60 reviews for Canon RF16mm F2.8 STM Black Electronics

  1. Kevin Willmorth

    5.0 out of 5 stars

    Lovely wide angle lens

I purchased this lens for auto interior photos and interiors, as well as recreational use in landscapes. I was pleasanlty surprised by its quality, and when process using Canon lens profile correction, the images are flat with minimal distortion. While I have other wide angle options in zoom lenses in the bag, this 16mm prime is brighter and feather light, so is a great addition, especially for the proce. The other lens that shares this lenses architecture is the nifty fifty 50mm prime. Also super light and easy to use. Is the 16mm lens as good as “L” glass costing thousands? Of course not. But, for the 99% of us who just need clean, sharp images, lightweight for mobility, and an addition of wide angle for those instances when a longer lens just isn’t going to work – this 16mm lens is a champ!

    Wonderful for the price

Went out shooting in the winter and it performed quite well for what it is. The lens distortion doesn’t correct for everything and doesn’t allow to turn off the correction (which can be fun sometimes), but I like what I see so far.It is super light, super sharp, GREAT depth of field, and just over all what I was looking for. The issues with night photography are what I expected when seeing the reviews and knowing it is the cheaper version of an ultra wide angle lens. I’m happy with what I got and am looking forward to having more fun with it.

    Excellent little lense

I got this lens specifically for use kayaking and cycling, as it is tiny and light. It has not disappointed! It basically lives on my grab-and-go setup (Canon RP) and does a fantastic job in most circumstances.I can also say with experience that, while not the equal of the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L for image quality, it produces similar enough results for most folks at 16mm.

    Really good for the price.

I bought this for real state photography and it’s really good for the price.Of course there are better options, but taking into account the price, it’s a great starting point before investing 2000 in a pro lens.

    Great lens overall

This is a great lens especially for the price. The biggest issue is the distortion but that is solved with editing software.

You get more than you pay for

For the cost and its excellent portability this is a great lens. It’s small, light, renders good color and has very good sharpness across the frame. The corners are less sharp than the center but this is true of most lens. To focus, this lens uses an audible STM motor. When it focuses you can hear a soft humming sound, this is normal. The lens focus speed is similar to all of the other Canon STM lens, not super fast but fast enough for many situations. If you focus stack or shoot video over you might want to know that the lens does focus breath a little. The lens is mostly plastic but still has a good feel and is built well enough for normal use. This lens does not have a weather seal on the camera mount like some of the higher end lens. The lens accepts 43mm sized threaded filters on the front. A lens hood is not included but may be purchased separately, it uses model: EW-65C. In summary, if you shoot with the Canon RF system you should strongly consider adding one of these to your camera bag! Update: the latest version of Adobe Lightroom now has built-in profiles for this lens!

A great lens for vlogging, not as good for stills

This Canon RF16mm F2.8 STM lens was purchased on sale and for that price provided very good value for my intended vlogging use during travel. It is light weight and unobtrusive which helps my gimbal performance. Image quality is quite acceptable for live or recorded video, especially when moving around. for still photography, the lens exhibits noticeable light drop-off in the corners which many not appeal to those that don’t want that vignette effect. Its a keeper and I appreciate that it takes up little space in my camera backpack.

    Buen lente

El lente llegó en excelente condiciones. En cuanto a su calidad, está muy bien para su precio. Nunca he usado un gran angular de calidad superior, así que no puedo compararlo, sin embargo, me gustó lo que vi con este lente.

Small and light, but relies HEAVILY on software corrections

Canon has taken the approach of creating a lens that is very light and produces a decent image, but does so at the price of requiring significant software correction. What this means is that the actual image the lens produces is dramatically distorted at the edges and has a significant amount of darkening in the corners. However, Canon’s cameras can be set to automatically correct this in-camera, and most processing software will apply the corrections to raw images after the fact. Those of you critical of image quality, be aware that these corrections will cause loss of sharpness at the edges and corners of the image. So for the majority of work, this lens is actually a really nice light portable item. But for situations in which corner sharpness is important, such as architecture or landscape work, you may have to pass on this lens. It’s a bit of a shame, since most amateurs can’t afford they’re really expensive ultra wide angle lenses that better correct this sort of thing. This would have been a good travel wide lens for more scenarios if it had been a little bit better corrected physically. And, of course, Canon being Canon are too cheap to include a simple plastic hood and then have the audacity to charge almost fifty dollars for a piece of plastic. Go the smart route and buy the JJC hood.

It is a real go-to when you need to focus on something within the wide-angle range. I’m using it to replace my Canon EF 10-22mm. So far, no complaints.

Ultra wide and light but notable distortion

Received this lens from my wife for Christmas 2021. I love lightweight lenses and was super excited about this one. It worked as advertised and is a very appealing lens. Just know that it has notable distortion. Maybe that is true if any 16mm lens. My primary purpose for photography is portraiture, and I picked up this lens to do selfies with my family (fit everybody in). Turns out that we use it as a fun lens – making silly faces and grouping together tightly – but there still is a lot of distortion.I plan to use it as a landscape lens when hiking and doing trips to national parks.I love that Canon is now producing lightweight prime lenses that are affordable for the EOS R (mirrorless) system. Can’t wait for the 24mm F1.8 that is supposed to come out in 2022.

    Best Lens

This is the best lens for the day, night, and wide-angle photography. The pictures are tack sharp and beautiful. It is a very powerful lens as compared to expensive lenses. I used it with R5, results are as good as my 24-70 $2400 Lens. It is STM motor a little noise while focusing, but no problem. I’ll post pictures later if you are still undecided buy or not. worth it.

    Great little pice of glass!

Switched from sony system back to canon and R5 and R6. Needed a wide angle lens for real estate photography for RF mount. Only time I use ultra wide is real estate. Lens does a great job! Sharp enough great color reproduction, chromatic aberrations well controlled. Autofocus a bit on the slower side which not an issue for me. Money and value in my case is 5 stars! Does exactly what it was purchased for!

    Lacks a hood

Very nice lens for the price. It sorely needs a hood however, and Canon should not cheap out by failing to include one. Fortunately Amazon (and probably others) sells a after market hood for about $15 which should be ordered if buying the lens.

    Great lens for the money

I’m a real estate agent and amateur photog. I didn’t have time to book a photographer so I got this lens for emergencies like this and I want to learn astral photography. There is barrel distortion along the edges like most wide angles but you can fix all of that in photoshop. I use the warp tool. You cannot go wrong with thi lens for the money.

Must have for street and Komodo

I’ve been shooting a lot with this lens on my R6 and Komodo, it fills a great space on the widest end of my kit. AF is super fast and smooth, even in video. Even portraits are fun with it. My only complaint is that it’s not a pancake lens like my fave old EF 40mm, but that’s Canon for you.

Your Go To Wide Angle Boi

Will this be your end all lens for wide angles? Quite possibly! I use it for Real Estate photography and not only does the lens have an insanely small footprint in any bag, but it will handle any wide angle test with no issues. The only time I noticed any real vignetting is during bracketing pictures.

Excellent quality, light… I wish there was IS

Using this lens with my RP, the setup isn’t that much heavier or bulkier than my smartphone. I can finally easily carry a full frame camera everywhere – a dream! The quality of the images from this lens is superb, though there seems to be some issue with the firmware – it says it needs updating to use this lens. I’ve been using the lens without this update, but I keep getting messages about it whenever I wake up the camera for a photo.I only wish there was IS because the RP does not have in-body image stabilization. That limits me a lot in low light, even with the f/2.8. Why is everything in life a trade-off? Oh well. I’m still very happy to have this new lens, and at this price it was a no-brainer.

    Must have for travel

It’s not an L, meaning it’s not weather-sealed. But let’s be real, for this price it’s a cinematic version of the nifty fifty. As long as you’re not taking it into driving rainstorms, a pancake ultra wide prime at f/2.8 is a value. The colors are contrasty and interesting. There is a slight bit of CA but that’s easily removed in Lightroom or your post software of choice. Even if you have the real deal zooms, this is a useful piece of glass.

Just a notch away from perfection

I know you’ve seen the reviews, you know that this lens uses some tricks to correct the images, and you know even so, the pictures look great. Not many options for 16mm RF lenses, but it’s by far the best option you will get. I didn’t shoot much with it yet, so I don’t have a lot of shots to showcase here. The autofocus is really damn good. This beats my ultrawide iPhone 11 lens by miles, well it’s also because of the sensor on my RP, but yeah.

    Chep and pour quality

This lens is relatively cheap, so you can’t expect anything from it. A cheap lens with all the disadvantages of its cheapness. Is not as sharp as shown in the review, attempts to enlarge the image show all optical defects that can be in such a lens. The only advantage – it is available for purchase. I do not recommend it for even a bit demanding photographers. For amateurs who will post these photos on social media and watch them on their phones, that’s enough.

Lens uses non internal zoom element

This newer RF lenses from canon has optics that zoom or pertrude outside of the lens when zooming. This makes it less then desirable compared to how other manufacturers make lenses

Very lightweight, go anywhere ultra wide lens

This lens is tiny, relatively inexpensive, and goes very wide (albeit with some image correction magic).I love the 16mm perspective, and prior to this lens was using an EF mount 16-35mm f/4L IS. That lens is clearly sharper at f/4 (even though this lens is already stopped down at f/4) and has an image stabilizer. And has other focal lengths! so clearly a superior lens. But.. probably five times the size and weight. If you want a single small lens for travel on your RF full-frame camera, it’s hard to beat this one. On reduced-frame, I am not so sure this lens is all that great – the 10-18mm kit zoom goes just as wide, isn’t large, is much cheaper, and has IS.

    Perfect for real estate

I’m a big fan of everything Canon, so when i was able to purchase my Canon EOS R and some lenses, I was excited to try them out. I was very pleased with them all, but was curious to see what the distortion would be on the 16 since it’s a fisheye lens. The results were awesome. You are able to get a wide angle view without the annoying distortion, and the clarity is excellent. This lens is a must-have.

    Built-in stabilization!

A nice lens. But note that it has built-in stabilization so can only use it on a tripod, otherwise image gets weirdly distorted

    Great lens for Canon R7

Bought to give myself a roughly 25mm lens on my R7. Overall very happy with the results.

    Great Value

I purchased this lens specifically for travel, due to its size. I have not one, but TWO 16-35 lenses so it felt redundant, but I’m really glad I bought it.First off, incredible price. Second, SO TINY OMG SO TINY AND LIGHT. Image quality is great. Two drawbacks. One: chromatic aberration does happen and it is a bit of a purple fringe – compared with a friend who noticed the same thing. It is more evident than my other L series EF lenses, but also not extreme. Easily fixable in post processing, and really not a big deal for what you are getting. Two: This will only matter if you swap between AF and MF a lot, and I do…there’s no physical toggle on the lens to switch between modes. It’s a menu in the camera that you have to access. It’s a minor annoyance when I’m in a hurry. But, maybe that is part of the reason they are able to make this lens so tiny. For this ridiculously low price I think this is a must have.

    Compact, Inexpensive Ultrawide lens

This is a solid performer for the price, in a very nice form factor. Its corner performance is a little weak, probably due to extensive in-camera corrections, but if you use it for landscapes like I do and you don’t mind a bit of a fisheye effect, you can shoot raw and avoid that problem.

    Too much distortion..

Great little lens if you’re taking JPG pics. Terrible if you’re shooting RAW. Seriously warped image like a fish-eye lens. I know it can be corrected in post edit, but that’s not the point. I have another of this brand that’s a 10mm and it has very little distortion. I returned both of them (I bought 2)

Great lightweight and low-cost alternative to RF 15-35

This lens is great for gimbal use or all-day carrying around. I don’t own the RF 15-35 due to weight and cost, but this lens gets the job done and is way less intrusive to subjects that than lens would be. It does have some significant distortion that is auto-corrected with camera software, but overall for the cost and size I think it’s worth it!
