Great Quality! Must have for next level photos and video

Thus lense is the next level you need! Bokeh is amazing, and it’s a nice to be able to go to an event and still get great quality pictures from a distance at 200mm.

    Worth every single cent, phenomenal

I knew this would be my favorite lens once I bought it but HOLY **** did it still amaze me. This lens lives happily on my camera for almost everything I shoot at this point. It’s ridiculously fast, sharp, and everything about it just feels perfect. The only thing I don’t like about it is that I waited as long as I did to buy it.

    Best of RF Trinity Lenses

This is by far my favorite of the trinity of Canons RF lenses! Auto focus is extremely fast and at f 2.8 the bokeh and compression is unbeatable! It also isn’t very heavy to carry around and most likely will be the most used out of the three lenses in my kit.

    Smaller and lighter

The EF 70-200 2.8 has been my go to and I always use it when out hiking, but it was so big and heavy. As you can see from my photos, the RF is much smaller and lighter than the EF version and doesn’t need the adapter.

    A Cadillac lens

The hardest part for me was spending so much money on a lens, however I do realize that you get what you pay for. Overall I’m impressed with the quality and the functionality of this lens. I’ve only had a couple of weeks and haven’t been disappointed at all. I look forward to this spring, summer and fall and really putting it to good use.

Didn’t live up to the hype

I have a Canon RP, and I was super excited to use this lens. But the quality did not live up to the hype. Manual focusing had a very tiny threshold of clear but it still didn’t seem very sharp. And auto focus would catch the eye, but when you zoom in, it’s just blurry and not sharp at all. Going to return it and stick with my 85mm, I mostly do portraits and car photos. Pretty disappointed in the quality, from the videos I’ve seen online, must just be advertising..

    Beautiful images.

There’s something about the images that are taken with this lens that’s hard to place, but you can tell you’re dealing with quality. The lens is great. What can I say?

    One of the best

I didn’t want to like this lens as much as I do (because $$!). This focal range is my favorite and my go-to for just about everything. I’ve owned both Canon and Tamron EF, and for a long time my preference was my Tamron. At almost 1/3 the price, it was hard to beat. Plus I preferred the low key black color, over the white which is an attention grabber. But when the AF started acting up on my Tamron I had to do something, and I bit the bullet and ordered this one.Selling point for me is the AF. So sharp, so quick. I typically use eye AF/servo with people, and shoot double/triple what I need to, as I’m fussy about focus and felt like I missed a lot. Past couple of shoots with this lens my fail rate was maybe 5-10% and I’m photographing candid and unpredictable things, so its to be expected. One issue, which is why 4 stars. While this lens is significantly shorter than the others, weight is about the same. It also feels a small bit wider, making it a lot to handhold (and I’ve got fairly large hands for a girl). I feel like if you had really small hands this might be a lot to deal with.Paired with the Canon R5 this lens performs amazingly, so much so I plan to switch my entire system over to all RF lenses over time. If anyone wants to buy a kidney…. 😉

    Awesome lens

Nice compact size. My new favorite go to lens. The f 2.8 allows to shoot in low lighting if needed. Great for quick movement shots.

Not as good as the EF Version

This is from the standpoint of a professional wedding photographer. There’s a lot left to be desired with this lens. I love the compact size, but it works against itself. The EF version felt a lot smoother to zoom, and the material felt much better. There’s no way I’d give up my EF Version for this. The zooming tube effect seems to be a nightmare in sandy situations, and sadly, this feels just as heavy, if not oddly heavier than the ef version in a real life application. The lack of weight causes some balance issues, and a Canon R6 attached to this lens cannot stand on its own on the lens stand. It will tilt back towards the R6. This tells me that Canon didn’t consider the center of mass of this lens, and when wielding it, it shows. It’s awkward and things are placed in strange places for hands of all sizes. The AF seemed to be on par with other RF lenses, though It did miss focus more than I expected (albeit in a somewhat dark test environment. and the picture quality seemed comparable to the EF Version, though perhaps slightly softer. For Professional wedding work, in my opinion: Skip this one until Canon makes some major design changes. There are certainly other applications where this lens will bee great, but none for my use case, sadly.

Amazing lens that is always in my backpack. The quality of the images produced is simply excellent. I had the F4 version but it can’t compare with this 2.8 at all. Heavy lens but worth to keep on any travels.

The Dream Telephoto Zoom Lens (Almost… see edit)

The media could not be loaded.

EDIT: 1/8/2020So Canon released firmware update 1.0.6 and I just updated my lens. In my unscientific test shots I can confirm that the front focusing issue is indeed fixed. Funny thing since using it, I never in real world use shot MFD at 200mm. Well it’s nice to know it fixed though and big props to Canon for addressing it in short order. Also you will be happy to know that I put it through slightly harsher environments and the lens was fine. Took it out in the rain and some dustier locations and no issues. So back to 5 stars you go.EDIT: 12/3/2019Okay, so it came to my attention that some others were having issues with this lens front focusing when shooting wide open and a minimum focus distance. I decided to test it myself. I shot a small figure that has several towers on it. I aimed it at one particular tower in the back. Sure enough, the tower slightly in front appears sharper. Others have done far more scientific tests using a target card and indicating that the lens front focuses by about 3mm. It’s so minute but it’s right there… repeatable every time. Knowing that, I’ve docked it from a perfect 5 stars to 3 as that’s obviously a flaw for something so premium. I mean it’s a very unique case shooting wide open and MFD so it still works in most other cases, it’s just that if you need to hit focus on a razor thin DOF from up close, you need to use manual focus. I’m optimistic that a fix is on the way though as it seems like Canon service centers are aware of this since I know of others having sent there lenses off and the issue is seemingly universal and consistently reproduceable. That bodes well for hopefully a firmware update to universally rectify the front focusing issue. Be happy to add the stars back once it gets fixed.Original:I preordered it and I just received this today, so this will be my initial thoughts on the lens. As I progressively use it, I’ll provide updates. Not a photographer by profession, but love photography and videography. So I am a hybrid shooter who does equal parts photos and videos. In the few hours that I’ve had this lens, I’m completely floored.BuildI have never owned an EF 70-200 f2.8L so couldn’t tell you how they stack up. I do know that it is lighter than the EF variant, and the big kicker is that it turns into a short little stubby lens at 70mm. I know many who elect to leave the EF version at home because of the size and weight. This will be lighter in the hands and more importantly, at it’s smallest it will take less room in your camera bag. When fully extended to 200mm it’s about the same length as the EF version. It feels solid in the hand, and the ergonomics are familiar. The focus and zoom rings feel smooth and nice. The control ring is both too tight and loud for me. If shooting video, turning the control ring will cause camera shake, and a mic will pick up the clicks. I’ve sent my other lenses to get declicked. If they come back and solve these issues I may send this guy for the modification as well. Some are concerned about this lens extending as opposed to being a fixed lens like the EF version since there may be a propensity for sucking in dust. They do say it’s weather sealed, but I will need more time with this lens before I can report on if there are any issues with an extending zoom. I do not beat up my lenses too much, don’t shoot in extremely harsh environments. Maybe the worst place will be a windy beach with fine sand. Will report if I have any issues. The lens hood is cool. I don’t know why, but I like how it matches the lens. I think the EF versions have a black hood, this one is white and looks cool, lol. It has a sliding window that opens so you can reach circular polarizers or variable ND filters.Auto FocusWow! Totally blown away by this. I do have the latest EOS R 1.4 firmware at the time of writing this review and the autofocus is super snappy. Something about the RF system where I feel like I’m hitting focus so much more of the time. My other camera is a 5D Mk IV and I swear I’m nailing focus more often with the R and RF lenses. This lens is no exception. The other thing that blows my mind, is how ridiculously silent the focus is. I literally cannot hear it… at all! Well, if there is some ambient noise, you cannot hear it. In an absolutely silent environment, you can hear the faint clicking if you put it close to your head. It does have a double motor USM system which I believe is a first for Canon and if that’s the reason for it’s silence I’m impressed! For comparison, the RF 50 has a little noise. The RF 24-70 a little quieter. In a little ambient noise this lens is dead silent.Image QualityI originally was not going to buy an EOS R. I was waiting for the “pro” variant. I always knew I was going to get into the system because the RF lenses are almost guaranteed to give you amazing image quality. Two things changed. The RF lens line started to fill out, and the EOS R price dropped. So here I am. Could not resist the sweet RF glass. I mean I set the bar pretty high with my expectations. All I can say is I haven’t been let down. The photos I’ve taken are random things around the house, but the detail, edge to edge sharpness, color rendering, smooth bokeh and lack of distortion are all top notch. Telephoto is my favorite type of focal length, and this pretty much is the dream lens. For comparison, I have a 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 and a 100mm f2.0 IS Macro. Image quality blows my non-L EF lens out of the water. Many say the 100mm is one of the sharpest lenses. With the few shots I got, I think this is right there with the Macro.Low LightJust quickly did a few tests. As long as there’s just enough light on a subject, the AF is just as snappy as it is during the day. I lock my ISO off at 6400, and to my eyes, noise level is great. The f2.8 aperture and three levels of stabilization really help. Speaking of…Image StabilizationOkay, so there are three levels. I’m not sure if I’m using them properly. Apparently Level 1 is for a single shot. Level 2 is for panning. And level 3, which only activates during exposure. For video it works amazing. Look at the two videos of the bird on a wire to see the difference. (Edit: Could only upload one video, will make a composite at a future update.) Night shots were great too. I didn’t stop exposure down too much, but still, the night shots are crazy sharp.VideoVideo quality is great. I already alluded to some of the pros and cons. Focus motor is super quiet so won’t be picked up on a microphone. The focus pulling was razor quick. As seen on the sample video. I did not mess with the settings on the Camera but I believe these can be slowed down so you get a smoother focus pull. The control ring is unusable during shooting. It is both too loud and too tight. If you don’t plan to get it declicked, it’s use is best for pre-shot adjustments to ISO, exposure compensation or whatever. At least you’ll be less likely to accidentally change settings.SamplesThese are straight out of camera JPG’s and MP4’s. Yes Canon Color science is real. Unfortunately I guess I can only upload one video, so it’s the bird on a wire with Image Stabilization.ConclusionI presume this will be a staple for pro wedding photographers, sports photographers, wildlife photographers who buy into the RF system. They will likely appreciate the new lighter smaller form factor. But really, I believe anyone with the funds to afford this will enjoy it. The cost is certainly expensive, but I do think it is worth every penny. It’s just that much of an upgrade in handling and being able to nail focus a greater percentage of the time. Keep in mind, this is me using it for all of a couple hours. It’s just handling it, I could immediately tell that put through it’s paces it will perform.

My goto lens all the time

It took me sometime to make the call to purchase this. I used to have the EF 70-200 mark 2 lens. Had for more than 5 years. Nothing wrong with the old one. Just upgrading the gear to new RF technology and i dont regret a bit after the purchase. Good lens, Sharp and fast.

    Solid, compact professional lens

This is the first 70-200 2.8 I have owned so I can’t comapre it to the EF version. The size and weight are mostly easy to handle. Most of the bulk comes from the huge lens shade, even reversed over the barrel, when packing it into a bag.Image quality and stabilization are excellent. Compared to my 24-104 F4 L, this lens has better contrast and color and it is of course very sharp. I expect it to last a long time.

I have a hard time taking this lens off of my camera…

After much use and many outings on my R5, R6, and R7 bodies, this lens is still blowing me away. The IS, IQ, and portability of this lens make me smile. I am coming from an EF version with adapter and that rig was so much longer and harder to carry. This one is almost like cheating. There is not a single “con” that I can think of for this lens, unless you count the price, but in the end, it is so worth the investment if you are serious about photography. For me, the IQ is just a little bit better than the EF version. The size is way better and the lack of an adapter is just divine. I have quite a few solid lenses but this one stays in my bag or on one of my bodies all the time.

Great Lens – Pricey but Worth It!

Bought this lens to pair with a Canon R6 – as to be expected from a Canon L series lens, this lens provides excellent image quality. The 70-200 F2.8 is outstanding for a wide range of photography uses – sports, portraits – just about any use. This lens rarely leaves my camera body. Having had experience with the EF 70-200 F2.8, the RF version is lighter, and has better over all performance.

    What more could you want?

Well maybe an internal zoom. But the sacrifices made in weight and size for a lens that still has plenty of both make me think that this compromise really isn’t much of a compromise at all and might just be the best of both worlds.I did some decent research to see if anyone had been experiencing issues with the weather sealing due to the external zoom and found nothing concerning. I have to imagine that canon engineers had to find the sealing satisfactory in testing also. Not much to say about the image quality. It’s the best you can possibly get along these focal lengths. Maybe if you’re a studio portrait photographer exclusively and you already have a 50 1.2 you might just get an 85 1.2 and say “that’s enough – I don’t need the compression at 200mm”But for pretty much everyone else the versatility of this zoom simply can’t be beat and you’re not sacrificing any meaningful amount of image quality in my opinion. You’re just sacrificing that special look that you get from 1.2, but god have mercy on the arms of a person who wants to carry a 2.0 or 1.2 zoom in this focal range.Image stabilization is also very good. I’m somewhat cheating since I’m using a body with IBIS, but this lens is very hand holdable. I think the only reason you’d want a tripod/monopod is for long sessions like a sporting event or a portrait session. For run and gun stuff outside of a studio I wouldn’t even think about using the tripod collar.

    Investment

This is such a great investment. The focus on it has been amazing. The f/2.8 is so worth it, 70-200mm gets the job done. I use it mainly for sports photography right now, couple examples of my work+ photo of it in action. If you’re debating on this or f/4, get this one.

I love love. Absolutely love this lens!

These are my first photos using it. I love it. The quality is immaculate the only thing that I didn’t like was the lack of safety receiving my lens. There was no bubble wrap. It was just a Canon box inside of the Amazon box. Nothing else so the box was moving around with no protection inside.

    It’s SHARP

I’ve used all of the Canon 70-200s and have always been impressed. This lens is on another level. I use it with an R6, the lowlight performance is incredible, and it is the sharpest lens I have ever used, period. Expensive, but I got it for $2,299 which is only about $200 more than the EF III version.

A must have if you own a Canon R5!

I have had a Canon 70 – 200mm lens for many years to go with my Canon 5D Mark II, III, & IV, upgrading to the new one each and every time as soon as it came out.The Canon 70-200 lens is a must with any camera! It gives you some of the best photos of any lens, and you have the flexibility of zoom.So obviously, since I purchased the Canon R5, the new RF Canon 70 – 200mm was right there with it!If you do not have this lens yet, you should!

Best lens I have ever owned!

I hesitated to get a 70-200mm for years because they were so big and heavy! This lens is about as perfect a lens as I could have hoped for for this focal range. In addition to being more compact it has exceptional build quality, is sharp, well stabilized, and has a very fast and accurate auto focus system!I am using it with my EOS R5 and absolutely love it!About the only thing I did not like was the price but it is reasonable for this level of quality.

    My favorite lens!

This lens is truly in a class by itself. I wouldn’t have considered getting the EF version of the 70-200 as a portrait and fashion photographer due to the bulk and weight of that lens although it produces beautiful images. The RF version of the lens is everything I wanted for my first RF Lens: it is compact (fits in any camera bag), tack sharp, versatile, and the images are simply stunning. I am so very happy with this purchase and paired with my Canon R5 , it is incredible. I feel so lucky to own this lens 🙂

Not in love, but it does it’s job.

I wanted to love this lens, it’s definitely nice to handle when compared to the EF version. The picture quality doesn’t seem to be there for me though. The images are harder to edit to match my other lenses. They are more flat, coloring is off, and yes same settings! I use it only when needed for events like weddings. I don’t hate it but I don’t love it.

Outstanding Lens But No Lens Hood

This is an outstanding lens in every respect. I get some of the best, sharpest images ever with this lens. I love it. However, it did not come with a lens hood. I had to add a lens hood from another lens when using this. Other than that, I really do love this lens.

Super sharp, compact, versatile, and … great tactile feeling

It feels like a significant improvement vs the EF equivalent. Not in the position to scientifically compare the two lenses, but overall impression – and feedback from other competent photographer – is that this lens deliver super sharp images even at f 2.8.The 5-stop image stabilization another plus means setting the shutter speed at almost embarrassing values (1/20) with a focal length of 150+mm, delivering sharp images.Side benefits – often mentioned at the very beginning of a technical review – are size and weight. Much more compact and lighter than the EF counterpart, it makes easier, simpler and more pleasant to shoot for long periods.

    Best 70-200 on the market.

Sharpness and clarity on both the R and RP are phenomenal. This is the best 70-200 on the market. That is before we talk about how light and portable it is compared to its EF mount older brother. If you carry it for some detail street photograph you won’t necessarily fail the awkwardly large lens test unless you have the barrel fully extended at all times and carry the gigantic lens hood. Zoom ring travel is slight greater then the mk2 and mk3 EF versions but a perfectly acceptable trade off considering this lens is not even 2/3 as long.

    fantastic lens

I own a Tamron 70-200 2.8 vs 1 which in of itself is a awesome lens but this RF lens is amazing… the stabilization within the lens works great with My R5. It’s a purchase I can’t complain about. Amazon shipped it quickly and the driver actually waited for me unlike the FedEx driver who left my 3000.00 100-500 lens on the porch and drove away

    Great Quality

Great lens and is light in weight compared to the old version but I have an issue with how far you have to turn the zoom to go from 70-200. The old 70-200 had a much shorter turn. I shoot a lot of sports and it is a workout sometimes.

    Underwhelmed

I was so ready to be in love with this lens. My EF 70-200 2.8 III is my favorite lens for amazing compression and is a workhorse. I switched to mirrorless last year and have been using my EF with an adapter, and decided this spring I’d transition to RF to make life just a little easier. While this lens is fast, with great focus, and worked well in low light, the images were FLAT. I had to spend way more time adding vibrance and saturation to the images to make them match the images that were taken with my 28-70 2.0. It’s almost heartbreaking to drop nearly $3,000 for meh photos. I fully expected this to do better, not worse than my EF lens. I’ll be returning it and continuing to use my adapter wit my EF -heavier, longer and beast of a lens.

    Great lens… very sharp.

This is such a clean lens. It comes through super sharp and I can not see any vignetting. It works seamlessly with the Canon R6, the auto focus is fantastic. It is heavy, and super thick/wide. Reminds me of the old 50L 1.2, when it is ON my camera sadly I can no longer use my Lower Slingshot 100 because it can’t zip up. I can still use the case if I remove the lens from the camera but that isn’t fun, so now I’m hunting for a new small-ish bag it can be on camera and fit.My first copy of the lens from amazon had a small issue, when I extended it some of the weather sealing rubbery string was coming out a bit sticking out 1″. Return and replace from amazon is super easy so I did that and my second copy is perfect and I noticed immediately that zooming it was easier.Worked super fast with great focus to catch moving dogs and kids that are always the hardest to shoot. Excited to use it for sports shooting. Attached some example shots.

    Awesome Lens

This is an awesome lens and every bit as sharp as the reviews stipulate. I own the EF-70-200mm f2.8 II and is a sharp lens as well if not side by side to this one. After sampling the quality of the pictures this lens actually blow it away with sharpness. Both is fast focusing. This lens works perfect with the Canon R5 with eye detection for people and animals. It is also light enough to take with you most of the time without worrying about the weight. You will find yourself picking up this lens more often when you go out shooting. I am so happy I saved to get this lens and for sure will be around for a long time because I cannot think of any future lens in this class will out perform it.

    Canon RF 70-200 f2.8

I have the EF 70-200 f2.8 which is a large and heavy. I had an opportunity to try the RF 70-200 f2.8 and wow, lightweight and compact. Easily a daily carry around lens. Naturally I had to buy it, it’s everything I expected.

    The best.

Absolutely superb. A professional lens w/ professional attributes: fast, accurate, light weight, small form factor. A pleasant experience coming from an EOS version II. It takes some more twisting action to get from 70mm about to 200mm than the EOS version, so that takes a little getting used to. Just going by muscle memory, I found myself at ~160mm the first few time I was using it. It should be in everyones camera bag.

    Not all that …

First and foremost, this lens is noticeably soft at f2.8, right where I want to use it 90% of the time.2nd big negative is the > 90 degrees of ring rotation required to go from 70 to 200 mm. The diameter of the ring and that additional rotation really hurt in fast paced shooting.3 – For now, I have the Control Ring on the lens set for exposure compensation. I’m run and gunning and changed from 24-70 to 70-200, which means I have to remember and contradict muscle memory because on the 24-70 (as with most) the Control ring place at the end of the lens away from the body, but the 70-200 it is tight up against the body. Just plain poor design!4 – The tripod collar is a piece of junk. Stiff. Under engineered. No removable foot.I would MUCH rather use the internal zoom EF, but alas, adapted, it becomes something of an AF snail.I’m hoping for much better in the future, Canon, but for now, RF gear is all going back.

    Simply amazing.

The good: Picture quality is unmatched and the build quality is excellent. The auto focus is great especially when paired with tracking options like eye auto focus. The bad: Weight and price. This lens is heavy and for my petite parter very tough to use for a long period of time. This lens is also an investment for more serious hobbiest and professional shooters. The summary: Best quality images with minimal to no chromatic aberration and snappy auto focus at all distances. Highly recommended.

    Great lens, worth every penny

This is a great lens. It is everything we have learned to expect from Rf L lens. Very high quality images. Fast auto focus, well balanced. And it is short and light. With 5 stops of IS I’m able to shoot wide open with a shutter speed of 200 and the pictures look great.
