Almost RX100V Successor… Good video, No Flash, Better Price, but not enough improvement vs. Phones

I’ve been a fan of the RX100 lineup of cameras for many years having owned several, including the RX100 original, III and V. I loved the V but it has seen better days as it has been dropped and scratched up over the years. Shame on me as it is was a great camera. So, when the RX100 VII came out with the same autofocus as the A9, I had to have it. But immediately, I missed the brighter lens of the V (24-70 1.8-2.8) vs. the longer zoom and less bright lens of the VII (24-200 2.8-4.5). Plus, the pricing was getting out of control. This brings the price down to a much more reasonable level, has the same A9 type autofocus and also the same sensor essentially as the RX100 V. But herein lies the problem.RX100 V was launched in 2017 and smartphone cameras have improved by dramatic levels over the past 3 years, while this one simply has not. Don’t get me wrong, it’s the best small camera on the market, the controls are very good, the flip-out screen is a welcome improvement, but I find that I just don’t notice the significant upgrade I used to. On recent trips, I find I use the video and camera of the iPhone 11 Pro Max more than the ZV-1. It’s easier to carry (obviously), always with me and the trade-off isn’t much if anything. 3-years ago, the RX was dramatically better than any phone. One thing I didn’t think I’d miss as much as I did was the pop-up flash on the ZV vs. RX lineup. It’s great for fill-flash for back-lit subjects. The removal of the pop-up viewfinder, on the other hand, was not missed at all.

A Great Offshoot of the RX100 Line

I’ve been meaning to “graduate” from taking videos from either my GoPro or iPhone so I can get more shots with shallow depth of field and just overall better image quality. Thank goodness this exists. Every camera before the ZV-1 were simply still photography cameras first and foremost but also capable of taking videos. The ZV-1 simply emphasized the other half of the equation because the RX100 line already took great videos. The wheel didn’t need to be reinvented here, Sony just acknowledged that there are users of their cameras who use it for videos more than photos. The way this camera was designed, from the button placements and the flippy screen leaves no doubt who this camera is for. This is also a friendly camera for people like me who are just beginning to take videos for travel and other things worth remembering through videos. The great thing is you can grow into this hobby with this camera because of the other features that this camera has that can be discovered while using it.Is it a perfect camera? No camera is. But it’s absolutely perfect for it’s intended use. The price could be a bit lower but considering the features compared to the more expensive RX100 line, this seems to be a bargain.

    Great little camera

This Sony ZV-1 is an amazing little camera! I’m still getting to know all the features, bells, and whistles that it offers, but the footage and photos I have taken so far are super high-quality! I especially love the little dead mouse that fits on the top to cut out wind noise! It really does work very well! Plus, it’s so cute! Anyway, I highly recommend this camera not just for beginners, but for pros as well!

Great camera, but some sound quality issues.

This camera is very good, and I loved the breadth of functionality. The autofocus is by far one of the best I’ve used. The exposure and color are quite good. I only used the video functions – no stills. I am a real stickler for sound quality, and yes, I know to get that, you often have to use an external mic, but that shouldn’t be necessary with this camera, and for me, sometimes, things were pretty good. But too often, I would get low-frequency rumble and noise in the sound for no reason I could determine. And yes, the windscreen was installed at all times. And yes, I can edit out most of the low-freqs with software, but for this much money, I expect consistent sound quality. Perhaps I received a bad unit. I’m considering getting another unit. I rated the touch screen low because it really doesn’t do much, and could/should do much more. Perhaps a firmware update will add some function to that.

Amazing camera for video and pictures – newb review

I’ve had this camera for almost a year now before writing this review. I’ve made some great content for work and im impressed by the video quality and features Sony implemented in this camera. Firmware 2.0 has helped so much more so after using it now for 2-3 weeks. I’m learning videography and photography on my own. I’m brand new to this. Take this as a newb’s take on getting into this space for the first time.Picture quality for what’s supposed to be a vlogging camera is impressive. Firmware 2.0 has really helped make my pictures look beautiful. Video quality on the other hand is out of this world. I love the features to create a bokeh affect in pictures and video as well as the snappy auto focus technology when bringing something close up to the camera and removing it.I’m so happy with this camera. If you’re new to video and photo taking this is a great beginners camera. Its easy to learn and use.

    Great for simple videos

So I was super psyched to get this camera, and it is a robust little thing, but after a few months of usage I’m not totally crazy about it. It’s great for simple vlogs and does that fine. Audio right out of the camera is also just fine. It’s really not great at taking photos. I’ve had issues where it wouldn’t focus very well and the images I would get would just be a little off? Ive found myself not incredibly excited to use it either. I recently took it up on a trip to Maine and I got some absolutely gorgeous looking video, but the photos were subpar. I ended up just using my old dslr and iPhone to take photos throughout most of my trip. Overall, it’s a nifty little device that doesn’t solid 4k with some really great built-in picture profiles. I can’t really say this is good photo camera. It does an okay job. Check out images and videos out there and decide for yourself!

Fantastic price, perfect condition, and more!

I purchased an open box “used” Sony zv-1 from Replay Tech. I NEVER buy used electronics especially without the original packaging but I decided to take a chance in order to save any amount of money. They already had great reviews. It was labeled “used and in very good condition”. I wouldn’t go worse than that. There are zero signs of use. Came out to $600 and the company included two more batteries, along with he charging pack, AND a 128gb memory card. Said it was going to come in a week at first but actually came in three days. So excited to start recording social media content. I was torn between Sony and Canon G7x mark ii for the longest. The fact that this one has a mic attachment automatically outdid the other. Quality is awesome! Just purchased a skin and screen protector to go with it.

See above how this camera outperforms outdoors…astonishingThis ZV-1 sometimes has algorithm technological seizures at the long end of the focal range compared to other Sony zoom cameras. Great point and shoot camera. Very compact usually fits in my front jeans pocket.

Great point and shoot camera works very well and for the money. I picked this because I didn’t need a camera with interchangeable lenses and it’s worked out great. I think eventually once I up my photography skills your feet skills I will buy a better camera camera that has interchangeable lenses lenses but since the lenses cost as much or more than the camera oftentimes this is a great place to start for vlogging And creating content which is the reason I bought it. The really amazing thing is it is so small I can stick it in my front pocket and carry around with me at all times.

So Good Yet SO BAD for YouTubing

This camera is so good when it comes to the quality of videos it captures and infinite battery life when using the USB cable, but the camera is so incredibly bad when it comes to process. All of the below are the many ways the camera screws vloggers and content creators when it comes to file transfer, which is incredibly important:1) The battery and memory card slot are block by the tripod port, so you can’t transfer files without dismounting the camera from the tripod in order to open the memory card slot!? Why would anyone design a camera this way!2) You can’t transfer files without first turning off the camera and plugging in the cord3) You can’t transfer files in PC Remote Function mode … WHY?4) Imaging Edge, Sony’s software for viewing and transfering files doesn’t work on Macbook Pro because it doesn’t recognize that I’m in PC Remote Function mode as it continuously tells me to switch to that mode. Why is this so terrible? How did ya’ll screw us on every conceivable way of transferring files from this camera?I’m so torn on whether to keep this camera despite all those terrible heinous design choices the company made. I’ll probably get to a boiling point and return or sell it. I’m only writing this review because I reached the point of frustration in which I had to say something.

    Great for vlogging and more

My first purchase for a dedicated video camera was a Panasonic Lumix GH5 — a bit over the top for a beginner. The ZV-1 is much easier to use and understand and there are tons of YouTube videos to help you get started. I wish the zoom range was a little wider (18-20mm) but that width may have been hard to do for a compact camera that’s easy to fit just about anywhere. One solution is the Ulanzi wide angle lens — however the adapter is attached with 3M tape and the first one came off in about 2-3 weeks. That lens ships with 4 adhesive “stickers” but when those run out…?Otherwise the Sony ZV-1 is a great product and has a ton of versatility and is easy to learn.

    Amazing Camera for Video

I’ve been an avid Canon DSLR video shooter for years and I have fully converted the majority of my video shooting to the ZV-1. The angles that are achievable with this camera’s zoom lens are perfect for indoor shoots and creating YouTube videos.I thought I would miss having more control over the lenses and was skeptical of the quality I’d get at first, but the quality of the image is arguably better than even some of the best video quality from a 5D with fast lenses on it. I would only recommend using a DSLR or a camera like it if going for incredibly cinematic shots for film production as there’s some things that would be more challenging to create out of the ZV-1.Overall, this camera is incredible and once you get a hang of the picture profiles and color grading workflow with it, it can easily become a primary camera for the majority of your video needs.

    Overhyped At Best

I really wanted to like this camera. First off they sent me a used opened box. When I called they offered me a pretty nice discount however it still never worked properly. The focus is horrible. To be honest it’s like using a glorified web cam. Does not do well in medium to low light and requires a ton of light since the sensor is so small. Hate that I can’t use hdmi with all settings. No way to remotely control camera using HDMI. This was not very well thought out for Youtuber I’m returning.

    Perfect Camera for Content Creators!

I am absolutely in love with my Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera! As a content creator and vlogger, this camera has become an indispensable tool for capturing high-quality videos and photos. The image and video quality is outstanding, with crisp details and vibrant colors that make my content pop.One of the standout features of this camera is the flip screen, which makes it incredibly easy to frame shots and capture perfect selfies or vlog footage. The touchscreen display is intuitive and responsive, adding to the overall user experience.I also appreciate the built-in microphone, which delivers clear and crisp audio, eliminating the need for external microphones in most situations. The defocus setting is another favorite of mine, allowing me to achieve beautiful background blur and professional-looking shots effortlessly. My only minor gripe is that it would have been nice if the camera came with a battery charger instead of just a USB cable for charging. However, this is a small inconvenience compared to the overall quality and performance of the camera. In summary, the Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera is a game-changer for content creators, vloggers, and YouTubers. It delivers exceptional quality, ease of use, and versatility, making it a must-have tool for anyone serious about creating top-notch content. Highly recommended!

Perfect for a new or seasoned vlogger! Dream camera!

This camera packs a punch in its compact size. I use this camera practically every day. My YouTube videos are now so much better than before. I get regular comments about the high quality and questions about what camera I use. I cannot wait to tell them it is the Sony ZV-1 and tell them all about it! The wind guard on the microphone is a special touch I like. Prior to this purchase, I filmed an outdoor video on a slightly breezy day. I was appalled at the quality of that recording sound due to the wind. But with the ZV-1 that is never an issue! One of the things that drew me to the ZV-1 is the flip-out video screen. I wanted a quality camera that I could see the screen on while I am recording. There is nothing worse than recording a video and thinking you are in the frame only to realize you are not. This eliminates that issue all together. It has ports for an external microphone, HDMI, and a micro USB. This allows for a ton of versatility. You can use a micro USB cord to charge the camera or you can buy an optional battery charger. I even bought a couple of backup batteries to keep the footage flowing even on lengthy trips.I paired the ZV-1 with the shooting grip and I will never go back. This baby is super versatile. It lets me click record, snap a picture, zoom in, and more all while keeping the focus on me and not turning the camera around. This allows complete one-handed usage. In addition, it makes a great little on the go tripod too. All of this fits into a small case making it ultra-portable. I love my ZV-1!

    The Quality is STUNNING

I bought this camera on a whim, not knowing if it was the right camera for me to vlog with. But I needn’t have worried because this camera is incredible. It’s tiny, so if that’s an issue for you, then buy a different camera. I love the size, so it’s perfect to me. The quality is BEAUTIFUL, especially in 4K. This camera is not meant for taking photos even though it has that capability. I’m sure there are much better cameras that you can buy if you need to take photos. This cam is for creating videos, the end. However, the photo quality is still good even though its a vlogging camera. It’s just that if the camera isn’t held perfectly still your photos will come out blurred. I would assume that’s because this camera is meant to capture movement.I also love how this camera was made for ease-of-use. As a total amateur I do not find this camera to be overly complicated to figure out. Sure, there are still a lot of functions I don’t know, but that’s okay. There’s time to learn all of those. The downsides? This really isn’t a downside for me, but there’s no actual battery charger that you plug into an outlet. There IS however, a USB cord that you can use to charge the camera, so I’m not sure why people are saying there is no way to charge the battery. The battery itself though is not that great, which is why I subtracted one star. It doesn’t hold a charge for more than a couple of hours, so make sure to order like four back up batteries if you plan to vlog for long periods of time. I already anticipated this and ordered backups ahead of time. I also have the Sony vlogging kit which is having issues pairing with my cam. I’m almost sure its the tripod and NOT the camera. The camera says its paired and the tripod is indicating that it’s not. So who knows. But overall, I love the camera and can’t wait to really start using it to create amazing videos.

Fantastic option to create family memories, vlogging is ok in most situations

Let me start out by saying that I’ve used dozens of cameras over the past few years as a bit of a gear head. I’ve had full frame DSLRs, full frame mirrorless, APS-C options, micro 4/3’s, etc. Most recently I had the Fuji X100V. Having a growing family I realized that while I love taking pictures of my kids growing up, what really captures the interest of everyone is capturing videos. I could take 1,000 pictures from a family trip and the things that the family will want to see is the video, not the pictures. For this I realized that having a more compelling video option was needed. In addition having a 7 year old girl, she’s starting to want to make her own videos, which I post to her private YT channel.Pros- Having a compact option with a decently fast lens. The lens could be wider, it could be longer. There’s a lot of could haves. Why not ask for a 12-500 mm lens? For what it is, it’s a good compromise, has a decent enough range and fast lens, which is needed for a 1″ sensor. The 24-200 would’ve been too slow to shoot indoors without an external light.- The front flip screen. It makes talking head videos easier to shoot, putting it on a tripod and still having a hot/cold shoe for an external mic or a light source is fantastic.- Button layout. Having a record button, having a tally light are great.Cons- I would’ve loved to see a better use of a touch screen interface. Canon has it right for the most part, Sony could be much better.- I would’ve loved to have a mode dial and/or more front dials. But given a choice between what we have in the ZV-1 or a larger body/more expensive model, I’m ok with what we have.Things to noteNo, the stabilization is not the best. On standard it’s not great. On active it’s better but crops in. This is why I say for certain types of vlogging, like on a tripod or talking head video it’s fine. If you’re expecting to walk around and talk to yourself, you’ll want to invest in a gimbal. No, the battery isn’t the best. Luckily they’re tiny and you can find plenty of generic options. No, you don’t get a charger in the box. Most cameras these days are not shipping with one. No you won’t get the ultra thin depth of field from this, it’s a 1″ sensor, there are limitations. For the price, the size, the features, it’s the best option that I’ve found at the present time. It’s not perfect, but any camera enthusiast will tell you that there isn’t. It’s about weighing the positives and the negatives and find the one with the most plusses and the least amount of negatives for your needs. Think about it, if the perfect camera existed, you’d have no compelling reason to upgrade to the next model, so in a way you have to think that manufacturers intentionally withhold a little here and a little there.

    Selling my other cameras

I know that it’s aimed at floggers, but for amateurs who want a small, pocketable camera with a one inch sensor, with excellent fotos and excellent video, this is the camera you will always take with you. I am 75 and too old to carry around my Nikon, Fuji, and Olympus camera and lenses. It is solid and well made. I have small hands, also, so it’s perfect for me. The zoom is a bit slow, you will likely not take fotos of distant birds, nor win photo contests at your local foto club (which is dominated by heavy duty equipment) but it’s absolutely perfect for me. The ZV-1 is also packed with technology. For example, it’s Auto HDR setting alone will transform your pics, providing details lost in shadows, and is an absolute necessity for high contrast, bright sunshine days. It’s ability to turn on when you open the lcd screen is another very useful feature. I could go on and on.

Was a great camera years ago. Now not so much.

For the record I purchased this camera in October 2021. It was my first wheel digital camera outside of a phone. What speaking gets fantastic for up close macro shots for product videos and photography, however, as the other reviewers say, this camera has a very difficult time auto focusing. It’s hit or miss at times. I’ve shot over 8 TB of video since that time and it is infuriating that 20% of the footage is out of focus… the camera just has a very hard time auto focusing. You will have to tap the screen in order to tell it what to focus on which really makes with camera almost a manual focus camera. In contrast, a few months ago I bought a Canon R 50 with a 16 mm lens and a 50 mm lens. Focusing is crisp and sharp. It has no problem auto focusing on pets and it’s extremely fast in terms of focusing… really puts the ZV-1 to shame.Another issue— The ZV-1 picks up scan lines from most LEDs… meaning a few home is normally lit by LED bulbs, which I think most peoples houses are now you will see a lot of scan lines.

So I’m a youtuber, subscribe to my channel Nefetari Enchanted, and a lot of my favorite content creators use this camera and that’s why I picked it. I really do love the video quality. It looks better than real life. But the battery dies for no reason. And the crazy thing is the YouTubes that I watch who use this camera are always complaining about the battery dying when and they just charged it. Like this camera is supposed to be for vlogging so I don’t understand why they wouldn’t ensure that it had a long battery life.

Probably great for YouTubers, which is its intended purpose.

This camera’s video picture quality is pretty great, especially for such a small camera. But it wasn’t good enough to be worth the $750 for me. I’m sure a lot of that $750 is going toward the features designed for YouTubers and content creators. As for me, I just want to take videos of family and friends, and I also want to be able to take great pictures, which is not one of this camera’s strong points. I returned it for a less expensive Canon, which takes better pictures, but it is also designed for a different type of consumer than this particular Sony camera. I think a Vlogger or YouTuber will be pretty happy with this camera, but it just didn’t end up hitting the mark for me.

No Continuous Recording. Internal mic useless. Great picture quality!

Update after getting replacement. It appears nothing was wrong with the first one I sent back.. That’s just how this camera is.The internal mic is no good, AND THERE’S NO CONTINUOUS SHOOTING LIKE THEY CLAIM! The video is broken down into 10 minute files… NOT 1 continuous video file. The audio is defective.. sometimes it doesn’t work and when it does there’s a hissing and strange white noise in the background that pulsates with my voice as I talk. Sounds like ocean waves. Even in a silent room with no wind AND using the dead cat.The picture quality is wonderful! Plus the smooth skin effect makes you look better. ONLY buy for those 2 reasons. What I dislike most are the claims by Sony that this camera is capable of continuous recording without limits. THAT IS NOT ALL THE WAY TRUE. The video is broken down into individual 10 minute video files as you “continuously” record. I contacted support and they said once it reaches 2GB a new file is created.

Great camera not only for vlogging!

I initially bought this camera for my wife since she has a YouTube channel and likes to vlog. However, every once in a while I use it to take pictures and I have to say that (being a Nikon fan all my life), I’m ASTONISHED at three things about this camera: 1. just how good and fast the auto-focus is (makes Nikon, Fuji and Canon look really bad), 2. the quality of the sensor in low light (most if not all cheap cameras take good pics if the setting is well lit but this camera really does a good job in low light) and 3. Just how confusing the menu system is (I’ve heard a lot of people complain about this and it’s true; albeit after a while, you learn where everything is and it’s more or less manageable). Overall a great value for a cam.

    Amazing vlogging camera!

The ZV1 was clearly designed for vloggers.Absolutely impressed by the eye auto focus tracking. Keeping myself in focus has been a challenge at times with people around me, but no more. You can just touch your picture on the touch screen and it will constantly focus on your eye.The background defects button is a nice touch to keep me as the primary focus.A feature I don’t use often, but is pretty amazing is the product showcase. It will quickly change focus to something put in the middle of the frame. I’ve seen a lot of people struggle to focus on an item the put in front of their face, this will fix that. They definitely thought about vlogger challenged by designing a wind screen that comes with the camera. It does a great job reducing wind noise when recording.Vloggers, definitely consider this camera!

I’ve been using this for shooting my 20month daughter for about a month now and I’m delighted with the footage results and how easy to use this device. I’ve set it on the “Intelligent auto” mode (no settings what so ever, the camera just automatically recognizes what its shooting and adjusts for the best results) the whole time and its doing a great job. I especially like the speed the device gets ready to shoot. I just leave it on the dining table all day and whenever my daughter is doing something cute, I grab it and start shooting. It takes literally 2-3 seconds to start up and shooting. Also the auto focus is just amazing, I get beautiful results shooting my constantly moving child.

    Awesome!

This camera is just awesome! It focus very quickly, has image stabilization for video, great for vlogging and the flip out screen is just great! It replaced my old Sony RX100 M4.The only con I’ve found using this camera is in low light. Great for handheld vlogging, but poor bokeh as a webcam replacement

This camera has amazingly fast autofocus and a fantastic F1.8 bokeh effect when using it at 24mm held about a foot away from your face. Unfortunately, if you want to use this as a replacement webcam and have it 2-3′ away from your face, you will need to have it somewhere between 35-60mm and the best f-stop you can get is F2.8, which gives almost no bokeh effect. So if you’re fine with a great webcam without bokeh that is also a really good vlogging and handheld camera, this may be perfect for you! If you’re looking for a really high quality streaming/webcam setup with professional-looking depth of field, you may want to look elsewhere.

I really really wanted to like this camera!

I do bicycle touring videos so I really wanted to like this Camera. It’s compact and easy to film on the fly. I gave it a month and really really tried to learn what this camera could offer. It was so frustrating to go through the menus and settings. I realize all cameras have a learning curve – but I couldn’t even turn on the stabilization for the video while I was on a bike tour. It was only after I got back and studied some youtube videos that I was finally able to turn it on. I wanted it to compliment my GoPro hero 9, but the lens crops so tight – even with stabilization turned off, The camera was almost useless. Also, the zoom is really terrible. I got a fantastic price as I got this on sale, but I still could not justify the purchase if I wasn’t going to use it. Also, The screen is almost impossible to see in sunlight. With polarized sunglasses, you can’t see it at all! Many time’s I was filming totally blind. In the end, I gave up trying to learn this camera and returned it as my return window was closing. I’m probably just going to upgrade my full-size DSLR, so I will be able to shoot with the lenses I already own.

Actually quite a good webcam (with an HDMI capture card)

Frankly think it’s rather strange seeing people walking around with a selfie stick talking to it – so no, I can’t speak to its use for “vlogging”.What I will say is that it’s a FANTASTIC webcam. Better image quality than the Logitech BRIO, which I didn’t think was possible (and more control over the image since it has settings on the device and doesn’t require the software).Doesn’t get warm at all even with extended on (my DSLR has this issue). It’s up there in price, but you do get what you pay for with this one.

Awesome Focus, but it lacks in just about everything else.

Sony came so close to making a great camera for vloggers and people on the move. It combines a 1″ sensor, Zeiss lens, and a truly fantastic focus system. Unfortunately, without some sort of active gimbal, it is nearly impossible to hold steady enough to get acceptable footage. I originally tried the handheld stick which came with the accessory pack… it was useless… even with the SteadyShot on I was unable to hold the camera still enough to eliminate shake.Notes- (please note… I am only reviewing this for its video capability)- I am going to start off with the positive. The focus system is remarkable. I absolutely love that the camera will put itself in macro mode and focus on objects in the foreground. It is also remarkably fast in focusing in making the adjustment. This is a very useful tool for doing vlog style product features… you can record your face and then have the camera immediately (and almost magically) focus on a product that you throw in front of it. The challenge is next point)- If you are doing this while holding the camera on some sort of non-active gimbal – your footage will likey have some serious shake. Personally, I find this to be a cardinal sin. YT and other services usually de-rank videos with shaky footage.- Of course, you can overcome the shake by 1) using a tripod 2) getting an active gimbal. Option 1 is ok… but it kinda defeats the purpose of the super-fast focus. So I went with #2… and I was able to find a pretty decent active gimbal that worked well. Honestly, it dropped the shake to a point that I would have expected from the camera alone.- The microphone is good… but not great. It is a solid choice for vlogging since it is omnidirectional.- The picture quality is pretty good, but it’s not going to blow you away. Like most cameras, it does well in well-lit conditions (i.e sunlight) but it starts to fall short in indoor environments. I was recently comparing footage (outdoors) between the ZV-1 and my iPhone 11 pro… the picture quality was comparable (although the iPhone has less shake). I am not saying an iPhone is better for videoing (its not.. the ZV-1 has much, much better focusing, microphone, options, and etc).- In a somewhat unfair comparison.. I recently filmed a trip to the zoo with both the ZV-1 and my Canon HFG60 (which also has a 1″ sensor). The Canon camcorder had a much better picture and I was able to film without the need of an active gimbal. Granted the Canon isn’t designed to be used for one-handed vlogging….. but it did highlight some of the limits with the ZV-1- Form – Another thing that Sony got right. The ZV-1 is super light, can easily be held one-handed, and has a nice articulating screen. I found the buttons to be a bit awkward and a bit too recessed which caused me to accidentally *not push* record when I was trying to record something.- The Sony menu system is ok… I am not used to it… so it is bit cumbersome for me- Pro features… This camera isn’t designed for pros. I see no option for manual focus (Not that big of a deal) but you really can’t even operate it in manual mode. It has a manual mode, but you’re not going to be able to change the settings on the fly.- The lens is a F1.8/2.8 so it is reasonably fast. It also allows for some decent bokeh despite a smallish sensor.Final Verdict… It kinda feels like I a being hard on the ZV-1 by giving it 3 stars. However…. on one of my trips, I forgot to bring the connecting plate for my gimbal, and the ZV-1 became nearly worthless. While it has some very strong features… it could have been so much more!

Not ideal for streaming. Read before buying.

I was looking for a higher quality camera to use for online meetings and streaming. My basic Logitech setups were no good. I found this camera through an internet search and it seems like a lot of people like it for streaming, but it is far from ideal for that purpose. In fact, it appears streaming was an afterthought for Sony with this camera and many design shortcomings reflect this. For example, you cannot use USB power alone to power this camera. The battery pack must be charged. On a full charge, it will give you around 90 minutes of stream time. Is there a workaround for this? Yes, apparently, but it is not easy: You have to buy a dummy battery, not sanctioned by Sony, that provides constant power. To do that, a cable must hang out of the open battery door. The problem? You cannot mount the camera if the battery door is open because it blocks the connection point. So you must buy another aftermarket part to extend the base of the camera. As this point, what’s the use? Just buy a different camera built buy engineers with streaming in mind. The picture quality is fine, but this camera is, first and foremost, a point and shoot everyday camera. Odds are your phone has one of those – and it is much better.

Great video/photos, image stabiliz OK, mic is ok external mic is better, battery life disappointing

This camera was getting tons of great reviews on Youtube….I was Between this and the Cannon M50. All the reviews I saw spoke highly of the mic…most certainly the onboard mic is not “shotgun mic” quality. Upon first use I knew I couldn’t use the onboard mic, brings to mind a song lyric “oh..am I sitting in a tin can, far above the world” The mic was one of the appeals of this lightweight point and shoot vlogger friendly camera. Image stabilization is probably a 7 out of 10. Sony video quality goes without saying. So all and all a good vlogging/point and shoot camera. Plan to get an external mic…but a small inexpensive shotgun mic will get the job done. I use Comica CVM Compact.Battery life is a real issue here..so I bought the optional bluetooth mini tripod and I used this for filming and vlogging, don’t expect much over 25 mins out of a battery if you’re filming…and the battery door/SD card door cannot be opened from the side…so you have to remove the tripod or quick mount every time you change to a new battery or remove/install full size SD card. This is simply a hassle for the user. I’m replacing my Sony AX33…for now I’d rather have the heavy video camera with longer battery life and better image stabilization. All and all it’s still a good point and shoot…just lacks in the engineering for easy removal of battery and SD card. Nobody wants to plug in their camera to charge it….especially if it won’t last 30 mins during video use. You need to buy additional batteries and a charger…but they’re pretty inexpensive. I’d buy it over a Cannon 80D any day of the week if that tells ya anything.Overall it’s light, very easy to use, great picture and video quality, decent image stabilization once you learn the camera, battery life is lacking and the mic might be ok for an entry level vlogger….always remember..viewers will forgive bad video…but bad audio will not be tolerated and your watch time will show it.Hope this helps you in your purchase decision. I will buy again if this one gets damaged. It’s as light as a feather!

Very small, like a toy. Buttons are microscopic.

This camera takes nice pictures, and is everything the various reviewers on the internet say (good pictures, videos, etc). For me, it was not what I wanted. The buttons and knobs are way too small, and my fingers are way too big to manipulate the thing. It is a very small camera, and is so light that it feels like a toy. On a tripod, it won’t shake, but in my hands it has no heft at all and shakes too much. The menu system is tedious, especially with the tiny buttons. But the good part is that there is a huge amount of help available on the net, due to the popularity of the camera.I bought an aftermarket grip and it is a lifesaver. Made by Aodelan. It helps with adding a little mass to the whole thing, and if you get this camera get the grip, without a doubt. You need to be careful using this thing. The lens extends about an inch and a half when engaged, and if you accidently have the camera facing down, the motor will try and push the lens out and make the camera do a pushup. I am sure this will damage the lens motor, so watch out!The picture quality is a little better than my cell phone. It can take pictures in moderate lighting, but it gets grainy.I mostly use cameras for tracking myself dancing tango with a partner, and for food photography. I have a Samsung NX10, which became obsolete. And I have a Canon G7. I am not sure that this Sony camera is any better than my old G7. But it is more modern.I think I would have been better off spending the money on lighting and continue using the G7. But the Sony camera is a good product, if you can deal with the tiny controls.Realistically, a good cell phone is about the same as this camera. I think the next step up from a good cell phone is probably a full frame camera with a good lens.

using it as a webcam for YouTube, streaming or screen recording

I love this camera for what it is, they say its made for content creators, the main reason i got it was it has Clean HDMI out so it works as a webcam, it can recorded as long as you need it to without shutting off like most camera and a few other things that make it a great webcam, some people say the camera does not zoom out wide enough. when i use it its about a arms length away and i have no problem with the field of view as long as you get the image stabilization settings right.. use the heavier image stabilization and it crops in and you don’t get that nice wide field of view so so use the middle setting for image stabilization and you dont loose that nice wide angel..its surprisingly good in lower light situations and even at high iso you do not get much grain in the video, the image quality is not quite as good as something like the Sony A6400 with a 16mm sigma lens but its just a small step down if you ask me. get the camera settings right and change the picture profile settings to your liking and this thing looks great, i have been using it for a few weeks now and its perfect for me, ,i have a video on YouTube on how to set this up as a webcam for YouTube or twitch or what ever you may use a webcam for, if you want to find that just search for “Danny Lightning Sony ZV-1 Webcam Setup” search for that on youtube and the video probably pops up, I go through all the in camera settings for webcam use. just get your self a nice capture card and the proper usb cable and change a few setting and you got a amazing looking webcameZV-1 vs regular webcam ( even the 250 dollar webcams) . this thing blows regular webcams out of the water, this is so much better its not even funny

Update to: Bought a lemon! Extremely dissatisfied customer here!

Update: So, after 6 mos of back & forth with the supplier, the repair people they referred me to & Sony themselves, I am very happy to report that SONY came thru for us. They had my daughter send the camera back to them, had their people check it out & decided it was just a one off – would cost more to fix it than replace it. We received a brand new camera, same model & they even sent back the SIM card & new battery I bought trying to fix it myself. Perseverance paid off & the customer service rep we dealt with was wonderful. Thank you, SONY, for standing behind your products. I will continue to be a customer.I bought this camera for my daughter – she does a lot on social media as part of her job. She was super excited about this model. Fast forward 9 months – the camera just stops working – won’t even turn on! Called support & was told it was probably the battery. Really? It’s less than a year old! Didn’t offer to send a new battery so I bought one. Camera turns on, works for approximately 5 minutes & shuts off again. Phone calls & emails go back & forth until what? You guessed it – “oh it’s out of warranty.” You gotta be kidding!!!😡 No one can tell me what’s actually wrong with the camera but a 3rd party service/repair shop quoted me almost $500 to fix it. Hello? That’s almost as much as the camera itself! NOT HAPPY!! Do NOT purchase this model from the vendor! Extremely dissatisfied customer here.

Is this better than your smartphone? Probably not.

I bought this to replace an iPhone XS Max for filming video for my YouTube channel. I was expecting to be wowed by the quality difference. Instead, I had look hard to see it under most lighting conditions. I did side by side videos and yes, this camera is better in low light, but not better enough that it opens up any new possibilities for filming. You can get better quality by tweaking the settings for each shot, but I bought this to run primarily in auto mode because of the nature of my channel, so that is how I tested it. The quality was noticeably different than my XS Max, but, not something that you’d see and go “oh, yeah, that’s better.” It’s more like, “Well there is less noise the shadows, but otherwise it looks about the same.” Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good camera. But for 800 bucks? No. And then of course there is the clunky 1995 interface. It’s a touch screen right? This is 2021 right? The age of smart phones? Who wants to mess around with clumsy menus, buttons and knobs? A smartphone is a much better experience. The day after I returned the ZV-1, I went and got an iPhone 12 Pro Max, and that is a better camera. Not for very low light, the ZV-1 shows more in dark situations, but who films in the dark for YouTube unless its on purpose to do a low light quality test? The 12 Pro Max actually shows greater detail in shadows in both bad and good lighting (though not in near darkness) and has a clearer, more detailed image with less noise than the ZV-1. And, of course, a modern interface that makes it a joy to use.Who should buy this camera? I guess people who need something relatively inexpensive to film themselves talking with a blurry background. That is the only justifiable use case I could think of. And yes, this is touted as a vlogging camera, so that is why it was created. If you’re thinking “this will be better than my smartphone for filming anything other than my own talking head,” well, depends on which phone you have, I guess. A flagship phone from the last year or two? No, that will be better than this camera, so don’t bother. How much would I pay for this camera? Or rather, what would the price have to be for me not to return it? 250 dollars might entice me to mess with the knobs and buttons. But then again, now that I have a 12 Pro Max? Probably not. Then again, I’m not a vlogger and never film myself talking, so there is that.

    Best vlog camera

I watched a lot of videos on this camera before ordering, and everyone said it was the best of the best for vlogging specially. I make my daily blogs on this camera, I LOVE the auto settings because it corrects automatically to whatever lighting you need in any setting. Perfect for vlogs. I love the product showcase, instantly focusing on what I want it to focus on. The flip out screen is in a great position, I love the big record button, and the versatility of this camera. I’m a huge SONY fan already and this camera made me an even bigger one. THE ONLY CON ABOUT THIS CAMERA (in my opinion) is the battery life. This thing loses battery so quickly, so just make sure to charge it frequently and check the battery before going out to film. Otherwise, it’s definitely worth the money. I take it with me everywhere. It fits easily into my small purse, and it’s easy to use if you’re a beginner. Love this camera!

    No bull!

The active stabilization on the ZV1 is absolutely remedial and in no way justifies the PR offensive that Sony hyped this as the ultimate vlogging camera. You will need a $200 gimble to get any useable footage while moving (and not the Sony gimble which is worthless for stabilizing.Compounding this flaw…when camera is set to active stab., it crops the frame so that when holding at arms length, you are unable to keep your head completely in the shot. Vlogging today is mixed media, versatility is the name of the game. Sitting, standing…on the move…Sony signed off on this as the ‘ultimate vlogging camera’. Really Sony?Shame on those who hyped this product on their vlogs…who were comped ZV1’s by Sony but were more interested in getting reviews out quickly than with familiarizing themselves with the product. Why am I giving this 4 stars?Because i dont have an option to give it 3 1/2 and I didn’t buy the ZV1 strictly for vlogging and also the ZV1 lives up to the hype in nearly every other respect. The Sony picture quality (built in ND filter) is outstanding and the auto focus w/ product showcase is a vlogging game changer. To bad Sony did not take stabilization development as seriously as GoPro because the ZV1 could have been the ‘ultimate’.

    Compact camera with killer autofocus

Sony ZV-1 is a lightweight camera that I’ve been curious about as soon as Sony announced about it and after using it for some time now, I think it’s pretty great! Sony is well known for its super-fast autofocus in their alpha 6000 series and being able to get that in this small package is awesome. The product showcase mode is incredibly fast with switching focus and it’s a must for those who review products. I like that the camera turns on/off when the screen flips out and back in, and there’s a dedicated button to start recording so that you don’t have to switch from photo mode to video mode! Can’t miss much moment with this setup. The stabilization is great but I think it may need a bit more for walking fast, but it’s pretty decent! The battery life seems good so far and the camera body looks awesome.I’d mainly use this to take vlog videos of my little one and take product review photos. The vari-angle screen is certainly helpful and is a must in my camera needs. I’d use auto exposure and autofocus set to the center and it’s been working great. If I had to nitpick, I do wish the tripod hole wasn’t right by the battery/memory card slot opening, because you’d have to remove it to swap things out. The touchscreen is mainly for tapping to focus but not to navigate within settings. I think it’s something that Sony can easily push out a software update for, but they don’t for some reason. Despite these quirks, I think it’s a sweet camera for those who love taking videos and it’s also great for photos considering how well its autofocusing system works. Can’t wait to see more contents I can get out of this camera!

Was good for the first year, now it’s overheating all the time. :/

The good: Excellent picture quality, easy to use and set up, point and shoot. The Bad: Camera overheats constantly. And we’re not even recording with it. Just using it as a streaming camera for zoom calls with an HDMI capture card. This issue started happening after about a year of continued indoor use. We’re now looking at fan options to help keep the camera cool so it doesn’t shut off mid stream.

NOT great for live streaming and can’t do 4k

Update: I have confirmed the ZV-1 can’t livestream 4k. Sony answered questions saying it can, but they aren’t answering the right question. When livestreaming, you are using the clean viewfinder HDMI as the livestream source. I’ve confirmed the viewfinder HDMI is always 1080p. The HDMI port CAN produce 4k when playing back a recorded video, which I believe is the reason Sony claims it can do 4k. Note that I want 4k as I record the video with OBS as I stream in 1080p or 720p, and I want the “original” recording in 4k. As for the focus and video quality, I put a Logitech Brio on a tripod next to the ZV-1 and opened OBS studio mode with the Brio and ZV-1 video side-by-side in 1080p as that’s the best resolution the ZV-1 can do. The ZV-1 is adjusted better out-of-the-box, and I noticed it did better fighting moire patterns with fine lines. But the Brio’s autofocus is much faster and more responsive. I won’t need a showcase mode with the Brio. I knocked it back to 2 stars due to the Brio having a cost of one fourth. Please note that I’m not reviewing all the ZV-1 photo/video recording features to an sdcard. If that is what you need, then this review is not for you.Original review:There are so many positive reviews of this camera that I thought it was a must for live streaming. My first impressions are not so good. My setup is studio-only (on a tripod) with HDMI through an Elgato 4k camlink into OBS. I enabled the clean display, set it to 16:9, and turned off the audio (I have another audio source). So far I’ve found it only “streams” 1080p over HDMI (it might do 1080i but I didn’t try). I don’t see a way to obtain 4k over HDMI beyond recording to an sdcard and replaying, which I have not tried as I don’t plan to use it that way.So strike 1 on lack of 4k streaming. Next I noticed the autofocus is slow. At first I was under lower light conditions, daylight, but inside and not well lit. Focus was absolutely terrible. It would take several seconds to focus, if it focused properly at all. I then lit up my LimoStudio lights and then AF started to work, but still not subsecond as advertised. Under bright lighting I managed to get the Showcase mode to work, but it utterly failed under normal interior lighting. Strike 2 on the AF. I was really hoping for great autofocus, but as it is I’ll go for manual which loses a great deal of function this camera was supposed to offer.I’ll spend more time with it to make sure I have the settings right. Note that I’m comparing against use of Logitech Brio 4k Pro webcams which so far seem to be far better for my scenario. I’ll do more direct A/B comparison in case I’m overlooking something.

    Battery/Energy Concerns

I use this camera for my Youtube videos; ChristopherBF1. But the battery life is not the best and has to be charged after multiple uses and has a tendency to overheat quickly, thus causing delays when filming because you have to wait for it to cool down. When recording, it can only record for about 5 minutes before it randomly stops recording due to overheating. It’s best to time yourself when recording so you do not go past the 5 minutes or before you realize that you haven’t been recording anything. The quality is excellent and the auto-focus is very accurate and great for video. If you watch some of my most recent Youtube videos where it is me talking, based on the lighting, the capture quality is great and the width it captures is good too. The recording mechanics of the images the camera captures are great, just the battery life and the constant 5-minute recordings can get tiresome and frustrating if you forget. If you’re focused enough to get used to recording and stopping frequently then it is a reliable camera since the quality is good. 3.5/5, but I gave it a 4 since its more good than bad

    Not the best livestreaming cam

I currently have a five camera livestream rig for my drumming channel on YouTube, using the Zoom Q2n4K model. Those cams work great, but leave a bit to be desired in lower-light situations.Recently I made a pilgrimage to B&H Photo in NYC and spoke to some of the experts there and asked “what’s the next step up for me in terms of a good livestream cam?” And this camera came highly recommended. So I bought one to try out.For starters, I have large hands and accessing the tiny buttons to even turn the camera on was a challenge. Once I got past the initial startup screens and figured out the display was not a touchscreen, I was able to get the camera into the mode I wanted, which was the livestream mode. I noticed that the output within OBS (my streaming software) was not as smooth as the Zoom cams. This was the real dealbreaker for me.And so, I shall keep looking for the next cam to check out. Until then, I just purchased three more Q2n4K cams for my studio for almost $150 less than one of these units. THey’re working just fine for me, save the low light quality. That’s an easy fix, just add more light.

Initial impression: good but uses micro USB

Just got this camera today and here are some observations:One big disappointment is it uses micro USB instead of the more current USB-C. No matter how good the camera is, it is hard to recommend a camera with a micro USB connector. It uses an electronic zoom lense so I wonder if it can be easily used with a gimbal. You’d have to balance the gimbal while the camera is on and set to a specific zoom and if you turn off the camera, can you easily return to the exact zoom level? If not, you may have to rebalance the gimbal. I’ll have to do some testing and then update this review. The main reason I buy this camera is for the slow motion feature.Lastly, this camera was shipped in its box inside a shipping box without any packing material. The shipping box is dented but fortunately the camera still works.
