29 reviews for Panasonic HC-WXF1 4K Cinema-like Camcorder, 24x Leica Dicomar Lens, 1/2.5″ Bsi Sensor, Three O.I.S. Stabilizer Systems Electronics

  1. Rob Gelnik

    Great cam. Viewfinder.

This shoots very high quality, sharp video. Menus are intuitive and pretty easy to figure out. Fantastic zoom capability however zoomed way out, hand held, the image stabilization is a bit laggy. Low light performance is quite good. Battery life is ok if you shoot less than 1 hour.Shoots in a variety of common formats. I prefer the 1080 60 FPS MP4 format for my vids. Still shot quality is quite decent as well and you can get some amazing detail with that zoom capability.Has a proper viewfinder so you can see what you’re framing with bright sunlight behind you- very important IMO and so few cams in this size have one.Panasonic engineers did a good job on the design here. A lot of useful features in a small, light package.

    Excellent Handycam

I love this camera because it has everything a handycam can offer today. I am particularly impressed with its zoom range which makes this handycam ideal for wildlife videography. 4k capability is icing on top. The video quality turns out brilliant and the image stabilization is marvellous. The videos remain super stable even at the farthest end of the zoon. In fact, this camera offers far better image stabilization than professional grade SONY FDRAX700 or SONY FDRAX53b. I have compared several handycams and in my experience this handycam gives the best value for money in 2019.

    Works well but not reliable

This is a long term review, I have owned numerous 1080 camcorders from Panasonic, Canon, Sony and have used them in the past 20 years for the exact same application that I bought this WXF1. I also own the 4K wxf-991K which was bought in February 2023 as a replacement while waiting for warranty. Initially, I wanted a better image quality so decided to go with this model because of the bigger 4k sensor. The Good:Great image quality, very good hybrid zoom if you need to reach things that are far away. The battery is good and will last even in the cold. The stabilizer is not that great at this price point, believe the 4k Sony in this price range is better but it still does the job. The screen on the side is very bright so you can use it anywhere without issues or just use the viewfinder. Controls are easy to use and a very intuitive menu. Now the Bad… not reliable Bought this camera in April 2021 but only started using it mid November 2021. The camera worked flawlessly from November 2021 to April 2022 @ outdoor filming 4-5 days a week, 35-45 minutes/day, and again from November 2022 to around late January 2023. One afternoon the camera turned on but went into night mode with a black image. Everything worked but no light was reaching the sensor. After a brief assessment I realized that the iris in the back was no longer opening (compared it with another WXF1) but the mechanism was still getting activate upon start up.Luckily I had a credit card warranty extension and sent it to the company in charge of Panasonic repairs (not the easiest process). The cost of the repair ended up just over 1000$ and they had to change the whole lens unit. That was May 2023. The camera was checked and started filming again in November 2023. Late December 2023, the exact same issue happened. This time no warranty and the camera is now in a box as I cannot afford the 1000$ this will cost to repair again especially knowing these don’t last. This camera was protected in a bag at all times the same way all my previous camera were. At this price I would expect the camera to last more than 7 months of usage and the fact it broke twice is pretty incredible. I have had other Panasonic products and have always been very satisfied but this was a pretty bad experience. The Wxf-991 is now working full time and so far no issues.

    More complicated than I expected

I purchased this camera with the expectation that I could use it as a very high-quality web camera for streaming group events. This is possible, but not without additional research and hardware.I found out that to make this work a Cam Capture card (Not a USB/HDMI converter) is required. I purchased the Elgato Cam Link 4K. It is an older model, but works just fine. The Camera works very well. There are a lot of different functions to learn. Unfortunately, there is NOT a ‘quick start’ guide to get you up and running, so unless you are familiar with the operation of video cameras, be prepared to read through the manual to figure out how to even take a video. There is a lot to the manual, well over 200 pages in the online PDF, so you don’t have to read it all, you should be able to jump to the subject you want and figure it out from there, the manual is very well documented, and will allow you to jump from subject to subject via links within the document.Once I figured out how to turn on the camera and make a video everything went very smoothly. The quality is amazing, and the 4k still images that it takes are astonishingly clear.I would definitely recommend this camera.

  6. Wobbly

Punches way above it’s weight class! BUT…

Would normally give this super little unit five stars, BUT: Panasonic made this unit incompatible with 3RD party batteries. The Pana ones are roughly $100 and $197 respectively. A complete rip off. Bought this for run and gun and would have bought the EVA1 for a working camera. Not now… It’ll be the Canon C200 instead. So Panasonic your battery rip-off just cost you a $9000 sale.

very limited lifetime. 150 hours auto focus & zoom malfunctions due to internal debris.

So much debris on the inner optical unit (inaccessible) that auto focus attempts to focus on this debris. Zoom to telephoto or back again often results in loss of focus. Also manual focusing does not function – inner lenses seem to stick. Image quality is still 100% but camera, now at about 170 total hours of recording only usable @ 1x -4x.Debris seems to be tiny shards of plastic or rubber upon inner surface of outermost lens & surface of lens that retracts into camera. Cost of video recorded = about $7 per hour. All features are 1st rate however, if you buy get 3 year warranty.

Great for Getting The Critical Shot

I previously owned the WXF991 and was less than satisfied with the image stabilization at long focal lengths. I waited for the price on the WXF1 to come down for months and was hoping to see a wealth of reviews and user experiences. But apparently people aren’t buying camcorders anymore, and only 10 of these have been sold in North America gauging by the scarcity of Amazon reviews. So I feel obligated to write something… I’m not writing this review from the stand point of someone seeking absolute image quality and recording studio performance from this singular device. I don’t think it was designed for that honestly. Hence the audio delay mentioned in another review, which is very annoying and will preclude you from using this to record yourself speaking while monitoring the audio. No, I’m writing this as someone who uses this camcorder with its main design goals in mind, ease of use and the ability to quickly record anything in your field of view. In that vein, this camcorder is the best prosumer model I’ve used to date, better than its predecessor, the WXF-991, and far better than the Sony FDR AX-53 (which does everything it can to prevent you from nailing the critical shot with incredibly annoying pop-ups on the screen). Now, the image quality of 4k footage is good, better than decent, and it performs great in daylight. Low light is another story, and you probably know the drill. However, you can use the various night modes to obtain usable footage. The IR mode in particular is exceptionally useful for me, and you can even screw an IR filter onto the front threads to get IR footage in daylight. The main strength of this camera is its incredible stabilization. I don’t mean that you can run with the camera and the footage looks like you’re on a Segway. No, the stabilization works best when you’re stationary. You can literally handhold the camcorder, and with enough practice, get stable footage all the way out to the limits of the digital zoom, 1500x. Now, all you’re doing is looking at pixels at that point, but this means that using the camera at 125x or 300x is relatively simple. Its much better than any of its competitors in this regard. This stability is great when you’re seated observing distant activities. This combined with the very smooth zoom lever makes for a fun day at the park or sporting event capturing great footage of your kids. Or, if you’re a private investigator, its very useful to have at the ready in a vehicle combined with a small monopod.Another useful tidbit if you’re using it professionally is that the power cable attaches to a usb port, making it relatively simple to keep charged while in a vehicle. The larger round 62mm diameter (roughly the size of a soda can) combined with the automatically retracting lens cover, means you can keep this in your vehicle’s cupholder for easy access. Finally, I wouldn’t find any use for a camcorder without a viewfinder, as they are to integral to the user experience, esp. when recording in direct sunlight. Plus, holding it to your eye gives extra stability. This model also has the focus ring, which works well in manual mode, if you need to focus on something obscured by tree branches. For my purposes, this is the best camcorder on the market, which is why I’m giving it 5 stars.

Stunning 4K Cam on a Budget

The recordings played on a 4k or even 1080p TV are very sharp, audio excellent. Has the eyepiece I needed and the manual focus ring, which sold me along with lower sale price. It’s a hybrid cam with better stabilizing and shoots in multi formats, default setting is 4k. Only slight minus is the small box it comes in. Too flimsy and the camera sits near the top. Still, that’s just the Panasonic box and it arrived fine.Panasonic makes very good camcorders, this one is recommended.

    Short Review

Pro:* HD and 4k are on par with pro-consumer quality* default battery is “normal” life but what rocks is the charging cable is standard 5v USB so I just need to carry a big battery pack for on the fly charging. (while waiting for cheaper 3rd party batteries to be usable).* IA+ mode is great with +/- exposure control (helps compensate for other weaknesses)* pre-record mode good* low light color very good* record mode switching goodCons:I’ve had Panasonic Pro-consumer video cams for 12+ years so I expect a certain quality. I didn’t get it in this model.* default video is too high contrast* low light is not as good as advertised, at least 2 f-stops weaker than HC-X900 in comparable situations* no zebra mode (show wash out area of over exposure)* no Macro mode* does not come with shoulder strap, lens hood, lens over.* manual exposure control works but way more cumbersome than prior models* BIG ISSUE is that it appears to have SPOT metering vs avg so it exposes to whatever is center squared. Can’t tell you how big of a pain this is in general use.Now after shooting close to 50 hrs, I have to downrate this thing to 3 stars due to metering. I’ve had Panasonic cameras for 10+ years, this one is many steps backwards.

    Met all of my expectations

I bought the HC-WXF1 4K to take family videos. It is excellent.I am most impressed by the zoom and stabilization. At 24x, I get a sharp and steady image. At my grandchild’s recent stage performance, I stood at the back of the school’s auditorium and got an excellent closeup. No need to jockey with other parents for a place near the stage to get good closeup shots. The camera offers a nice choice of video formats:* Ultra High Def (2160) at 30 frames per sec (fps)* Ultra High Def (2160) at 24 fps* High Def (1080) at 60 fps* High Def (1080) at 24 fps* High Def (1080) at 24 fps

Illogical Awkward Button Placement Wastes Time for Manual Control

Panasonic has always been a head and shoulder above competition in terms implementing quality, size and raft of features. The form factor, size, convenience, and features of the flagship consumer model has earned them a special place as part of the raft of cameras in the field as an alternative to action cams and can very well collect footage in situations where a more advanced camera can’t be risked or practically used.CONS> A multi-step time wasting manual control hassle involves the awkward placement of buttons that control Iris, Zoom and Focus assigned to two buttons on the left side toward the front. Once activated (and you can’t rearrange which ones get activated first and have to cycle through Zoom, Iris and Focus every-time) by repeatedly pressing the 1st button, is then followed by you having to press the 2nd button to activate the ring to make adjustments to the values of Iris, Focus or Zoom mode. This is so awkward and time consuming and just a hassle specially when shooting unscripted live subjects. There is a variant of this camcorder called HC-VX1 that features no ring and unchanged layout from previous models that is recommended over this model. Manual adjustments are done in LCD via menu options and you can choose which ones are at your disposal in the menu.> The ring is subject to getting sand and dust stock in its mechanism and so you eventually will feel bumps and resistance associated with tiny particles as you turn it to make manual adjustments for Iris, Zoom or Focus.> The maximum running time with the 4000mAH battery, the highest capacity available for the model is 3 hours with the LCD closed. You can power the unit via a power cord as well but options to run for longer periods would have been nice. So your running time for timelapse is limited to roughly 3 hours with the highest capacity battery. You can go on for 12 hours if you power it with power cord.> The stabilization is great for many scenarios and nails challenging situations so well, however in situations where movements are slow such a slow pan it compensates abruptly at times and even though your tripod and head may be ultra smooth, footage is recorded with an abrupt bump toward the end of a slowing pan coming to a full stop. This problem is less of an issue when panning faster, but nevertheless a problem that is noticeable both in horizontal and vertical pans that are feathering out from a stop or feathering in to a stop.PROS> The most lightweight and compact model 4k camcorder at the time of this review. For this reason it makes up an excellent alternative to action cams which are all gimmicks at best and require endless accessories, in the end more or less costing the same as this unit. It is a good candidate for POV shots, difficult to place angles and risky situations where you rather not jeapordize more expensive cameras.> Using Sony’s consumer model underwater housing will enable you to use this camcorder under water at a minimal cost.> Excellent wide lens and zoom range.> Great raft of features included IR mode not available in other models.> Pre-roll (records elapsed event in memory up to several seconds so you won’t miss any action) , timelapse and other presets are very useful.

    great camera

No complaints about the camera but a longer lasting battery is only available from Panasonic and way too expensive (reminds me of printer ink from the manufacturer). After market batteries work for about 1 minute then you get an incompatibility warning and the camera shuts off (a big problem if you started a video shoot and were depending on the battery that seemed fine when tested briefly but not long enough). Had this with a previous model Panasonic 4K but after about a year, aftermarket batteries must have figured it out and work just fine. Guess I’ll have to wait a year to find out.

DELAY IN LIVE RECORDING AUDIO MONITORING – Watch Out!!

DAY 1 of ownershipAudio DelayI own the Panasonic HC-W850 which is a good camcorder. I just got this new HC-WXF1. For semi-professional use, I connect an external mic and monitor the audio through my headphones. With the HC-WXF1 there is a lag/delay between when I speak into the mic and when I hear myself through the headphones. I do NOT have this problem with my HC-W850.I immediately contacted Panasonic customer chat support. I was told, “Oh ok, yes we have heard of the audio delay when monitoring a live recording. There aren’t any setting to stop this. However the audio is not delayed with you play back the video.”In reply I asked whether Panasonic intends to fix this problem by either a firmware update or a product recall. I was told, “At this moment, there aren’t any talks of an update or a recall. I will be sure to forward your comments on the function of the camera.”It is true that in playback there’s no delay between the movement of the mouth and the audio. (I, however, might have to retract that statement because I only made this observation while watching playback on the camcorder’s LCD screen. Maybe I might detect lack of synchronization when I review on a large screen.)If you don’t ever plan on using headphones while shooting, you should not have a problem. I suppose there won’t be much of a problem if the person speaking into the external mic is not the same person who is listening through the headphones. If, however, you sometimes have to be a one-man show, the delay in the audio might cause you to fumble your words while speaking.Mic Door FlapOn another note, there is questionable design by having the external mic door flap downwards. To me this might increase the risk of it accidentally breaking as opposed to the door flap of the HC-W850 which opens upwards.Image QualityStraight out of the box I don’t find the 4k image quality is noticeably better that the Full HD quality of my HC-W850.EVFThe eyecap is too narrow in terms of top-to-bottom distance. I find I am not getting to fully open my eye comfortably; there isn’t enough top room for my eyelashes.Cold ShoeThere isn’t enough front-to-back space to allow all of my external devices to connect to the cold shoe. Oh well, I’ll just have to use a bracket adapter.Useful accessoriesFor the novices out there, I recommend that you buy at least a UV filter (on Amazon you can get different types of filters so check them out). I didn’t know about filters when I bought my HC-W850 years ago. Had I known, my camcorder lens would’ve been spared some desert sand. Now my lens is protected from sand/dust and accidental scratches or worst. I also plan on buying a tulip lens hood to eliminate sun flares, IF I decide to keep this camcorder.

No live video output, No remote control, and Free App is a very poor substitute for those

I’m a huge Panasonic fan, and have two of their awesome HDC-HS900K camera’s, one of which I purchased way back in 2012 and still use it every work day. That said, I was extremely disappointed that this $1,000 4K camera has less features than the 1080p one I bought for the same price six years ago.First Problem: The camera will not output video to a monitor while it is recording in 4k or in WiFi mode. This is a HUGE issue for anyone who has a home studio and needs to be sure “from the stage” that the camera is aligned correctly. This is not an issue with any other Camcorder I’ve even owned going back DECADES.Second problem: The camera has no remote control. For some this may not be an issue, but not even offering a remote accessory like other cameras is depressing. Oh, they do offer a free app – to enable it you want press a little button on the camera, then choose to enable it from the camera’s touchscreen, and then if you’ll be recording for a long time be sure you have a plug for your phone or tablet. The app also gives you a preview but it’s a couple of seconds behind so it can’t be used as a preview monitor, plus not many people have tablets big enough that they could see them from a stage several feet away.Dear Panasonic engineers – if you can build in wifi control with a live view, how hard could it have been to enable live video output. Oh, and add in a $.02 receiver for a remote?NOTE: I did contact Panasonic Tech Support the day I received the camera to see if there was any workarounds to either issue but they NEVER responded. In the end I wish I would have returned this camera for a refund, and just purchased two used 1080p HDC-HS900K. Not only do they come with remotes and output preview video when recording in 1080p, they also have built-in HDDs which store many hours of video.Epic Fail Panasonic: You lost a loyal customer and fan.

Give up the manual control at this price. Give up the image quality in 1080

1080 color is rrally flat and way too contrasty. No shafow, just all black. Hdr mode is really good for that reason but only when you have enough light. No indoor for hdr mode. Resolution is blury witg 100% focused. Sonuse 4k then sample down. 4k has no option just 1 single option. Manual contol is very limited but thanks to its good ai+mode. They compensate the exposure based on the face not the background. If you need more quality and contol cor the same price. Buy lumix fz2500 1inch sensor. Quality is like braodcasting level. I have both camera but image quality of fz2500 is about 3times more sharp and accurate and dynamic range. This camcorder is not for youtubers or documentary film makers. Only for travel quick shoot.

Can’t record and streem simultaneously – Very limited Mic input control

I really needed to control mic input volume but that is extremely difficult. When streaming, I had the camera all set up and started the YouTube live broadcast but as soon as I pressed record on the camera, YouTube couldn’t detect the camera. The event started already so I couldn’t record the event on camcorder. I’ll be returning the cameraZoom was great, I didn’t have to be up close to the speakersCharging cable input is not in such a convenient spot

    video files

I recorded a hour long concert without stopping or pausing the video, but the camera split the video into five video files. Does anyone know how to prevent that from happening.

Quality equals that of $$$ cameras!

I’ve been searching for the right 4K camera for quite some time. Having worked for JVC, I’ve seen some amazing technology. After comparing similar models, I couldn’t pass up the WXF1. The twin-camera looking back at you is an ingenious idea. It’s so true that we normally can’t capture what’s going on behind the camera. My 6 year old son is always in the frame and now I can be too! The build quality is sturdy and should allow for years of use. I have larger hands and I think the fit is good, though if someone has larger hands they may opt for an external mount/stabilizer. The audio microphone is good enough. I got an external mic. The difference is black and white. I have the lowcut filter off, AGC on and the decibel gain down to -24. The sound is now about par with studio quality. The stabilization takes a little getting used to. It tends to lag behind with rapid movement, which is standard as the system is an internal stabilization. Stabilization is very smooth in tripod-controlled movements however. The video itself is crisp and the high frame rate is excellent. I will say that the top shoe access door is a bit flimsy and I don’t trust it would stay attached with constant in-and-out of a bag if that door is open and an accessory is mounted. The 62mm lens up front accepts a wide variety of hoods. Just know that some of those hoods will actually stick out below the base of the camera so it may rub on some accessory mounts/handles if you choose to go that route. Night visions is fantastic though it fades easily when the camera is zoomed in. Menus and touchscreen is easy to use. I like that it turns on the moment you open the LCD monitor or pull out the viewfinder and turns off when they’re closed. Battery life is decent at 90 minutes with a full charge and better if using the viewfinder. The smartphone app is very useful. There is a little latency but it’s not disruptive. Additionally, it comes with a three year warranty. Woot!

    Another Great Panasonic Camcorder

I’ve had this camera since the day it was released. I’ve made over 100 videos in the last few months this camera and it’s amazing. Search Youtube for my video reviews and examples from this camera. The low light is amazing and the Infrared is even better, it works in ZERO LUX. The stabilization is better than the Panasonic HC-VX981 which I own also. I also own a Sony AX53 and almost never it anymore since I bought this Panasonic HC-WXF1.

    Very difficult to adjust settings

I have owned a Panasonic video cam previously, so when I bought this camera I thought I was stepping up in quality. All the features Panasonic advertise don’t work in 4K trying to navigate around the menu system is a nightmare. The zoom function shoots all over the place and the buttons are really awkward to press.I paid $1000 Aus for this piece of crap don’t get sucked in like I was.

Great Camera..I’ve had 6 of them. The bottoms rip off on a mono pole on one day

The best Camera out there! I’ve had 6.Way over priced. Panasonic could care less about their customers. Bottom of the bottom of the camera rips off the first day if you use a mono pole. I’ve sold hundreds of Camers for them through subs. They could care less.. Hello new company!
