    It works ok.

For $300 I expected more. With legs fully extended, it does kind of wobble. The head is good though. I can put my long Tamron lens on my camera, with the battery grip. I can’t do that with my other Manfrotto tripod. If I would’ve been able to try this out in a store, and compare it to another tripod, I might not have bought it.

the legs shoot right out like theres no friction

This thing is huge. with the center column extended and a ball head mounted, its almost 6 feat tall. When you release the clamps, the legs shoot right out like theres no friction. The clamps on the legs are very tight, so you never need to worry about accidentally collapsing a leg. Seriously a high quality tripod.

We love manfrotto but the legs randomly fall off. Come on- I just want to buy a quality tripod. Please fix this issue otherwise I’m going to another brand. I’ve purchased over $1500 in tripods this year alone- why would I ever balance $7000 of gear on something that the leg randomly breaks off? This has happened on 3 separate tripods. FIX THIS ISSUE please. Your tripods are strong until the leg breaks sending gear tumbling to the ground. This is unacceptable.

This Tripod does NOT include an arm so you really cannot use it to pan your camera

This Tripod was worthless to me because it does NOT include a panning arm so you really cannot pan your camera. Otherwise, it is well made and steady. But who makes a tripod without an arm? This defeats the whole purpose. I had to return it for a refund, and buy another tripod WITH a panning arm.

Solid Tripod Legs, one major flaw.

I purchased two of these legs along with two MVH502AH Fluid Video heads. I was very excited for this combo because Manfrotto is, and will continue to be one of the easiest to use and sturdiest consumer tripod brands out there. However! When I put the new tripod head on the legs I found a major flaw. There used to be 3 set screws on the tripod plate of all Manfrotto tripods, and all of the heads and legs are or at least used to be interchangeable (aside from flat plate to bowl head). Well they’ve recently redesigned all of their tripods to only have one set screw instead of 3. This would normally be fine, but they’ve also changed the diameter of where the set screw is in relation to the center screw. In fact it’s so drastic that you cannot tighten down the tripod head to the legs because of it! The set screws do not screw into their specially machined grooves, but instead dig into the metal surrounding the main head screw. It prevents it from firmly locking down and when you’re on the highest drag setting and pan from right to left it simply unscrews the tripod head from the legs. Very Frustrating!!I’ve talked with the US manfrotto office and they also witnessed the issue using the same products in their warehouse after I brought it to their attention. They also test the next two more professional sets of legs, but alas, they all had the same top plate of the legs. This is major issue for professional use.TL;DR: Well built, easy to use and manipulate, but set screw is in the wrong place and prevents tripod head mounting correctly.

Well engineered sturdy and easy to use

Most important to me as locking of the tripod legs when setting it to a specific hight. The locking mechanism is a lever rather than a thumb-type screw. It’s easy to use, fast, and reliable. The tripod is sturdy; I primarily use it with my Bushnell Spacemaster Scope. It’s a little pricey, but it does the job well.

Too quick of a quick release

This is an excellent tripod and I almost hate to give it three stars, but I’ll say that of the Manfrotto tripods I’ve used, the releases on the legs for this one stick out and are a little too easy to flip unintentionally. When I first got it, I set it up with a small DSLR and teleprompter, and had it set up by my desk. I swiveled around and my pant leg caught one of the releases and pulled it very easily and the tripod came at me. I caught it, and thankfully nothing was damaged, but I’ve been much more careful around it. If you feel like this wouldn’t be a problem for you, then get it– it is in all other ways an excellent tripod and I’ll keep buying Manfrotto.

    Loses leg tension over time

I’ve had 3 of these tripods over the last 5 years. I want to love the product but unfortunately, after vigorous use, the tension in the legs wears out over time so that the legs don’t stay open even after tightening the bolts. When it’s brand new everything is really snappy and tight but then after using them as much as I do, all the parts start to wear out. The simple bolts that are supposed to tighten to hold the tension can’t be tightened anymore. It’s really disappointing. My next tripod won’t be Manfrotto.

Leg fell off tripod on third use.

I purchased the product at the recommendation of camera I was purchasing. The camera was several thousand dollars. During the third use of the product I noticed the leg slightly bent. I moved the tripod and the leg fell to the floor. Thankfully I had a hold of the new camera and it did not fall. Since it has been just a few days since I received the product I logged on to Amazon and requested a replacement. As I move through the process I am not given the choice of an exchange. I am hoping to receive a call from the company so we can resolve this issue.11/12/16 No product follow up by the company and the issue is the same. Downgrading my rating for lack of company responsiveness.

Not too happy with the craftsmanship I must say

When it works, it works well. Unfortunately however after several months of use, one of the legs repeatedly falls off during use. I’ve tightened the leg locks and it works for now. Issue two arose last week. I’ve owned the tripod for 7 months and after a shoot last weekend, one of the legs no locks in the narrow spread position. Not too happy with the craftsmanship I must say.

Outstanding support for spotting scope at this price level.

I bought this setup to use specifically with a Vanguard Endeavor HD 82A spotting scope that I had recently purchased for birdwatching, as my prior tripod and head that I was using for a DSLR camera had proved to be painfully inadequate. The general opinion when it comes to spotting scopes is that the scope is only as good as the support that it is mounted on, and therefore, as with the scope itself, one should spend as much as one can afford on the support. After spending as much as I could afford on the scope, the $300 range was as much as I had left to afford on the support. I decided on this setup because it was made by a very reputable name and Manfrotto had specifically touted this setup as being well-suited to support a spotting scope. One interesting thing I noted prior to purchasing this kit was that with this combo, you are getting a $200 dollar tripod and a $150 dollar head (if you bought them separately). To spend almost as much on the head as you do on the tripod legs seems a bit unusual, as I’d think most of the time you spend much more on the legs, but I went with it anyways. I figured in my case with the intent to use it for a large spotting scope, getting a more premium head (especially a fluid head designed for smooth panning) could be very advantageous. After using the scope several times, I’d say that analysis was spot on. The 190X tripod legs are rock solid and can be setup very quickly with the design of the clamps. The legs are long enough that I really don’t ever need to raise the center mast to get the eyepiece up to a comfortable height (I’m 5 foot 11 inches tall), which is important because as soon as you raise the center mast on any tripod, the stability goes down in a hurry. The legs are a little weighty, but spending $300 more to get carbon fiber legs and lose a couple pounds was not an option to me, and they are not heavy to the point where it is an issue to me. I wouldn’t expect the weight difference to be an issue for anyone other than someone hiking long distances with the whole setup. If I need to move the scope while attached to the support, it is still plenty light to just pick it up and walk with it a short ways, especially since Manfrotto gives you nice thick rubber grips on two of the legs to get a good grasp on the whole thing. As for the XPro fluid head, I’m thrilled thus far. As I said, I’m very pleased that I ended up with a more premium head from this kit than I would have picked out on my own had I bought separately. The head is outstanding for use with a spotting scope. This head pans so smoothly and controllably that I can leave the scope zoomed in at the full 60x magnification and slowly pan it to scan a shoreline of a lake or river to look for waterfowl or a treeline to look for perched raptors. At this extreme magnification, I was shocked at how smooth the panning still is. The quick-release plate is very sturdy and has two release mechanisms to prevent ever accidentally releasing. The main lever was a little hard to work until I sort of got the hang of it, but I’m glad that it is so sturdy, as I’m trying to support a 4+ pound scope. I consider the ability to pan at 60x the first extreme test of the quality of the head. The second push-to-the-limit test that I can report on is how it performed with a digiscoping adapter attaching the scope eyepiece to a DSLR camera. Once the camera is attached, the entire scope/camera assembly weighs about 6 pounds, and not just 6 pounds, but 6 severely cantilevered off-centered pounds. The camera extends the whole contraption to about 10-12 inches over the back edge of the fluid head. So the test of the head for this application was whether it could hold the field of view steady when locked down with all that weight hanging off the back end. I tried it at 60x magnification to put it to the ultimate test and, as expected, when locked down on a target, after removing my hands from the camera, the back end dropped just slightly and the field of view raised up a bit. But even at 60x, even with all that weight sticking out over the back, the scope only raised up about a third the width of the field of view. Therefore I could still easily compensate for this and take pictures through the scope at max magnification. If you have never seen a digiscoping assembly before, it looks a bit ridiculous, so to think that this head at this price point can support that so well is pretty impressive. Furthermore, I actually was able to pan the full digiscoping assembly at 60x magnification while looking through the camera and it was still steady enough to find the targets. On the negative side, I wish Manfrotto would give you a carrying bag with these. They do sell padded and unpadded bags of various sizes that are a bit pricey, but I wish they would at least throw in a basic bag with the support. In summary, the whole setup has performed fabulously with a large spotting scope and wasn’t even overwhelmed by a weighty and awkward digiscoping assembly. Of course if you go out and spend $800-$1000 on a support from any manufacturer you will (probably) outperform this, but at this price point, this kit might be the best you can do anywhere. Manfrotto was right in touting this as a suitable kit for a spotting scope. In trying to “spend as much as you can afford” for a support, I’d highly recommend at least stretching to get to this price level, because if you can, you will be rewarded with a very quality setup.

    Pricey…but worth every penny!

I’ve heard about Manfrotto’s gear for years but could never afford it before now. I always looked for the cheaper alternative. No longer. This tripod and fluid head setup is the perfect combination. No more earthquakes are invading my kids’ football or soccer games! I needed a smoother head for filming my son’s high school football games, along with a taller tripod, and this setup fits that need exactly. The tripod is solid and has some weight to it but to have a solid recording you need a solid base. This tripod and head gives you that base. And the head is so smooth, that both Jif and Skippy are jealous!!! In every direction, the head flawlessly turns and rotates without any suttering or hiccups. I am about 5’9” and with the tripod fully extended and head attached, and with a smaller camcorder attached (I use a canon VIXIA HF G21 on it), it is at a perfect height so you aren’t straining up or down to look into your camcorder or camera.I completely recommend this tripod and head combination. I don’t know if the rest of their lineup is this tasty, but I can assure you that this package will give you everything you want out of a tripod and head.I only wish that a case or bag came with it. At this price, they could throw in at least something to carry and protect this amazing setup. I had to purchase one separately (I bought the 75cm Manfrotto bag). You will have enough room in the bag to leave the head attached, along with a remote controller attached to the pan bar in that bag. (It’s well worth the investment to get a bag to protect your tripod and head…especially this one.)Do yourself, and your filming, a favor and get this setup. You will love breaking out this bad boy for every event that your wife wants you to film. It’s that good!!!

I use a large and heavy scope, a Vortex Viper 20-60x-85mm. This tripod is the perfect fit. For about two months prior to purchasing this, I used two different tripod/ head setups. First I used a rental from a local photo shop. I do not recall the make and model, but it was aluminum, had two extensions, and it had a three way head. It got the job done, but the head was annoying to use. I next borrowed a Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod with 502HD Fluid Head Hybrid Video Kit. While the tripod was excellent, the head was again not what I needed since the head cannot be locked off easily. I used a Manfrotto ball head with that tripod one time, and I realized that should never be done. I cannot emphasize enough how poorly a ball head performs with a heavy spotting scope.I purchased this tripod head combination to use solely for supporting my spotting scope. After several months of regular use, I confidently give it five stars. The pros of this: the head is PERFECT for use with a tripod. It is a two way head with ability to adjust resistance. This makes panning along shores quickly easy. Then the resistance can be increased to follow a bird once it has been spotted. The handle location can be adjusted to your liking. When I am walking with the tripod, I fold the legs up, lock down all the moving parts on the head, and throw the whole rig over my shoulder. There is no real padding on the tripod, so I bought irrigation pipe insulation from Home Depot to serve as padding on each of the legs. This works great. The tripod is easy to adjust. There are few extensions to deal with. It holds the image stable. I have never once been bothered by vibrations caused by instability. The tripod is fairly light for an aluminum model. It is lighter than the other tripods I borrowed or rented. Considering my scope is so heavy, the weight of the tripod has not been an issue I have considered much.I would highly recommend this setup for anyone looking to pair this with a spotting scope. I cannot speak to its versatility. I have not mounted anything else on this rig. This is the pair to buy for nature watching.

    Quality

I am coming from an Amazon Basics tripod, so it wouldn’t take much for an upgrade, but this thing is smooooothhh. You have to play with the knobs a bit to get the right drag on this with no hiccups but once you do, it’s like butter. The legs and tripod head are made of quality materials. There’s very little of this that feels plasticy. The snaps for the legs are very sturdy. Now for the two downsides. It doesn’t come with a bag if you can believe that. For the price, you would think throwing in a simple bag with a strap would be a no brainer. Apparently not. The second is a good thing and a bad thing… weight. This can make it sturdy but it also makes it a pain to lug around if you are doing more than just popping it out and setting up for a few shots. Overall, I love it! I absolutely think it was a good buy.

Good blend of stability and light weight

Excellent tripod! The Fluid head is a real, tangible, asset and easy to engage. Lever (E) on my tripod [not to be confused with the friction collar on the head, also listed as (E)] snugs down any movement of the column completely. This tripod is almost the equal in stability to my old Bogen 3030/a tripod with the Bogen 3063 Head, at less than half the weight. When you are already packing a heavy Tamrac bag with a pro-level DSLR, motor drive, and 7 lenses, any savings in weight is greatly appreciated.

    Durable

This tripod works great, it’s durable and wasn’t to expensive. I use it for a lot of turkey hunting and deer hunting from ground blinds. It’s easy to level and holds my 7D mark II with some big telephoto lenses steady as a rock. The only down fall is it does get a little heavy after carrying it all day.

    Big and Beefy

This is not a compact nor lightweight tripod but rather a very solid and heavy duty one. Suitable for even the largest cameras it should do well with everything short of the huge professional video cameras. The two padded sections are a nice touch making the tripod kinder in cold weather. I have always liked the speed of the lever type leg locks rather than the ones the require you to loosen a ring collar. The ball head is easy to adjust and is faster than the standard handle type head. It does lock very firmly when needed. The quick release mount is nice quality steel and uses a folding loop which can be tightened or loosened with fingers. The only thing it lacks is a bubble level.

    Quality Manfrotto Product.

I’ve had some time to put this tripod and head combo to the test with a recent short film project and and works very well in many scenarios. One of the advantages of having this style of leg as opposed to a triple extending leg is being able to reach and manuver confined spaces. The added ability of the legs to move to 90 degree angle is also beneficial in small areas or when placed on the ground for use as a high-hat.The head is also quality. While it’s tilt range is limited by an oddly placed pan locking knob, it still provides fluid motion for most camera needs and is well balanced with quick adjustment knobs for longer lenses. It’s lightweight style is great for the dslr camera on the move that needs something that can hold a heavy lense if necessary, but also remain nimble and portable when conditions change.Manfroto is quality durable brand with a decent warranty on their products. You’d be hard pressed to find a better tripod in this style with the same quality.

One Leg Broke & The Film Head is Tricky to Use

Overview: The tripod was delivered on time and packaged like new. One leg broke on the second day of use and they returned it for the cost of delivery. I’m not sure if I got a lemon or if this particular tripod has fragile legs.About the film head: The film head looks and feels good but it’s too hard to use. I would investigate a rail system, an electronic system, or a film head with smoother tracking.About the legs: The legs are lightweight and very easy to use (if they don’t break). The snap system allows for much quicker setup and breakdown than some other legs I’ve tried.About the ball head: This tripod didn’t come with a ball head, so I bought one separately for about $130 from another supplier. In my opinion the ball head is mandatory for shooting stills and working quickly in the field. The ball head works really well for landscapes (not so much for vertical format) but it’s not included with this tripod. For landscape stills: I would recommend the legs and ball head from another supplier. For video: Keep shopping around. If you shoot a lot, you’re going to want something smoother or automated. If you don’t, then the learning curve for this film head might drive you crazy.Hope this helps. 🙂

    Dishonest

I’m a guide in Yellowstone and bought this to support my $4,000 spotting scope. I bought the fluid pan head and this base and it came with a rebate program of 199 which they did not honor at all. These products are too important to my livelihood to have that kind of company energy connected to them I will never own another manfrotto product in my life.
