    5.0 out of 5 stars

Actually I give it 4.5 stars

I took a half star off because of the dumb fm antenna wire on this. I did not pay attention to the fm antenna connection when I purchased this. I listen to the radio early in the morning and I should not have to grab my phone to bluetooth a radio station even though it works extremely well. Even the higher end Sony models have this type of antenna. Luckily it sits close enough to a window that I laid the wire flat on the windowsill.Picks up the station I usually listen to ok…45 miles away. This not a entry level receiver..it is a budget entry level receiver. Randy the cheapaudioman on youtube gave this a do not buy recommendation.I recommend that you get this at or slightly above the black friday price. Well I am new to a/v receivers so it was quite the learning curve. I just about took this thing out to the garage and took a sledgehammer to it.But I finally got it to work right for me. Took a while.I plugged my roku ultra 4800x into this and did the setup which was easy. Read the instruction manual. And I think you should learn the amp menu also. There are setting in there that are NOT on the on screen settings. This receiver plays good stereo content from my turntable, radio and dvd player. I stream content to my tv and I could not get all 5 speakers to work with 2.0 content from the streaming services I use. 5.1 worked.I paid good money for my speakers and not being able to use all of them for 2.0 content was a dealbreaker for me. I have Polk elite signature 20s for the mains..polk xt35 for the center and polk xt15s for the surrounds. I finally figured it out. You have to enable audio passthrough on the roku to get all five speakers to play for 2.0 content. On top of that every time I pressed the roku power button everything comes on like it should. Except the roku wanted to change the setting to auto hdr on every power up.My tv is not capable of doing GOOD hdr so I do not use it. The fix is to go into the roku HDMI SECRET MENU and enable/disable automatic recovery at the bottom right of screen. I hope this helps somebody. My apple tv 4k did not do this but I put it on a different tv because apple does not have the weather channel streaming app nor does it have passthough audio. I call it APPLE SOUND. This receiver does not have any clear voice or clear dialogue tech in it. So I have to turn up the center for some content and turn it back down for music. Also I am not a fan of the loud sound effects in some 5.1 content.Night mode works, but what I use is the dynamic compression setting….only selectable through the amp menu….off…auto…on. Its under hdmi in the amp menu. It only comes on for 5.1 content…there is a indicator light. There is no instructions on how to do this in the manual! For me to get acceptable 5.1 sound from this I enabled dynamic compression…bumped rear speaker up a little..lowered my mains a little and raised the center a little for dialogue. What a hassle and learning curve this was. For what I paid….black friday price it was worth it. That is why I gave it 5 stars. Will be looking a DENON S660H receiver next black friday..lol.That is a entry level receiver. You also will need a subwoofer for this. I actually finally got this to sound both pretty good for both tv and music. Also 2 channel surround sound mode is nice…good job SONY.Other brands of receivers have clear voice settings….dynamic compression and other settings all available in the on screen menu. But I got this thing figured out finally..most people do not have the time to horse around with something like this. I hope this helps somebody out. I just got an A in home theater school..lol.Have a good day!

    Sounds Great,

I bought to replace an old TV sound system. Have it powering 2 Sony tower speakers and 3 polk (center & bookcase). In our seventies hearing dialogue is problematic and this setup really helps clarity. Receiver has plenty of power so distortion in voices is nonexistent. Setup was simple, calibration with the included mic was also simple. We also use for music via Youtube and Amazon and this unit can rock the house…lol. IMHO this is a wonderful value for what we use it for. Bought from Amazons warehouse at a great price also got the speakers there.

    Works as advertised.

My setup is not that special. I wanted a simple, and cheap AV solution to connect a cable box and computer to an old Plasma 1080p display and connected to two speakers. So I’m not actually using all 5.1 outputs on the device. The unit is working fine, sound is good. One annoying issue is when I turn off the TV, it will turn off the receiver. Probably a feature of the HDMI but I found it odd that it would do that. Maybe it will grow on me but currently, I wish it didn’t do that.I love the look of the receiver. Clean and simple. Not busy. Adds a bit of elegance to the electronics. One of the reasons I got this unit.I am a little disappointed they didn’t include AM radio but then I hear talk that AM radio may be discontinued where I am. Also, other than in the car for traffic reports, I don’t listen to AM much at all so not a huge loss.

A Bargain and It Works Very Nicely

After 18 years with an old receiver, I finally gave myself a treat with this one. I had no trouble switching my speaker wires over and the HDMI input from my computer and output to my 32-inch monitor worked just fine. This combination of equipment is both my computer and TV and now I’ve got a complete set that’s up-to-date. I spent a few hours using the remote, fine-tuning the audio and speaker settings, until I had them just the way I like. My front room has become a small-size music hall and it’s a pleasure to have the volume higher. It’s a good thing I live in a separate house and not an apartment. I ran the HDMI-ARC output line to the monitor and it accepted it without any adjustments necessary. I didn’t rate the Bluetooth function as I chose not to use it for this receiver (my keyboard and mouse are connected with it). I used an optical audio line from my DVR and that was OK. My subwoofer works so much better than with my old receiver, as now I can set it for my small front and center speakers and get more response. I spent a long time looking over all the receivers that are available and no other looked so good to me for my purposes, regardless of price. It doesn’t seem that it’s possible, but it looks like I’m getting a better 4K image on my monitor from this receiver, than by running it through an HDMI audio-extractor, which was the only way I could get digital audio with my old receiver.

I’m underutilizing it, but works perfectly

I’ve had this for just over two years as of the time of this review. And I’m very happy with it.My use case is a bit simple. I have it in a 2.1 setup. Primarily it plays audio from my TV over optical and it does that well. I do have an HDMI cable connected to the TV as well, and it has CEC support, so using the TV remote works for power and volume on this, which is nice.I also occasionally use it with a pre-amped record player which sounds great. I also occasionally use the HDMI pass-through. 4K seems to work, though I generally use 1080p for that particular application so I can’t speak too much to it.

    So Far, So Good

We bought this to replace the receiver from a home entertainment sound system that was over 20 years old and just stopped working. I have generally had good luck with Sony and the reviews were encouraging. It was relatively easy to hook up to our smart TV and the components of our wired sound system. I haven’t tested the Bluetooth yet. I am not experienced with sound systems, but this receiver works great for us. The only minor issue we have is that the volume of the subwoofer is very low. This is more due to the old subwoofer than the receiver.

Replacing a receiver that burnt out

One day I walked into the living room, grabbed the receiver’s remote and turned it on. It went off almost immediately. I tried turning it on again and I heard a very quiet pop and smelled a whiff of burnt wiring (I think it was probably a circuit board, but what do I know?). So…not having any familiarity with testing and replacing circuit boards, I pronounced it dead and started looking for a replacement. Now, so far I have not mentioned the brand of the dead receiver, but I can say, at the time I purchased it, it was around $500 so not a cheap, off brand and it worked flawlessly…until it didn’t. I did want something similar, but did not have exactly the same amount of money to spend this time around so…I did some research on a few different receivers and chose this Sony. I have a full set of Klipsch surround sound speakers – a dual subwoofer set – so I wanted a 5.2 receiver to be able to attach both my subwoofers. The receiver works perfectly well with the speakers and the dongles I use most often to Chromecast movies from my laptop to the TV or the Roku dongle to watch shows on the channels I have through Roku. This is a fine receiver that is working well with my TV and speaker system.

    So far so good!

Delivered next day(awesome job amazon, not related to review)After having an onkyo HT-R550 for about 9 years(unhappy with it the entire time), with its measly 6-70watts per channel, having to max out the volume to get my original American made KLH towers to wake up…Tldr: onkyo sucksWent with this one, solely because of the wattage per channel. 750w is hard to find for this price.Sound quality is above par for devices of this caliber. Zero static. Volume is DRASTICALLY better than my last unit. Not wanting to expand beyond 5.1, I’m happy to purchase a 2nd subwoffer to complete the environmental sound.Only had it one day, so I mat return to this review in the future. My last sony reciever lasted over 14 years. Onkyo almost 10 years until my 2yo put pennies in the vent holes like a coin machine and literally blew it up.

Works perfectly out of the box

Works perfectly out of the box. What more could you want? Bluetooth connectivity is easy–click, click, click, and then tunes. The only thing I don’t like is it interprets low bass for subwoofer very poorly–you can’t hear the kick drum with music, but wind grazing the microphone from a YouTuber recording outdoors will make the subwoofer rumble … WTH?

After 2+ years, keeps switching input by itself

Wonderful sound — but the unit has begun switching to different sources. Hard to enjoy when you are waiting for the signal to disappear mysteriously. Lifetime of just over two years is not acceptable.

    Good low cost receiver

Watched Dune on HBO. I was in a movie theater. The receiver handled the sound output to some large speakers I inherited. (I don’t know the wattage.)I set up the system quickly, the wires for the speakers were easy to connect tightly. The sound from the unit is very good. Once I got to the back pages of the manual I found all of the sound effects. I had been watching a football game and could barely hear the announcers. A few sound effect changes later I was in the stadium.I really like the movie sound effect for watching movies of course but also for drama. The four stars are for problems with communicating between the TV and the receiver over HDMI. It’s still a problem. I want to turn off the TV and have the receiver turn off too. I does, some of the time. Usually it works but occasionally I have to power cycle the the TV. (Samsung QLED) Before I found the back pages to tell me to turn on the HDMI communication, I’d have to unplug the TV. I talked to the TV service tech and they said it was ‘signal confusion’ and recommended I use the fibre sound system. The other problem is occasionally when I switch from cable TV to the apps (Netflix, Prime, Hulu, etc.) on the TV the receiver doesn’t always switch to the sound from the TV rather than the cable TV system. (I’ve got a TiVo). Instead I’ve got Netflix on the screen and sound from a TV channel on the speakers. Other times I can turn off the TV but have the sound continue. It’s still a work in progress.Annoying in the receiver screen waiting for input as to whether I’m WATCH, GAME, or MUSIC, or other options. Selecting WATCH I get a list of inputs. The only one I have on the receiver is TV/Sat but it wants me to select it before it’ll go away. You know, it could be smarter that that or maybe it’s me that’s not smart enough and the answer is somewhere in the back pages of the manual. RTFM.

Better than I thought it would be.

Connected up and calibrated faster than my previous Samsung. This thing is not super fancy but really works well. BT very quick. It actually sounds much better than I thought it would. I was not looking for an audiophile dream system obviously but I also did not expect this to sound so good either. Amazing for my TV audio. The surround sound, the bass and the ease of setup has made me happy on this purchase.

    some basic features are absent

Maybe I’m just old, but I think this received is missing some basic elements. 1) I like to have knobs to set the treble/bass/etc. This gives you only and few preset mixes to choose from. I would rather set my own mix. that’s not exactly high tech: bass/treble/midrange knobs have been around since stereo was created. 2) if you can’t do that, then Sony can create a phone app to handle all of the settings (as opposed to just a hand held controller). I have an older Yamaha home theater receiver that is several years old and it too lacks knobs but at least it comes with a phone app that has many more preset mixes to choose from and it allows me to control a lot of other features of the receiver. I had to hook up an old computer monitor to use the functions, and the quality of that is something on the order of Windows 7 generation software (if that). Sony shouldn’t be this far behind Yamaha in terms of customer convenience 3) the buttons on the front of the receiver (for choosing mode: video/radio/bluetooth etc) have labels that are so small I have to use a flashlight and a magnifying glass. Overall, I can live with this, since it’s just for my home office, not for my home “theater” system in a bigger room with a 50+ sq in (old) TV. But I expected better from Sony.

I Miss bass and treble knobs…

Let me start by saying I am pretty happy with this receiver but it gets four stars for lack of a simple tone control. I am powering 2 Acoustic Resesrch 3As from the late 60s for anyone who is an audiophile. I have an old Optimus center channel (yeah cheap RadioShack product but it works….simple as that) and a Onkyo sub. It rocks it pretty well. These 3As like real power to drive them with 12” woofers and Mids/highs. I can generate good volume levels with clean sound on the Bluetooth from my Apple Music. Works great with new tv and gaming systems on optical output. The outputs that support a low level sub out are lacking but no big deal. The main problem is I am ab audio geek so I want to tweak my tone controls for almost every song I listen to so I can get it just right. This receiver only has a bass and treble if you are using the AV controls through an onscreen tv adjustment. If u use it just for audio receiver then you are out of luck. Someone bring back simple bass treble adjustment knobs!! For the money I am very happy to use this as a bridge to my dead 25 year old Yamaha receiver but I see McIntosh in my near future…

Annoying On Screen Display – Almost Perfect

I use this with an Nvidia Shield stream box, and Sony made this thing almost perfect. With other setups i have used, the devices all fight each other with eArc, and stuff is turning on and off. With this receiver, everything just works. I push a button on my shield remote, and everything wakes up and works great. Good sound, amazing ease of use, and overall a great experience – almost perfect, and an amazing product given the price.Except. There had to be an except, didn’t there? The problem i have is that the receiver randomly thinks that nothing is playing(?) and throws up a big obtrusive OSD that covers the screen. It does not go away on its own. Since i’m just using the Nvidia Shield remote, i have to get up, walk across the room, and switch the inputs on the receiver itself. Then i switch back and it will work fine.Maybe i’m being harsh by deducting two stars for this. But there’s no way to completely disable the OSD, and it’s just very frustrating to deal with. My TV is in my family room where i can see it when i’m cooking – and every once in a while i have to stop what i’m doing to wash my hands and go fiddle with the thing. If you’re going to use the receiver remote, maybe this is no big deal. Maybe you’ll buy one and it will never do this to you. If it weren’t for this one massive annoyance, i likely would have just forgone the extra channels available (i have another room with a 7.2 setup) and bought a second one of these.

    Works well

Only complaint is that it’s slow to respond and sometimes fails to work in conjunction with television remote. Performance is very good.

    Still evaluating (will update)

Looks somewhat retro and seems to fit the bill for my home. Only thought would be no internet 🤔 connection. Kind of wondering the age of the unit? I’m having some issues I haven’t narrowed down whether it’s this unit or Satellite receiver. My signal through hdmi cable is dropping out sound and picture for approximately 2-3 seconds.

    Solid Value from Sony

I wouldn’t have given up my 20-year old JVC receiver had it not finally given up on me. But it was a good time to incorporate HDMI switching in a receiver and retire my external switch. This had the added benefit of resolving an odd audio delay that came from my TV processing the video a fraction of a second faster than it output the audio on optical cable to the old receiver. Now I have the switch built in, audio coming from the HDMI signal matches video displayed on the screen, and the sound is decent. No, it’s not a high-end unit and I don’t need that. Setup was pretty easy, and I didn’t feel the need to override the settings made by the unit itself using the enclosed microphone to balance my 5 speakers and subwoofer. The menus are relatively intuitive, which is good because the owner’s manual is a bit sparse on detail of the more esoteric settings. There is an unexpectedly loud metal click when the unit is turned on; it’s one of those things that I’ll get used to in a couple weeks and never think about again. One other thing: if you saw as I did in prior reviews many people disliked the very long screen display when changing volume, it’s been changed by Sony to about 3 seconds; just long enough to confirm the volume setting you wanted, and then it disappears. My unit was manufactured in the 4th quarter of 2022 so this change was made by then.

    Great system

Giving this a 5 star cuz I like it. But the instructions were a little hard to follow. Overall though works great, and once I got it working had no issues. But just remember, the issue might be the settings on the tv.

SONY is a very good mid-priced tuner and amp.

I worked for Alpine / Luxman for two years in IndPls, IN; in the early 80’s. Alpine is stilled used in Lamborghini’s and BWS’s, factory installed. The Luxman is a great home interment audio system. Just have A high-end credit card. ENJOY the SONY STRDH590 5.2 Channel Surround Sound Home Theater Receiver. the PYLE receivers/amps ARE GOOD AFTER NEVER TURNING there unit off for four years. The Lukeville products are bad because the Bluetooth does not work. ENJOY

    Nice inexpensive unit

This my 2nd Sony Reciever. My first was a similar unit but with Blue Ray and Internet Connection for YouTube, and other apps. But after 10 years the front display was so dim you could hardly see it. The Internet would not connect saying the unit was unregistered. I was looking for a simple inexpensive receiver with 5.1 Surround sound for running my TV programs through. What I like about this unit is that it has a TV out HDMIV connection and 4 HDMIV in connections. I simply connect my satellite HDMIV cable to its corresponding Satellite in connection, or a DVD or a Lap Top to one of the extra HDMIV connections and the receiver controls the output to the TV. All you need to do is select the input (ie: Satellite, Computer, DVD) and the receiver controls the output to the TV. You don’t need multiple HDMIV cables going to different inputs in your TV, only to the Receiver. Sound is good. Menu and Amp Functions show up on the TV so you can set up the receiver from the TV. Very simple set up. I also like the speaker set up function. You put the Mike in the area where you normally watch TV, plug it into the corresponding connection in the receiver and start an auto speaker set up. The receiver sends tones to each speaker and adjusts the volume so that you get the right output on the speakers for where you are sitting in the room. Cost of unit is mid range and sound good.

Great sound and video quality. Even with older input devices. Easy to set up and calibrate. Sony remains my go to brand for audio (I still have a 1970 reel to reel TC-540 that works) and video products.

    Overheats in minutes

Sound is great. Unit Menu is kind of a pain to navigate. Overheating in minutes! Definitely will need a really good cooling fan setup! Definitely disappointed in that. There’s no internal fans in the unit. So if you’re planning on running above 40 volume for an extended period, better have a plan.

Amazon accepted return of 20 day old defective unit but charged me $74.90 more for replacement

Sony STRDH590 5.2 Channel Surround Sound Home Theater worked OK but had a dead sound port for one front speaker. After messing with it for several hours, testing to see if it was the speakers or the unit (it was the unit), and trying to reset the unit two different ways, I called the Sony hotline. None of their suggestions worked. Rather than send it back to Sony, with no idea how long that would take, I opted to return it to Amazon. So I started the return process. There was no option for an exchange. You had to return the new one, and a credit would be issued upon return. I was OK with that. But you had to re-buy the unit. This ended up costing me $70 more plus tax. Pretty crummy when you are the victim here and got a defective unit, only to get charged a lot more on re-order. Why buy Amazon in the future? If you buy local, you won’t get swindled like Amazon is doing to me. Soured on Amazon.

    Good Value Good Receiver

Somewhat biased as I have a Sony strdh 790 for my home theater. Easy to set up as I’m only using it for 2 channel cd/Amazon music listening. Actually bought as a backup to the 790 in case of a failure. All sounds fine. Low profile looks sleek and remote functions fine. For music I set it to 2 channel or direct. I would expect your home theater experience to be good based upon my use of the similar 790. It paired easily with my phone. Just be patient when connecting the speaker wires.

***Got this to go with the 5.2 Klipsch Ref Speakers***

Having an older TV that is used for both PC Monitor and regular cable; I found hooking everthing up while not having an ARC type HDMI on the older TV, I had to just go from the PC straight to the TV then select TV on the Sony A/V and the audio worked. For normal TV viewing I used the SAT/Cable input then HDMI ARC OUT to the TV. I had the PC connected to the GAME input, but could not get the PC audio instead got the SAT/Cable audio while showing the desktop screen. So I just hooked the TV up straight to the PC and now select TV and it plays audio as it should. Hooked up a TOSlink from TV to A/V but really could not tell any difference sound wise.

    I wanted to like it

I really wanted to like this receiver but after about a day or two experiencing its lack of options, I decided to return it.Reason 1: There are no visual/screen options when playing audio. (i.e. you can’t play a video game or watch TV/Cable while streaming Bluetooth.) This should be a given, as most other entry level receivers offer this feature.Reason 2: The audio delay/AV Sync sucks. Whether using an app on my TV to stream a movie using Optical out for sound or just watching Cable/Sat via HDMI, there is a constant AV sync mismatch. Although there is one option ‘ON’ which delays it 60ms or ‘OFF’ which is 0ms ; they suggest that these preset options are universal however there was a delay no matter what I selected. Nothing matched up, it was very annoying. The one positive is that the surround sound provided was great. If the 2 above reasons don’t bother you, then this is the receiver for you. For me, I went with another brand that had everything I needed.

Run everything through this on setup.

Every single thing powered down. I push the eject button on DVD player. Put it in. Close it. My receiver and my tv automatically power up and my DVD player starts playing the movie. What else you want? Sports sound great. Could have a few more listening settings. Really hard to find a fault. It bumps too. I got dat bass!!! Glad I can still get old school like this. The old cabinet 12s front speakers never die and they need power. My speakers are from 1998. I got 5 speakers. Two large front cabinets. Big center. Two small rear. A powered sub. Lots of inputs. Optical in. Just what I wanted. I also bought cooling fan system so it will last inside my media stand. Get one.

Good value if not for 1 problem that becomes too much.

This receiver is good bang for the buck. Easy enough interface for initial setup and provides quality tones from various streaming media. The receiver arrived with a faulty remote and this is where the problem is. Most functions are embedded in the controls available only with the remote and not in the receiver front panel. This became quite problematic with the initial setup which requires the use of the remote. The troubleshooting did not work and after two new sets of batteries the remote still does not communicate with the receiver. The only work around was to use the SAMSUNG TV remote as a universal remote and access the on screen menu of the receiver albeit, in a limited way.For customer service, there is a link to Sony’s website which does not list the receiver or the remote. All in all, quite a dissapointment. Apart from these frustrating issues, the receiver sounds good and works as expected for a receiver in this price range. Now, I’ll have to get a remote…

    This item is ok

Recently my amp (which I purchased years ago) stop working, causing me to purchase another. After trying the latest speaker systems I decided to try this Sony product, mainly because of the dependable name and secondly because of the price.I am more than happy with the (set) sound But, there is usually something missing. Normally, I can make the adjustments but, because the sounds are set, I could not make the needed adjustments. I gave this item four stars but having to accept that I would have to make due with this sound, I should have given it a 3 star review. I am keeping this item because I like my purchase but I recommend that Sony realize that everyones ear hears differently and a small tweak by the purchaser would give satisfaction to the point where ( my rating) would be a 5 star.

Had it almost 4 years now, and I would still give it 5 stars.

I’ve never used the bluetooth, this has always been hooked to my TV, game systems, etc via HDMI, or sometimes RCA. I’ve used several different speakers on the front channels and they’ve all sounded good. I recently added a DIY powered 300 amp subwoofer and center channel speaker for a nice upgrade in sound output. This thing just does the job and keeps on kicking. I’ve ran this thing at high volume for more than a few hours and it just doesn’t miss a beat.

    Awesome.

So I needed to replace a 40 year old Kenwood amp that is been using forever. Anyway, this guy was the best fit I could find that would support my old 2 speaker (big speakers) setup, while still allowing for future stuff like surround sound. In all it works great, and the smart features are a big plus. Just little stuff like it connecting to the TV in a smart fashion, so the volume is on sync, powes both on/off, stuff like that. Very happy with the purchase.
