    This is the one…

This review is for the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S.Preamble: When buying this lens through Amazon, be sure to check which seller you purchase from. If you want a Canadian warranty, be sure to buy from a Nikon-Canada authorized reseller.Having had the F-mount version of this lens as well as the Z 24-70 f/4 S and the Z 24-200mm VR lenses, I have to say: This one trumps them all in the metrics that mean the most to me.- Compared to the F mount version, this lens is sharper and lighter; on a Z body, no FTZ adapter is needed.- Compared to the Z 24-70 f/4 S, the Z 24-120 is only a bit bigger but offers higher magnification at close focus, a less restrictive focal range and doesn’t require being extended before use. The Z 24-70 is nonetheless an equally superb f/4 optic.- Compared to the Z 24-200mm VR, the Z 24-120 S is measurably sharper across the range, not a lot heavier (but somewhat bigger, yes) and has its f/4 constant aperture. While the 24-200 has VR, you need VR with a lens that is already at f/5.6 by 50mm: While the 24-200 is more compact, I prefer the only slightly heavier Z 24-120 for its closer focus, tremendous sharpness and f/4 aperture throughout the range.- I can pair the 24-120 with a 100-400 and be on my way for a nature hike.- I can pair it with a 180-600 for a two-lens wildlife adventure.- I can pair it with a 70-200 or, my preference, the 70-180, for event photography.- Add a UWA lens to the 24-120 for a useful 2 lens travel kit.The only thing it doesn’t do is f/2.8 so, if that’s needed, then this isn’t the lens! lolOtherwise, what you’ve read in the reviews about the Z 24-120 S is true. It’s sharp. It’s reasonably compact and lightweight for what it offers. Combined with a body with IBIS, it is useful in a broad range of ambient light. It offers useful close focus. It’s a lens that just helps. It isn’t a fast prime lens but you can buy those. For everything else, this is, IMO, a foundation lens worth considering. Recommended accordingly.

    Very good

Well balanced and not too heavy on a Nikon Z5. Optically very good. Great walk around lens. Not a very fast aperture but image is close to perfect wide open.

    Outstanding lens

What an amazing lens. I’ve already shot 3 outdoor events, a portrait shoot and many landscape shots. I’ve tried to put it through its paces and so far has come out strong. The autofocus is extremely fast and quiet and I have had no issues with eye detection. It grabs the eyes of my subject and holds right to it.I definitely recommend this 24-120mm f4 lens from Nikon. Next will be the 100-400mm

    NO Lens Case

Great lens but for glass that’s over $1,000 it really should come with a lens case, not a towel to wrap it in. Very disappointed in Nikon for cheaping out on this.

Package was dropped in it’s own box (no additional packaging. All seals were broken (the box was actually unsealed). I purchased a NEW lense , and a used one was definitely delivered. No explanation. Absolutely no excuse for this type of deceitful sale tacktics.

The best lens for every Nikon user

I’ve had this lens for a few months now and I’ve barely taken it off. The range of this lens is awesome and it’s very sharp. You won’t find this lens ever on sale and I looked and they aren’t available in used either. That’s probably because it’s the most popular lens Nikon makes. There’s never a bad review on it and it seems like half of the pictures posted are with this lens. I know the 24-200 is a very popular 1st lens ( that’s what I did ) and I wished I had gotten this one instead. The extra range in the 24-200 is usually blurry. This is the best all-purpose -carry-around lens that most Nikon users should have.

Beautiful lens, poor packaging by Amazon

For those that have a Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70 F/4 S lens and are looking to upgrade, I would highly recommend it. I myself have upgraded from that lens and the versatility of the new 50mm on the telephoto lens is great. The lens is just as sharp in the center @24mm and @ F4, but tends to be a little softer in the corners at the same focal length. It does sharpen up quite a bit when you stop down to F/8. The build quality is solid, and is only slightly longer/heavier than the 24-70 F/4.The only thing that I wish could be improved, is not the lens itself, but the delivery. This fragile lens did not come in a cardboard box, but only a cheap plastic wrapper! I was shocked because for something that is $1k, it should clearly be more protected. Luckily, Nikon’s own box protected the lens, but the corners were smushed by all the transportation. Seeing that this was shipped by Amazon, I was a little disappointed but the lens still does indeed function properly.

    Great walking around lens!

I bought my Z6ii with the 24-70mm f/4 S lens and while great, it definitely needed more reach for walking around. This lens is nearly perfect. Super sharp, great focus speed, not an unreasonable size or weight. Definitely a better quality build and feel than the non-S variants. Perfect compromise between using a non-S 24-200 F 4-6.3 and swapping between a 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 s.8 or carrying around 2 cameras. My new go to lens for every day use.

Lens is clear and very sharp

First the delivery was really fast. After a few test shots the lens performs well. Picture quality looks very good. The focal length and distance is really helpful for travel and day to day use with out having to change lenses frequently. All in all the beauty is in the purchaser and how it’s used and I really like this lens. I shot some portraits and the quality and sharpness are excellent. Amazon delivery was a couple of days rather than weeks.

Excellent Daily always on the Z9 lens

This is an excellent lens. Its sharpness, focus speed and the close reach are excellent. I use it on a Nikon Z9 and being an f4 lens does not seem to be that much of a concern in low light conditions as it is working great. The lens seems to be well constructed. Till date, I was using the Full frame DSLR lenses from Nikon using the FTZII converter. This is my first Z lens and I am impressed!

O my gosh! The best lens ever

This is my favorite zoom lens!!! I have a lot of lenses but this one is the one! Super sharp nice bokeh, impressive zoom range! F4 is enough for a lot of situations. Even with my 2.8 lens I rarely use 2.8. This lens is really good and I think that Nikon did something amazing with this lens. It is much cheaper than bulky 24 70 2.8 and is much lighter. I think that the picture quality is as good as the pro 2.8. I recommend it to anyone using a full frame Nikon z camera.

    Much better than the 24-200

I purchased a Z5 in April of 2021 and the 2 lens options were the 24-50 and 24-200. Naturally I went with the 24-200 and was very pleased with it’s versatility, but the image quality left a little to be desired especially in the corners and in lower light. When the 24-120 was introduced I started saving my pennies and am glad I did. The fixed F4 keeps the ISO down, and the shutter speed up when zooming in. I did a controlled test of the 24-120 vs my 24-200 and the image quality differences are noticeable. In the center both lenses are sharp and detailed at all apertures, but in the corners the 24-120 is much sharper and perfectly usable even wide open. At 24mm where both lenses are at F4 the 24-120 is much better for both corner sharpness and vignetting. The 24-200 only gets to a reasonable level of sharpness in the corners at F11 and it’s still worse than the 24-120 at F4. The same story applies at 50mm, but now the 24-200 is wide open at F5.6. At 120mm the 2 lenses are actually the same in overall sharpness at all aperatures, but then the 24-200 is at a slow F6.3 compared to the F4. At 200mm the 24-200 needs to be stoped down to really get the best out of it, wide open it’s soft in the whole image, at F9 it sharpens up nicely corner to corner, but it only matches the 24-120 at 120mm wide open. So the 24-120 F4S is the much better lens in a similar size to the 24-200. If you can spend the few hundred extra for the 24-120 I’d highly recommend it.

    Perfect travel lens

This lens is a vast improvement over any previous Nikon offering in this zoom range. Beyond just being sharp over the entire range even at f4, this lens can focus really close, allowing for macro performance at 120mm focal length. On a body such as a Nikon Z7 (45mp) the images are stunning with sharp detail right to the corners. At 50mm focal length this lens is as sharp as any prime lens and often better. Couple this lens with Nikon’s 100-400mm zoom lens for maximum range with image quality only dreamed of a few years ago.

    Great z lens

While the 24-70 kit lens is also very good, the extended reach and premium feel and weight of this lens are excellent. It’s focus speed and accuracy is very good on a Z6 and Z50. Works great for indoor hockey. Focus speed is excellent

    Diggin this lens

Great all arounder for any time you don’t need fast glass. Sharp, focuses fast enough, barrel extends way out when zoomed in but that’s ok. Zoom ring has a nice amount of friction so it doesn’t slide if the camera is facing down. Recommend.

    First Review

I received the 24-120mm lens yesterday and have had a small amount of time to test it. I have been waiting for this lens to come out since the Z7 was announced. And then a few months more from the official announcement for the order to be fulfilled. The zoom range on this lens is going to cover most people’s needs which makes it a must have for most people. As mentioned the zoom range is huge. This will suit most needs. Yes the 24-200mm has a longer reach, however the size of the aperture reduces too, making it great for many uses, but challenging in low light or when inside. The 24-120mm lens is larger than the 24-200mm. So if you want a small compact lens, the 24-70mm kit lens is probably a better choice. A simple truth is that better glass means bigger lenses. f4 is fine. Anything wider increases the likeliness of it being out of focus. There is no image stabilization in the lens which does make a noticeable difference. My Z7 body has stabilization. Nikon et al will say to increase the iso. You might see blur when shooting at 120mm below 1/125th without it on. I haven’t fully tested to see the slowest possible hand held exposure.Looking through the viewfinder, the image quality looks very sharp. This isnt going to be prime lens sharp. For most uses, I would rather use the 24-120 than carrying and having to be changing lenses all day. If you are pixel peeping more than capturing images then your images are never going to be great anyway. Focus on great composition, lighting and what is happening in the frame. Whoever gets asked what lens they used by someone admiring an image?I managed to get some zoomed in macro shots of plant stamen with a very very shallow depth of field. The closet focus distance from the lens is probably about 6 inches at 120mm. Macro extension tubes will get you closer for little money. The focus is generally pretty quick although can take a few seconds when going from closest to furthest. It also got lost on a couple occasions, taking a few seconds longer.I dont think the 24-120mm will be compatible with the Nikon teleconverters. I dont know if there are others. At the widest zoom, the glass will collide. The filter thread is 72mm which means I dont have to buy a whole new set as this is the same as older Nikon lenses. There is a function button and aperture ring that you can program. For example focus lock or to adjust the aperture. The build quality is pretty solid. The body is a hard plastic like Z bodies. The mount is metal. There isnt any play in the barrel.Over all I am very pleased with the purchase! I will add images when possible.

I’ve used the latest generation of the f/4 DSLR lens for years. It was my Swiss Army Knife lens.I do about 95% of my shooting with it for my type of photography.Switched to mirrorless and got this Z version, which I’ve rented before.I think the Z version is sharper. Can’t recommend this lens more for it’s range, speed and price.BUT…….BE WARNED!Amazon’s packing is appalling, almost non-existent.The Nikon product box iwas in a thin outer Amazon box.No padding whatsoever! No plastic to keep it waterproofed and It’s supposed to rain tonight!Tracking still shows it’s still in transit and the tracking number has changed, but I didn’t get an update yet.I happened to check the front door and there it was.No telling how long it had been there.Great price and was relieved to see it’s a US Warranted product, but the lack of packing and bad tracking worries me.Come on Amazon! You should know better.

    super sharp zoom

This replaces my 27-70 f4 with some extended range and no loss of quality. This is a very usable lens for a variety of purposes like events, portraits and live gigs especially. The image quality is exceptional- at professional quality- and while it might not have the super creamy bokeh of an f2.8 it is still pretty good and at half the price, weight and size it is probably the best value for your money.

    I love this lens

I originally had the Nikon 24-200 f4-6.3 Z lens that I was using as a walk-around lens. However, I was also having to increase my ISO because the lens was just to slow for the shots that I was taking. The 24-200 run towards that f6.3 as soon as you start to zoom it. I decided that I would go with the 24-120 f4 for the constant aperture. It is a night and day difference between using the two (no pun intended). The autofocus and picture quality are excellent. No regrets here, this is one of my favorite lenses. If you are looking for a good everyday lens for your Z series camera. You can get this one with no worries, it kicks butt.

    Excellent lens

If you don’t need the extra f stop of the 24-70 lens, this is a big improvement. A bit more reach and still as sharp as a tack. However, I’ve gone with the 24-200 lens for the extra reach. Still as sharp as I need, but if there’s a bird somewhere I can shoot it. But again, the 24-200 loses light gathering power.

I like the 24-200 very much.

Well, I ordered the NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 but I received the 24-200 the price is the same. I had debated which on to get and I am glad that they shipped the wrong one because I like the 24-200 very much. The added range is well worth the slight reduction in f stop. Great lens!

    Stunning Image Quality

Before purchasing this lens, I was mostly using my Sigma Art 24, 35, 105, and 135 primes with an FTZ adapter. The images are just as sharp on this 24-120mm F/4 S lens, and so much lighter and easier to carry than multiple primes. I like that I can program the button to show magnification of where I am focusing to make sure that I nail the shot, and I have the rear ring setup to adjust exposure compensation when highlights or shadows skew too far to the right or left. I’d recommend this lens to anyone, and it’s an easy decision over the 24-70mm F.2.8, unless you absolutely need F/2.8! 10/10.

    Great travel lens, maybe

I got this to replace the Nikon 24-70 f/4 lens and optically, sharpness, that kind of stuff, very very hard to tell a difference. Weight and size is obviously more on this lens, but the extra reach (from 70-120) offsets that to me. If you can handle the bigger and heavier aspect, it is perfect. But if you are not comparing to the 24-70 f/4, then get this lens.

You can take it with you anywhere

if you need to take one lens with you when you go out, this is it. That is if you have a Z camera. Even though it is not a fast lens but it is really sharp. Indoors it is ok but not as great as a 1.8 our even a 2.8. Recommend it to anyone who just wants to take one lens to an outdoor event or landscape photography.

    Perfect for Doc style shooting!

This is a lens that you can basically just fuse to the body if you are a photojournalist. It covers everything that you need, Wide or telephoto with nice softness in the background at full 125mm. I used this on a really internse doc style video shoot and I do wish the autofocus was a little faster, but it’s not bad. I love this lens!

Great all-purpose, lightweight lens for Z cameras

Yes, this was the Nikon USA warranty version (i.e., not grey market) which was an initial concern prior to delivery. Optically a great lens in the f/4 S series. As stated, it does not have internal lens VR stabilization, which lowers the weight and bulk, but that is not an issue with Z cameras that have VR built into the body. I’m happy.

    Nikon durability

Very sturdily built lens. Amazon delivery driver literally threw it on my porch with a very loud crashing noise, but took it out and it works great. No damage or even any signs of decentering after being handled so roughly. I love the durability of Nikon lenses, but will be ordering from someone who ships using reliable people next time, and recommend you do too.

    Affordable and exceptional image quality

It’s an exceptional lens. Image quality, auto focus and build are all excellent. But it may not be the best lens to use in low-light. Paired with the Z6II, it does tend to hunt in low-light.

Best Nikon Lens In The World.

Took all of 2 days to get to southern Nevada from New Jersey. Great service. The Nikon Z 24-120 lens is incredibly hard to get these days. Best Buy and camera stores have been out of stock on this item for months. Glad I found this one. Great color and sharp detail with this superb lens on my Z7ii camera. I sold my recently purchased Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 ($2,400.00) which didn’t give me enough reach.

    very nice lens for travel

Even though I have several Nikon larger aperture lenses such as 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, I’m glad to use this lens for travel, it covers 24mm to 120mm which can be used in most of scenarios.
