However, if you are NOT planning to mount the Optoma I feel like you’re going to be annoyed trying to get the picture how you want it compared to other projectors out there that have more adjustability. If you’re going to mount it like I did, then it’s not an issue.Overall I’m satisfied with the Optoma so far. This is highly contingent on the rest of my setup, so be sure to figure out how you’re going to set up yours before buying. If you’re looking at non-fixed screen or set up then take down scenarios, I would consider other options. If you’re going to use a fixed screen with a black edge and mount it, then the Optoma should satisfy you.

Awesome picture! BEWARE totally intended to be ceiling mounted!

So all in all it is an amazing picture. The added 3D functionality is a nice touch. For the price point this would have 5 stars except for 3 flaws. The first flaw isn’t a big one, but it is annoying: the internal speaker is SUPER quiet. Don’t expect to use it and have it be okay. It’s not loud enough to watch anything. The second flaw is a bit of a bigger issue: it is definitely not a short throw projector. At 15 ft, it falls short of filling a 120” screen with 4:3 ratio. (My indoor auto screen is 4:3). Don’t get me wrong, I’m rearranging my garage to get the extra foot I’m gonna need, but it’s a pain. The biggest sin of them all, however, is the third flaw: this unit is designed to be a ceiling mounted projector so it doesn’t project straight out but rather at and upward (or downward depending on the orientation) so if you plan to use a portable stand like I do, expect to have to put some considerable tilt on your projector. Also a minor gripe I can’t hold against them is that it comes with only one HDMI port. It’s clearly advertised in the specs here so at least they aren’t trying to hide this info. I missed that point so I only gave me to blame. It is, by far, the best picture of any projector I’ve ever owned, though.

243x is very good for the money.

I’ve had the 243x model now for almost 2 months and have used it nearly every day. Most of the time not even turning on my 4k tv just for the size factor. 100 in screen, with enough brightness to even have a light on in the background without it making the image unwatchable. Although, for best picture quality, all lights should be off. The biggest issues I have with the unit are no native Bluetooth capabilities, at least not without hooking up a laptop or some other device that you can connect to first. This isn’t probably an issue for most people, but I live in an apartment style home and usually need to wear headphones for anything I really want to turn up. The second issue I have is with the built in speaker controls. The speaker is plenty loud, but has a huge adjustment gap between 0-1 on the volume control. 0 is obviously no volume at all, but 1 is louder than 50% on my samsung tv. Without a stand alone sound source to eliminate the need of the built in speaker, there is no low volume option. Even 1 is usually too loud for me to watch action movies in an apartment setting, so I find myself just hooking up a laptop and connecting Bluetooth headphones, whereas I almost never needed to do this with my tv. I guess thats just the trade off for the larger picture. On a plus note, the throw is fantastic compared to my last model. Around 11 feet away and only about 6 inches hanging from the ceiling is enough to produce a 100 in screen hanging 14 inches from the ceiling on the other side of the room. Picture quality is pretty good. You can notice a quality loss if your used to a 4k tv, but the size increase to cost factor ratio make this issue pretty small. Especially since its still only 1080p. I would also put the adjustments quality level into this category as well. They do provide a fair amount of adjustment range as far as keystone, picture size, focus, and image shift before you start to loose too much image quality in the corners. But plan ahead when mounting as best as possible, as there isn’t too much room for error. I recommend not permanently mounting your screen until the projector is bolted down. Or placing the projector on top of a tall ladder to get it as close as possible before drilling your mount holes.I don’t give this unit a 5 star rating as I do have a few issues with it, but overall this a very good projector for the money. I expect I’ll probably upgrade to a 4k unit for my next projector, but I’m not convinced I’ll stay with Optoma unless I know the audio issues are no longer present.

HD146X Awesome out of the Box. Crossing fingers.

UPDATE: October 28, 2021 16 months so far and no problems.Original Review: June, 2020This HD146X is replacing a 5-6yr old Optoma 520 that finally had a problem and would only give a faded pink image.Liked the throw and spread of the last Optoma in our home theater and decided to go for this similarly performing latest model. I am a researcher… you know who you are of you are like me. Especially on sognifxnst purchases like this that are over $300-400 and are technical and electronic. So many choices out there today.I received this unit today n one day from Amazon. Cool!Out of the box, the immediate difference from our old Optoma 529 was brightness. Wow! Some reviews mention that this is bright enough to watch with some lights on on the room and there’s statements are 100% legitimate. Very bright and I’m very happy.Next, the throw on this unit is identical to our old 520. I installed on the same exeoli g mount and had to do NOTHING to adjust the zoom for our screen. I am projecting this on a 120” horizontal screen with a 16:9 screen format that o built myself when screens of this size were over $1,200. I built my own screen for about $180 and that was 6yrs ago. Also, it is FAR more quiet than our old Optoma 520. The fan nose bothered some buyers on the 520, but it never bothered us while watching movies. However this HD146X is VERay quiet even with the fan running. For you shoppers who also may have an Optoma projector you are looking tonrepoace, I’ve got one bit of bad news… this unit comes woth the same crust remote control, with SUPER bright backlot buttons that is way too bright. For me this is a no -issue as we control our home theater with a Logitech programmable remote. Just wanted everyone to know that the Optoma remote is functional and easy to use. However, it is lightweight plastic and the backlot buttons are crazy bright. Like you could use them to navigate your home on the dark instead of your smartphone flashlight.Out of the box I’m stoked. However, I’m crossing my fingers and hoping mine last longer than3-4months loke some other reviewers here. I definitely found the warranty registration card and immediately entry online and registered my unit just in case. This is a no frills unit that appears to have great quality video. I am a big Amazon review person and I believe in buying based on reviews so I pay it forward on stuff I buy. If there is any change, I certainly will update this review.

Going to work for just about everyone

I purchased this hesitantly after some research on it made me believe it was worth a shot given the low price. For reference, I have a 15’x15’ media room with no windows, a 110” white screen with a ceiling mount, a 7.1 surround system through a sony receiver; DirecTV and Apple TV connected. I don’t use this for gaming, don’t use 3D.I replaced a 7yr old EPSON 5030ub I bought for around $2400 in 2013, which was acting up in operations and had developed other visual problems. The repairs plus a soon to be needed $300 EPSON bulb were going to cost more than buying this Optoma so I decided to give it a try given its price, reviews, and free returns. Opening the box it looked quite a bit cheaper than my Epson, with a fairly dinky remote and no real instructions to speak of. Using the same universal mount I put it up, powered on and went to work. It was fairly easy to flip the image and get into focus, and had some controls to get the tilt correct. Immediately I was struck with the brightness, which was better than what I had with the Epson. The picture was comparable and I frankly couldn’t tell the difference right out of the box. After a week of watching various soccer matches, movies, and shows all of the viewers agreed it was just as good if not better than the Epson. There are a couple of deficiencies that I notice I doubt the rest of the family did, and frankly we don’t care. When it is just on a black screen, I can notice an ever so slight red tint to the black screen. Additionally if I shift my eyes rapidly I can see the ‘rainbow effect’ I’ve red about with DLP projectors such as this. But not noticeable for any of us watching regularly. I don’t believe this one has quite as depth of color as the Epson, and no doubt if I was to spend about 4x as much on a 3LCD Epson 4K projector the picture would likely be much better. However, for under $600 I believe this is a solid choice and am completely satisfied with the overall product. No-frills, but bright, with a sharp 1080p picture, quiet and easy operation, this one does the job just fine.

Really great projector with one flaw.

This projector is the latest upgrade to my home theater. The picture is razor sharp if you are streaming 4k or at least 1080p. the color is really good. It’s fairly quiet. We watch movie while sitting about 6ft below it. The fan cuts on and off for cooling. It is not distracting like my previous projector (Wimus brand. Not bad but loud and picture not near as good). The HD146X takes about 15 to 20 seconds to warm up when first turned on. No problem there. I’m very happy with the performance. I have it paired with a Klipsch 7.2 surround sound system. Movies with this combo are amazing. I also play COD (xbox) on this projector. All I can say is WHOA!! fast response. Excellent refresh rate. Love it. There are a couple of things that I wish were better but were not deal breakers for me. 1) the projector has to be mounted to align with the center of the screen. In my case I had a ceiling fan there but ended up replacing the low hanging fan with a flush mounted base fan that positioned the fan closer to ceiling. After mounting the projector with an extension arm to lower it, I was able to put the projector in the center of the room. 2) This issue was a bigger problem than the centering. The mount. Apparently a typical universal mount doesn’t work with this projector. Optoma has a proprietary mount that must be ordered from them specifically for this line of projector. I was infuriated by this. I already had a mount from my previous projector. I didn’t need a new one. I had to take the mount I had down to my shop to grind, cut and drill for my universal mount to work. Most people won’t have the resources for this. I barely did. It was way more work than I should have to do. The Optoma mounts are expensive and take forever to get. Consider these things before you buy. If you have a drill and the correct size mount screws, you can make a universal mount work. I’m very particular so I didn’t like having a home machined mount. Bottom line. Great projector, terrible mount configuration.

    Works well for gaming

I bought this primarily for gaming on a PlayStation 5, so a low response time was key for me. With gaming mode turned on, it has a respectable response time- good enough for about 99% of all gamers out there. It does come at a hot to color accuracy and fidelity however, but it’s easy enough to switch off and on.Compared to other projectors I’ve owned, it’s not a phenomenal value of you only intend to watch standard media. So if only recommend this if you intend to game on it, otherwise there are better options for the price (albeit not by much).

Not bad, but could be much better

I’ve had mixed emotions about this projector. When it arrived the Amazon box looked fine but the projector box itself was pretty damaged. There was enough padding inside the box that I don’t think it made any difference. When I connected the projector it displayed a much smaller image than I was expecting based on the throw ratio listed. While using the zoom feature I noted that it was good at shrinking the image however it wouldn’t enlarge the size of the projection but rather just zoom in on one part of the image. The projector does not create an image that is centered at the height of the projector. The bottom of the projection is at the same height as the projector. This resulted in half the image on the wall and half on the ceiling. In order to get the correct image and size I had to completely rearrange my basement and ceiling mount the projector.Once I got through all that things got better. Originally it was convinient to have the projector off center, however there is no horizontal keystone correction. So I had to rearrange the basement again. The projector does have a useful zoom provided you are trying to shrink the image. It also has a vertical and horizontal image shift which was very useful. The up and downside to that is each source has its own setting so you end up setting it up once for the blu ray player and once for the roku, and once for the Xbox. The good is it will have different settings for each input. The other downside is anytime you change the input or change from the previews on a blu ray to the main menu you have to wait while the projector detects what the source is and reloads the settings. Very annoying and unnecessary. It does have built in test patterns for screen calibration, which us nice. The remote lights up well. The strange thing is the on and off buttons are not the same button. I also can’t seem to find a remote code for the projector so I cant use a universal remote. Additionally the remote has keys which don’t do anything. My unit also seems very picky about the remote angle relative to the unit. The image itself is nice and sharp. At night it looks great but it suffers a lot in a room with light. This is a problem with all projectors I know. I expected it to be a bit brighter. The brightness difference between vivid and eco mode isnt very noticable, however the difference in fan noise is very noticeable. Speaking of noise, when the projector starts up it emits a high pitch squeek for several minutes. Not real loud, but annoying until your show starts playing sound. The biggest issue was that after about 1 month of use the projector lamp died. Called optoma and they said to try Amazon first and if that didnt work they would step in. Hooray to Amazon. Even though I was a few days outside the 30 day return window they processed a very fast replacement. Not sure if this was related to the damaged box or not.I love the big screen but it has come with waaaayyyy more baggage than I was expecting. Fortunately I was able to rearrange my basement othwmerwise I would have been really unhappy. If I had to do it all over again I don’t know if I would do it again honestly. Maybe my opinion will change after years or reliable use.
