    The AMD processing BEAST

This processor is an absolute BEAST at gaming and anything else you can throw at it. The processor is very easy to install on any AM5 motherboard and though it can run hot, with the appropriate cooler there are really no issues. Playing games while watching online vidoes while doing other things is no problem for this processor and Black Friday deals made the price point perfect to purchase.

    An Upgrade with a twist

I bought this CPU for a new build going from Ryzen 5 to Ryzen 9 and utilizing a pcie gen 5 m2 card and DDR5 RAM 6K MHz. And the last point is the catch, this CPU only supports 5.2K MHz. And the other catch is if you use all 4 RAM slots on the MOBO for me it goes down to 3.6K MHz. Unwittingly, I tried the XMP setting on the bios which took the RAM up to 6K MHz and the build was getting BSODs and the the bios was not fully displaying and freezing intermittently. I had to get the RAM back down to 5.2K MHz and the build is stable. So cavaet emptor with the expensive RAM cards having big memory speeds, this CPU is new as it is does not support it. But overall, I prefer this to the Rzyen 5 I had previously.

    Bad for newbie PC builders

It’s my first time building a PC, so I am bound to make mistakes. But this CPU magnifies one particular mistake to an unbelievable degree.I used too much thermal paste when I installed it. So, when I removed it to wipe off the thermal paste and try again, some of it got squished into the gap between the processor chip and the attached heat sink.I had to spend over an hour researching how to clean it up, then go to the drug store for supplies, then spend another hour rinsing it with isopropyl alcohol, scrubbing it with a toothbrush, rinsing it some more, pick at it with toothpicks, scrub it some more, pick at it some more, let it soak in the alcohol for a few minutes, blow it out with canned air, rinse and repeat.I have no way of knowing if I damaged the CPU in the process, so now I have to just install it, plug it in, and hope it doesn’t fry my motherboard and everything attached to it.Intel’s latest chip doesn’t have this problem. Why did AMD design this CPU in a way that makes this nightmare even possible?!?I imagine that if it is installed correctly, it’s a fine CPU, but this experience has me leery of buying from AMD in the future.

    Love it!

As a long time AMD customer I have always had bad luck with overheating, but that does not seem to be the case with this generation of Ryzen CPUs. I am very happy with the multitasking and gaming performance, and the fact that this thing isn’t a space heater like my FX8350 was is an added benefit.

95 is the new normal for cpus

both intel and amd new cpus are made to push it to the max hitting 95 for normal use. everybody seems to compare these to older cpus temps. ive had a 13700k 12900k and 7900x, with 360 aio 280 aio u12s nhd15, they all reach max temp 95 with barely affecting performance. theres numerous videos comparing these “high” temps with various coolers, numbers all are about the same, all have about the same performance, if your complaining about the temps you dont understand how the new cpus work

One of the best budget friendly power packing CPU’s out there!!! This thing is truly a beast! Can withstand anything you throw at it! Just of course be sure to use an AIO does like power and does heat up nicely! 😉 Would definitely recommend! This is in my current build and runs beautiful!

Even though it was DOA AMD CPUs are the best

I got this DOA but that happens from time to time But ever since I have tried AMD from intel, I have been very impressed with there products. ( IE) their CPU’s you get a lot more for the money and they kick ass I have been messing with computer since the first Vtech 286 came out built like 100 of them for family friends I will get another one in time. hopefully this one won’t be DOA

    Good enough for my needs!

This is a great CPU overall. It does everything I ask of it and more. There is only 1 drawback. It get INSANLY hot! I tried to cool it with an AIO cooler and was still getting temps of 80-95C. I had to go to a custom water-loop. (Luckily I build those for my customers) Now I get peaks under load of 60-75C. Not great but manageable. But other than the heat issue, it is a great CPU for the money!

    Runs HOT. Do not panic!

This is a very HOT running device from AMD. Read up on it and you will understand what I mean. It is BY design. It may look like you have an issue with the CPU or your cooling solution, but if you have built a couple PC’s already, this won’t be the case. CPU will WANT to run close to 80-90C when gaming and performing other intense tasks. On benchmarks it will peg at 95C. THIS IS BY DESIGN. There is nothing wrong here. New offering by AMD. I believe this is a winner with this design change.

ok cpu 7900x has up and down, boot times are slower / my old 3900x I put in my wife computer put beside each other and 3900x just boot up faster. Now 7900x is better when compared to gaming, we have about same sys as far video card 3070 ti nvdia cards their is 5% to 10% difference in fame rate, the only difference she have 128 gig 3600 memory and I have 64gig 5200 memory. The over all performance for is ok. Did need to upgrade (no) could wait. But come to video steam it great or video editing . I would still do it again

Great processor, dont go over DDR5-6000 Mhz RAM

Great for productivity and gaming. Note that I recommend not going over DDR5-6000 Mhz ram with this. I initially tried 6400 Mhz, and ran into a variety of post issues and/or crashes after booting. Eventually, I narrowed the problem down to RAM speed. Now it works flawlessly with 6000 Mhz.

    Awesome cpu

Love this cpu. That being said it does like power. As far as value for performance it’s good. I also have the 7700x which I would say is a better value for most users. It also outperforms the 7900x in many areas. All in all I am happy with this cpu. I run it in my mini NZXT h1v2 along with g skills neo 6000mhz ddr5, amd rx 7800xt, asus ROG strict b650e-I mobo all day long gaming at 55-60c Runs cool.

    Runs hot under load

Mine runs at 90C + under load with water cooling, not overclocked. Had it off and on again, several times. Everything is making contact that should be. I even put 3 120mm fans on the radiator that scream 5200rpm. Is what it is. Games run like butter. 3d printer slicing happens fast. Just the heat thing. Be prepared to not cheap the cooling.

    Very powerful and Very hot

Very powerful CPU and highly overkill at this moment. CPU heats up under load very fast and continues running very hot. It’s like running little heater near you, even after configuring CPU to work at max 75°C. Surely i would consider weaker (also cheaper) but colder CPU-es if i knew what i will get.

This was my first AMD CPU and it did not disappoint.

I originally paired this 7900X with an RTX 4080, and 64gb DDR5 6000Mhz CL36. It was a gaming powerhouse. Sure, there are some other options out there but this 12 core 24 thread 7900X is a beast. Yes it’s one of the hotter running CPU’s on the market but it’s easier to cool than a 13700k. I had a 280mm Arctic AIO cooling my 7900X and the temps are great. Temps are typically in the low 60⁰s which is very good.

So far so good two weeks in

After taking time & care to properly install and adding heatsink paste and cooling fan, it works. I’m not a heavy gamer but it has been running ok. Play a moded game that crashes a bit but not the computer. Likely background activity that the old gaming code can’t handle or some MS update window rhat wants a restart gumming up the works. I’m happy with it.

    Great value for the money!

I was trying to decide between an intel build or AMD build for my first computer. The almost savings and performance of the 7900x sold me on AMD. Easy install with the new AM5 socket and zero issues with software set up or hardware compatibility. Just do your research as this CPU only works with DDR 5 memory. I’ve been using this for gaming, and basic office work. No issues. Very happy with my purchase.

Need lots of cores but you don’t need 3D V cache? This is the chip for you.

Runs hot by design but with my setup I actually get much lower temps than most people get (80mm thick by 360mm custom loop radiator). Its great from games, rendering and editing. If your a creator who wants full fledged cores rather than P+E cores or you want a lower TDP CPU for the performance compared to Intel. You really can’t go wrong.

    Better Than I Expected

Ive never experienced such a big jump between CPUs before. I went from a Ryzen 3700x to this and wow. I can’t believe AMD has managed to make so much progress in that time. The Precision Boost Overdrive 2 is really nice. Essentially the chip can intelligently decide between running all the cores at base speed, or overclocking some of them by a significant amount. The method it uses to decide when to boost or not also makes it so if you have a really stable PSU and good cooling, you will see even better performance than you’re supposed to without needing to fiddle around in your bios. It’s essentially user friendly, smart, manufacturer approved overclocking for everyone.Good job AMD!

Great processor – but really needs 360mm AIO or better for adequate cooling

Great processor – booted first try, installed easy.Knocked an egg as they no longer bundle a cooler and don’t really recommend the correct sizing or cooling power for AIO coolers. Personally bought a 280mm AIO and it can’t keep up with the processor when running prime95. For other uses it seemed to be just fine – just couldn’t keep up with the full on cooling case.

I went from a gen 1 one I5 to this. I was way overdue for and upgrade. I cannot believe how much the tech has changed since I built my last computer for myself. This cpu is crazy fast. You can throw multiple programs at it all at once and hardly phases it. Scored over 28k in Cinebench my last system was 2300 lol. Runs hot as others stated. Idle around 50 C and full load Cinebench 90 C and average of 70 C. Definitely needs a 360 AIO, good fans, and good case to keep it cool. Couldn’t be happier with the performance. Amazing CPU.

This R9 7900X is a great CPU for all modern games and is more affordable compared to similar Intel CPUs. Capable of running most modern games over 200FPS at 2K max settings when paired with a 4070ti. Handles everything I’ve thrown at it. Highly recommend getting a water cooler (AM4/AM5 will work). Reused my cooler from an AM4 build. Runs at 95c when gaming (this is by design of the CPU) so it doubles as a space heater for the upcoming winters.

    Easily installed and very fast.

Very pleased with the performance of the build I did using this AMD 7900X CPU. Totally stable operation (i.e. air cooled with huge Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler; No overclocking, and don’t intend to). CPU temp at idle is 100 degrees F. Doesn’t get more than 120 degrees F when running X-Plane flight sim. Mounted on a ASROCK X670E Steel Legend motherboard with 32 GB of GSKILL Trident Z5 RGB DDR5 memory (F5-5600J4040C16GX2-TS5RK) in a Fractal Design Pop XL Air full tower case (has 4 X 120mm case fans) . Also installed with a 1 TB NVMe SSD and 2 additional 2 TB 2.5” SATA III SSDs. Video is MSI GeForce RTX 3060 driving Samsung 4K 27” monitor. System speed is fantastic with this setup. Boot time with Win 11 is consistently less than 20 seconds from push of the on switch to operationally ready to use. Everything run thus far yields “instantaneous” responses. Again, very pleased with the performance and stability of the CPU and the entire system.

    It good but…

It a very good cpu only issue is heat it’s cap is a bit thicker than previous generation mean its harder for aio pump to move the heat, to get best cooling I recommend 360 with fans on both sides and reason is this is the only way to keep it under 60 c while gaming on max settings at 4k, doing normal work stuff it never hits 45c, best thermal paste I found so far that holds up well is Arctic mx6 and this paste gave me the best temps so far, now if you can’t do a push pull configuration don’t freak if it hitting 70 under load this cpu runs hot but if you can’t at least get a 240 aio in your case and have good air flow I can’t recommend this product to you but if you can then its a must have, example picture attached of how you can keep it cool if you have the space for 6 120 and a radiator on top

As the AM5 CPU has no pins (the mobo now has the pins), its imperative you are gentle on the placement. Best way I found to install this shield was to place the CPU into the socket, then remove the cpu holder so this way you can’t damage the cpu or pins as they are socketed. Installing the shield from that point is easy, just don’t overtighten it. Theres a bunch of youtube videos on this process. Definitely recommend reviewing them before attempting this step.I upgraded from my old Ryzen 5 2600X system with a GTX 960 SSC 4GB card and a 512gb M.2 Gen 2 drive.Needless to say this was quite the upgrade from my old system.Cinebench scores on my 2600X even with a mild overclock was only around 7200.After getting everything configured/setup and Windows 11 Pro installed with all updates and enabling EXPO1 (RAM OC) and enabling SAM in the BIOS I started my benchmarking.Cinebench score with just EXPO1 enabled baseline was 28745. What a jump!CPU temp on the multi-core threading with the 360 AIO only went as high as 82c (AMD rates these to run at 95c as normal operating temp so it was well below even that).Haven’t done any OC’ing other than enabling EXPO1 yet since I really don’t need to as the CPU and GPU run everything maxed out.Tested on a few games on max/ultra settings and below are what I got FPS wise:The Division 2 (All settings maxed and on DX12) – Avg 125fps on 3440 x 1440 165hz resolutionAliens: Fireteam Elite – Avg 160fps on 3440 x 1440 165hz resolutionBorderlands 2 (older game I know but love to play it with max settings) – Avg 476fps on 3440 x 1440 165hz resolutionForza Horizon 5 – Ultra Settings (max) including Ray Tracing – Avg 155fps on 3440 x 1440 165hz resolutionAliens: Colonial Marines (older game) – Avg 190FPS on 3440 x 1440 165hz resolutionWarframe – Avg 155fps on 3440 x 1440 165hz resolutionPairing this CPU and GPU together worked great and the CPU itself is a beast. It does get hot when it turbo’s up into the 5ghz range which is why you need a really good cooler (either AIO or custom loop) to keep the temps in check. If you do that, this CPU will be everything you need and then some. One thing I always tell people is to take your time, plan out your PC parts you want for what you want the system to do (video editing, gaming, streaming, etc). Don’t be afraid to look around for good deals. I scored the AIO Cooler off Newegg for a much cheaper price than Amazon had it and it works beautifully and the LCD screen is just a nice “geek” factor to put JPG’s or GIF’s there.Once you have everything, take your time when building it. You may run into an issue here or there which is normal. First boot on AM5 systems is sometimes slow (Memory has to train) and you may see it cycle on/off for up to 1 minute. Mine did this and on the 4th power cycle it posted and I could get into the BIOS and everything showed up correctly.Good luck enthusiasts and hope this review helped with anyone looking at this CPU for their system! Its worth it!

Excellent, fast multitasking; needs good cooling for intense operations

Here’s my system build so that you have context: ASRock Steel Legend X670E motherboard, AMD Ryzen 9 7900X CPU, 2X32GB G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5 6400 (F5-6400J3239G32GX2-TZ5RS), EVGA RTX 3080Ti, and CPU cooler beQuiet! Dark Rock 4 Pro. The system drives dual Dell Ultrasharp 27″ 4K monitors. My goal for this system was easy yet intense multitasking and editing of very high resolution RAW photograph files. I could scarcely be more pleased with the results. The core clocks scale to system demands instantly and running multiple programs and monitor windows is effortless. Yeah, the CPU does run hotter than previous generations AMD 12-core/24-thread CPUs; but compare the thermal qualities to Intel’s CPUs in this class! My CPU heatsink, even though running only one of its two included fans, has no problems keeping the CPU under 80C, even over sustained high system loads – and that, without being annoyingly loud. Low system loads typically produce CPU core temperatures of about 45C, with a CPU fan speed of 750RPM. I have no doubt I could drop the core temps under heavy load significantly just by adding the second CPU heatsink fan. My only negative comment here is that from purchase date to order delivery required a little over two weeks. Prime used to faster.

    Excellent Processor

Destroys everything I throw at it with ease. An excellent purchase. I use it for a mix of coding (mainly in PHPStorm), vector graphics (Figma), music production (Bitwig), and gaming (Starfield, Armored Core 6, Baldurs Gate 3, Dwarf Fortress) and I’ve never been able to bring it close to 100% utilization even running multiple applications and VM’s. Mine actually stays at nice temperatures, I paired it with a Noctua NH-U12s and it’s in a Pop Air mini case with an XFX 7900xtx. While gaming it’ll hit around 78-82c, doing less intense things it can stay around 48-55c depending on ambient temperature. Given that AMD says it can run all day at 90c with no issues, my temps are excellent. I did disable boost mode and set it to clock at a stable 4.7ghz to ensure stability, it stays flat at that speed with no issues. Worth the money.

    Runs VERY Hot, but great.

Like Most Aircoolers will Struggle to handle the heat output unless properly Undervolted In the bios. But Very excellent power/Performance wise, and EVEN Undervolted, Performs VERY well.

    This CPU is amazing!

This CPU performs beautifully! I moved from a thread ripper to this 9 7900x and was immediately blown away by the frames and how smooth everything was. No lag in and out of city hubs in large MMO games. This thing is amazing. It runs around 48-56 C while idle and gaming I see mid 60s to low 70s. I stressed on cinabench and was getting in the mid 80s. I have 240mm water cooling system for it.

Great CPU but comes with caviats

I purchased this CPU in July of 2022 for $350 on sale and I have to say I do not regret my purchase at all. I would consider this CPU a great buy for anything under $400 (It’s currently going for $380). The first thing I have to say is PLEASE disable PBO and put an eco mode on this CPU. If you don’t it will scream up to 95C every second it can under any kind of moderate or heavy load no matter the cooler! After adjusting these power settings in BIOS the CPU runs very cool and will rarely even go over 60C with a Corsair 360mm radiator. With all of this reduction in temps and noise and you only lose about 2-5% of the performance! I really think the crazy overclocking applied to these CPUs out of the box is ridiculous and I strongly recommend adjusting your power settings in BIOS. This CPU unfortunately loses to the i7 13700k (And 14700k) in almost every task, but you’re not buying this CPU for its current performance, you’re buying it for the long life of the AM5 socket. This CPU may not currently be able to beat the high-end intel chips now, but a 9900X or whatever comes next in this socket sure will! AMD really has an advantage with their long-life sockets, why choose to get marooned on the LGA 1700 socket after we saw the lifespan and upgradability of AM4? It’s also funny to me that even though Intel has now gone with “efficiency cores”, Ryzen 7000 CPUs use significantly less power than their Intel counterparts under full load. I bought this CPU for heavy multitasking and production and I have not seen it hit 100% usage outside of a synthetic load. In the words of my friend who bought a 5900X and recommended me anything Ryzen 9, you can’t put these CPUs on their knees!

    What an absolute goat. Period.

I realize that a pc picture for a processor is pointless and just showing off, but isn’t everyone who gets this showing off a little lol. Anyway, the title says it all, a beast. I’ve been intel all my life, though to be fair I havent had many computers, but still, i was like amd who? lol. Even when amd surpassed intel with the x3d for gaming anyway I was like well whatever intel’s still the goat so they can have their short victory, which is unheard of for me because if there are 2 brands that are equal or even one thats close but not quite as good, ill always go with the red one(obsessive fav color), but then am5 came out, and to be clear, i wasn’t one of those fanboys who was like omg becky! amd is going to destroy intel and there’s going to be nothing they can do about it. No! quite the opposite. I knew. I knew what revolutionary technology the hybrid core design was and how great raptor lake was going to be, I knew it might even surpass amd’s new best unlike everyone else. Didn’t matter though. Because i wanted to try changing it up and switching to team red for a variety of reasons. 1. like i said cuz its red. 2. because as great as raptor is, i dont wanna be in the cycle i was in before where if i wanna upgrade a single pc part like the processor, ill have to basically build a new pc, which is what i had to do and what youll always have to do with intel usually, but amd will have upgradability on this for years new platform and all on top of the fact that amd has always been better about keeping compatible socket types for a longer time, while obviously thats not true for raptor, and even if raptor was a new platform lets not play like am5 still wouldnt be supported way longer, because it will, hell am5 will probably be supported to the end of intels next platform lol, 3. ive never once cared about power efficiency and heat, like so what, ok it draws alotta power, BUT, as long as the performance is there(lookin at you 12900/13900) and it will not throttle and be stable, awesome, do whatever you want, why limit performance for braggin rights efficiency(i know some people will cringe reading that), but anyway, while idc about it, it is a big win all the same for amd 4. 12 cores and 24 threads of pure American Muscle (jk but you get the point lol), 5. amd has become the stability platform thanks to intels new incredible but still NEW architecture 6. you get every bonus I just said and are getting like the 3rd best consumer processor in the world right now, who cares if the 13900 is technically #1 by a few percent 7. if you want both gaming performance and workstation performance, which is the main reason i upgraded, this is the way to go, best of both worlds if 16 core 32 thread or 13900k is just a bit unnecessary for you but you still want that best of both worlds, and for that reason idc what any reviews say online about it being slightly overpriced, because for all of the reasons i listed above, i disagree 8. well this is more of a counter, but, are the motherboards pretty expensive, yes, is ddr5 expensive? yes but if your building a new pc it really doesn’t matter does it because your already spending a bunch of money and you might as well pay a bit more for that amd upgradability over intel, and for those who aren’t building a totally new one, assuming you don’t wanna pay a bunch of money, if you do your research you can still get a good motherboard and ddr5 for pretty cheap OH AND AT THE TIME OF WRITING THIS I’ve been talking about the normal price, but currently the 7900 is at an INSANE DISCOUNT, LIKE CRAZY, final note: that second picture i showed was me letting hw monitor run for 30 minutes, the point is that, it does go way above 5.6 even if only in semi frequent spikes, just thought it was cool, i know practically it doesnt matter

Fast, but loses potential due to poor thermals

It is indeed much faster, more than twice as fast than any other cpus I owned before. My biggest compliant is the thermals. I tried a noctua cooler and a 240 AIO but the CPU simply boosts to 95c and stays there regardless of the cooling solution. The exhaust from the coolers don’t even feel warm, which means lost potential.
