<style type=”text/css”> .aplus-tech-spec-hide-loading { visibility: visible !important; } </style> A new solution for mirrorless camera users. Combining F1.4 brightness in a compact body Introducing a high-performance, large-diameter wide-angle lens

16mm F1.4 DC DN EOS M MFT SonyCaptured with the SIGMA 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary lens in EF-M mount by Filly Bonito-Brook

The new SIGMA 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary is the world’s first interchangeable lens for mirrorless Sony E-mount and Canon EOS M* cameras in the APS-C format to offer a 24mm focal length (35mm equivalent) and F1.4 brightness. The lens for Micro Four Thirds offers a 32mm focal length (35mm equivalent) with the same f-number of 1.4. This is the large-diameter wide-angle lens for which mirrorless camera users have been waiting.

Developed to feature a lightweight, compact package for everyday use, SIGMA DN lenses for mirrorless cameras deliver superior performance covering the key focal lengths. The new lens builds on the success of the 30mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary, which SIGMA released in 2016 as the first in a new series of prime lenses for mirrorless cameras. The 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary also combines F1.4 brightness with top-level optical performance.

Diffraction MTF

There are two types of MTF chart. One considers the diffraction quality of light, which is called “Diffraction MTF”, and the other, “Geometrical MTF” does not.

The quality of light appears in the diffracted light, and becomes more distinct as the F value gets bigger, resulting in lower image quality. Also, diffracted light exists at every aperture, which is why SIGMA has been releasing Diffraction MTF data from the beginning since it is very close to the actual image data.

The readings at 10 lines per millimeter measure the lens’s contrast ability (red lines), repeating fine parallel lines spaced at 30 lines per millimeter measure the lens’s sharpness ability (green lines), when the aperture is wide open.

Geometrical MTF

The advantage of using “Geometric MTF” data is that it is easy to measure and calculate since it does not consider the diffraction quality of light, yet it tends to show higher values in the graph than actual images.

The readings at 10 lines per millimeter measure the lens’s contrast ability (red lines), repeating fine parallel lines spaced at 30 lines per millimeter measure the lens’s sharpness ability (green lines), when the aperture is wide open.

With many applications in aerospace and other industries, glass ceramic is an extremely tough type of crystallized glass that serves as the foundation for Clear Glass Ceramic. While featuring the high transmittance required of optical devices, this advanced new material combines greater hardness than chemically strengthened glass and greater flexibility than sapphire crystal glass. These qualities make Clear Glass Ceramic the ideal material for protective lens filters.

Designed to minimize flare and ghosting with a rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur.

The 9-blade rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur in the out-of-focus areas of the image.

From an early stage in the lens design process, flare and ghosting have been measured to establish an optical design resistant to strong incident light sources such as backlighting. SIGMA’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting to help photographers produce sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions. The included lens hood can be attached to block out extraneous light, which can have a negative effect on rendering performance.

Superb quality for price. Great Nighttime photography too.

This is a very good lens no doubt. More so for the price. I’m a photography enthusiast and all those pictures were taken with this lens on the Sony ZVE-10 within less than a month of my getting into photography. One big thing about this lens is that is unexpectedly very good in low light. Clearly, its very low aperture of f1.8 makes it collect much light and consequently have better nighttime performance but still, the images that this lens outputs at night are simply shockingly stunning. The only major challenge you can have with this at night is the dynamic range of your camera.I’m very big on bokeh and this lens does perform – albeit not well enough for me. The bokeh is quite decent if the object in focus is close enough (although for portraits, your subject can feel invaded because of the proximity that will be required to get the best bokeh). From my use, I found that it has very unnoticeable to no chromatic aberration in almost all situations & it has a fair bit of distortion but it’s nothing that can’t be easily fixed in post-production if you are shooting raw.The fact that it is a wide-angle lens means it’s able to capture a lot at once as you can see in some of those nighttime pictures in a performance. That said, this is a very capable and fairly flexible lens. It can handle both wide-angle shots & night-time photography well with good results (although not the best) when taking portraits.Because I’m big on portraits and would be primarily using it with my camera to record a human subject, I decided to return this go for its other sibling – the Sigma 30mm. I can expect better bokeh and portrait shots from that with similar night performance although poorer chromatic aberration overall. Nonetheless, even with the shortcomings of this lens, it is still a very good one and most definitely a great value for its price.

    Stunning Quality

The Sigma 16mm lens is an outstanding piece of equipment that I have been using for the past three years, and I can confidently say that it’s one of the best lenses I have ever owned. It’s a prime lens that offers a wide-angle view that’s perfect for capturing stunning landscapes, architecture, and cityscapes. One of the things I love most about this lens is its exceptional optical quality. The images captured are sharp, with excellent contrast and vivid colors. The lens produces sharp images, even in low-light conditions, which is a testament to its impressive f/1.4 aperture. The build quality of the lens is also top-notch. It feels very sturdy in hand, and it’s clear that it’s built to last. The lens mount is made of metal, which gives me confidence that it won’t wear out easily. The lens is also lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry around and travel with. Its autofocus is also accurate and quick, which makes it a reliable choice for capturing fast-moving subjects.Overall, I can confidently say that the Sigma 16mm lens is a must-have for any photographer who loves capturing wide-angle shots. It’s a high-quality lens that produces exceptional images, and its build quality is excellent. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for a reliable wide-angle lens. It’s a five-star product that has never let me down.

    Incredible, beautiful photos

First of all, I never write reviews for anything. But I got this lens and was like: everybody needs to know how good this is.My primary purpose for it is mostly going to be real estate photography. It’s a beautifully wide angle without a ton of distortion – compared to my old 18mm, this one actually seemingly has less. I had a 14mm that was just a little too wide and a 20 that was not wide enough. Definitely think this one is the middle ground I’ve been envisioning.I will say it is the heaviest lens I own, but that doesn’t bother me at all since I use a tripod for most of my work. I actually like how durable it feels. The bokeh is delicate and soft and it’s very cool that it gets all the way up to 1.4 vs 1.8. But the biggest seller for me on this is how SHARP it is. Unbelievably crisp. I’m so happy I invested in it. Sigma did some incredible work again. If you’re on the fence, get the lens.

    Stunning value

This is a fantastic prime lens and generally considered the best value everyday prime for Sony a6000-series cameras.I had originally bought the 30mm version of this lens and got a bad copy, so it was years before I succumbed to the fabulous reviews and got this for my a6300. It’s outstanding. With the kit lens, I found myself taking a LOT of shots indoors at 16mm, so getting a fast 16mm prime (24mm equiv) made a lot of sense. Just set your minimum shutter to 100s and don’t worry about its lack of OSS if you don’t have IBS.Focusing is fast, it feels good in the hand, the bokeh is lovely, and of course its extremely sharp. If you are like me and bought a 50mm as your first APS-C prime out of habit (and value), and realized it’s 75mm equiv is too long for everyday shooting, this lens is for you. With this focal length, closeups are distorted as wide-angle, but take a couple steps back and environmental portraits make for normal heads. I spent so much time trying to get two people into the frame with my 50mm its relaxing to have so much more view to work with.I do shoot at 1.4 alot, but keep in mind this is a very narrow DOF so you will want to use eye auto-focus for portraits. Shooting multiple faces, I will open it up to 1.7-2.8 as needed to keep everyone reasonably in focus. On my a7-II , this is a 24MP 16mm lens with a vignette (have to remove the hood to minimize this), or 10MP 24mm in APS-C mode (which are largely indistinguishable from the a6300 24MP shots). All in all, this lens lives up to its reputation as an unbeatable value everyday performance prime.

    Fantastic 16mm Prime for a6500

This was my third lens after the Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens and the Sony 35mm f/1.8. Wow, what an upgrade. This is a solid and incredibly flexible lens. It’s pretty bulky compared to the a6500, but it still handles pretty well and isn’t too heavy. My only real complaint is that the focus ring which, while buttery smooth and responsive, is almost too large. It takes up way too much space on the lens barrel and is very easily bumped. I have to hold the camera a little differently than I’m used to when I’m wearing this lens so I’m not constantly messing up my focus. Maybe this is just a me problem, but it’s worth keeping in mind.I stick to manual focus for the most part, but I can confirm that AF works on this lens, and it works well. Very fast, and very accurate. I can’t tell a difference between it and my Sony lenses. It’s not stabilized, obviously, but between the wide angle and the 6500’a IBIS, camera shake is not something you need to worry about with this combo.I did a lot of research before buying this and it’s my opinion that there is no better wide angle lens for emount. Sony’s offerings are cheaper, but you get what you pay for. There are pricier options, but they’re not worth the extra cost. This lens is a perfect balance and I don’t see myself ever outgrowing it.2020-11-30 EDIT: Wow I love this lens so much. This and my Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 are the only lenses I use anymore. If I even suspect that I’ll be shooting in less-than-ideal lighting conditions, I reach for the Sigma 16. Between the wide-angle and the huge aperture, this thing handles so well in low light it blows my mind. I do a lot of urban exploration and I’m always taking this lens in dark dusty places and so it has plenty of scuffs and scratches by this point (I put a big scratch on the front lens element this summer, sad, but you can’t even tell unless I stop down to f/11) but it still works perfectly. I love that it’s a weather-sealed lens, because I inevitably end up getting it covered in dust and sprayed with water, but it’s such a trooper I’ve never had a problem. Brought it into some deep dank caves this weekend, and it was right at home.

This lens is the standard for content creators!

Probably the most popular lens for crop sensor cameras. I own two of these lenses, one for my Sony ZV-E10, and the other for my Lumix Gh5 Mkii. Super sharp images with warm tones and blurry background at f1.4. Still today, after a few years, it remains the most popular lens if you are making videos or taking still photos.

I Am Now Open to Investing in Sigma Optics

The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E Mount is the best apsc lens I have ever mounted on my A6500–even better than my Sony Zeiss 24mm f/1.8, which cost over twice as much money. The Sigma lens is sharper than the Sony Zeiss 24mm f/1.8, and possesses the same macro capability of the Sony Zeiss 24mm f/1.8. However, the 24mm is completely silent, and has a more compact form factor. The Sony is a 35mm equivalent on a full frame, while the Sigma 16mm is 24mm on a full frame. For street photography and landscapes, I would definitely go with the Sigma. If you’re looking for a focal length you can use for portraits, street, and landscapes, you may consider the Sony Zeiss 24mm f/1.8. But if I could do it all over again, I would go with the Sigma 16mm instead of the Sony 24mm. It is a better lens. This lens resolves on par at 24mm with the Sony full frame 16-35 GM I own, which cost me $2000; and it is able to let in more light, while doing so.This lens is SHARP ACROSS the FRAME.I don’t own the Batis 25 f/2, but was thinking about buying it for video work. Not anymore, with my purchase of this lens.I own the Sony 10-18, and will continue to use that for video on a V2 Crane gimbal for ultra-wide angles. But will definitely use this lens for all other video work on that gimbal, if I don’t need the ultra-wide angle. The Sigma 16mm is not completely silent, but almost. I would say the sound is negligible. The build quality of the lens is excellent. The focus ring is buttery smooth. It mounts beautifully on my A6500, and will stay there most of the time.I gave the lens 4 stars for two reasons: There seems to be an issue with dust in the front lens element. I returned one copy due to this issue but was undeterred in my commitment to owning the lens. The second factor in deducting a point is the negligible sound of the focus system. Were it not for the dust and the negligible sound of the focus system, this lens would truly be superb.Moving forward, I will look seriously at Sigma optics alongside Zeiss and Sony.Be sure to buys from an approved Sigma vendor: https://www.sigmaphoto.com/where-to-buy-sigmaI highly recommend the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN for Sony

    Incredibly Sharp, easy to Focus

I use this product for Vlogging, taking landscape photos and for super wide field astrophotography. Finding focus is a breeze and this lens is perfect for a VLOG at close distance. Especially if you want to create a BOKA effect. This lens is obviously super fast for gathering light of the night sky, but can be adjusted if it is too fast. Manual focusing is a breeze, I just wish there was a way to lock the focus in.

    Overrated For No Reason

Seeing alot of 5 star reviews, and ok pics, I thought this would be a good buy for My Sony E mount camera. Truth is this is not worth $423 after tax. 200 mabey. But definitely not double that. The image is not that great until you edit it. See the before and after pic. I’m a professional photographer, and the base image is pretty bad. There is ALOT OF GRAIN at f1.4, with a very muddy look. It also has terrible bokeh for a prime lens. It acts more like an f2.8 lens, you see plenty of detail in the background, where you should have an ultra blurry background. Fine for a beginner but not a pro.Other lenses like the canon EF F1.8 50mm, completely blur tbe background, and cost $100 and can be adapted to Sony E mount! I use Fotodoix adapters, and honestly My results are significantly better. This lens truly doesn’t feel like an F1.4, until you are taking night photos. Only then you can get tons of details, that is f1.4 quality. Loads of light comes in, which is great for night shooters. It even shoots great night video, but does tend to overexpose a bit, without extra accessories. For everyone else, go for better glass. This is going to overexpose images of a few occasions, cause extra grain, offer no stabilization, and produce awful bokeh..all for a brisk 400+ dollars. This is a solid night photography lens, but that’s it. Unless you like editing out plenty of imperfections.Btw, this also isn’t great for youtube videos. The manual focus ring is too big. You can’t hold this lens and stay in focus 100% of the time. This lens messed up plenty of My shots, because a focus locking feature wasn’t added. It’s an average starter f1.4, and not Sony G glass or Zeiss material. So if you’re looking for that just buy the better glass.Goodluck and don’t fall for the glowing reviews like I did. Most people reviewing are clearly new to photography.Note: Top pic edited, bottom pick not.

Must own for APS-C camera users.

I needed a sharp image quality lens for my Sony A6400 camera. I watched many YOUTUBE videos before I made my decision to buy this lens for a photo shoot with a model who contacted me. I also purchased a polorized ND filter to cut down the suns glare and protect the lens while traveling. This Sigma 16mm 1.4 prime lens works best with stability or a very steady hand. I had a 85% hit rate with clarity. You might want to shoot in burst mode when working with a client, so you won’t miss a sharp image quality shot. That’s if you don’t have a camera with (IBIS), tripod or a gimbal.Yet, overall this is a must buy for your kit. Especially, if you’re ever in a tight situation. Such as an elevator. -@ec8visuals (instagram)

The lens itself was great. But I found it skeptical when I received my lens in a beat up box from returns department without a warrently sticker. The lens seems in fine shape itself but I wished I would have received my warrenty sticker and I wished I would have actually received a brand-new un-opened one as I selected for purchase..

Capturing photos with this vs a kit lens is vastly different, it is capable of such dynamic and crisp photos, my longer low light exposures are more vibrant and it really does most of the work for me. The value you get out of the price of this lens is amazing. Highly recommend it.

.. a quality lens in this category. It is very well build, feels solid, great grip with a rubberized ring. It is large, but it feels right in my hand with a Sony a 6300. Most important for me: it is extremely sharp, from center to corners. My copy does not show chromatic aberrations on the pictures I took so far, still have to test at high contrast dark/bright motives. Colors and contrast is very nice, not too pale and not too intense. Similar to the neutral Rokinon contrast/colors of their 12mm f2.0. The Sigma has autofocus and it is fast. I did some night shots in the streets and even at f1.4 it is ridiculously sharp. After my frustrations with the Sony 10-18mm f4 which was very soft, the Rokinon 21mm f1.4 with an imprecise focus ring (infinity mark) I am really satisfied with this lens. Imo Sigma filled this gap with a high quality, sharp, autofocus, fast wide angle lens. I still have to test it for videos, what I can see and read in youtube it performs very well though. The pictures I took with this Sigma 16mm f1.4 are very satisfactory, comparable to the shots I make with my preferred Sony 28 mm f2.Update:I tested it over the weekend and I am impressed. The small photos here might not tell, but the actual size pics show that lens is very sharp at low light even when wide open, and there are close to no chromatic aberrations at high contrast. A wonderful lens I can highly recommend!

First lens I got was completely dead!

I was excited to try this lens because of al the positive reviews, and it seems like such a good deal for an f1.4 autofocus prime at 16mm. The first lens I got was completely dead! It would not focus at all! I tried it on another Sony camera body. Manual or autofocus did not work. I’m a professional and have owned over 20 lenses since I had started photography and videography, and this was the first time I ever encountered a dead lens. I got worried after I turned off the camera and inserted my other lens because it made a really strange noise in my other lens when I turned on my camera. That lens had silent autofocus, so it shouldn’t make any noise! I was afraid the defective lens damaged the electronics of my a6400. After running some tests it seemed ok.Thank god for Amazon’s excellent return policy. I got a replacement 2 days later, and it works fantastic! It’s on par with all the fantastic reviews I read. Autofocus works very well on the a6400. I bought this for video and at f1.4 it is sharp enough for video. It is a very cinematic lens with shallow depth of field, and at a 24mm equivalent full frame focal length, It’s the perfect gimbal prime lens for the a6400. I give 1 star for the defective first lens and 5 stars for the replacement. I just worry about the longevity of this lens. Make sure you buy it from an authorized Sigma reseller. Not all sellers on Amazon are.

Excellent – Lives Up To The Hype

Let me list the reasons this is such a great and popular lens – arguably the best you can get for a Sony a6000, a6300, or a6500.First, the images are (or can be) crystal clear. This is quality optics assisted by a creamy-smooth focus ring.Second, it can perform several different functions. Yes, as a 16mm prime it’s perfect for vast, sweeping landscapes. However, the minimum focal distance is so short – literally within a couple of inches of the lens – you can easily use this to capture lovely close-up artsy images with nice bokeh. With the aperture set wide open at f1.4, you can also get good results for low-light shooting like night skies and that sort of thing.Third, the manufacture quality first-rate. It’s a nice, solid piece of engineering, but not too heavy. The auto focus is also excellent. Not all third-party lenses can say that.I’ve had a lot of fun just learning how to use it to its potential.

Sony camera as the base + Sigma lens for the win

Sigma lenses rock. I’ve got the Sigma 30mm F1.4 and the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and use them interchangeably on my Sony a5100 (a surprisingly little powerful camera package). The heft and build quality of Sigma lenses is impressive, but their optics are even more impressive. A little slower to focus with auto-focus than Sony OEM lenses, they still focus fast-enough for continuous video use.You cannot go wrong with this lens if you’re looking for an around-town wide-angle lens that can also be used for low-light conditions. Personally, I use this lens to chase around my son (who’s a toddler). The larger maximum aperture allows me to use a faster shutter speed because he’s a quick little one and I don’t want blur. Also, the wide angle allows me to get a great shot even if he moves towards the ends of the frame before I can get the shot. He’s quick. Hahaha!

Absolute great value lens. Great picture quality.

Love the wide aperture for low light. Auto focus is super on my Sony a6600. Nice wide angle so you can get most of the room in every shot. It’s everything other reviews say it is. It’s not an art lens but it does a great job. I got auto focus from 6″ away, so that’s a great feature as well. The only downside, no image stabilization. Just use a tripod or a fast shutter speed, no worries. But i knew that when i bought it so the product lives up to it’s claims very well. I’m super happy with my lens.

    Just so it, it’s amazing.

I have been looking at what to do for lenses for ASPC Sony E for a while.. wanted to get 16-55 or something but 2k for a GM? Nope. So the sigma 30 and 16mm both are amazing. I just shoot all videos of my How Tos with the 16mm and any seated video with the 30mm. Tons of bokeh, great picture quality..A lot of noise from the AF constantly moving on the sony, but nothing in the audio. Just annoying to me when filming.Love these lenses. Solid too. The pankcake of the a6400 wouldn’t allow me to put on the stabalizer without counter weight. These lenses are smaller than big zoom but very solid. I could do pretty much anything needed with these 2.

I am sad that I waited so long to pull the trigger

I shoot a Sony a6000. I love this lens. I am sad that I waited so long to pull the trigger, but will move forward with my photography elevated. I know this isn’t quite glass that is thousands of dollars, but if you are a hobbyist, this is an amazing value and upgrade from the kit lens. My only complaint would be the lack of image stabilization on the a6000 when I’m shooting handheld, but if I shoot loose I can fix a bit of this in post. And it is important to note that I knew this before buying the lens, so it wasn’t a disappointment. This is the lens that is now on my camera the majority of the time.

This is my favorite lens I’ve ever owned!

This lens is ideal for low light shots; especially at night. Easy to mount on my Sony a6400, and it does not make you look heavier than you really are. I’ve shot a lot of video with this, for others, and they all look amazing! The Bokeh effect from the blurred out background is also beautiful. This is a high quality, fast focus lens.

Absolutely amazing for the price range

This is easily one of my favorite lenses to use for event videos. I used to have the terrible and cheap 16mm Sony lens and that turned me away from wide lenses for a while. This lens on my a6300 leaves that lens in the dust. The autofocus is fairly quick although it’s not something I rely on too much for video. I am able to use this on a gimbal but I have a fairly simple set up.Overall would definitely recommend as a fun lens to use if you want to take it on a day out. Doesn’t add too much weight or size that it would be a bother. Especially for the quality you’d be getting for the price and size, this is a must get wide angle.

My first prime lens for my Sony A6000!

Really happy about the image quality from this lens compared to my Sony Kit lenses (16-50mm & 55-210mm). Picked this as my first prime lens for my a6000 because it’s useful in many situations – great bokeh in wide-angle portraits, group photos, low-light conditions, landscape & even blogging. The image quality is great straight out of the camera, but taken to the next level with post editing with Adobe Lightroom where it lets you enable lens corrections & remove chromatic aberrations. The only downsides I see are how big the lens is compared to the 16-50mm kit lens and a little noise when autofocusing (that may be heard while taking video if using internal microphone). But other than that, it’s a no-brainer lens to own for any Sony APS-C (crop sensor) camera.

Excellent FF Lens; 1mm short for RE Photography

I purchased this lens specifically for Real Estate Photography (REP).Excellent color depth, sharp, and focuses quickly. The size and shape is ideal for most operations and doesn’t weigh much. What is a “Contemporary” Lens anyway?? If I was wealthy, I would keep this lens; Ultimately, I had to return the lens because it’s at least 1mm short of being able to properly capture interior rooms to purchase a different lens.*Images attached to this review are HDR composites shot with the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens (402965) on a Sony a7.

I’ve been using this for over half a year.

This lens is great, it pretty much lives on my camera. I have a Sony a7ii that I use this with, which has an aps-c mode that allows me to use this on a full-frame camera, as this is for a crop sensor. I believe the conversion equals to slightly over 24mm at f/2.+. It does work amazingly for my photo shoots where I need to get wide angle shots and is great for Vlogging. The price, you cannot beat. If you’re in the market for a wide angle lens, I do recommend. I’ve had this now for nearly half a year plus I believe. Great product.

This Lens is Amazing (Amazon Shipping? Not So Much)

I love this lens. It’s incredibly sharp and produces gorgeous images. I was looking for a single lens to use with my new A6500, and you really can’t go wrong with this one. It’s fantastic for landscape and street photography, and it forces you to be creative with portraits. It could be a little smaller, but fast lenses need lots of glass to get that light. My only real complaint is that I ordered from Amazon directly, and they shipped it in a big padded shipping envelope (!!!!!). I had to do a lot of verifying to make sure the lens was unaffected by that, but lenses should be shipped in riged boxes with lots of cushioning. So I suggest you order from a third-party on Amazon; maybe get one of those bundle deals where they’ll toss in a lot of extra stuff. At least they’ll package it properly.

Arguably the best lens for APS-C cameras.

I love this lens. It’s sharp, provides great subject isolation & renders out of focus areas beautifully (amazing bokeh). It’s a great focal length for APS-C cameras (24mm full frame equivalent), which makes it quite versatile. I use it a lot for event coverage, food photography & gimbal work. It has an impressive minimum focusing distance, decent autofocus & great lowlight performance due to its fast aperture. For what it does, it’s quite reasonably priced. My only wish is that it had image stabilization…though I’m certain that would probably double if not triple its price. It’s also quite a chunky & heavy lens…it’s a small price to pay though. It’s a fantastic lens. I’m glad I bought it.

Bought this lens along with a 30mm Sigma lens, have to say the 30mm has been in my bag unused yet as am loving this lens. I mostly do Landscape photos and night photos and have had no issues with it. I do plan on getting the whole Sigma Trio in future. If you are looking for landscape, street photography and night photography I would definitely recommend it. I haven’t done any portraits so I can not say in that field, but I am sure it will perform just as good as this lens is very sharp.

    Perfect for Indoor Shooting

I’m still new to Photography Equipment but here’s my review: This new Sigma 16mm f1.4 is perfect for Indoor Shooting, since we are all familiar with taking a picture using a smartphone this has the same focal length so you won’t feel that you need to step back framing your subject compared to a 30mm Sigma which I also have (45mm equivalent to Full Frame).. Only downside for me is since it is longer it cast a shadow when using the built-in flash but good thing on my Sony a6000, you can tilt and bounce the flash on the ceiling.. Like I said im not a Pro so I use my built in flash.. I mainly shoot my kids indoors in the house/mall/amusement parks and outdoor like in the playground..

📷 Beginner Advice: Consider the CROP SENSOR

This is my 2nd time using a Sigma lens for my Sony camera. I’ve used them in the past (on my Canon cameras) and they undoubtedly improved my images/videos sharpness, color, added beautiful bokeh, and made autofocus SO much easier. I would consider all the praise is warranted, these lenses are truly the best for an alternative brand outside of Sony’s own.For the newbies/amateur, you have to consider the crop sensor when buying any lens for your camera. I have the a6400 and this lens will actually be more like a 24mm (because of my camera’s crop) vs a 16mm. This is NO FAULT to Sigma or this lens since this would indeed be a true 16mm on a full-size sensor camera (like on the Sony A7iii). I ordered the 30mm, which was more like a 45mm, and had to buy this one (the 16mm lens) instead to get the range I was looking for. This is something that may not as understood by us newbies/amatuers so I thought I point it out in this review so you choose your lens wisely for any camera in the A6000s series :)This lens is one you can use with various Sony camera builds and I would recommend the Sigma brand as I’ve used them heavily with Canon (now Sony) cameras. No complaints here. I hope this review helps 🙂

I got a defective used one

Reviews on the internet of this lens (and there are many) are generally very good so I decided to buy it.Somebody must’ve accidentally grabbed a lens out of the “defective–do not ship, return to factory” pile or something, because the one I got was missing some of the packaging, covered in dust, and had a bunch of dirt and oil smudges on the glass. I cleaned it carefully and thought that if it worked fine, I might just keep it… but, I just could not get a clean, crisp image no matter how hard I tried. I tried with various apertures, various lightings… in most cases the focus was just slightly off… so, I am returning.Based on reviews, I can see most customers are happy. So I guess I just got unlucky and got a bad one. I do already have the other two lenses of the “sigma trio” for Sony APS-C cameras (the 30mm and the 56mm) and I am extremely pleased with them, so I am confident that when I do get my hands on a good copy of this 16mm lens, I will be happy. Hopefully this seller will remember to double check the outgoing shipments!

This is the best lens I own.

I have various lenses I have been drawn into buying only to find they were not exactly what I was looing for. I will probably use them someday when I am hanging upside down from a plane while skydiving or photographing the earth from the moon, lol. My main use for a lens is on my desktop doing gaming videos and vlogging. This lens captures me at the right size so my face is not the only thing in the picture or I do not look like I am a mile away. With this on my camera, it can sit a few feet away from me and it sees my face, shoulders and part of the way down my chest while it blurs the background with a very nice creamy bokeh effect. Exactly what I need. It has so many desktop uses for broadcast. I have other lenses but this one stays on my camera 99.9% of the time. If I go out taking pictures perhaps the other lenses would show this one up but for vlogging, this is the ticket. It has the right width and focal distance. I wish it could zoom it in and out but I have never really needed to do that. It just sits there and makes me look gorgeous! lol. It fulfills its purpose!

    Love this lens!!

Great lens for low light, indoor, street shooting, product photography, video, etc. Very, very sharp lens, and the bokeh is very nice as well. I’m looking forward to doing some astrophotography with it this summer! It doesn’t have image stabilization in the lens, but my Sony a6500 has In Body Image Stabilization, so for me it isn’t an issue. If your camera doesn’t have IBIS, you’ll probably want to use a tripod or gimbal, or make sure you have a steady hand, but the sharpness of this lens, especially at this price point, is so worth it. I took a product photo for something I was going to sell on ebay, and it showed fine details on every speck of dust (and a stray hair I hadn’t noticed) like a microscope. LOL I had to go back and do an extra-thorough job of cleaning the item before I could take photos for listing!I have the Sigma 30mm 1.4 as well, and I really love these lenses. I’ll add a couple of low light evening shots I took (handheld) on a quick run and gun photo shoot with the Sigma 16mm 1.4 (on the a6500). Very sharp and clear. Very easy to get a great cinematic look to pictures and video.

Hefty lens|Amazing photo and video| no OSS

My title pretty much sums up what I think of the lens. It’s amazing. A bit heavier than my Sony 50mm 1.8 but not crazy heavy. Image quality is top notch and the 1.4 aperture makes taking photo and video possible in lighting conditions they shouldnt be possible in. Like seriously, it’s crazy! I went from 3 lights and wanting more to one light and needing less. I shoot 100 iso 1/60 at 1.4 for my YouTube videos indoors with one Neewer adjustable light. At 1.8 with my Sony lens it was closer to 250 or 320, so that gives you an idea how much lower your iso can be even from that small of a jump. Bokeh is good even at the wide focal length. Not as much as my 50 but pretty close. I pretty much use just these two in my Videography and photography and they’re really all ive needed so far. Very sharp lens. Comparable to native Sony lenses in auto focus and video. It doesn’t have OSS but it works well enough with a gimbal or on a tripod. Don’t expect to handheld this without ibis for video but for photo it works perfectly well for the alpha 6000. I would buy this lens again no question

    Excellent in low light

I took this lens out to compare with the Sony 16-35mm Vario-Tessar F4 lens. While the zoom had a bit more flexibility with framing, the Sigma 16mm f1.4 blew the Sony out of the water in low light which was my priority. After comparing the images closely where light wasn’t an issue, I still can’t see a single advantage worth paying THAT much more for the Sony. I was hoping to have a few excellent zooms to cover most of the range between 12mm and 120mm and keep my lens count down but after trying two of those $1000+ zooms now, I think I’ll happily stick to primes.I shoot most often in abandoned buildings with lower/natural light. The Sigma is smaller, lighter, and a third of the cost. I just used it to shoot an indoor birthday party and the focus was fast, sharp, and colors were beautifully vivid. The Sigma also has the most satisfying click of the shutter!

This Sigma 16mm is an absolute BEAST.

First off, I own the a6000 and had the kit thens which i believe is 16-55mm and a f3.4 at its lowest.I wanted to update to a lens mainly for vlogging and some Instagram pics.I was torn between this and the Sony 10-18mm. I pulled the trigger on this and then ordered the 10-18mm to compare. While the 10-18mm is wider, the Sigma blows it out of the water in certain areas:1. Bokeh. The effect on pictures and videos is unremarkable.2. Sharpness. This lens is damn sharp. I mean sharp. Pictures are crisp and so is the video.3. Low light. This makes everything seem like day with the amount of light it lets in.For $450, this is an awesome upgrade from the kit lens. Totally satisfied especially after seeing it trump the Sony 10-18mm in performance. Now if sigma could make a 16-35mm…. 🤤****Two pictures with the lens and then one of what the lens looks like on the a6000****Edit: the two night photos are now taken with a6400 and sigma 16mm. Over a year later, this thing is still a BEAST! It literally can see in the dark. Unreal.

    Perfect Streamer Lens

I use this lens on a Sony a6400 for livestreaming on Twitch, Youtube, and Facebook. This lens is absolutely perfect for that application because the 16mm focal length gives you a very nice field of view, and the f1.4 aperture gives you really good low light performance and that nice blurry background. Autofocus seems fast enough so I haven’t had any issues with it yet. This lens is a hefty boi at 405 grams so take that into consideration if you’re going to have to mount it somewhere. The lack of image stabilization is fine if you’re just going to be taking pictures or mounting it in 1 place for videos like me, but I wouldn’t recommend trying to vlog with this lens because the camera shake was pretty noticeable. I unfortunately can’t speak to the quality of this lens for landscape photography, but overall I’m thrilled with the build and image quality that this gives me for my streams.

Great lens, not so great Amazon

i should have used it more to get familiar with this lens before taking wedding shots right out of the box. pictures came out a little blurry with f1.4. i had to crop out some pictures to remove unwanted frames. this is not lens fault, it’s operator error. the bigger issue was that i discovered Amazon sent me an used lens with a Sony cap. i bought a brand new lens. Be careful and check to make sure you are getting a brand new lens if it is a FBA (fulfilled by amazon) order. you may not be getting what you thought you are getting.

    Must have

This lens truly exceeded my expectations. I bought this lens to use with my Sony A7iii to try my hand at RE photography. So far, I’ve only taken pictures of my dogs and that alone convinced me to keep this lens. I have several lenses over the 1K+ price range but so far, this lens is just as great. The autofocus is extremely fast, almost faster than a few of my other high end lenses, which is why I like to test on my wild doggos. Overall, I definitely think this lens is a must-have and I can’t wait to see how it performs long term.

I also have the Sigma 30mm version and oh boy, witbht he two you can’t go wrong. I use both lenses with 2 sony a5100s. (Chefs kiss)

    Great lens

I am taking many pictures of paintings in museums and exhibits. I was using up to now a Sony 30mm prime lens. Most of the time you need a wider angle lens, either because you cannot get far enough from the painting or there are many people in front of you taking pictures with smart phones that have wide angle. I therefore bought this Sigma 16mm. First thing to be worried about is distortion Looking on the screen or the viewer of my A6000 Sony before taking the picture, big distortion is there. But once you have taken the picture, no more distortion is visible. The auto correction of the camera is indeed very effective. You have also to be very careful to minimize perspective distortion by properly locate the camera. Then with a proper software, final corrections can be done. Very clear and crispy pictures with no visible distortion are then obtained. Just great! Only problem, the lens is quite bulky and heavy, but it is worthy.

    Absolutely BEAUTIFUL 4K Video quality!

I use for my talking head videos and they are stunning. EVERYONE compliments the picture quality. Superb, 10/10.The only thing is, this lens isn’t good for moving or walking video. But still video or regular photos, its top notch near perfect!
