    Amazing sound…horrible speaker connection

First, the sound is amazing and the styling is great. However, it constantly cut out. I am an engineer that used to work on wireless testing and devices. I shut off all of my wireless devices, moved the router to the opposite side of the house. (The router was only being used by the Roku in my test case…because I didn’t have a 100 ft ethernet cord.) The speakers were all within 15 ft of each other in line of sight with each other and the box. Firmware fully updated and it still would cut out every few minutes no matter how many times I reran the RF channel optimizer. If I am going to spend this much money on a stereo…it should work.

My front right speaker keeps dropping. It’s not what I expect for 2K. Good otherwise.

Convenient placement of wireless speakers with auto balance. Great sound quality.

Wireless Speakers can be located unsymmetrical with Sony’s auto balance system. Surround sound works great with total immersion.

    Great Atmos, but that’s it.

Probably the best and easiest solution for true Dolby Atmos, but that’s it. It absolutely requires a subwoofer which significantly increases the cost. Without a dedicated center channel, which is the most important, it’s just ok. Great surround and Atmos, but for most TV shows, videos, streaming content there is none. It’s an expensive set for occasional movies only. TV viewing is just plain awkward and pretty bad without a center channel.

    Not worth the money

At least in my space didnt work. The sound immersion people talk about in reviews was not there. TV room is fairly large 25x18ft with 9 ft ceiling. Bought with the large subwoofer and overall was disappointing for the cost. Returned.

    Bad luck?

One of the speakers would not sync with the control box. The setup would not advance pass the initial page. Sony’s techs were not able to solve the problem by phone. They would not issue a replacement and told me to send it to their repair facility. Sony would not provide an estimate of how long it would take to repair. Sony would not explain why they would not issue a replacement. Since I had already paid for the A9, and it was defective, why not replace it. I returned the A9 to Amazon and they provided a quick refund. I am glad Amazon understands customer service. Thank you Amazon.

Like others I had a speaker that kept cutting out. But overall I found the sound to be thin. Maybe because I don’t have a flat ceiling? Returned.

    Best purchase for Sony TVs

Great build quality.Sounds perfect for movies. The 360 experience and wireless feature is great if you do not want to run wires across the hall. Connects automatically. Has features to customize the projection of the sound based on your seating. Uses eArcGood purchase and would definitely recommend.

Why do you think this is sold out everywhere?

Bought this a couple months back with the SW5 and I must say I am blown away. My dad since I was a kid had a dedicated theater system, so I’ve always wanted to set one up for myself, but what has pulled me away from doing it is the hassle of setting up everything from the wires, the receiver, the calibration of each speaker, etc. The ease of use and setup of the HT-A9 is not only worth the extra $$, but the quality of the surround sound is also something to smile about. You won’t believe that all you’re hearing is just from 4 speakers. This is an awesome alternative for people who wants great immersion from their content, but is not a hardcore home theater enthusiast.

    Wonderful

I’m old school, believing that direct connection is always the best, so I was hesitant to go WiFi. So far I’m impressed. Sony has lead the way again. Sound is exceptional. Simple to install. Looking forward to years of enjoyment.

    Sound is amazing!

Don’t listen to those who are giving bad reviews for these speakers, I have had several Dolby Atmos sound bars and they do not even compare to the sound that HT-A9 produces. Had multiple friends over to watch movies and they were amazed at how good the sound was its as good as going to the theater. The setup is so easy quality of the product is very good no issues so far, I have had them for 6 months now. I did get the 300-watt sub-woofer to go with them you need to have it.

    Not Worth The Cost

I’ve been using this home theater system for 11 months and I have not been very impressed with it. The sound quality is very good when it works. The problem is that the speakers require constant RF re-optimization to maintain sound quality and connections. The speakers loose connection to the head unit easily because it uses the same frequencies and RF channels as other common WiFi devices. It’s like they designed it expecting that there would be no other wireless devices in a person’s home. They should have designed it use a frequency outside of the bands that are commonly used by other devices even if it meant that the speakers had to be in line of sight of the head unit. The next problem that I have experienced is that the head unit will over heat occasionally, which requires shutting it down and letting it cool off. The head unit in my living area is sitting on top of my entertainment center in the open air so there is no reason for it to overheat if it was designed correctly.I would have also liked for it to have more HDMI inputs or for Sony to sell a separate HDMI switch that could integrate with the head unit so it could use the remote.

Sound drops very frequently. Do not buy waste of money

Sound drops very frequently. I have connected it to Sony Bravia A80L TV. Latest TV. But sound drop almost hourly. Tried all solutions provided in manual and by Sony support. Still sound drops. You can’t watch a full movie uninterrupted. IT disconnects with TV automatically too. Look at other alternatives. Not happy with the product. Long time Sony loyalist. But I may not buy any Sony products in future.

    What an amazing sound experience

The sound stage on this system is on the same playing field of an Sonos ARC system with 2 play 5’s and 3 Subs. And about $1500 cheaper. Highly recommended for a home that can’t run multiple wires or someone with a compact movie room. No one should be disappointed when purchasing this product.

good product – great sound – plagued by frequent audio dropouts

super excited by this product , sound quality and spaciousness is amazing when it works. But frequent audio dropouts/speaker connectivity issues forced me to return this product. followed all the recommended speaker placement/moved mesh routers away from the receivers/maintained line of sight to the speakers with the box/connected apple tv directly to the box but nothing helped.remote is pretty basic and no backlight functionality.I think Sony gave couple of SW updates but they are not sufficient to fix the connectivity problems. for the price it is not worth it. until sony fixes this problem, i think its better to stay away from this product.

    Easy to setup, awesome sounfield.

So easy to setup and sounfield generated is so much better than my Sonos Arc. But it lacks low end of audio spectrum. Must be augmented by a subwoofer SA-SW3 for smaller room but I would recommend SA SW5 for lower registers of audio. As for music compared to Sonos is almost a tie but I give a little preference to Sonos Arc.

    Future of home theater

Sound quality is impressive although the bass could do more power and definition. A usual trade off with wireless equipment are the signal drop-outs but nothing that can’t be solved with proper placement. The system is better than sound bars for sure and punches above its weight class against traditional home theater setups.

Don’t get a sound bar get this!!

I was very skeptical on this system but I didn’t want to run wires or deal with charging wireless speakers.I had outlets right where the speaker would be placed so that already was worked out.Setup:Easy peasy they setup themselves practicallyAnd linked right away.Ran the calibration and boom welcome to spatial soundSpeakers:Well constructed I don’t mind the color tho some may wish it came in black. They all syncd with no issue. Also I have not experienced any drop outs.Keep in mind having a wireless router near these can cause issues I’d suggest moving it out of the area to another room.Sound:I have to say these thing do as advertised.Sony has always been a top tier brand and this is a reminder why. This witchcraft of audio is truly revolutionary. Now with that said no it’s not going to be as loud as a home theatre but if you dont want to run wires and deal with that nonsense this is for you.I’ve never had to go above 50 it’s plenty loud.As far as configuration my room is odd and have the tv in the corner so the speakers are also at corners and let me tell you it still does the spatial and atmos thing beautifully.I will advise you should get the subwoofer I opted for the sw5 and it shakes the house amazing .Highs and mids are covered very well.Streaming:You can stream to the device (hta9)With Spotify or Amazon music sounds awesomeEspecially if you do some spatial sound musicListening to music is def an experience with the “special effects”Cost:This is expensive yes I got this during a sale subwoofer and hta9 for 1800 which wasn’t bad in hindsight for how the system sounds. Is it worth it over a sound bar. Yes!I’d pick this system over any soundbar.Cons:Pass through of vrr is not supported yetNot really a deal breaker as I would only use arc connection and have hdmi straight to the tv.Overall:Very nice top quality home theatre system.Atmos and spatial sound are awesome.Get it and forget about the money

    Quick to setup, excellent sound

This is the coolest home speaker theatre in a box type solution that I’ve seen to date. We didn’t have a lot of room in our living room for an audio system. We also don’t have any wiring for surround sound so I wanted to go with a wireless option. First off, I highly recommend also buying the SW5 sub-woofer for these. You really need that low end to round out the sound. Setup was super simple, I just plugged everything in including the sub then attached the little controller box that comes with these to the tv via the HDMI ARC port and powered it on. All of the speakers including the sub connected automatically which was great. While I was testing these I noticed speakers occasionally losing their connection and dropping out like some people have mentioned in other reviews. There was a little note that came with the speakers which mentioned going to Speaker Settings -> Wireless Speaker Settings -> Wireless Playback Quality and changing from “Sound Quality” to “Connection”. After doing that I had no drop-offs at all and the quality of the sound wasn’t reduced by any noticeable degree, it still sounds amazing. I also found that I had to reposition a couple of the speakers by a few inches to improve their reception, but other than that it all worked great. Once you have the speakers positioned the way you want them you just run through the automated sound calibration (make sure the room is quiet while doing this) and then you’re ready to go. The phantom center speaker does work suprisingly well, however I’ve been using my 77″ Sony A80J TV as the center speaker. If you’re looking for the absolute best out of the box home audio experience for your tv and you’re willing to spend the money I highly recommend these.

    Need the 300w Subwoofer

The speaker system is flat and unappealing without the big subwoofer which needs to be even bigger. Don’t waste money on the smaller 200w subwoofer and don’t buy the refurbished woofer. They link and setup very easy. Make sure the Sony TV has the EARC volume turned up 100%. Took a while to figure that out. The system would play Bluetooth music and DVD but no TV sound. The speakers cannot be to close 36” or more apart and not angled at close distances. The area above the speakers needs to be open and not in a corner or against a wall as it has to bounce the sound. It does sound like a larger system. It will not go extremely loud. It can get fairly loud, but if you want to hear and feel like you are next to a rocket launch or airplane takeoff I suggest a different system with a 1,000watts as the 300w subwoofer not included and the 7# speaker are not strong enough. If you like normal listening music and normal romantic movies or a thriller, this will work well. It has not astounded me but the system simplicity and ease of use works well. The power cord for the speakers are crazy short like 5 feet, I had to buy 10 footers right away to get to an outlet. Although wireless, there is a power cord hanging down the wall on each speaker unless you hide them some way. I suggest a speaker stand with a cable management system. The Bluetooth works really well and once setup, you can forget needing to touch it again. It turns on flawlessly with my Sony XR- 55A80J and adjust the sound with the TV remote. Recommend Sony everything (Blu-ray, DVD, Play Station, TV) so only one remote is needed and not 4 or five. Is it worth the expense, I would say not unless you can get it on sale. Do not get refurbished, we tried that and the product was broken and terrible, it appears all they do to refurbished is make sure it turns on (powers up). Best of luck to you.

Wireless Sound with a hefty price tag

Convenient wireless surround sound that is easy to setup and has special setup if you are connecting to a Sony Bravia XR system. Fairly easy setup, price does not include a subwoofer but manageable. Just follow the setup on screen and you will have a great sounding system in less than 1 hour.

Love, hate, love, hate, love, hate

I have gone back and forth several times on my feelings on this system. When I first took it out of the box, I felt like it was the best sound that I have ever heard from a surround system. It was super simple to set up. Then I played with it a bit and felt like it lacked bass.l, even with the SW5 sub. Then it started having little connection issues and dropping out for a fraction of a second or worse stuttering for multiple seconds. Plus, I felt like it just wouldn’t get loud enough.I was ready to take it back but then I read some other reviews and watched some YouTube videos with people singing this system’s praises. Still, I had the order queued up for return and was going to do it today, but then I called Sony because a full surround sound system would take up much more room and be way more complicated to set up and based on the reviews, it would cost at least as much or a lot more for similar sound quality. The help desk told me to try putting my sub in the corner. Holy crap, what a difference. Literally moving the sun 3 feet further away and putting in a corner is a whole different world. Probably 3X or more bass feeling. Then I moved it to another corner and faced the front directly toward the side of the couch. That felt like it 2-3Xed the bass again!I played with some more settings and now it’s got all the bass and volume I need and then some. No, it’s not as loud as a traditional system, but definitely enough for a small to mid-sized room.I’m still having connection issues throug. I did all of the recommended troubleshooting things, including moving my mesh node to another room, but I still get sound skips.I have to say that this system holds it’s own against systems that cost twice as much, and absolutely crushes some of them. The skips completely throw me out of the immersion though and ruin the experience. If Sony figures out how to fix the connection with software, I would 100% recommend the system. Until then, I would advise you to pass. Also, I don’t advise buying it with the potential of returning it. It sounds too good and you might end up as torn as I am.

Great sound, but only when it actually works.

YMMV – After about a week of ownership, I’ve decided to return the unit. The sound experience was amazing!!… but the constant speaker connectivity issues, poor software controls, and poor customer support options are all a bit too frustrating for this price range. This “out of the box” system required A LOT of troubleshooting, settings tuning, hard resets, continual re-optimization, RF Channel changes, etc… all while dealing with highly sensitive line-of sight issues. It’s also wild to me that the Sony | Music Center app (2.5 stars on iOS) has had over 3 years of unanswered requests & complaints — and is the “companion” for this $2500 system. My most recent (and now recurring) issue is that all 4 towers and SW5 sub will randomly lose connection to the receiver box and will not reconnect aside from going through an entire hard reset process with the box and speakers. If I attempt to use RF Channel On/Off to force a reconnect/optimization – the software locks up and I have to cycle the power of the unit (holding the power button on the receiver for 10 seconds doesn’t work in the scenario). After attempting to be escalated to different supervisors at Sony, all of them parrot the same process of needing to send the unit to Sony and wait up to 3 weeks for repair/return. Engaging warranty repairs under 7 days of ownership is silly from my POV, so I asked for…A new, priority shipped replacement unit — but was denied.I then requested a new unit in the interim so I could test with my system at home & make sure it wasn’t a combination of my speakers + the receiver — denied.I then asked for an already repaired, non-new unit to be shipped so I could test/use my system over the next month — denied.Lastly, I asked to speak to a different department or escalate further — but it seems I arrived at the last line of defense as the employee assured me that no one “higher” at Sony talks on the phone. (This was my 4th call into Sony over the past 4 days).^ these types of experiences really make me appreciate shopping at companies that actually care about customer support and feedback.Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to love the system & sound for its design, wireless connectivity, and ease of setup — the compounding issues with all of the other concerns (and low ratings) for the HT-A9 gives me low confidence in long term ownership.I hope others here find the product to work well without the need to constantly troubleshoot and can enjoy the amazing sound stage it creates!!

    Wireless Interference is Weak Link

WARNINGIf you live in an apartment, condo or anywhere else there might be significant radio frequency (RF) traffic from neighbors, cell towers, etc. your Sony HT-A9 may be plagued with unpredictable audio dropouts that ruin this otherwise excellent system. Basically ZERO (0) stars in this case.HOPEIf you don’t live close to others (suburbia, rural or in a faraday cage), and know how to limit your own WiFi to channels that won’t conflict with the HT-A9, you might have found a wonderfully simple Atmos surround system that will bring you joy. When mine was working I loved it. Four (4) or Five (5) stars in this case.REVIEWMy reality is the first one; a dense urban area with WiFi neighbors and cell towers. All together this RF interference would lead to speakers occasionally losing connection with the base station and the audio dropping out. Some days we could watch 6+ hours of content via Apple TV 4K with no problems, all while using 3-5 different streaming Apps (i.e. Netflix, Hulu, HBOMax) and many different audio formats. Other days the HT-A9 would drop the audio for a fraction of second 5 or 6 times an hour. On the worst days the quick drops could happen 10-20 times an hour and then larger 1-2 second drops for a few times as well. The first few weeks you’ll want to tolerate these drop-outs, while spend hours online troubleshooting because this system sounds great. At some point you will probably hate that an expensive system can fail so often because of RF interference (that other brands handle much better).BACKGROUNDYou can read all about these issues on “avsforum” on a thread named “Sony HT-A9 Home Theater System”. It has 243 pages as of today. There is a lot of advice there, but my troubleshooting summary after trying essentially everything is that the amount of local RF interference will be the only thing that really matters. If there is a lot of RF traffic near you then your system (with all the latest firmware) will try to cope, but will likely fail often enough to frustrate you. Keep in mind a new neighbor or some other RF source could show up at any time – and this system does not seem robust enough to cope well. Others have stated, and I agree, that Sony have a gem here, but need to make their wireless technology more robust to make this a stable mass-market product. I patiently tried all the advice online and after almost a month of this decided the HT-A9 is not ready for busy RF environments like where I live. I opted for the HT-A7000 sound bar (with satellites) which doesn’t sound as great, but the main bar never drops audio. If you live more remotely the HT-A9 is an amazing system that I think you’ll love.

    Amazing

Upgraded my fairly new Bose 900 with Omni Jewels and 700 series base module. This HT-A9 with SW5 is amazing. But you have to get the settings right. My current settings are Cinema, advanced auto volume on, sound mode set to DTS Neural X and DRC set to auto. Base on SW5 level 3-4 and rear speakers maxed volume. This has been the best surround sound settings I have used and I used a Dolby Atmos demo disc to help me make my decision on what sounded best. My ceilings are vaulted in from by my front speakers and lower by my rear speakers still sounds amazing. 20foot ceiling in front and about 8foot ceiling in rear. I have a massive living room and it still sounds great. Highly recommend. Have no issues with drop outs and I have it right next to my mesh router. Wish they update the system with more settings to control the EQ of the system. If Sony does a little more updates to sweeten this system up just a little, man this system with sub is hard to beat. I do however like the base on my Bose 700 sub just a little better than the SW5 but the system in whole is highly recommend if you can get it. Had my system for about 2 months and I love it.

    Some amazing sound. Simple setup.

Just plugging in the powered speakers .makes setup easy. I have had very reliable connections to the speakers from the co trol unit. The sound is really good – if you buy the sub. The sound could be a lot better with a center channel – the virtual center is acceptable but it could be soooooo much better. Why not have an optional center like the sub ?I have a Bravia TV. Using that center is meh …

Review from a user who owns the Sonos 5.1 (Arc + Sub + 2x One) system

I bought the Sony HT-A9 to replace my Sonos 5.1 system (Arc + Sub 2x One). During my comparison, I turned off the Sonos Sub as I don’t have it the Sony Sub to compare it with. The HT-A9 was touted as to have a great 360 immersive experience for watching Dolby Atmos content. My living room is a 20′ ceiling so I wondered if the HT-A9 would provide a better immersive experience than the Sonos system. And indeed, the HT-A9 really gives me that. On the Sonos, I would have to crank up high to hear it to some degree but it’s also not as immersive where I can sometimes tell the effects are coming from either the left or right surround speakers. While the HT-A9 speakers are smaller than most bookshelf speakers, I still think that the Sonos Arc aesthetically looks, and seems to blend in, better in a living room (non-theater room) setup. The HT-A9 speakers next to my 65-inch TV seems big. I also don’t have a cabinet under the TV, so mounting the HT-A9 speakers on the wall can be a bit of an issue. I would have to figure out how to hide the power cable wires. With the Sonos Arc, there are cable management kits that you can use for it.The phantom speaker channel was convincing if I sit somewhere in the middle of the room. If I sit either right or left of my couch, I can definitely start to hear the dialogues on one side. Maybe it’s just me because I’m used to having a dedicated center channel. I think if you have an L-shaped couch where you would sit far towards one side of the room, you will start to hear the dialogue coming from the speaker closest to you. For music listening, this is not an issue — actually I find the soundstage is better. It was a breeze when I first setup the HT-A9. I immediately watched Dune on it. Half-way through the movie, I started to hear some crackling sound from the right-rear speaker. Having watch the movie with the Sonos, I thought that was some sound effect I just never heard before. Apparently, the right-rear speaker was having connectivity issues. After manually linking it, it reconnected without a problem. With the manual linking process though, you would have to press the link button on all four speakers. I finished the movie without having that issue again. The next day, I then played some music to find out that the rear-right speaker disconnected again and so I followed the same steps. Later that day, the same speaker disconnected again. This time, I set the audio quality to Connection priority. I thought that fixed it. Unfortunately, it happen again for the fourth time. It could be that I’m just getting a defective product but this gave me a pause…. if one of these speakers break in the future, how easy is it to get a replacement from Sony? Would they sell any of these speakers individually on Amazon? If I were to setup a new dedicated home theater room with a 5.1.2 or even a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos system but don’t want to run wires behind the wall or put holes on the ceiling, I think the Sony HT-A9 would be a great option. While the dialogue may sound like it’s off-centered when you’re not sitting in middle of the room, the soundstage and immersive experience could compete a full HT 5.1.4 system.I’m returning my purchase because I think I have a defective rear-right speaker or the control unit is defective. I may purchase the HT-A9 again to install it in the basement for a home theater setup but will wait a bit until Sony irons out the kinks either through software upgrades or with newer releases of the product. I will be keeping my Sonos Arc system in the living room.

    Believe the hype

I have read a few of these initial negative reviews, mainly due to unique setup and fine tuning necessary to get everything working in sync. But wow. Once this system has been properly setup, is placed in areas without wireless interference, in a room properly balanced through its automated technology……no words. My entire adult life I have been looking for a simple, affordable (comparatively) sound system that delivered at every frequency with ease. This is it. I have been stunned with its sonic clarity no matter the content, but ATMOS for the first time feels atmospheric with this system, and I have a VERY complicated room with vaulted ceilings, odd angles, a kitchen, and other complexities that must be difficult to solve for.No issue. Once I solved the “cut out” issue by optimizing the frequency through a bit of trial and error I have simply just put Apple Music on, with lossless Dolby Atmos recordings like On the Nature of Daylight by Orchestra of the Swan & Daniele Rosina, turned up the volume, and simply soaked in a sea of beauty. This is not hyperbole. 25 years of searching through a multitude of systems, from Denon to Bose to Samsung, to Harmon Kardon, to Polk and Klipsch, Definitive Technology and more. This is it. Thank you Sony for such a gift. Well, well done.

    The HT-A9 Delivers!

I was a bit skeptical listening to all the hype and online reviews about the Sony HT-A9 but really wanted a system I could conveniently adjust and move at any time. I unpacked and set up the system following the instructions and had no problems. I also purchased the Sony SW5 sub to go with it. I got everything linked and worked flawlessly. I pair this with my Samsung LSP7T projector and it supported Dolby Atmos right out of the box. I have an upgraded Netflix account that plays the content in UHD/HD/ATMOS. I started up some Atmos-supported movies and was catapulted right into the action! The HT-A9 does deliver!FYI: For those needing information about stands, I recommend the Mounting Dream Speaker Stands sold on Amazon. They adjust and fit perfectly. You may need to get mounting screws but I just used the mounting bracket which worked flawlessly.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PXWXSRY?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

    What an amazing experience

I moved from Nakamichi 9.2.4 to this system. The initial setup took a little while and I did faced audio dropouts occasionally, but after the firmware update it worked perfectly.A far more superior system than Nakamichi in all aspects. Indeed makes your room a cinema hall. Watching movies or listening to music has become a charm after the purchase, the sound does moves around you , though the height channels availability varies by the content and room dimensions. I have a big 30 by 30 basement and it fills every corner of it with clear and crisp audio. If you are looking for a hi-fi audio system and dont want to spend extra money in Atmos by doing in wall wiring, this is definitely a recommended alternative

    The dropouts make this unlistenable.

So. I was very excited to say the least. I broke down all the wires from my previous wired system and set up this beast of a system. The sound was amazing! And I initially had no regrets. I paired it with the SW-5 and had completed my home theater system. After about 2 weeks I began to notice intermittent dropouts with the sound. At first it was something I was able to overlook but then it became unbearable and I couldnt make it half hour past Dune on HBO. I tried many attempts at fixing this and troubleshooting the problem. After some research it became apparent that this was an issue that was being experienced across the board with HT-A9 users. I felt defeated inside that I had spent so much of my hard earned money on a system like this that had so much praise to only fall short. At this point I’m going to be looking at what kind of options I will have at getting my money refunded. The wireless system is a great concept but I fear that this day in age there are a lot of factors Sony needs to consider when they realize the kind of home networks that most people have in their living rooms and the interference it will have on these kinds of devices. The photo I included was something they had taped onto the main unit of the system. And honestly, I felt they put this on, on the last minute knowing these systems had these issues and I felt in my gut a bad feeling that I may encounter dropout problems. Sure enough, I did. Good luck.

    Not worth the price

Pros:Strong surround soundEasy setupCons:No equalizerSound is extremely clear – almost painfully sharpThe Sw5 sub is peaky, the low lows are missing, and the high lows are gone. The mid lows are too loud.I experienced some disconnects, which suck, but the sound itself is terrible. It has the ‘sony smile’ which is where they raise the highs, lows, and crush the mids. This results in thin voices, thin music, and loud random bass. Music sounds terrible on these speakers. There’s no congruency in the sound. These sound great when the movie has sound that fits this mix, but it doesn’t sound good in general. They almost remind me of the original beats by Dre headphones. Truly terrible. But, when the movie matches the speakers tone, it did great.I don’t recommend them. Especially for the price. I would pay no more than 500 for this setup.

Outstanding Dolby Atmos speakers but for regular music playback it could be better.

For our living room based projection TV system this speaker system is outstanding when the source audio is Dolby DTS, Cinema or Atmos encoded. The 4 speaker system sounds great. But for regular music playback (such as iTunes) the audio seems flat and lacks fullness and range. Given there is very little in the way of manual adjustment this speaker system is definitely not for the music audiophile audience. As a side not, since the entire system is wireless (for the audio signals) random drops do occur. Even after following Sony’s written instructions to eliminate the drops the issue still occurs randomly. Overall, if you are using this for movies and are considering a high end sound, this is a better choice.

Wifi router messed up my connectivity

I bought these speakers about 6 months ago and was initially riddled with connectivity issues. I paired the system with a sw3 sub since I’m in an apartment.Atmos is absolutely amazing, especially during Andor episode 1 the rain in that scene and thunder coming from the sky was immersive. My initial connectivity issues were caused by my router being within 1.5 meters from the control box. Since the speakers use a combo of wifi and bluetooth I also made sure to plug the control box directly into my router with an ethernet cord. Once done my connectivity issues have not returned!Overall I highly recommend these speakers as when I move it will be super easy to set these up again!

Makes a Great Wireless Apartment HTS

So, here is the bottom line. This is a $2k convenience for a small Home Theater System when connected to a compatible TV. The 4 (or 5) speakers have their own audio amplifier and need to be plugged into a wall outlet. They connect bluetooth (LDAC) to the Control Box and I never heard a single dropout. It works as intended. It sounds pretty good for watching movies. Not so much for streaming music. These will not replace a Hi Fi audio system but that’s the trade off. You either have no wires or a monster AV Receiver with a mess of wire all over the place. You decide.

    This is a good product.

My wife and I used an old Vizio sound bar and I wanted us to get something nice. My wife doesn’t really care about sound quality but I do. I read the reviews about the Sony ht-a9 and I was skeptical about buying this because of the audio cutout complaints by different people.I watched some YouTube reviews and the YouTubers had nice things to say about it, so I went ahead with the purchase along side the sw5 subwoofer.Since we installed it, my wife can’t stop raving about this. She loves it. I was really curious the hear her opinion about, especially because she’s not savvy about audio gadgets. Her approval is more than enough for me…lol.

    Very good spatial performance

For quite a while I have been wanting Atmos/DTS-X speakers for my desk/gaming pc. I have been using my Hifiman Ananda headphones with Atmos and DTS-X for headphones but that isn’t able to work with audio from my Blu Ray rips. I didn’t want to run wiring for a home theater setup and I don’t have the ability to sit far enough away from a soundbar for it to be effective. I was hoping that the HT-A9 would be flexible enough to accommodate this layout. When I initially set it up I went through the sound field optimization and the results were really not good, possibly due to my many monitors getting in the way. Sound was very unbalanced with the front right significantly louder than front left, and rear right significantly louder than rear left. I tried moving stuff off my desk and moved the speakers around but nothing I did could give me even remotely balanced sound. In the end I just reset sound settings and only used the manual sound settings to let it know I’m seated closer to the front speakers and used the rear speaker volume adjustment to manually tune to front rear balance a bit more. I had to make minor adjustments to the front speaker positions to get the phantom center in the right position. The end result is very good. The spatial performance is great, and the height effects are very noticeable even with my steeply vaulted ceiling. The overall volume and bass is certainly good enough for a small room like mine, but I still ended up ordering the SW5 subwoofer and am waiting for it to arrive.

    Amazing concept

I love this system, when it worked. It has immersion like I have never experience in an all in one system. I would highly recommend this system for anyone who lives in a house but not for apartments or condos. Just like so many others, I had way too many dropout issues so I sent it back. I now have a Samsung q990c and it’s good but doesn’t hold a candle to the hta-9. If Sony gets this issue resolved, I’ll gladly purchase another one.

The future of home theater but not there yet.

I have an AV receiver and still wanted to avoid running wires for my surround sound so I gave this a try. After a lot of diligence. I must say, the audio quality is amazing. However, even with the upgraded Sony subwoofer, the low end is quite lacking. Very lacking actually! The calibration process is as easy as it gets. Something that Sony has consistently led on. I really like the style of these units, and outside of some initial dropouts, I really haven’t had any issues with it.However, one of the main deal breakers to me was the fact that it did not possess 120Hz 4K through via its hub. That means that if you were planning on playing any console gaming, you will drastically sacrifice graphical performance for this. Really a shame that they are forcing you to utilize their hub but won’t provide you with the latest technology in it.Something like this is ideal for renters who live in apartments that are lacking wiring and want to take their audio with them as they move around. If you own your place, invest a little bit on the wiring and don’t look back. Wireless technology is getting there, but we are still some years out. Also, have you receivers are now integrating with some of these wireless systems which will make such system obsolete.

I have been using for testing only 4K , Blu-Ray , SACD and CD discs .No streaming , no Bluetooth .I don’t have Sony subwoofer ( because matching silver / grey color is unavailable )I have been using B&W powered subwoofer connected directly to my 4K OPPO 205 and it works fine .360 ° sound is amazing , even old movies with 5.1 audio sounds great .If you have any problem with your sound use manual set up.Manual set up works better for me than auto set up . to set the phantom center speaker and couch ( center , back ) position .What I Like :1 easy set up .2 great sound .3 no wires .What I Don’t Like :1 lack of connection : ( only one HDMI in ) no digital , coaxial ,RCA or mini jack inputs.2 only bass control , no treble control ( all presets – except auto sound , are overdrive with high frequencies.3 no subwoofer included.4 no matching color silver / gray subwoofer available.5 its 21 century , but remote looks like from the 90s.

It needs a big subwoofer or two subwoofers

The speakers sound very clear and crisp. Has great sound for movies. Music with the system is just okay, could definitely be better. The real issue is the bass. I have the large sub S5, and it just isn’t enough. This system should be paired with a 10 inch sub or 12 inch. Or have the ability to connect 2 subs. The bass is underwhelming. I do have a open living room that leads into the kitchen which I believe this system is not built for. For the price it definitely needs more. Still a good system but not a Great one.Update: unfortunately I have to return the Sony system. The connectivity became a large issue over the days, plus the bass not being enough is big for me. I have vaulted ceilings with a large open area to the left of the tv and the Sony system did not do well. The connection problem became a huge issue when I sat in my living room for 40 minutes turning off and on the RF signal so that I could get all 4 speakers to connect correctly. Hopefully Sony’s gen 2 of this system will be better but for now Gen 1 doesn’t work.(Photos of my space are attached)

    Soundbar without center speaker

SONY SAYS WIRELESS. However, you must have six electric outlets all over your room.ONLY ONE HDMI. Next years model will have two or three inputs to get people to replace this next year.CAN’T INCREASE SOUND OF EACH SPEAKER. You notice in Sony add the seating position is the direct center in relation to speaker placement. Should you have three or four viewers some people will have those speakers in their dame ears, and there is no way to raise or lower the volume of right and left speakers.NO SUB PROVIDED. Just add on four to six hundred for your cost.OTHER PROBLEMS. These will depend on room size, and speaker placement.IS IT WORTH THE MONEY. There a lot of nice soundbars out there which are a lot cheaper. This is a nice set. I am now trying to pay it off, but $2500 bucks is a lot more than it looked like before my purchase.

The Best Sounding Home Theater Yet

I wanted a sleek and minimal home theater system with an amazing sound. I toyed with getting a receiver and a basic wired system but didn’t want the footprint or the hassle. However, I don’t love the alternative either…sound bars. Sure, some of them sound good but I wanted something that sounded great and wouldn’t take up my entire living room.Enter the HT-A9 with the SA-SW5. I’ll admit it…I watched the fancy videos and was wooed by the “dome of sound” promise. After unpacking and getting everything plugged in I had the on-screen setup completed in just a couple minutes. The welcome demo had my jaw on the floor. The bass rumbled and the forest sounds filled the air. What a system! I use it with my Apple TV through e-arc and everything works flawlessly. The speakers are positioned out of the way but sounds fills the air when I watch an atmos enabled movie. A few atmos soundtracks that stood out were Dune, Blade Runner 2024, and Alien Resurrection. When it needs to rumble the wireless sub shakes the walls. I actually paused a movie once cause I thought there was a knock at the door only to realize it was just the movie.I’m really satisfied with this system and I hope to enjoy it for many years.

Box arrived open, unit was obviously a return or open box.

Box arrived open, unsealed, not tape or anything. No shipping box either! I’ve received inexpensive items what were double-boxed and padded, but this was neither. Good thing I noticed the delivery truck and was home! Also, despite being told a signature was required, it was not. The driver left this box by the garage and drove off. This unit was obviously a return or open box, not “New” as Amazon listed it.The speakers themselves were easy to set-up, with a Sony TV, and worked fine. Due to short supply, I was unable to audition these in a store before buying, but trusted the glowing reviews…big mistake! The sound OK, not the mind-blowing Atmos experience I expected. Gunshots (for instance) sound clipped, the audio lacks any dynamic range. Maybe I got a dud? I’ll continue to try out different configurations until the return period is up.The power cables are stupid-short, maybe that’s part of the “place anywhere” approach? What color are these things? Off-white-ish? Try matching that, is does not pair visually with any known Sony TV, for sure.I think I could have done so much better, audio-wise, for this kind of money.

    What is happening

I ordered this one month ago. It arrived today and as soon as I finished plugging in the last speaker and turned on the system to calibrate I noticed one of the speakers would not turn on. I clicked the power button on the speaker, I tried using another power cable from another speaker, I tried plugging into a different outlet, I even used a voltage tester to make sure power was going through the wire. This speaker was faulty and did not want to turn on. I called Sony support and the only thing they could offer me was to ship the entire four speaker system for repair and wait another month for it to get fixed. I am extremely disappointed and did not expect this from Sony. I read other reviews about the same experience and thought how could that happen. Guess what it happened to me and it was frustrating. I really look forward to this new technology everyone is raving about it. Unfortunately, the only thing I can do is just return the system. So there you have it I have no idea how good this could’ve been since it didn’t work from day one. Now it’s out of stock and I can see this is the new norm.

Great sound, but constant audio dropouts

Great sounding speaker system. Really feels great hearing sound from all directions but with only 4 speakers. Sound definitely comes strongly from the center even without a center speaker. The very crappy issue I am having, is something I’ve found many people on forums have run into, which is audio dropouts. I regularly get audio dropping out from some of my speakers. Audio will often be coming from the center, but then the right speaker will drop out and I’ll only hear the left speaker. The only way to temporarily fix this is doing the speakers’ RF channel optimization. But this only works for a period of time before happening often again.I’ve gone through all the other tips and tricks people on the forums have given. But there’s no 100% complete solution out there. My system is nowhere near my router, and the control box is not sitting next to any other devices. But even if it was, a speaker control system, should work fine when on an AV rack next to other components.I hope Sony fixes this as they keep marketing the wireless aspect of these speakers, but its definitely the weakest part of the system.

    Dolby Atmos is spectacular!

If you want the latest and greatest soundbar surround sound atmos ever created this is the unit to buy. With that being said this unit is the biggest pain in the ass to setup there optimization for this unit is a software nightmare and Sony useless level 1 and 2 technicians even there own senior level technicians said this item is so new they didn’t get info on how to fix it before Sony released it to market it’s very pathetic how Sony handles flagship products. Currently I’m being escalated to very last department which is engineering to figure out the problem and be careful Amazon delivered it with a dent in 1 of the 4 speakers.

    Excellent sound easy set-up

I was debating between this system and a Bose system. Bose is a little more expensive but this sounds as good as or better than my old Bose lifestyle V35. Set up was super easy and it paired right up with the Sony TV.

    Real theater sound!

Sounds amazing, especially with the subwoofer. It honestly sounds like we’re in a theater. Plus the speakers look nice so I don’t feel like I have to sacrifice the aesthetic of the room for functionality. We’re very happy with the purchase.

    Worth it.

Managed to snag this system when it was still $1800 fantastic sound quality no regrets and I have had no problems with speaker drop out. The speakers base is OK not great so I got the 300w sub and it’s amazing it changes how you experience movies.

    Great sound, terrible connection issues

Amazing sounding speakers that have some serious connection issues. After spending 2.5k on the setup you would expect to be dealing with stutters and disconnects every day. After moving the base station and speakers in every viable configuration I ended up sending these back. I ignored the bad reviews thinking people were just unable to follow the recommended setup but they’re really that bad.
