Solid amplifier with great sound, picture and cslibration

This amplifier replaced my old TX NR 686 made by Onkyo. It was a great way to upgrade my sound system. I added two more in ceiling speakers so that I now have 5-1-4 sound set up that allows me to do IMAX sound. After doing the calibration with dirac live the sound is absolutely amazing and when we are watching a movie it sounds just like being in the theater. The built-in Wi-Fi works great. The net applications are very easy to use with the app. I highly recommend this amp. Onkyo came through with a great product.

    Good product bad service

The receiver was great for about six months then the remote only works when it wants to and the receiver randomly cuts off. I’ve tried updating it but it makes it worse. Customer service will not respond. I just wish there was a solution.

    Great Receiver for the price

Outputs amazing video and audio. With the Klipsch Reference Cinema Dolby Atmos 5.1.4 System and the use of DIRAC, the sound output is Theater quality in a small room. I could not be happier.

    Lots of goodies

This receiver has 9.2 channels of fun with different speaker configurations, there’s Dolby Atmos, Bluetooth, 4k picture quality, Hi resolution Audio there’s many options To go through on setup to calibrate or comes with a mic to autosetup, has a good clean sound to it with advertised 220 watts per channel. The screen on the front reciever is a greenish tint so kinda looks dated for the money they could have used white led. Happy with purchase so far

The video went blacked out periodically, and I could not figure out the correct setting. I wanted to return it, but I missed the return window period.

Doesn’t play ARC in Zone 2

I bought this receiver for it’s ability to drive 9.1 speakers. I have my LR setup as 5.1.2 + 2 speakers in zone2 (the dining room). After struggling with Dirac Live, I must admit the sound in the LR was quite good. But I couldn’t get sound in zone 2. After a short wait with Onkyo support I got a straight simple answer. None of their receivers play ARC in zone 2. 95% of what I listen to comes from my TV, and it’s too far away to run an optical cable to the receiver. I’m quite disappointed. Thumbs up to straight talking Onkyo support and Amazon’s easy returns.

Could not get reliable sync to TV at 8k60 or 4k120

I have a TV capable of 8k@60hz and 4k@120hz and I thought this would be a good AVR to pair with it to be future-proof. Unfortunately, I could not get this receiver to consistently pass through 8k (receiver’s upscaling) or 4k120 (Xbox Series X) signals to my TV. Most of the time the receiver and TV would think they were synced properly but the TV would only show a black screen (though sound would work). According to the TV everything was fine at the correct resolution and refresh rate but no picture. Plugging my Xbox directly into my TV works fine and I tried 6 different certified HDMI 2.1 cables. The seller gave me helpful troubleshooting suggestions but we couldn’t get it to work consistently. The 9 channel amp and HDMI 2.1 support are why I bought this receiver at its high price. Without proper, reliably working HDMI 2.1 support this receiver is not worth this price so I had to return. There were problems with HDMI 2.1 support in receivers built in 2020 but those problems were supposed to be a thing of the past this year. Unfortunately it looks like problems still remain in 2021. (Unless my unit is just defective.)

    DIRAC + UMIK1 = Fantastic Results

Movies and Music sound fantastic on this device after running DIRAC. Excellent value with DIRAC built in and no need to pay extra for a license unlike Denon/Marantz. Definitely get a UMIK1 and a Microphone stand to get the most out of the calibration. Receiver also runs cool and quiet. I really like the 3 year warranty versus the 2 year on the lesser models. Hopefully this lasts me a long time and I see no need to upgrade for many years.

    Awesome receiver

I needed an upgrade. My previous Onkyo receiver I had for 20 years, still sounds great. I only bought to upgrade to HDMI. I’m glad I did as picture quality and sound are fantastic. My only complaint is setup is a tad frustrating

The basic set-up is relatively easy which was a big plus for me……

First let me start off by saying that I am not an audiophile. So, this review will not get into the weeds of the more complex settings this receiver is capable of. For example, the Dirac room measuring option. No way was I attempting to mess with that. Especially, after reading that some reviewers who actually have experience with Dirac found it could be confusing/difficult to set up. Besides I come from a previous Onkyo the TX-SR607 which had the AccuEQ Room Calibration similar to this receiver, so I used that instead with no issues. As far as hooking up the speakers it’s pretty straight forward. If you have banana plugs, use them, seriously. I originally planned on using banana plugs but in order to save time I decided against that. But I wish I had taken the extra time to go with bananas because trying to thread the speaker wire into the speaker terminals is tedious, there not much room between the terminals and even me with my skinny fingers struggled a bit. Wish Onkyo designed their terminals side by side, but I think only Denon does that. Anyway, after all the speakers were connected (I’m currently using a 5.1.2 setup) and I connected my tv, Blu-ray player, CD player, etc., etc., I ran the AccuEQ Room Calibration, and I was good to go. I did change the some of the settings like speaker volume that AccuEQ has set but nothing major. I have noticed that I need to turn the volume up much higher on this Onkyo than on my previous one. What I mean by that is that on my previous Onkyo I would set the volume indicator at around 30-35 tops for movies. With this one it’s more like 40-45, maybe how the volume is measured is different on this one. The sound is excellent for movies and music I have no complaints there. I have only tried a few of features so far like Airplay but will dig deeper into the manual (I downloaded from the internet) as time goes by. I will say as far as build quality is concerned it’s not bad, but IMO my old Onkyo, a 2009 model, had the look and feel of a more expensive receiver. But it’s what’s inside that matters most so hopefully this one last as long as my previous Onkyo.

    It’s an onkyo

Can’t say much other then it’s classic Onkyo. Hit the power button and it works. Sound is good for an av receiver miles above entry level like sound bars.Lots of features but most annoying is fast HDMI switching isn’t working all the time. It dislikes Vizio tvs with arc so if your using that combo set the audio output to bitstream and ignore arc.

    Buyer Beware

Yes,I bought this stereo and some things you need to know.1st the manual:It does not come with it,instead its only online, which does nothing should your system be part of the entertainment system. Also, the company believes they can abbreviate everything and,of course, you would have no problem with figuring it out.Add to this, the manual is written as if you went to 4 years of college to learn thier manual. To end my experience with it,there is no glossy,or anything such, that explains the techno-ramblings,nothing about cable tv/internet hookup besides”plug goes here”and if you cant go online because your online depends on this working, then prepare to be on hands and knees, four hours,on the phone getting help for your picture to show up and the multiple times downloading the upgrade to the system that seemingly doesnt want to use it,try try again.By the way, have NEVER seen a system thats seems designed NOT to do even the basics. The Denon it replaced, didnt fight you on everything.2nd)Heres the kicker,Im handicapped and been made to crawl around the floor for hours, trying to get the reciever to do just the basics. This stuff should be no-brainer plug and play, with delving deeper into the options to be more complicated,it seems designed to force paying thier professionals to do it for you.Im not an idiot, have done hookups many times before, this seems designed for you to fail, heres why, figure this one out,and if you know, please tell me:I have the virus known as Comcast(Xfinity)cable company for my internet/cable Tv.I use thier equipment including the box,2 voice remotes and a universal remote, all of which worked fine til the Onkyo TX-NR7100 and now every single remote works,”Only when the system feels like it”which is usually a couple hours in the morning and occasionally other times and moves at a snails pace even then. And guess what 3 tries with customer service gets you on this problem:1st guy just hangs up on you after asking, too much trouble it seems,2nd guy says call back in 3 days if it still doesnt work, awesome help indeed,3rd guy has a great solution before hanging up”Change batteries in remote!’ Such awesome, and wise help, you think? So in all honesty,I cant even rate half of a $1000 reciever that simply doesnt work with cable tv remotes literally turning them, thier signals off, which makes 0 sense why the Onkyo is stopping signals from working on a cable box?Oh,and only recognizes HDMI 3,by the way.So now Im stuck with a”everything entertainment”stereo reciever that works fine with a Xbox series X,a 65″ LG 4K 3D tv and a Samsung 4K 3D DVD player, but for whatever reason(and company doesnt know, doesnt care and refuses by internet or by phone call to help figure this out)simply refuses to play nice with my cable box by either rarely working and at a snails pace when it does,or simply stopping the reception to the cable box by any type of remotes being used or willing to accept the new signals from the cable box…..In closing Im handicapped person forced to fight hours with a system which should be plug it in and set the reciever to item being used–to being sent to my bedroom to watch the channel/show I want to watch but reciever refuses to display–to basically being treated as an idiot because the companies customer service believes changing batteries,or outright hanging up on you, will fix the problem!

    Huge improvement over TX-RZ800

This replaced TX-RZ800 (purchased in 2017) as it was struggling with HDMI 4K content (it would reset). Did some research for replacement (always been Onkyo fan for their performance value) and settled on the TX-NR7100. The sound stage came alive (used the AccuEQ as I did not have Onkyo App) and even pictures (Sony XBR-75X940D).After installing Onkyo App, listened to Amazon Music, Spotify, Sirius, and Pandora. Again, much improved sound and imaging. Amazon Music sounded the best. Don’t need the remote with the App.Highly recommended!

this receiver is a mixed bag…it certainly is not as heavy duty AMP wise as my 2010 nor my 1993 Onkyo AV receivers.it seems to need more on the level to get the same loudnessThe Surround sound is good. the auto speaker volume set up works but wasnt how i like it so i had to correct a few levels.is it perfect, NO, for the sale price $$ spent it was a good value

WOW! Best 9 channel AVR for the money, period.

I couldn’t afford, nor did I have the room for an 11 channel receiver setup. Onkyo has been making the best value AVRs for the last 30+ years. Only if it was 120 or more watts per channel for music or with 11 or 13 channels for movies could it be improved. Fantastic AVR with all of the features and sound for the 5.2.4 theater setup! Would have cost a lot more for other equal brands with these features and performance. Purchased the best valued 9 channel AVR on a Black Friday sale that is currently sold. Couldn’t be more satisfied! WOW!

Works Great… But You Might Have To Factory Reset DAILY!!!

I originally bought one of these refurbished direct from Onkyo about a year ago when AVRs were selling at an all time high (thanks COVID!). I had it connected in my living room until I realize there were no preouts and wouldn’t work with an AMP, so when then RZ50 came back in stock I bought one of those, and I has been working great in my living room ever since.Anyway, during that time, I would completely loose sound when turning it on… you have to do a factory reset in order to get sound back again. I have done this maybe 10 times in the past year… it’s very annoying, but since I waited too long to return it to Onkyo I was stuck with it.When I saw these were on sale new for $700, I went ahead and bought another because I thought I had a lemon and that, for the money… it was a good deal (I spent 1k on my refurb unit). So I hook it up and everything looks fine… the next day I go to my sons room to put him to bed and… sure enough, NO AUDIO AGAIN! Crazy! I did find a work around… streaming audio via AirPlay restored audio… but this is beyond absurd that this is obviously a pretty well known defect with this AVR that has yet to be fixed.Do yourself a favor and spend a little more on the RZ50 if you must have an Onkyo, or if you can find a Denon 6700 for under $1500. I am sending this back but I am still stuck with my original unti that Onkyo won’t fix.

    Solid receiver with few issues

Totally clipless output and great sound. A few issues with EARC and it turns off with no signal regardless of TV state. Unable to adjust time or turn off auto power down. Supports all audio and HD modes. Used all banana plug connections and setup easily. Lots of inputs and outputs and what have you’s. Throws a fair a amount of heat. But that’s just like, my opinion man.

    Great Value/Great Sound

Onkyo for me is a good to go audio always. They are reliable long lasting equipment that offer a lot for less compared to other brands. Sound is strong on my speaker who are not that demanding (Jamo 809 7.2.4) and it has a sweet spot around 55 to 60 volume wise. This is were its output shines with a very rewarding Dolby Atmos sound. I’m sure you can get much more from a more expensive Av receiver but I consider myself an average or higher on the spectrum of sound requirements and this meets or exceeds all my expectations.

When my 7 year old Onkyo TR-NX838 blew out its power supply this weekend (along with a surround speaker and the HDMI connection to my TV), I ordered the TX-NR7100 after first trying the TX-NR6100 which had an issue with one of the surround outputs. The return on the 6100 was easy, and the 7100 arrived right after (both next day deliveries). The 7100 really upped the game in terms of features and viewing. Godzilla shakes the room! I’ll be adding two speakers to complete the 9.1.2 configuration to wring the last bit of Dolby Atmos out of it by Thanskgiving.

    Virtually no support!

We decided it was finally time to upgrade our older Denon AVR-1913. After some research we chose this Onkyo 7100. It sounds great, when it’s working. Unfortunately the back right surround channel scratches, pops and then goes silent after what seems like a somewhat random period of time. Unfortunately, we bought it when we got a good sale price on Amazon, but had to go out of town just after it was delivered, so were unable to install it for a couple weeks, and after that it was a week before we noticed the speaker going out. By the time we realized the problem, it was too late to return it to Amazon. All that said, what we are really upset about is Onkyo’s support. They have no live chat or phone support. NONE. A modern AVR is a complicated set up, and expensive, some form a live support is a MUST. We’ve contacted Onkyo via email, and they are responding, but it’s a slow tedious task of them sending one more test they want done, and so far no offer to replace it. The first thing they wanted of course was for us to factory reset the entire system. The thing is, we tested everything we could think of before we even wrote them. Cutting and installing new wires, swapping back left and right speakers, swapping back left and right speaker wires. Everything came to the same conclusion, there is an issue with the back right channel. We are still waiting to hear back from them after the factory reset. Maybe they will replace it, frankly, we just want to return it, but in the end, we just want a working AVR.1 star for having no live support, and slow unresponsive email support.Update: They asked for our Amazon receipt, which we provided, and then responded:”If your device is under warranty, please send a copy of the purchase receipt for verification. If you’re unable to provide a copy of the purchase receipt or you are no longer covered under the warranty umbrella, you will be responsible for the cost of the repair as well as the shipping costs. “AND then… provided zero information on how to get service other than a list of shops we can send it to for repairs, shipping at our expense. It’s possible they will reimburse return shipping and the repair, but they provide no details on how to set that up. I guess we are suppose to ask the repair shop?

Good quality receiver – with limitations

I was disappointed with the audio equalizer options on this receiver. It has a 16 band equalizer for each set of speakers (front, surround, rear, center & sub woofer – why sub-woofer?!) but you can only use 9 of the bands on each set. In addition, you only get plus or minus 6 dB of volume adjustment for each used band. I spent a week trying to tweak the sound, but I could never get the receiver to sound right in my theater room, so I sent it back. This may not be an issue for others, but if your current receiver’s equalizer is adjusting frequencies by more than 6 dB, this receiver may not be right for you.

    Almost great.

This is a good product, the only thing holding it back is a function some may not use or may not realize why it is acting up. It is an issue with it’s dual zone video output which allows you to send different video outputs to 2 different televisions. If you keep this function “not in use” in the settings it works fine, but if the function is set to “use”, and you only have one tv on, the picture will have random drop of picture for several seconds and keep occurring every 10 or so seconds. There is 2 button remote function to turn off the Zone 2 signal but this doesn’t fix the problem. The only fix is to set the zone 2 to “do not use”, which is deep in the settings menus. I am still very impressed with this receiver but thought people should know it is not without fault.

    Unfortunate audio delay

Wanted to love this. Coming from a Denon 4310ci that finally conked out. Liked the fact that this unit has solid audio performance, enough power to drive my Martin-Logan speakers without breaking a sweat, decent 8k/4k video section, and a couple of legacy analog input jacks.Sadly, the unit is slow in handling audio over HDMI–not just switching inputs, but also even when staying on the same input. Very frustrating to fast forward or skip in a show (streaming or Tivo) and then having to wait 2-3 seconds for the audio to kick back in. Based on some online research, I don’t think it was a defective unit, but rather an unfortunate in-built characteristic.Returned and got a Denon X2800h. Not as good on paper (7.2 ch vs 9.2 ch, 95w vs 100w, one fewer HDMI input, no legacy analog inputs, and cost about 35 bucks more (plus another 30 bucks for a couple of analog-to-HDMI adapters). But at least it works properly (sound is very similar after calibration), including instantaneous audio switching.

    Late and broken

Placed this order on 9/11 and after several delays it finally arrived on 9/29. PLugged it up and was greated by NG:R on the display. no buttons work, only able to power it on and off, no sound. Contacted Onkyo support and they said to exchange it. Great.

HDMI 2.1 and associated features seem to all work well. Dirac live calibration really helped get the most out of my 5.2.2 setup. Hard to find in stock but loving it so far.

First impressions have NOT been good.

The media could not be loaded.

First – there is a known issue with the Dirac Live app that makes using it impossible.I had to use a laptop in order to get it to work and even that crashed several times before it finally uploaded the files to the receiver.Second – and this is a deal breaker for me – the much touted Dolby Atmos simply doesn’t work. Perhaps it’s just my unit but I have absolutely no dialog. None. It’s NOT the center channel as that works fine. There simply is no dialog sound. I’ve gone through EVERY source possible to research the problem to no avail.I’ll try to give Onkyo a call tomorrow and see if they can help – I’m sure they’ll blame it on the brand new Samsung UST projector and Samsung will blame it on the Onkyo. My 10 year old Denon that was 1/3 the price and used audessey for room correction sounded both better AND louder than this $1100.00 boat anchor.I’ll update…

    Great upgrade

I upgraded from tx nr747. Wanted new features like Direc live and 9 channels to have rear height channels. Direc live room correction seems to work well. And atmos sounds better with rear heights. Blue tooth works fine with my iphone play music. 4k pass through from xbox one x works fine. I purchased from onkyo authorized seller on Amazon.

    Great AV receiver.

Replaced an older Onkyo without 2.1 HDMI capability. As always with Onkyo, great sound and control of external devices. Only complaint is that it seems like I have to turn the volume up higher on this model than my last one to achieve the same listening level.

    Error with tower speakers

After 2 long calls with Onkyo and 1 attempted email discussion, it seems that this won’t run my system with the 2 front Klipsch tower speakers. Although the power is well withing tolerance, the receiver starts a High Temp power drop within minutes of turning on. This happened even when Bi-amping the towers. They said my only option was to not use the front speakers, or contact the nearest service center 3 states away to try and fix it.I’ve had many Onkyo receivers and this is the first time I’ve had an issue. If you’re running hid to high end speakers, look elsewhere.

Couldn’t get dirac live to work with Onkyo controller but works with Pioneer remote app

5.1.4 setup, used Accueq for 1st room correction because Dirac live network issues with Onkyo controller app. Pioneer remote app seems to be an identical app and works the same as Onkyo controller except Dirac live room correction works with the Pioneer app.

Chromecast built in feature was broken. Amazon charged $180 restocking fee. Buy elsewhere

The chromecast built in feature was completely dead – device could never be found. Because it was only this feature broken, I did not notice at first. By the time I noticed, Amazon agreed to an exceptional refund. However, they never mentioned there would be a $180 restocking fee. They lied 3 times saying the restocking fee would be refunded, then finally said it wasn’t possible. If I’d been told about that I would have gone through the warranty process with the manufacturer instead

    HDMI handshake issues

This seems like a great deal with lots of features, but discovered it has a flaw with HDMI handshaking, especially when switching to HDR, where the screen blanks with digital snow and must be power cycled to recover. Further research indicates Onkyo notoriously has issues with HDMI, especially with board failure and overheating over time.Sadly I had to return it and spend more to get a more reliable brand/unit.

This unit replaced an Onkyo 7.1 that I had for a good number of years. After installation, I fired this unit up and WOW, what an overwhelming difference. Surround has never been so….surrounding. Easy to adjust, use and great to listen to.

Solid 4K receiver that can handle G-Sync @ 120 Hz, but still quirky with HDMI signal sync.

This receiver does pretty much all I would ask. I got it working with my PC and LG OLED TV using g-sync at 4K and 120Hz, which is what I really wanted. The sound quality is also noticeably better than my previous 4K Onkyo receiver, maybe because of the Dirac Live calibration? Anyway, just like the previous receiver though, it is still quirky with having trouble syncing HDMI signals sometimes, and eARC doesn’t always want to work either, but these seem to be issues with all HDMI receives these days I suppose. Also, it is rather expensive, especially compared to previous models, but I guess that just may be the way things are now.

I upgraded to the RX 50 and regret it. Never had issues with the 7100. Didn’t need the preamp output, just wanted the extra 20W/ channel. Looking back I should have just kept the 7100.

    DO NOT BUY!!!

After just 3 months, one of the channels became scratchy sounding. After trying everything it was discovered that the receiver was the problem. It was still under warranty so we contacted them. They wanted us to pay for shipping to one of their repair shops. They were also no help and I found them to have an attitude of “what are you gonna do about it” type of response. So I contacted one of their repair shops through email. The repair shop sent back an email saying that if we don’t pack it correctly when shipping it they will charge us another 178 dollars to “repack it” and you know no matter how well you pack it they are gonna repack it. After all this I am just gonna let the channel be blown for now and then buy another receiver from a reputable company. STAY CLEAR OF ONKYO. Buying their product is like flushing your money.

Pretty good deal but interface / setup is a little buggy

Has a nice feature set. It does the job and sounds good. However, you can tell the software/firmware is a little buggy. After I got it, it took three times to update the firmware successfully. Even after that, I had to trial-and-error several times to get the Wi-Fi settings to stick. And had to do a factory reset at least once when the Google Chromecast and Amazon Alexa setup failed to complete. Hopefully, they’ll keep iterating on their firmware to fix these bugs.
