Description

From the manufacturer

Sony 4-105mm Lens

Advanced optics achieve consistently high corner-to-corner resolution throughout the zoom range. Four aspherical elements effectively reduce aberration, while ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements minimize chromatic aberration. A circular aperture and carefully controlled spherical aberration shape add expressive potential with beautiful, smooth background bokeh and natural highlights that complement outstanding in-focus sharpness and clarity.

Excellent optical performance and a high zoom ratio are packed into a compact, lightweight design weighing only 23.4 oz (663 g). The design extends to E-mount bodies for outstanding system mobility and handling ease. This one high-performance lens lets you shoot a wide range of subjects and situations. A minimum focus distance of 1.25 ft (0.38 m) and built-in optical image stabilization further enhance all-around versatility.

A bright, constant F4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range keeps the brightness even when focal length is changed. Sony’s Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) AF drive system offers fast, precise and quiet focusing. A precision optical design minimizes focus breathing. All of this makes the FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS an excellent choice for both stills and movies.

A fluorine coating on the front element prevents contaminants such as oils, grime, and water from sticking to the front of the lens, and makes them easier to remove if they do become attached to the lens surface. A dust and moisture resistant design and customizable focus hold button further contribute to professional operability and reliability.

  1. Mr. X

    4.0 out of 5 stars

    Good all around lens.

This is an excellent all around lens for the Sony full frame Alpha system. Not too heavy with a good range of focal lengths. I ultimately returned it for the 24-70 f/2.8 Sony GM lens which gives up some reach but has slightly better build quality, faster aperture, and what seems like faster auto-focus. If you want only one lens, the 24-105 might be it if you can work with f/4.

    great lens

i have three lenses… one for wide angle, one for middle use and one for long shooting. this isnt their highest end lens but it does a great job for most applications. it does a great job. remember one thing… time is the essentially the most important part of taking a sharp photo (with caveats to that). the longer you allow the lens to capture a photo the better the shot will generally be in depth and sharpness. if you handhold and use the features of your camera you can end up with great results.

Terrible, out-dated lens of limited usefulness due to peripheral softness

I bought and returned two of these. The first was damaged during shipping, and I thought that explained the poor image quality and consistently out-of-focus on the left. The second lens (undamaged) was the same! While this has a great and usable focal length range, this 5-year old lens has good center sharpness, but anything in the periphery is terrible. It might be OK for portrait photography (ONLY). It is ridiculously bad at shorter focus distances, say 1 meter or less. There, it is utterly unusable. Seriously, I get better pictures from a 10-year old APS-C 50mm prime on my Sony a7 IV. It’s really a toss-up to just using clear image zoom on a wider lens.Buy this for its focal range and if you do portrait photography and don’t care about anything beyond the center 1/3 of the frame. Otherwise pass. The performance of this lens is just too limited. This lens is in serious need of an update to a G2. At $1400, this lens is a joke. I would look for non-Sony alternatives. Conversely, if Sony redesigns this better, I’d be all over it. Their newer lenses like my 1224GM and P1635G are just unbelievable.

    Perfect travel lens

Spent a lot of time reviewing lenses for my new a7iv purchase and glad I decided to go with the 24-105, this lens is a little big, but when traveling it is the one and done lens you need to move from portraits to landscape with ease. Very pleased with this lens and the build quality is outstanding

Solidly built and unusually sharp for a zoom

This photo, of an FM station’s transmitting antenna, is cropped from one shot 500 feet away, using this lens on a Sony a7R camera. The lens and camera both replace a much-loved Canon 5D Mark III and a zoom lens with identical specs. This Sony lens is smaller, lighter and tighter than the Canon equivalent; and it produces much sharper images. It’s my new all-around workhorse, and I recommend it highly.

Best all-around lens for most Sony Mirrorless cameras

I have this and the GM100-400 lens, but this is the lens I use most of the time on my A7r iv. It’s a lot lighter than the 100-400, and more of the photos I like to take fit within the zoom range of this lens. Since it’s black rather than white, it tends to not draw as much attention from others – which is helpful when traveling. It’s not the only lens you should have, but it is a lens you SHOULD have.

    Great for video

I have every expensive lens you can get and this is the one I keep on my camera for video and many candid style photos. It isn’t an amazing portrait lens, but if you’re not looking for something super crazy professional it will work for photos and video.Nothing compares for its video quality and ease of use, though. If you’re looking for a good video walk about lens this one will not do you wrong

A great lens in this zoom range

I have used various 24-70 and 24-105 lenses, and this one is excellent. Image quality is outstanding even into the extreme corners at all focal lenghts, albeit with some noticeable lateral chromatic aberration, but even then well controlled. 24 is usually quite soft in the corners with these zooms, but this one is surprisingly sharp at full wide. Contrast also very good. The excellent image stabilization is a big plus, especially for video.

    Excellent go to zoom

Bought this to replace the zeiss lens which is apps 300 – 400 $ cheaper. Was having issues with that lens with focus and sharpness of images. Decided to bite the bullet and get this after reading multiple reviews. Great lens. Images are sharp and without noticeable distortion. Its heavier than the prior lens I had but worth it for the extra features (including ability to switch manually between AF and MF on the lens body.

    Pretty good

I replaced my 28-70mm lens with this 24-105mm f4 lens. I like it a lot more than the kit lens. It’s definitely an upgrade. It takes decent pictures even with the f4 aperture. The pictures are clear and I love the zoom capability. It has a switch that makes going from auto focus to manual focus very easy and quick. It was really good pictures of pets or portraits. Doing action shots is pretty good with this lens. For star photography, I’d prefer a lower aperture but overall, this is a great go-to lens

Jack of all – Decent lens that does the all rounded work

Do you need 24-70 and 70-105 range in one les?Are you mainly into day time photography? Are you looking for one stop shop travel lens?Answer to any of the above is yes. Go for this lens. It’s great and sharp and the zoom range is great. It weighs around1.46 lbs, slightly bulky due to the range and image stabilizationThis is perfect if you’re into day time video as it has nice image stabilization. However, if you’re looking at shallow focus, you might not get it. Also night time could be a challenge unless you bump up the ISO.

    Outstanding

This is a wonderful lens. I have been using it for landscape photos and as a walk-about lens. It rarely comes off my Sony A7 iv. The picture quality has been everything I was hoping for and more. My one quibble is that there is some vignetting at 24mm. I knew this going in, so to me, it is still 5 stars.

Amazing lens, but hit the weights to help carry it.

I love this lens. My family goes hiking and travels the outdoors/PNW in good weather. This is on an a7c and will be the lens for daytime snaps. The zoom is just enough, and the 24-45 range looks great for general people and places pictures. You won’t get ‘creamy backgrounds’ but you can get just enough blur to make your subject stand out/be separated, but it also does a great job with scenery. Takes mighty fine videos as well. I wouldn’t really use this indoors unless it is a very well-lit situation (conferences/corporate/custom projects)For reference, we own the a7c WITHOUT a kit lens. We went straight for this lens and the FE 35mm 1.8 G (which is amazingly awesome).Previous experience: Intermediate level artistry and everyday photography on a Nikon D90 with 35mm 1.8 and 18-105mm. Used it to death until we picked up the a7c (and yes, the D90 still produced superb images that rivaled the best smart phones in 2021).

    This lens does it all

The 24-105 G master lens has become one of my favorite lenses. I used to have the 24-70mm and I find that the 24-105 range is much more practical. Although the 24-105 is the heaviest lens I have, I find that it is still fairly light, and it eliminates the need to carry around multiple lenses since it is so versatile. A wonderful bonus is that it can focus pretty close for some nice macro shots. The lens is also very snappy with lightning fast autofocus, the focus is fast even in low light situations. The image quality is spectacular and ultra sharp at all focal lengths. I love that it has a customizable button on the side, that it has optical image stabilization, and that it is weather sealed. I love using this lens.

    Good but not great

As with most Sony camera lenses, it is well constructed and sturdy. This is my fourth Sony lens. The other three lenses are magnificent. Focussing on them is super-fast and reliable. The FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS not so much. Still images come out well at most focal length. However, all of the moving images I have taken have missed the mark 90% of the time, mostly focussing on the wrong spot (inaccurate face/object recognition and/or subsequent tracking). Regardless of setting the shutter speed much faster than should be necessary. It might be a focus calibration problem, but that doesn’t explain why non-moving subjects always focus correctly and yield sharp images. I am not inclined to give up on the lens because it is such a useful focal range for everyday use. Maybe I am expecting too much from it, or maybe i just need to keep plugging away to overcome the focussing issue.

    Best lens I carry

I’ve enjoyed this lens over the last 8 months and find it rarely ever comes off my A7iii. The lens is not too heavy, feels well balanced in the hand so it’s comfortable to use on road trips or hiking. The photos are exceptional, always sharp, with great bokeh, excellent stability, and a fast focus. It definitely brings out the best the Sony A7iii can provide! I can’t recommend it more and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

    Nothing to complain about.

IQ surpasses my L series 24-105 and autofocus using my A7R2 was fast and spot on.I know people make a big deal about the stabilization, and undoubtedly it works fine, but if I’m shooting low-light I’m not taking an f4 lens so doesn’t really apply to my situation. There’s some heft to the lens but my background comes from large full frame Canons with heavy lens and a battery grip so weight isn’t usually an issue. If your coming from APS-C territory then your experience my differ quite a bit.

You can buy a similar focal length lens for half the price from some manufacturers. You get what you pay for and this is an outstanding quality lens. If you are serious enough to buy a full frame camera, you should get a good lens for it. You will not regret getting a lens like this one.

Listed as “ like new”, so I purchased it. Packaging was horrible for a lens without a box. Unpacked it and it looked great. Put it on my camera and tried to zoom. Grinded slowly as I tried to turn the zoom ring. Do they not check lens functionality? Extremely disappointing!

    Nice but a bit pricey.

This is a very nice lens that covers a good focal range. I’m only an amateur but even I can get great color and sharpness out of this lens. I’ve paired it with a Sony A7II. It is a bit on the pricey side. If I was too buy again in this focal range, I would probably look to Sigma or Tamron.

    Worth every penny spent!!!

It’s a pro-level lens that offers an outstanding optical performance that’s consistent throughout the entirety of its focal range and very few 24-105mm f/4 lenses can truly claim this. The lens delivers impressive image quality that is only rivaled by the much heavier and more expensive Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens. Sharpness is consistent throughout the focal length and bokeh is pretty smooth and satisfying.

Superb lens. Highly recommend it for Sony a7iii

I have never spent over a $1000 on a lens until now. As long as I’m already spending the money on a superb camera, Sony a7iii, it didn’t make any sense to buy a mediocre lens for. After some considerable reviews, I decided on this Sony 24-105mm OSS as my first lens with a high probability that it remains as my primary lens down the road. My first impression was that this lens was HUGE. As with any camera lens, I strongly advised purchasing a UV filter. The filter size for lens is 72mm, considerably larger then my old Canon lens filter. It felt like it weighed more than the camera body. The larger the lens, e more photons it can pick up. The better the lens quality, the sharper the image. Together, it makes a superb lens. So far I used this lens to take photos of my daughter soccer games while sitting high up in the bleachers, taking photos of family activities, group photos, everyday street activities, macro shots of dragon flies and flowers. photos taken indoors without flash, and outdoors under various lighting conditions, Photos of my daughter soccer games after cropping to zoom in on the subjects looked surprisingly sharp. I can honestly say that all of the photos I’ve taken so far have been very impressive. I attributed that to the camera and the lens. The OSS Keep the image steady even under low lighting. There are times when taking photos with a flash is prohibited or not optimal, the stabilization feature on this lens is the best I’ve seen so far. Professional reviewers said as much and I can see why. I still rely on my tripod for long exposure shooting. Can’t see myself holding the camera on a subject for when doing long exposure such as that of the night landscape. Do I recommend the lens. The answer is YES, YES, and YES. Is it worth the money? The answer again is a resounding yes. Do I think the lens is expensive? I do. It is definitely not cheap. There are other lens companies such as Tamron that also make good lenses that can potentially be cheaper than this Sony lens. I however chose this over all others because of the overwhelming I read about it. Another thing to consider is that not all lenses are suited for every shooting situations. You have to think about what you primary use it for then pick a lens that best suited for it.

    Excellent lens

This is a fantastic walk-around lens for the Sony system. Image quality is very high for such a lightweight and compact lens. I also own the Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM, which is awesome, but is very large and seems like it weighs twice as much as the 24-105. The GM does produce slightly better image quality, but only slightly. For a walk-around all day lens, the 24-105 is ideal. The f/4 maximum is fine for most purposes and obviously allows for the smaller size and weight. I get great images with the literal pain in the neck I get from the GM. I’m super impressed with this lens. If I could have only one lens for my a7riii, I would choose this 24-105 over the f/2.8 GM for both cost and comfort.

I make my living with cameras and lenses. (My purchase of this lens was from nearby dealer)

I’ve been doing photography for almost 45 years.I’ve made my living with it for 32 years.I’ve used Nikon (film and digital) Canon (film) Hasselblad V (film and digital)Large format etc…This lens is great. It’s got some distortion sure, but in this age they design things to work with the digital darkroom tools. The only issue I have with my sample is a slight blue corner in the upper right at the wide setting… it hasn’t been an insurmountable issue. I am a Sony Pro member, I guess I should have had them look at it, but I’m too busy just making images for a living to fret over it.I used to (Nikon shooting) thing the f2.8 zoom lenses were the only way to go (had to be that way when 100 speed slide film was the rule!) Now the f4 zooms of Sony are serving me great (70-200 f4 has no faults). The weight savings of the lighter lenses and Sony bodies have cured my tennis elbow. In the end, I do use the Zeiss Batis 85mm F 1.8 more than this lens. For video work and ‘run and gun’ assignment work this is great. I’ve shot it (with fill) into the setting sun at a wedding and it captured the bride’s soft hair and dress details beyond expectations of 15 years ago using Nikkors.Hope this helps, it’s worth every penny compared to a $2400 f2.8 Nikkor.

The One Lens you should definitely carry in your kit.

If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t like swapping lenses constantly, this is your lens. A Solid all-rounder with clean, crisp sharpness all the way through the zoom range, solid AF performance, and a fantastic build quality.PROS: Well built, sharp, crisp, quick to AF, sturdy, solid all-purpose lens. Only very mild vignetting when full-open, barely noticeable. F4 may Sound like a slower lens, but on a full frame camera, you’ll still be left with a paper-thin focal plane at that aperture setting. Great BOKEHCONS: Not the world’s best macro range, though it’s sharp enough that if you pair this with a big-sensor camera like the A7R4’s 61 megapixel monster, you can get some great performance in the crop.

New to photography and loving it

I did not purchase this lens from Amazon.I am a novice, I have always wanted to be a photographer I just never could afford getting into it. Well after long time of saving I purchased a Sony A7II with a kit lens. I was sort of happy with it. I went to large retailer and got this lens for 800 on sale. And wow my friends and family can’t believe I just started in photography. I love this lens, I received my camera on 12/22/20 and have gone out many times just to get photos and I’m very pleased. From going up into a blizzard, or going to another mountain range nearby, or just going out for a ride with friends this thing has taken a lot of photos in a very short time. I honestly feel that I don’t know enough about photography to really give this lens any negative remarks.

Great lens for Photos not so good for handheld video

Happy with the images it produces; very sharp for a zoom lens. However, image stabilization does not work great for handheld video — it just eliminates the micro jitters.

    f/4 is Enough.

Get this lens, a few nice primes, maybe a telephoto zoom as well, and you’re all set.And honestly, it makes me a little sad to say that. Researching and buying lenses is fun, so I’m almost kind of bummed that I feel like I’m all set now in a way. But I really feel like I am. I’m just super content with having this in the bag alongside a few nice primes and a 70-180.If you need a faster lens, throw a prime on. If you want to completely obliterate the background with some bokeh, throw a prime on. If you’re like me, I think you’ll find that you throw the primes on less frequently than you expect. You can still get some great bokeh with this lens. And I mean GREAT.It’s just such a versatile lens, and makes the travel experience less about fiddling with gear and more about just experiencing your surroundings, which actually can lead to better photo opps. It’s light enough to carry all day. Would I call it a compact? Not quite. It’s a substantial piece of equipment, but it’s not cumbersome. It’s only slightly larger than my 35mm GM, which is kind of shocking when you consider it’s versatility. I’m happy. This is a fantastic tool to have in the bag.And I know what you’re thinking. Will you feel like you’re selling yourself short versus the 24-70 GM? I honestly don’t think so. The 24-70 2.8 is awesome, but it’s not noticeably sharper than this. Really all you’re gaining there would be the speed… and think about it. The 24-70 GM is not practical to carry around all day. You might think you can swing it, and you can, but that’s not the same as saying it’s practical. So where does that leave you if you go with the 24-70? You end up with a moderately fast BEAST of a lens that you’re only going to use when you’re carrying a bag of gear with you. Or while you’re at home. Or while you’re at the studio. In those instances, I’d personally much rather use primes. As a versatile, sharp zoom lens, this is the one I want to take out and explore with. It has a clear purpose, and it executes that purpose beautifully.I love the color rendering. I love the sharpness. I love the build quality. I’m stoked to have this lens, even if it puts a premature end to my lens acquisition syndrome. Guess I’ll just deal with the withdrawal by looking at lighting equipment…

    Worth the money

I’ve tried using Canons 24-105 lens on the Sony FX3 with an EF to E adapter but after renting the Sony 24-105 I was convinced to buy the Sony lens. Stabilization is far better and auto focusing is more responsive and more accurate. Lens build quality is also pretty good. Although I love a good prime lens there’s a lot more flexibility in a well built zoom. It’s worth the money.

    Totally worth it.

I was on the fence with this lens based off of the online reviews, but as soon as I began to shoot with it I fell in love with it. Range and image quality is great. F4 is perfect especially out doors and and greater focal lengths. I also shoot with Canon and I like this so much more than my Canon 24-105 RF. I highly recommend this lens.

This is an amazing lens. It’s incredibly sharp, quick to autofocus and silent. You’ll be looking for chances just to use it. Exceptional !!

    Great general purpose lens

Great walk around lens. This will work until I can add the 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 to my arsenal.

    “Sharp” but not “Sweet”

After I shot a film with this lens, I realized that sharpness is not the most important thing, especially when the sharpness and contrast are excessive! To my surprise, I could not understand why this lens does not satisfy me! There is no softness and warmth and vital energy in this lens! I liked the cheaper lenses even more! For example “Zeiss 24-70 f4” or Sony Kit Lens 28-70 f4Sorry for my English!
