    5.0 out of 5 stars

From a Olympus user, this is the best ultra wide m43 lens (better than the Olympus 7-14mm Pro)

    1. Background, I’m very familiar with the Olympus m43 line and some of the Panasonic lens line (i.e. I have the Olympus 12-40mm, 12-100mm, 40-150mm, Panasonic 12-35mm, 35-100mm etc… and I have some other stuff, but you get the point). I also forgot to mention that I’ve tested the Olympus 7-14mm and the Panasonic version as well.2. On a tangent, I wasn’t impressed with the recent Panasonic / Leica 12-60mm as well as their super telephoto (100-400mm) and thus I was dubious about the quality of this lens. I readily admit I was wrong about my reservations about this lens; again, I’m not a Panasonic lens expert but of the various ones I’ve owned / tested, this is their most impressive lens.3. Several Impressions: — Well built; I would say that the Olympus Pro lens feel more robust, but that’s not to mean this isn’t well built. — Perfect size: this may relate to the above impression that it doesn’t feel as robust compared to the Olympus Pro Line but for me, at least in this instance, that’s a good or ok thing. Simply because the size is fairly compact, it is relatively light; really nice for a m4/3 camera. As an example, I would say that the Olympus 12-100mm is on the border of too large / heavy for a m43 camera and I use the EM1 v2. –Feel / action: very good and smooth –Quality: I haven’t done scientific experiments but in comparing this to my other lens (at similar focal lengths, when possible) and shooting on a tripod etc… etc… Yes, this lens is excellent. Obviously most folks are going to wonder how sharp this lens is at 8mm; it’s really good. I’m going to tick off people, but from my recollection and in reviewing my prior test shots (because I don’t have the Olympus 7-14mm at home), this Panasonic is definitely sharper. Of course the Olympus is wider by 1mm, but the Panasonic has the overt advantage of size (i.e. lighter), image quality (yes, I’m opinion) and ability to utilize filters.Highly recommended

Great lens. The Ultimate m43 UWA lens IMHO.

Great lens so far. Bought it as replacement for my Olympus 7-14/2.8. The Olympus 7-14/2.8 is an amazing lens, but I found it more useful when doing serious work, but a lot less for walk-around. It was big and heavy (in m43 standards), would not take normal filters, and the adapter for 100mm square filters for it was decent, but required gentle handling. Finally the bulbous front element always made me worried I would bump it into something. The PanaLeica fixes pretty much everything I didn’t like about the Olympus lens – it’s smaller, much lighter (just a bit over half the weight!), and takes 67mm filters or filter holder adapters. It’s the perfect walk-around lens, esp as it is also a little longer. Build quality seems really good – it may be half-a-step lower than the spectacular build quality of the Olympus PRO lenses, but it still feels very well built. Metal constructions, extremely smooth zoom and focus, and while the front element moves with zooming, it moves inside the barrel, so if you put a clear filter on top, you can assure no dust will go in. The “price” you pay – is that it’s only 8mm wide, not 7mm, and that it’s 2.8 only @ 8mm. Personally I find that a reasonable price to pay for what I get. If I need faster lens in the longer range, I can switch to other lenses. In terms of image quality – I have not yet stress tested it – but it seems sharp across the range even wide open. AF is fast and accurate as with all modern m43 lenses. It is also parfocal. Finally – as I use it on Olympus (EM1II) I was a little concerned of potential issues with purple flaring as with the Panasonic 7-14/4. I’m glad to say I have not encountered such issues yet, despite aggressively shooting into light sources…

good except corners are a little soft

very nice. solid build with smooth dampened focus and zoom. to my surprise for a lens in this price range, the corners are a little soft. i’m not the first one to notice this. i love that it takes filters and it has NO hotspots for infrared photography (on my modified camera).

    A stunning wide angle zoom

This lens is a must have for Panasonic GH5 users. It’s size is slightly larger than the kit Panasonic-Leica 12-60mm, but this lens is just as useful. This is my go-to lens for all gimbal work. The front element does not extend when zooming which means I don’t have to adjust the balance of the gimbal whether I’m at 8mm or 18mm. An added plus for videographers and landscape photographers is the non-protruding front which allows for use of 67mm filters — THIS IS HUGE! The lens itself is well built with smooth zoom rings, and it’s par-focal to boot! Panasonic definitely took their time getting it right, and out-doing their own 7-14mm. So what are the downsides? In my mind there are two. The aperture is not a constant 2.8, but the loss of the light is smoothly transitioned as one zooms, instead of in jarring 1/3 stop clicks. The second is that when using with IBIS on Panasonic bodies (I’ve used on the G85 and GH5) you can occasionally get warped distortion (or “Jello” appearance) of the outer corners of the image. This has apparently been rectified in the most recent firmware release for the GH5, but I have yet to confirm whether it’s actually an improvement or not. But this is nitpicking for negatives. On the whole this lens is excellent, with a great build and sharp image renderings. I highly recommend this lens.

GODLY LENS!!! Leica and Panasonic’s BEAST

Super-wide angle to 36mm equiv. (18mm) makes everything so much easier. I used to shoot solely on fast primes so I was leaning towards the 12mm f/1.4 panaleica, but this baby came out and I pulled the trigger on this purchase. Not regretting a single moment.Aside from the heavier, bulkier build, which is easy to get used to, this lens provides varied perspectives with enough lighting and the image quality provided by the Leica design and Japanese engineering.Definitely try out this lens, and you might fall for it, too.Videographers, this lens is butter, the zoom is parfocal so you don’t need to worry about autofocus, etc. Though the autofocus drive in this lens is very fast (240fps auto focus drive). 4K and on…puffintreesco.com

Great rectilinear wide angle lens for video and photography

This lens has been great for doing real estate video and photography with my GH5 camera. The image is sharp and clear. The autofocus does not hunt and is very quick to grab focus when flowing motion. I have also used this lens for some upclose nature photography of mushrooms and other small flowers and plants. This lens is also a grerat vlogging lens as it allows for a close focal distance while still allowing the background to be shown. This lens was worth every penny and has become a primary lens for me.The best part of this wide angle lens is the fact that you can screw on ND filters. Most wide angles have a bulging lens that prevents a filter being natively attached.

    Great lens

Better overall than my Panasonic 7-14mm. At least for me. You lose a little on the wise end. Bummer. And it is NOT sharper than the 7-14mm. But it’s very close. But you can focus MUCH closer with lens than the 7-14mm. And it’s f2.8 on the wide end.And you can use a filter which I never do personally. Also there is no way I’m gonna haul around the Olympus Pro. That was a non starter for me. Backpacking and skiing is not amenable too heavy lenses.

Great super wide lens but not great for low light.

This is a great lens that’s a perfect weight to balance to gimbals. It’s sharp at all focal lengths in true Leica style. However, what kills it for me is the variable aperture. The Olympus 7-14, while lacking as much reach in the far end zoom, maintains a constant f/2.8 aperture. This is mostly a weakness for low light shooting, which I do regularly, so I ended up returning this lens to another solution.Additionally the lens flare from pinpoint light sources on screen, especially with LED DJ/concert lights isn’t particularly pleasing. It looks a bit dirty for some reason.

Welcome to the best of modern optics

As for stills you can crop for the equivalent of any focal length, it pays to have an exquisite ultra-wide angle zoom – and for micro four-thirds (MFT), this is it. I measure its limiting resolution at more than 1200 line-pairs (2400 in individual lines) resolution wide angle wide open, only diminished at 18mm higher than f8. Other reviews say none is better.

    Most sensible choice on UWA

After agonizing for several months, I bit the bullet and bought one to replace a 4/3 9-18. It is overall a better product than the old 4/3 UWA. Build and AF are two immediate improvements. In terms of IQ, there is little difference between the two in the center. However, edge performance is much better with this PL 8-18. CA is another improvement even though the old 4/3 is supposed to be good. I passed Oly 7-14 because it is too big, expensive and does not take filter. I also did not consider the m4/3 9-18 because it is too expensive relative to this PL 8-18.

… on my Olympus Pen-F and the combination makes a great, high quality wide angle camera in a size …

I’ve been using the Panasonic 7-14 on my Olympus Pen-F and the combination makes a great, high quality wide angle camera in a size we could only have dreamed about in the film camera days. The one failing of the 7-14 is that it can show a lot of blue/violet fringing when shot towards the light. Olympus bodies don’t correct this and it’s suprisingly difficult to remove with software. The Olympus 7-14 lens is the best of the m43 wide zooms but on the Pen, it’s a monster. Might as well use an APS camera. The new Pansaonic 8-18 hits the sweet spot, IMO. It’s very sharp, much lower in chromatic aberration than the 7-14 Panasonic and while not small, the 8-18 is amazingly lightweight. You’ll think it’s hollow!Other plusses include that while the 8-18 is not made by Leica nor in Germany, it is made in Japan. And for those of you who think “not made in China” makes no difference, even with such a complex lens, scroll up this page and you’ll see Panasonic is not shy about calling your attention to Made In Japan so they seem to think it’s a plus. Another nice feature is the ability to use filters. This lens is too wide to use a polarizer but you can certainly use graduated filters or just a clear/UV filter to protect the glass.ll in all, a great lens that maximizes what you can get out of m43. There certainly are cheaper lenses but with the small m43 sensor, you really want the best lenses you can get (IMO.)

    A Whole New Sharpness !

I purchased this lens in hopes to replace a few lenses I had and wanted to get the Leica quality. I am not a Professional however from all of the picture postings, I do not see to many that can rival my shots. I wanted this lens to be able to take historic buildings and scenics or inside shots without having distortion that you see in many wide angles. I had a Fuji 18mm and a Olympus 12-40 prior to this purchase. I liked those lenses but they just dont have what this one does. This Panasonic Leica lense is built well and the optics are a result of all the very latest technology. In short it is the best lens on the planet for its mm range and sharpness. When you look at the pictures taken with this lens, there are no “maybes” or “its as good”. It has no distortion. The pictures have exactly the same quality that you have seen in Leica lens pictures in the past but I really have not ever seen even a Leica lens with this clarity. Mark Leonard

    Surprisingly Wonderful

It’s not the Olympus Pro, it’s not the Panny Leica lens — but I am getting outstanding results from this ultra wide, shooting on Olympus bodies — E-M1 mark II and Pen F. Totally scratched the itch for an ultra wide. Did not really expect to be getting these results. The accompanying JPG image shot at 7mm, f/10, 1/400 shutter speed. I’m a very happy camper with this one.

Great vlogging lens for mft cameras

Wonderful vlogging lens with my Panasonic gx85 mft camera. Auto focus is good, sharpness is good. Didn’t notice too much warping comparing them to other wide mft lenses I’ve had. Just the right amount of zoom too. Used it for about 3 months and never failed on what I used it for.* Switched to Sony so I no longer have the lens.*But the sharpness was on par (could hardly tell difference) on the a7iii W/ Kit lens 28-70mm vs Panasonic gx85 w/ 8-18mm

    Very sharp at the wide!

Amazing wide-angle lens for GH5 at a great price. Do not buy if you intend to use it with a BMPCC 4k. it has bad go pro like distortion. It is electronically corrected in the GH5 or another m43 Lumix cameras.

    Happy

Great lens- The same size as the stock kit G85 12-60mm Lumix lens. You have to experiment to see the conditions under which the super wide settings look best with minimum stretching and distortion of subjects, since although it keeps all lines straight, it WILL stretch subjects on far sides of frame. Super wide (under 12mm) best for landscapes or wide interiors– OR when you are close to subject. IF you need even wider, the Rokinon 7.5mm is fantastic, and will fill the frame without vignetting on a m43 camera, albeit it will curve the sides of straight objects. I have both.

    Impressive wide zoom for M43

This lens doesn’t disappoint, it’s a gem. Great real world sharpness, with exciting wide-angle views and very useful normal views. Don’t know how it’s done but it’s almost impossible to get this lens to exhibit flare. Paired with a B&H circular polarizer and outdoors this became my go to lens on my G-85 and GX-85. As to size – yeah it’s big but covers handles very well on Lumix M4/3 camera’s, especially considering dual stabilization in both the lens and camera.

    A Truly Professional Quality Lens

It has all been said before in other reviews. It is a beautiful wide angle lens. The whole look and feel is pro-level. If wasn’t for the fact it does not have built-in image stabilisation (unlike the equally beautiful 12-35 II) it would never be off my GH5. Not cheap, but this lens doesn’t depreciate (much) and is a no brainer if you have committed to MFT.

    Great but not perfect.

Bought lens for filming with and for the occasional trip photography. All in all it’s a good lens but not worth the price. Color it produces isn’t fantastic and you definitely have focus roll off in the corners. Build quality is perfect and stabilization works great.

Awesome real estate photography lens. There has been no color correction made to this video. Nice add to 4/3’s kit

Much lighter than the Olympus version, and you can use filters with the Pany version. Oly version was too big, too heavy, defeats the purpose of having a micro 4/3’s kit. Image quality is comparable in my opinion.

Zoom range full frame equivalent of 16-36mm is nice to have and unlike other micro four third ultra wide angle lenses you have the ability to mount filters directly to this lens. Great for landscape and architecture photography.

8-18mm Leica this lens for you.

What a sleek little lens. Tried it to take pics of my property. Pictures turn out great inside and out. Only lens I used. With the 2.8-4.0 ASPH. No flash needed. Great addition to my GH5.

Ideal ultra wide zoom for MFT

Top notch lens, perhaps the best zoom lens I’ve ever had. Build quality outstanding, compact, useful zoom range, good fastness, takes filters – ideal zoom lens for MFT.

This lens is why I’ve gone back to m4/3. …

This lens is why I’ve gone back to m4/3. (Now just need to find the right camera, after trying several, to put it on.)

extremly sharp, minimal vignetting and distortion

Lens is deadly sharp, and suffers from very minimal vignetting and distortion. Sharpness becomes evident when looking at 6938×9280 px images made by Olympus’ high res mode.
