    Solid

Works as advertised, reliable. Reassuring to know it’s waterproof, although I can’t see a scenario where I’d be using in/near standing water or rain.

    Been using these for years

I’m a photo retoucher and my husband is a digital tech and these come in handy because they’re extremely fast upload speeds. They’re getting very expensive on Amazon. I used to buy them for 80 now they’re over 100.

    The best

I travel 3-4 weeks at a time and take photos/videos a lot. I use my phones (Samsung Galaxy Note) and download them to T7 Shield 4TB every night. My raw photos are about 3-4MB and it can fill up my phone pretty fast (1.28GB). This T4 portable SSD holds a lot. I Love it. It comes with two connectors, USB C to C and C to A. I use Imac to work on my project and having different connectors is handy. The data transfer speed is super fast! It’s been about 6 month and I have had no problems. I’ve had many external drives and this is the best.

    Very fast high capacity but…..

I use this drive mainly for backups. Ever since I bought it, I have noticed that it will often get to about the middle of a backup and the backup will just stop. I finally found out that the usb-c to usb-c cable it comes with is NOT usb 3.2 gen 2 compliant and is a defective cable! I replaced the cable with a usb 4 gen 4 cable and it has yet to fail a backup with the new cable. Other than that issue, I am very happy with this drive.

    Bought two of these…

Bought them on sale. So far so good. I’ve always had good results with Samsung SSD drives. These are great to keep in my backpack so I always have something to save to. Also, I use one of these on my Synology NAS to do additional back ups. I would buy again.

    Great For Mobile Production work

I bought this drive to use out in the field for large video files. Shooting production work in 4K produces huge files, which needs to be transferred off of video camera cards onto hard drive. This is important because these drives are very reliable and you don’t have to worry about a damage, drive and losing your production. I highly recommend this product for on the go work.

    Great Packaging and great product!

Just received this external hard drive which was packaged without any extra useless plastic wrap and everything is paper/recyclable! That’s amazing, great job Samsung! The drive is well made and works as advertised. Highly recommend.

    Fast and reliable!

I recently purchased the Samsung T7 Shield SSD for use with my Blackmagic Pro 6K camera, and my experience has been nothing short of remarkable. Initially, I encountered a hiccup as the first SSD unit arrived dead on arrival. This was undoubtedly disappointing, but the replacement process was smooth and hassle-free, which speaks volumes about the customer service. The second SSD, however, worked like a charm right out of the box. The compatibility with my Blackmagic Pro 6K camera was seamless, offering a significant upgrade to my workflow. The read and write speeds are incredibly fast, ensuring that I don’t miss a beat while shooting high-resolution footage. The SSD’s robustness and durability are also noteworthy, as the T7 Shield is designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor shooting and challenging environments.I was particularly impressed with its compact size and lightweight design, making it extremely portable and a perfect fit for on-the-go shooting scenarios. Additionally, the heat management of the device is excellent, maintaining optimal performance even during extended use. While the initial DOA issue was a setback, the overall performance and reliability of the Samsung T7 Shield SSD have been outstanding. It has proven to be a reliable companion for my professional camera setup, enhancing both the efficiency and quality of my work.In conclusion, I highly recommend the Samsung T7 Shield SSD to any professional videographer or photographer looking for a high-performance, durable, and reliable storage solution. The exceptional performance it delivers, especially in tandem with high-end equipment like the Blackmagic Pro 6K camera, makes it a worthy investment. Five stars for a product that ultimately lives up to its promises, despite the initial hiccup.

    great little dervice

a real step up from my Seagate storage, the clucky ones with the fat USB ends that took the horrific Micro B USB 3, with the dual ports, so difficult to plug in and easy to strip, big bulky cords, big bulky drives, and very prone to just freezing up and mine did. Not a solid state as my nifty new little T7 is. I could not be happier with the speed, size, function, reliability, packability, waterproofing, and overall superiority of the T7 product from what I have had in the past. It is light years ahead and a joy to use. The USB C is a delight, the color is lovely, and the price was very reasonable for 2 T as well. Thrilled with my purchase.

Fantastic but I decided not to use the “security features”

The SAMSUNG T7 Shield 2TB is a workhorse of an external drive. It delivers on multiple fronts: speed, durability, and capacity. For those constantly on the move or working in various conditions, its rugged design is a definite plus. I’ve found data transfer speeds to be exceptionally fast, making it convenient for moving large files in a short amount of time. However, I do have some reservations about the security features. As someone who works across both Mac and PC platforms, I’ve had previous issues with the T5 model in terms of security setup. These experiences have made me slightly cautious when it comes to fully trusting the security features of the T7 Shield.Don’t get me wrong, the drive offers password protection and hardware encryption, but if you’re like me—someone who has had compatibility issues in the past—then this is something to consider. Depending on your workflow and the systems you use, your mileage on the security front may vary.To sum up, the SAMSUNG T7 Shield 2TB is an excellent external drive in terms of speed, durability, and design. If those are your primary concerns, it won’t disappoint. However, if you have particular security requirements or work across different operating systems, it might be worth conducting some additional research or tests before relying on it as your go-to secure storage solution.

    Comparison with Sandisk & Crucial

I have an application where I’m managing data (very large files – from 3-200 GB each) across many 4TB portable drives. The Samsung T7 Shield drives are fast and reliable. They’ve worked just as expected, and I can copy 3.5TB of data from one to another typically in under 90 minutes. When copying to the Crucial X9, it starts out fast (600-700 Mbps) but part way through the speed suddenly dies. I tried several times and several configurations, and it always happened. I returned the Crucial drive – it wasn’t useful for my needs. The Sandisk Extreme 4TB copies as fast as the Samsung and works fine at first, but after a few full refreshes and full reformats, it started experiencing multi-second pauses when reading large files from the disk. This became unusable over time, and I replaced the Sandisk with another Samsung.Hope this helps!

Well Made, Fast and Reliable Storage

I have several of these Samsung drives, and have found them to be rock solid in build quality, as well as supporting very fast data transfers. Unlike SSDs I own from another well-known brand, these barely get warm after transferring large amounts of data, which is reassuring. The Shield versions of the T7 drives are a bit larger in size compared with the standard versions, but this is due to their more robust construction and heat dissipation design.I use these for backups of various MacBook laptops we own, as well as storage of large media files. So far they’ve all worked flawlessly. It’s important to use the cables that come with the drive (USB C-C and USB C-A) or their equivalent, as the transfer rate can be significantly slower with cheaper, run of the mill USB C cables.I like the feel of these in my hand, which may seem like a strange thing to say, but their ridges are easier to grab onto than the smoother aluminum finish on the standard version. This means it feels like I’m less likely to drop them. Smooth is nice and looks more sleek, but I think a more “grippy” surface is better when carrying your data around.Oddly enough, I was recently able to get a number of these drives for less money than the standard versions, which I was happy to take advantage of. I’m thinking some people might not prefer them because they are a bit bigger and less elegant looking, but they look that way for a reason. Physical robustness is more important than looks in a storage device.I think Samsung is one of the very best manufacturers of SSD drives right now, so I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for reliable data storage and very fast transfer rates.

Excellent Product – Remember to Use Good Data Migration Process

I have 10 Samsung SSDs, from the 2TB T5, 2TB T7, and now the T7 4GB Shield suite. They have all been excellent. The Shield is a bit heavier (by 1.4 grams more, I believe). I did require technical support for the T7 Shield – disconnecting from Mac periodically during heavy data transfer; the service was excellent and patient over the phone and they gave me Samsung Magician software to check firmware (needed update) and also monitor temperature. This fixed my problem completely. Please, if you’re doing a large data transfer, do it in small chunks and monitor the temperature with Samsung Magician. I put mine on a cloth over one of those food cooler “ice” pads. I continuously monitored the temperature of the two drives while moving data trying to keep it below 90 degrees F. I was moving nearly 2TB of data. I spread the process over two sessions, yesterday and today. I tried to keep the chunks in the 30 GB range, continuously monitoring the temperature. Worked beautifully. You don’t want to overheat these drives because you can do permanent damage. This situation will only be an issue during large data migration and not during normal use. Second caution to SSD owners: Always have a backup for your SSD. I know it means buying extra SSD storage, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Do not ever rely on just single layer of protection. Always back up everything on a second drive.

Solved a Big Issue for Me – Ended up Buying a 2nd One

Update 02-20-24:After using this drive for a few months, I ended up buying a second one. That’s the best recommendation a product can get.Because somebody asked if this drive would be a good storage medium for scheduling their backups to, I want to clarify that is exactly what I’m using it for. It syncs with my Dropbox cloud storage, so that whatever I have in my Dropbox is always also physically on my drive.-=–Original Review:I am a creative and I rely heavily on Dropbox cloud storage. My Dropbox currently has over 2 TBs of content in it. But, my laptop only has 512 GBs of SSD storage on it.I have this external SSD drive connected to my laptop via its USB C port, and my Dropbox set to sync to the external SSD drive…The syncing is flawless. I’m extremely happy with this drive and the problems it solved for me.My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 7000 series 2n1, for anybody who has a similar situation going on.By the way, this drive is very rugged, has a sort of rubberized feel to it that is nice and not slippery, and is surprisingly slim and small…elegant actually.Highly recommend.

    Maravilloso

Nunca he tenido problemas con él. Lo único que extraño con respecto a otros modelos, es que no tiene un espacio o algo para guardar el cable. De no ser por esto, lo podrías cargar en el bolsillo a donde quiera que vayas.

Best Portable SSD I have owned

I purchased this Samsung T7 Shield in October of 2023. It has performed amazingly for me. I have it formatted to APFS because I record videos on my iPhone 15 Pro and edit them on a Macbook Pro (For Mac users, formatting to APFS will allow the drive to perform better with Apple devices. I also do not intend to use this drive with a windows machine) I edit 4k videos directly from the drive with no issue. I appreciate that when I attach it to my devices, it is always quick to be recognized and never gives me issues when moving files.I also use this SSD for school. With 2 TB to work with, I have yet to fill up this drive. Great gift for college students or young tech-savvy individuals.

Great for Mac Studio Lightroom Classic users!!

High-volume professional photographer here. I use a 4TB T7 to store RAW files being edited in Lightroom Classic on my M2 Mac Studio Ultra. The T7 was a WAY better deal than increasing the Studio’s internal storage config when buying it. I import/export hundreds of RAW files on a daily basis, and it’s not much slower than using internal storage…we’re talking a few seconds’ difference in an import/export type situation involving a few hundred RAW files. My editing workflow is unaffected, I can’t tell the difference between editing on internal storage and the T7.I regularly edit Canon R6, Fuji XT5, Fuji GFX 100, Leica Q2, and Leica SL RAWs on the T7 with zero complaints.I do a little video work and have dabbled with editing 4K footage in Final Cut Pro off my T7…scrubbing and rendering stabilization seems a little slower/choppier but not annoyingly so. But it is noticably slower. I prefer to use my Studio’s 2TB internal storage for video editing, and the T7 for my photo editing workflow.I imagine PC users with appropriately spec’ed machines would also have a similar experience. Then again PC users can also just install larger, faster internal SSDs if they needed more storage soooo….For Mac users with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 ports, this is a great, affordable way to expand your storage.

    A review for low-tech non-expert users

This review is for a Samsung 2TB Portable SSD T7 Shield, it being one of three possibilities that I spent much time researching online and at Amazon Comments. The research was a painful process as I’m not a high tech IT person, so (i) much of the detail was over my head, and (ii) I found widely varying positive and negative reviews. This review is an attempt to help someone like me.1. Storage of 2 TB is enough for most light-user purposes, especially if you store your photos in the cloud and are not a user who needs higher TB for e.g. gaming, music or video production.2. The 2 TB unit is almost exactly the size of a plastic credit card, but about 6 times as thick (13 mm = 0.5 inch). It’s not heavy so easy to take anywhere.3. The unit comes with two cables to attach to your computer. One described as C to A fits into old-style USB slots on your computer, the other is C to C, which gives much faster data transfer speed and fits more modern computers. So, whatever the age of your computer, unless it’s truly ancient, you are covered.4. The cords are long enough for use on a laptop on a desk or, say, an aircraft seat table. They are not long enough for a larger computer, especially if you have it standing vertically on a desk. Alternative longer cables are easy to find online or in shops.5. Gamers etc. with very high rates of use report that their T7s reach high temps. My T7 does get warm in use, but not worryingly so, going up only about 8°F.6. The T7 has a protective coating that gives a rated level of dust, water and drop protection. Some reviews note that it’s impossible to write on the coating or attach an ID sticker to it. If you have several T7s that’s a problem; it’s not for people with just one.7. The T7 is sold as ‘ready to go out of the box’ for Mac, Windows and Android computers and comes with an Installation Guide and Warranty Statement in 36 languages so has global reach. However, it provides little useful info for first installation and use – (for that search online, there are good guides there) – but it does walk you through the detail of password protecting the T7 if you want to do that. It’s somewhat complicated. Do not forget your password, as without it you will not ever be able to access your data.8. The warranty is 3 years duration. Register the Warranty at Samsung online. Use the numbers on one end of the T7, not the numbers on the pack. They are micro-font. You will need 20/20 vision.9. My first use with a C to A cable was slow because of (i) the old style slow speed cable, (ii) my 8 year old laptop and I guess (iii) the various clever things that the T7 was doing. Subsequent backups have been much faster.10. Other reviewers give detail on up and down-load speeds and waste space inside the 2 TB because of the way the T7 partitions data. This is important for high tech users, it’s not for me, simply wanting the safety of regular back-ups.11. After 3 weeks use, yes I would purchase again. Time will tell the longer story.

    Works flawlessly

I’ve used the T7 drive for a couple months. It’s plug-and-play. It has worked perfectly from the moment I hooked it up to my iMac M1. When I first installed it, I transferred about 430 GB of data from a clunky old outboard hard disk drive via the iMac. That transfer took maybe 40 minutes. No hiccups; smooth and steady operation. All files tranferred are fully accessible. Since setup, I’ve left the T7 connected. No need to mount or dismount the drive when starting up or shutting down. It might as well be a built-in. And the T7 is at least as fast as the built-in SSD, if not faster. I’ve had no problems whatsoever. Easy to use. Lots of storgage space. Great value. I could not be happier. Highly recommended.

Business Use – Works great so far.

We backup our business files weekly using this drive. When we go on vacation we put it in our safe incase anything happens to our laptop. Plenty of storage for our needs. Thinking of getting another to store family photos and data separate from our business data. If we do it will be this same kind.

    Small but powerful

I had an issue with a previous external storage that led me to buy this after recommendations from friends, and have had a better experience. I’m able to write and load what content I need for music work quickly and not worry about a minor shift in the cable resulting in a disconnect on most occasions, but I was able to reconnect fairly quickly on the small times I did have that happen without a proper “eject”.Quality product.

I use it live running Lightroom Catalogs with 100’s to 1000’s of images. I run a Mac mini, M2Pro and this combination is extremely fast. Probably going to get another one.

    This thing is incredible

I can’t attest to it being better compared to other SSDs in terms of write or read speed as I have no idea. What I DO KNOW is that this thing is cheap, compact, rugged, and meets my data storage needs. I got the 4TB model and sheesh the thing literally fits in the palm of my hand. Also, most of the advertised 4TB is useable. My other external (this one a HDD) is 6TB but I think I only get to use 5.45 of it. I don’t quite remember how much of the 4TB isn’t available but I remember it being minimal and noninvasive. Additionally, the proprietary software you have to install to make it work can be described similarly. With my Seagate HDD, the Seagate software pretty much has to be launched on start up (can be closed after launch, including terminating background tasks) for the drive to work but with this little guy, I’ve never had any drive recognition problems nor issues with read/write tasks. I will say this, with the caveat that my experience is likely unrelated to the SSD, when I got the drive, shortly after I started having issues where every single USB port on my computer would stop working, regardless of whether they were direct to the motherboard, on the front of the case, or in the USB hub. All the ports randomly brick from time to time, couldn’t tell you why but it only started happening once I got the drive. Can be fixed with a power cycle, and yes, my power supply is adequate for all my USB devices

A decent substitute for the Sandisk 4TB Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2 until Sandisk fixes them…

I do a lot of backups, and I’ve been backing up computers to hard drives for a very long time. As different external drives move to prominence, I move to them. Samsung SSDs I had used as internal drives, but the first class of SSD I used for external drives were the Sandisk 4TB Extreme Pro V1 & V2 portable SSDs. These drives were absolutely phenomenal! I literally bought a dozen of them over many years. But then, in the past 18 months or so, Sandisk released a bad batch of them that lost user data! So until they fixed the issue, I couldn’t risk buying one, so I tried the Rugged T7 – which seems like the closest substitute. It’s a fine drive to compare to the old Extremes. It’s a little bigger and heavier, but that’s because it’s rugged, and I love that. I love the rubber feel. Samsung generously gives you two full cables to use with it – one with USB-A and one with USB-C. The packaging was really cool, but I’m one of those people who likes to store the drive and cable in the original packaging, and the box is pretty huge for that. This isn’t an issue at all if you want to just store the drive separately. So why do I only consider this a good drive until Sandisk gets back on their feet again? Simply because it’s a lot slower than the Extremes. For people coming from rotating disks, they will be very impressed, but this is more like a gen1 SSD drive. Using an APFS formatted volume with USB-C and an Apple M1 Max laptop, on BlackMagic I consistently got 825 MB/second read and 633 MB/second write. With the Extreme, I never dropped below 1,000. (Except in real world transfers, where everyone falls and seek rates are more important.)I haven’t done a backup yet with one of these and my M1 Max, so as soon as I do, I’ll update this with a comparison. But so far, this looks to be a fine drive. And It’s OK fast – going faster is more of a luxury item. Since I cannot at the moment recommend Sandisk drives due to the huge scandal, I whole heartedly recommend this Samsung rugged T7 as the next best thing. And it’s at a great price, too – I got the 4TB for just $250. I guess with that in mind, being slower is fine. :)Fingers crossed that companies will solve the technology issues that have been holding back 8TB drives.

    Close to perfection

I loved my T7 but I only had the 500GB version so I gave this a try. Is practically the same as the basic T7 with some improvements as the rough design, great for working on the go, and the new built in protection cover. Heat dissipation is good, not incredible, but the drive haven’t gotten too hot even with heavy workflows. The only big flaw I still had to face was the compatibility with Mac OS, in which I had to format the drive with the Apple format in order to get a better speed (ExFAT could go to 200-300mbps vs 600 – 700mbps with MacOS format). So I can only work across the Apple Ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, Mac).Summing, if you’re looking for something small enough to work everywhere with a laptop and, if you are an Apple user and you don’t care about working across multiple platforms, this is your drive.

Fastest USB 3.x Gen 2 “in the real world” I’ve tested

Samsung doesn’t say what type of flash this is (TLC/MLC/SLC/QLC/PLC, etc) but I’m guessing TLC or QLC, nor endurance ratings to try to estimate.Regardless, this is the fastest USB device I’ve tested (I’m easily able to get 800MiB/s that quickly ramps up toward the theoretical limit near 1GiB/s).I was able to get full speed on both USB-C and USB-A (I’ve had some NVMe enclosures that are faster on C than A), and the cables it came with seem to be high quality. I didn’t have any issues with power consumption (some NVMe drives draw more than the port can handle and reset). The outer coating is that really nice soft/smooth rubbery feeling stuff (no idea how that’s going to hold up as a portable external drive) but it does feel like it could probably absorb some shock if dropped. If I needed another one I would buy again. It’s probably not really a thing (since it might require too much extra hardware to make happen), but it’d be nice if it included an extra port for PD passthrough.

    These drives are great

I use the drives to offload games for my Xbox when I run out of room. The transfer speeds to and from the drive are excellent. I have some other drives that I also use, but those slow to a crawl after 5 – 10 GBs. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the Samsung drive slow down. And some of these games are over 100 GB.

Liked it so much I bought a second one

Bought one and liked it so much I went back to Amazon a few days later and bought another! Worked right out of the box on my iMac Intel I-7, and also on my M-1 MacBook Pro. No software glitches whatever. Reinforces my high regard for products that bear the Samsung name. One of the things that impresses me with electronic products is the packaging; I take that to be an indication of how much the manufacturer thought of the overall quality of the device – if they spend a lot of time designing quality packaging, then I believe they put the same care into the product itself. The little box was very nicely designed with an inner tray for the drive and a compartment for the included cables, each cable having a chipboard ‘tube’ to hold it, as opposed to those twist-ties seen so frequently on cords and cables. Another plus in my experience with the Samsung drive. The box contains a user manual, quite thick but only the first few pages are relevant if you use English; there are many other languages in the instructions. Box included two short attachment tables, USB-A to the drive which is USB-C; and USB-C to the drive. Providing two cables is a very nice touch, particularly at this price-point.The outer cover of the drive is a soft rubber-like material, protecting it against bumps and drops, and giving it some grip when you put it on a table next to the computer. The drive is very compact and rugged, a nice laptop accessory for traveling. All in all I’m impressed with the quality and value for this product, 1tb storage, and its rugged compact form-factor. For the record, I purchased both these drives being reviewed.

I abuse this thing (not on purpose) pretty terribly occasionally and it’s given me no issues (dogs chewed on it, dropped it, kicked it, left it outside overnight) . The transfer speed is awesome. Fast, compact and soft to touch materials.

Recently, I have lost all my data in my MacBook decided to buy portable SSD (cause, they are obviously faster than cheaper flash drives or HDDs) and my choice fell to Samsung. Didn’t expected it to be that comfortable on touch, the material is not plastic, it’s soft rubber. Also, love how compact and portable it is to carry around with myself. You can just throw it to your pocket and forget about space.

    Impossible to label the drive!

Love my T7! But what is this drive wrapped in? Silicone? Rubber? My labels don’t stick to it. Nothing sticks! Samsung would make a killing if they made a special label for it that you can buy or that actually comes with the drive. Or Maybe add a space on it that you can put a label or add a small surface to write on.

Random reads are slow enough to make Windows freeze while viewing folders

I bought the 4 TB version of this drive to replace a USB enclosure + 2 TB 860 evo, as I was running out of space with that. Its primary purpose is to host Kontakt libraries and other things like that, fast temporary space and lots of streaming files from all over the drive. Copying files to and from it achieves the advertised speeds, sequential is good, but random reads are horrid. Crystal Disk mark says that with a queue depth of 1 the read speeds can degrade to an absurd 13 MB/s. I appreciate that random reads are not as fast as sequential ones, but they should not be over 20 times slower on an SSD! Worth noting is that when the queue depth goes up to the unreasonable 32, the random reads perform just as well as you’d expect them to, close to the sequential speeds. So the NAND itself can certainly respond fast enough. Ever since I set this up I noticed that whenever I would go browsing the folder tree and land in some folder I hadn’t viewed yet, my file manager, which is an alternative that is much faster than Windows Explorer, would downright hang for a second while it read the directory. My 8 TB mechanical doesn’t do that. The EVO didn’t do that. This is NTFS, not EXFAT, so the file system shouldn’t be the problem here. And I’m not displaying thumbnails or anything of the sort, so it’s not like reading that folder is resulting in an absolute spike of reads to display it. And attempting to use it as a Kontakt sample drive results in Kontakt being completely unable to stream things fast enough, which causes constant drop-outs in the middle of sounds. I’m kind of in a bind as I gave away the prior 2 TB drive, so even if I want to return this I don’t currently have a place to put all the data that’s already on it. Firmware is updated. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed, I certainly would prefer to continue recommending Samsung as the King of SSD!

    Samsung T7 Shield 4TB

It is compact, fast and reliable. I have been using many different types and brands of SSDs and so far, other than the “no brand” knockoffs, those branded ones lasts me at least 5 years or safe to say, they are still working fine. That is why I don’t bother much about warranty. Of all these drives, Samsung SSDs are usually among the fastest, especially when plugged in using a Type-C connector, sometimes the speed can be double the Type-A connector.
