    great replacement

My cameras lens broke and this one was a perfect replacement. It was by far the best price and even though it was used, it was still in great shape!

    Great lens

This is my go-to lens for daily shooting. It’s fast and simple and great for everything but super low light, and I have an f1.8 for that.

    NOT the lens pictured

This is a fine little kit zoom, but it is NOT the lens pictured here. The lens pictured is the Oly 14-42mm II R lens (newer and much faster at focusing). The lens being sold is the 14-42mm II. Again, a fine lens, but beware of the image.

A GREAT VALUE – shouldn’t be compared to a $400 lens, but doesn’t need any apologies!

Many have compared it – unfired – to dedicated prime lenses on DSLRs costing hundreds of dollars more. I wouldn’t do that, and I didn’t expect that level of quality when I purchased it. I’m still holding on to my DSLR. But the Olympus E series of cameras is all about convenience – with the option of upgrading to DSLR levels.I have been using this lens for over a month now – and overall, I am very, very pleased with the quality of the snapshots – not gallery photographs – that I have taken with it. There are two images attached – the first is wide-open at 14mm using the Program setting where the camera selects aperture/shutter speed (here, F11 1/200). The second image, of an azalea is a 20% crop of the total image(!) shot with the macro setting, with the lens at ~35mm. Not bad for a lens under 100 bucks, eh?Quiet, quick to focus, small, light, and surprisingly sharp for a lens that is retailing for about a hundred bucks from third party vendors. As the commercial reviewers have noted, edges are not completely sharp at certain focal lengths, and there is minor – very minor – chromatic aberration and blurring of images blown up over 8×10. But I have images from day trips and a recent vacation stored on my computer that look absolutely stunning. I have also shot many pictures, and some video in my classroom of students and their work under florescent light that look great. Some have complained about Olympus/Zuiko’s lens lock/unlock switch, but I’ve found that after several days of use it became second nature to me and became a non-issue. Do make sure that your seller verifies and sends the newest model iiR, which is stamped right on the lens barrel – this newest model focusses incredibly fast.Bottom line: it’s a great value. Expect no more or less than a very good point and shoot lens. If you like your camera, consider upgrading to a better dedicated prime lens. But if you’re looking for a lens to throw on to a body and throw into a day pack, look no further. This is it.

It is a kit lens, get with the camera, but I would not just buy it.

I got the Olympus Pen EPM2 kit and it came with this lens.PROS:1. A big positive for this lens, is the small size. This lens is tiny, the pictures do not let you understand how small this lens is.2. It covers a very useful range, 14MM (28MM on 35mm film) is, too me, very wide, if you like wide photography you can get started here. Then when you move into 17MM that is about 35MM in 35mm film, this is one of the most popular fields of view. Try the lens at 17MM and see if you are a 35MM fov person. Next we jump to 25MM, which is akin to 50MM, the other most popular lens field of view. Using this lens I found that I like the 50MM perspective. Finally you can jump to 42MM which is about 85MM on 35mm film. 85MM fov is very good for portraits of people.3. The lens starts up immediately with the camera, and focuses instantly. Speed is not an issue here.4. Sharpness is pretty good. It is a kit lens but you will get good pictures with it.There are no cons with this lens, only people must understand the limitations of this lens. It has a normal kit lens aperture, it is a slow lens, not fast, but in bright days you want to use f5.6 to f8 anyway so you will have no issues. If you are in museum or your house with low lights, this lens will not be very good. The aperture cannot open enough to let in light in these low light situations. Finally on a personal note, I do not like zoom lenses, I do not like having to twist the lens and zoom in and out, I like Prime lenses, I like on fov and working within the limitation. Having said that though, the lens is smooth to operate and has a good feel when zooming, unlike the Olympus 40-150MM which has a very tight feel, and can be hard to zoom with.If you are getting a new Olympus camera, and you can get this lens. get it, if you do not have this lens but already have an Olympus camera, I would just look at getting good primes, or one of the two (Olympus and Panasonic) kit electric zooms. The electric zooms are optically the same, yet are even more compact.*Extra Review. I feel I was too hard on this lens when I wrote this review. I shot with lens today, generally at aperture 5.6 to 8. I got some good pictures. I would say that at f8, it is surprising how many lenses look very similar. Or should I say, that with modern camera lenses, at f8 there are not many bad lenses. This is nice lens, it covers a good range, I found myself going from 14 to 17 to 25 and and finally 42. And I find that I like pictures best at 25MM, or 50MM fov when talking about 35MM film. This is a good lens to understand how to take pictures with different focal lengths. This lens is one of the best lenses for use to understand what lenses to buy next. So I would actaully give the lens rating of 4 stars, for value and for usefulness.

    Very Nice kit lens

PROS: Actually very happily surprised for a “kit” lens. For the price (~ $50 purchased with EPL-7) the performance of this zoom lens is actually noteworthy. It is relatively sharp across its entire zoom range (28 – 84mm SLR/DSLP full frame equivalent). There is a little vignetting on wide shots but this is usually not noticeable. Autofocus speed with this lens is good. Has a pleasing bokeh with some diffraction artifacts (see night shot). Flare is well handled.CONS: The lens is all plastic construction, including the hardware that mates with the camera. The lens has to be extended to work (so you can’t point-and-shoot unless you leave it extended). In high contrast scenes there is very noticeable chromatic aberration.Overall – very useful lens and MUCH cheaper and smaller than the PRO 12-40mm F2.8…at least you can practice with this one and decide if the zoom range is adequate for your needs before shelling out serious $$$$ for its higher end cousin (see my review on this one). For me this zoom lens range is almost perfect allowing reasonable wide angle shots and enough telephoto for most of my purposes. Of course my primes from Olympus are sharper and faster but that is to be expected. Still find myself using this lens when I want to travel with minimal kit.The images below were taken using an EPL-7 with the lens. All the indoor shots were taken at 600-800 ASA with the night shot at 8000ASA.Outdoor were taken with ASA 100-200. Images look much better in person 🙂

Excellent image quality and even better QPR!

My expectations were not that high when I got this as a kit lens for my OMD E-M5 Mk1 that I recently bought. But, I have to say I’m really surprised on how good this is. The sharpness is quite decent from edge to edge. Also, color and contrast are really good (specially if you shoot using the i-Enhance mode). Focus is snappy and spot on. This is a bargain at this price point. As a kit lens, this is much nicer than the SELP1650 that came with my NEX-6 and a6000. I’m selling my Oly 12-40 Pro 2.8 as I didn’t see much difference to this lens….even though my 12-40 was heavily decentered.

I love this small Zooom lens. This I sattached all teh time with my Olympus E-P3 camera. I realized the images are much cleare then Sigma 19mm lens.Lightweight and look cheap material.

    decent, quick to focus, tough.

This gave predictable and quick shots (focuses fast) all throughout a long vacation in good to great lighting. They are however not what you’d call ‘fast’ at 3.5 max aperture and fail utterly at any indoor lighting, as you end up with shutter speeds well under the 1/60 you need without a tripod. But given the price I cannot complain, especially as when on the camera, this lens took a major fall onto pavement, landing right on the lens cap, and that did not seem to phase this lens at all.

    Takes great photos!

Used this lens with my old Olympus Pen EPL-2 many years ago and looking back at my trip photos I realize that maybe I shouldn’t have gotten rid of this little lens. Very sharp details but definitely had great lighting.

    14-42 vs 12-40 pro

I’ve had mine since it came with a refurbished epm1, so I guess this is a five year review.Interestingly enough, I have several other lenses to compare this to. The Panasonic 14mm, the zuiko 25 and 45, and finally the 12-40 pro. Given the same aperture, this lens is about as sharp in the center as those lenses. Edges are also very sharp if you set the focus point to the edge. This is a $100 lens that performs as good as the 12-40 pro in good conditions; what your extra money gets you is a lens that gives you pictures in poor conditions. And the pro makes you pay for that with a weight four times greater and a form factor that is considerably bulkier. The nice thing is you have choices. You can use a prime for low level light, a pro zoom for miserably conditions, and this guy for everything else. Hence, surprisingly, this is my most used lens even now.Highly recommended, especially if you have the newer 16-20 meg cameras.

It’s a good lens not a magic wand

This lens is somewhat difficult to review, because for the price it’s great! It definitely out performs it’s price point. Seriously for $100.00 it’s an outstanding lens, but as you add more lenses it will probably send more and more time at the bottom of your camera bag. I also like to take my bike out for a spin on the weekends. I’ll put this lens on my E-PL5 and it fits nicely in my small Lowepro camera bag; actually, I have room for an extra battery as well. In sunlight this lens produces decent quality photos, with good saturation, and contrast. Focusing is fast and the zoom range from 14mm to 42mm is a very serviceable. In lower light situations this lens will frustrate you, and maybe even cost you some great shots. I used this lens at a family gathering and captured some amazing shots, but I lost about 20% due to slow focusing or botched focusing, and because of that mishap I went and bought the Panasonic Lumix 20mm and Olympus M.Zuiko 45mm. My 14-42mm is getting a little hard to find at the bottom of my camera bag these days, but still weekend bike rides it’s a trusted companion.

    Excellent len under $145

I like it a lot as a lens kit comes with the camera however I won’t pay more than $150 for this lens. I paid $99 for it with the purchasing of the OM-D E-M5. I think it’s a reasonable price. I used this type lens before with a Pen PL2 but with the OM-D E-M5, it produce a better photos. You can take a look of the first bath of photos I took with my brand new OM-D E-M5.

    Missing Parts

I needed to replace the original kit lens I got with my Olympus Pen E-P3 with this one — I accidentally dropped the lens and it no longer works past 27mm.Amazon’s selling it for a great price & despite my father telling me to never buy lens from Amazon based on advise from photography forums, I went on ahead.Interestingly, the 14-42mm lens I bought last week arrived with a missing silver ring. So I returned it & paid $5.75 for postage to ship it back. Amazon states “since it’s their error, they will reimburse up to $5.05” after the return is delivered. I’m out $0.70 for their error.I immediately reordered another on Amazon. Just got it now… Again, the lens is missing the silver outer ring. Either, Olympus is messing up with their packaging, or it got stolen by a previous customer who ordered the same lens & returned it.Either way, it’s upsetting & annoying enough for me to spend time writing this. I should really be showering after my gym work-out & cooking dinner. *sigh*Amazon really needs to check their items before shipping them. This is time-consuming. Not only do I need to drive to the post office, pay extra for postage I won’t be credited back, now I need to wait for Amazon to but the refunds back into my credit card. All the while, not getting the intended item. And to top it off, this is not an isolated incident.I hope you all have better luck.

An R or not an R?

There are two versions of this lens. The latest has an “R” suffix. The differences from the non-R version seems to be:1) Cosmetic – Mainly, it adds a cover over the lens hood bayonet mount; and2) Functional – It has a later firmware version (which I’ve read allows it to focus faster with the newer Pen cameras). Optically, the two versions are reported to be identical.Since the non-R version can usually be found for a lower price, I bought that one and just updated the firmware (using the free software that can be downloaded from the Olympus site). It focuses very quickly on my E-PM1.

    Good overall starter lens.

Lens is a good overall walk-around lens. The lens is sharp; although, it is not as fast as I would want. The construction is mostly plastic which means it is very light. Not sure how durable it will be. Works well with the OM-D systems.

    Broken after taking a flight

I bought it one month ago. I tested it with a few shots. It worked fine. I then put on my backpack for a long flight to a foreign country. When I used the lens again in the foreign country, I just saw a black screen on my camera body and the lens did not work at all. I could not believe it because I carefully handled the lens along the travel, and It worked before. I later figured out that some components inside the lens was not tightly screwed, so after some turbulences on the flight, the lens failed to work. Unfortunately I could not returned it cause I was away from the USA. I should buy a new one instead of this kind of used lens. You don’t know if it has some inherent problems or not.

    Appears USED and is DEFECTIVE

This lens arrived thrown into a shipping box with no Olympus box, no warranty, no instructions. I kept it several days as it was actually a gift to me from my husband. We ordered the lens attachments that are made to attach to this lens. (Olympus has come out with a wide angle and a fish eye lens attachment for this lens.) That’s when we found out the lens is defective. The attachment lenses just fall right off of it. As does the metal ring which came on it. I am waiting to see if this company will accept a return/refund. They do not post their return policy and there were no automatic return responses. Based on the shoddy shipping and lack of original box or any paperwork I would not recommend this company .

    Not for movie making…

An attique lens that will get the job done. It doesn’t have an optical image stabilizer. I use my GH4 for movies and stabilization is key. Other than that: beautiful build quality and a picture that is just fine.

it worked well, and honestly was perfect for my uses, but an internal wire, or potentiometer, (could be either) was broken, and now the lens, though it should be working fine mechanically cannot properly communicate with the camera, and as an electronic only focus lens, it becomes a fancy paperweight. if only it was actually heavy enough for that.

Lense is much faster, it is slightly softer optics wise comapred to 1st gen but so much easier to work with. Would buy from this seller again!

Great lens that might require some breaking in (if you’re in video)

Full disclosure, I’m not a professional. I love my camera, I love shooting video, and I am really enjoying this lens, but consider a grain of salt if you’re a working professional shooting every day and looking for a review to stake part of your livelihood on. That said, I’ll speak from the heart/wallet.This lens was a replacement for me of a much cheaper lens of similar specs, albeit at a shorter maximum focal length. But even more than the long zoom, the first thing that struck me right out of the box is that this lens feels solid and built to last.I haven’t done a definitive test of focal qualities, but in casual use I’ve found that the focus is consistent from the widest to tightest focal length. That is, I haven’t had to refocus going from a wide shot to tight, which I understand to be the case in higher-quality lenses. I have not observed any softness at maximum zoom, personally. So my one critique of this lens – and I’m reluctant to even call it a critique, as it feels like a reasonable break-in step to me – is that the action on the zoom was a little sticky at first. Turning the zoom ring by hand, it required significantly higher effort around the mid-zoom mark – just enough that doing a smooth zoom, as one might want in certain film genres, wasn’t possible. BY NO MEANS was it so difficult I felt I’d endanger the lens; definitely not a manufacture issue, nothing jammed or anything like that. My focus motor also had trouble with it, for what it’s worth; I use a Ronin S2 gimbal and its accessory focus motor when I’m shooting video, and here I repurposed the focus motor for zoom, attempting some genre-specific camera work. The motor calibration got hung up on the sticky spot, and once I overcame that, the actual zoom motion was still sticky and inhibited.I looked into this and several professionals’ websites recommended both “breaking it in” and lubricating it properly (which requires not only lens-specific lube, but the right lube for the particular lens manufacturer, and frankly, I’m cheap) so I started with breaking it in. Just kept the lens on my desk for a couple days, and during free moments I’d twist the zoom ring back and forth through its extents, for a few minutes at a time. I probably spent less than 30 minutes total on this before the action became considerably smoother – a truly minor investment for smooth-zooming action. Having done this, I’m confident I can snap-zoom by hand and slow-zoom with the focus motor when I want to.In short, I’m happy with this lens. It’ll fit a different role in your kit, I’m sure, but it’s my first zoom and the versatility of it, after using nothing but primes, is fantastic.

    Very sharp lens

Brought this lens by mistake, was looking for the original kit lens. Started making gifts of my micro four third cameras after I found out that the good lens were out was too costly. I used mostly legacy lens with adaptors. The one EPL1 I kept was for an underwater housing for my daughter. I eventually found out that I had to buy another EPL1 to get the original lens.See some examples above

    A Very Nice Lens

I read reviews on DPReview and other sites first, so I knew what I would be buying. When I first attached it to my E-P1 body, the only thing that puzzled me a little was the message “Please check the status of a lens”. One is expected to turn the zoom ring to make it useable, and the message is not very clear–more a problem of the body.I like the look of the lens. For the second generation of M.Zuiko 14-42mm lens, there are two versions. I chose the R version, because I thought it looks better. The other non-R version is $15 cheaper, but it looks ugly to me. The silver colour I chose matches the E-P1 body perfectly. It is a cheap and light lens, but the image quality is very good. As a Movie-Still-Compatible (MSC) lens, it focuses fast and silently, and is very suitable for taking videos. Just keep in mind that in silent environments the focusing sound can still be recorded, if you use the microphone on the camera body–again, it is not really an issue for this lens.Of course, with f/5.6 on the telephoto end, it is really not for low-light photography. Still, it serves the purpose very well as a lightweight travel companion with my E-P1. My Canon body and four lenses are obviously better in many aspects, but I probably do not want to bring them on a business travel.

    Good Lens

I am happy with the lens, it has a good range for everyday shooting. I like the fact that it collapses to such a small size, but it takes some getting used to to unlock and lock it for use and to close it up. I’m not ecstatic that the body is plastic, I do worry that it is a bit fragile so we handle with care. But it is a good price for the product and I am pleased with its performance.

More than good enough to me.

Not perfect but more than good enough to me. If allowed by light, stopping down 1 stop from minimum and pictures amaze me on detail. Chromatic aberration or soft borders exists but fortunately both low. Construction is good enough also, mainly plastic. I would prefer metal mount but a plastic one does not bother me (I have another one with plastic mount for more than a year now: 40-150mm).

    Good Weight but Quirky

The lens is really light weight. It is not a pro lens, but it works. What I did not like about the lens is that it must be unlocked and extended to use. The extension is not about zooming it. The viewfinder of the camera will not turn on unless the lens is extended as shown in the product image. One of the benefits of a wide-angle lens is its smaller size. This allows the photographer to blend in and to draw less attention to themselves when taking photos so that others are natural and will drop their guard. The “mandatory” extension doubles the size of the lens and calls attention to its presence, which is not aesthetically pleasing. Worse, it defeats the objective of trying to remain unobtrusive. The fact of its lightness might offset this concern for some people. The choice is all about what one’s goal is.The images were shot as close as I could get to the subject. The headphones and lens images were shot at 14mm; the shot of the monitor was at 42mm. They are not great images, but show an average shot with the lens.

    It’ll work

It gets the job done. Imaging capabilities are at least on par with what you’d expect from a kit lens. The E-M10 corrects the wide-angle barrel distortion in camera (JPG), so that’s cool.My small complaints:- dumb cheap plastic ring on the front comes off too easily.- this may be petty, but the aesthetics–meh. The proportions of the thing when mounted on the camera and extended don’t exactly make you want to pick it up and play with it the way some lens/camera combinations seem to. You don’t usually see pictures of this thing in its ready-to-go position; they always show it retracted. But if you retract it every time you’re done using it, then there’s always that extra fiddly step before you’re ready to take pictures next time.Because of both of those points, I probably won’t even bother with the plastic hood I bought for this thing. If the plastic ring comes off so easily, I suspect the hood would come off even easier and be more trouble than it’s worth. Maybe I’ll get a screw-on one sometime. My only kinda big complaint:- manual focus ring is WAY too stiff/tight. Switching to manual with this thing is not a joy; it’s really hard to make minuscule adjustments when by the time you’ve applied enough force to get the ring turning, it jerks past the point you wanted to stop at, and then stops just as jerkily. On the other hand, the zoom ring is nice and smooth and just right. I guess I’ll save my manual-focusing fun for my cheapo vintage 50mm lens with adapter.

Didn’t last long at all before malfunctioning

Lens was good up until the time I could no longer return it. Now when you try to extend the lens any further than 25mm you get a message saying “Please check the status of your lens. So at this point I can use it as long as I stay at 25mm or less. This is undoubtedly a manufacturing flaw and not the fault of the seller. It’s just too bad it didn’t last any longer than four months. You’d think it would have a warranty on it good for a year or more.10/24/20 Update: It no longer works at all.
